Hockey Argument at GSoM

It’s really hard to argue with someone who is willing to make such an errant remark after admitting total ignorance on the subject. It’s a whacked out paradox not worth debating.

And I made a point of e-mailing all of SBN with that opinion because the entire thought behind that fanshot was beyond stupid. Like Thresher’s quotation said, I can’t be bothered to argue with people that express their ignorance but still feel validated in giving an opinion. In my mind that’s a huge problem in the media.

It’s a family show and that’s integral to the character of this community.

In the end, I find it extremely irresponsible for a prominent SBnation manager to openly denounce an entire League and its fanbase – especially one that’s in the process of growing its presence within the community. I also considered contacting the admins to air a few grievances, though I’m sure Blez and company are already well aware of the situation

I get that GSoM is very family-oriented, but trying to “PC-ify” everything that may seem to have racist overtones and arguing against it is the wrong way to go. The point of basketball is to put the ball in the hoop with a minimum of body contact, and anything greater than a body bump will receive a flagrant foul/technical. The point of hockey is to put the puck in the net, where checking is allowed, and fighting (to a point) as an effect of that rule. The allowance and disallowance of fighting in each sport isn’t an unfair double standard; they are the consequences of the respective rules of the NBA and NHL, which were not made with “black vs white” or racial intentions in mind.

We (as in society) go “OMG, WTH?” when we see basketball fights because pushing and shoving, let alone fighting, is not part of the game. We don’t necessarily have the same reaction when we see hockey fights because that is the consequence of checking, which is part of the game. Associating this with the demographics of each league and fanbase and accusing people of being racist in that regard is befuddling.

Anyways, so much for the welcome for Battle of California. I’m sure those writers appreciate being indirectly accused of racist overtones by their fellow SBN bloggers. It’s funny, because I don’t recall Atma essentially race-baiting way back when (even before the Yi Jianlian fiascos).
