Help!

Hey everyone, I am new to Fear the Fin but have long been a fan of the Sharks. I was born in the San Francisco bay area in 1985 and inherited my dads love of bay area sports teams, though I now live in Oregon. Anyway like I was saying Im a fan of the Sharks but dont know much about hockey, so I am posting this in a hope that some of you faithful could help me out with rules, scoring i.e. what does +-  for a player mean? and how do they figure penalty minutes. Anyway, anyone that could help me out that would be awesome, I like hockey but just dont know much about it. Thanks!

Hey jbowl- first off, excellent picture. Your passion for coloring will serve you well as a Sharks fan. Make sure to pick up a teal crayon.

+/- is a statistic that measures goals for and against. If a player is on the ice when his team scores, he gets a +1. If he is on the ice when an opposing team scores, he gets a -1. This statistic does not measure whether or not he was involved in the play (with a goal or assist), only accounting for if he was on the ice during the play. Three examples:

  • Game One: Patrick Marleau scored a goal and was on the ice when his teammate Dan Boyle scored a goal. He registered a +2 for the night.
  • Game Two: Patrick Marleau was on the ice when the Los Angeles Kings scored two goals throughout the course of the game. He registered a -2 for the night.
  • Game Three: Patrick Marleau was on the ice when Ryane Clowe and Joe Thornton scored a goal. He was also on the ice when the Montreal Canadiens scored a goal. He registered a +1 for the night.

Keep the questions coming- I’m more than welcome to help.

One thing to add, you don’t get a +1 or -1 if the goal comes while on the power play or penalty kill.

Heh,

I’m kinda in the same boat. The best thing to do is watch as many games as you can. And you’ll figure most of it out.

penalty minutes

it’s 2 minutes for a minor penalty. if the penalty draws blood, then its a double minor, pretty much 2 back to back power plays for a total of 4 minutes. a major penalty is either for fighting, or if he committed the penalty with an attempt to hurt/injure, for example cross checking someone in the throat, or swiniging a stick at a person’s face would be 5 minuts and he would stay in the box even if the team scored 10 power play goals. and it’s a penalty shot if someone has already broken away from the defenders and he somehow gets caught by someone who trips or slashes him or whatever happens.

and this is something i don’t know. someone please answer, that means you mr. plank and diecast dude. i know they play 4 on 4 in overtime, and if there are 2 penalties on the same team it becomes a 5 on 3 because you need 3 defenders and a goalie on the ice at all times, but what would happen if there were 3 penalties against the same team at same time? for example modano, morrow and richards all get penalties 3:52 into the 1st period. would it be 6 on 3? a 5 on 3 followed by a 5 on 4?

I think it’s a 5 on 3 for longer. The last penalty won’t start counting down until the first penalty has ended. I got that from playing hockey video games and committing penalties like crazy, so it might not be true in real life. Hopefully someone else can confirm.

I’m pretty sure Marcello is right here- I’ll check the rulebook later tonight after the game and get back to you.
