Anyone who tells you it's December is correct. Anyone who kindly informs you that the playoffs don't start for another four months has their head on straight. Anyone who explains to you that two points won't make or break the Sharks season has evidently passed fifth-grade math.

But if anyone attempts to convince you that tonight is just another game, kindly tell them that they are full of it. And do something rash.

Star-divide

The Detroit Red Wings. Ponder that name for a minute. Let it marinate in your mouth. Let that red and white seep into your pores, let it consume your soul. Allow visions of Tomas Holmstrom and Chris Osgood to run wild in your mind; lifting Lord Stanley for all the world to see, drinking it's sweet nectar. Feel the Dark Side coarse through your veins. Accept it as a part of you, permit it entrance to the back of your throat till it becomes almost too much to bear.

Then spit that vile creature out.

Crush it beneath the soles of your shoes. Forsake every nightmare-inducing memory from your cortex, erase the last four years of disappointment. Forget everything you think you know about your own dreams and aspirations. Understand that the next sixty minutes will not guarantee a damn thing. But understand that the next sixty minutes will show us everything.

Some may make the excuse that the Sharks are coming off a back to back with Columbus; that we're banged up with injuries. Others may ponder just how the travel situation will affect the team. These are grown men ladies and gentlemen. Warriors. Our warriors.

Anyone who tells you tonight is just another game doesn't have a pulse.

Let's kick in the door to their house and raise some hell.

Go Sharks.

The two most important games remaining this year (2008)

In regards to the Sharks’ place in Bay Area sports.

Game 6 vs. Dallas was the first, but they lost, so this is it. Every time I wear my hats or my jerseys out and about, I get many comments: “Sharks looking good this season!” “I hear the Sharks are doing good!” “Sharks going all the way!” “I’m not much of a hockey fan, but go Sharks!” “They’re all we have this year!”

I think those last two comments are the most important. Here we are, in a non-traditional hockey area, with the best team in the league (and one of the best in history, so far), and people are just only now starting to notice, because the other teams are doing so poorly. The Warriors mattered for a week. The Raiders and A’s can’t get any breaks. The Giants lost a heartbreaker to a SoCal team, the Niners haven’t been the same since Steve Young left, Cal was #1 for five minutes before blowing it, and Stanford’s only recent claim to fame was beating a team in a game that didn’t really matter. Of the three teams that have had any success recently, the league for one of them folded (SaberCats in the AFL), one of them moved before “returning” two years later (Earthquakes), and hardly anyone cares about the other (Cal rugby, which is really a shame since they’ve won 24 championships since 1980, and have almost always been the most victorious sport at Cal).

But why do these two games matter more than the last 31? Because people have now heard that the Sharks are doing the best. And that they’re playing two very well-known teams, including the reigning champions. 99% of the people in the Bay Area (estimate) claim allegiance to the Sharks, given that the closest competition is in hated SoCal, and people always love to support a winner. I think that even those people that believe hockey is “barbaric” will be paying attention to these two games.

If they win the next two, expect a surge in the Sharks’ popularity. If they lose, well, expect them to come in the Conference Finals. Everyone here is a Sharks fan, they just don’t know they’re hockey fans yet.

Great post senor...

I am so unbelieveably pumped for this game… to bad I’ll be missing all of it due to my commute home.

it's going to be extremely difficult

to travel to the East Coast to play two teams in two days. The Wings would be a tough game in itself, now you add in travel and consecutive game factor and it’s nearly impossible. I’ve noticed the Sharks are starting to slip a bit. They need to get back to that #1 NHL team form quick. I think we can get back to form but not tonight. I predict a not-so-close loss tonight but a win when we go back to the Tank for NY.

That is not an excuse we can use

How many teams have come in to San Jose after playing one of the SoCal teams, (Ana. in particular) this year. I know the distance is less then Columbus to Det but which would you rather face on a back to back Col & Det or Ana. & SJ? I know I would pick Col & Det. That said I think the Sharks win 5 to 2 tonight…Go Sharks!

I am so excited for this game...

looks as though milan won’t be playing though, that dreaded upper body injury again.

Coach Todd McLellan said that keeping Michalek out of the lineup was pretty much a precautionary move after he was "dinged up a bit" with an upper body injury late that occurred late in the third period of last night’s game in Columbus.

Sucks to outplay them and find yourself down 2-0,

but there is plenty of time left and hopefully we can regroup.

I just got done tutoring...

and I see the score… two goals in about 90 seconds… and Ehrhoff is a minus – 2… and now creates a power play for Detroit…

I liked the new Ehrhoff… this sounds like the old guy.

That’s the problem with +/-. It’s kind of a garbage stat. Both of those goals had nothing to do with the defense at all.

Nabby let in two softies. Real soft.

Fear the Fin: Because our day jobs are overrated.

by Mr. K. on Dec 18, 2008 5:12 PM PST up reply actions

well if it's worth anything

the sharks definitely outplayed the wings in that period before the goals, just didn’t capitalize on a few of the good scoring chances they generated.

by mattman on Dec 18, 2008 5:14 PM PST up reply actions

Oh for sure, wasn’t trying to jump on ya. Nabby just played pretty poorly.

As for Boosh, I don’t think so. We’re going to live and die with Nabby, and I think he plays well down the stretch. He made a couple good saves at the end of that period.

Gotta play your best to beat the best :)

btw Am I still doing the recap tonight? And we can get you a stream (see idunno723’s comment above) if you can’t watch it on TV.
