Ron Wilson. That name has so many different connotations doesn't it? For all intents and purposes it's synonymous with San Jose Sharks hockey, much like Chris Pronger's relationship to the Broadway musical STOMP.
Everyone (including your humble author) is really high on Todd McLellan right now. But remember we haven't gone to battle in the playoffs with the man. We haven't even gotten halfway through a season with him at the helm. Hell, we haven't even hit our first losing streak. Things have been smooth sailing. Carefree. The best start you could wish for.
From a fanbase point of view, you enter a game knowing what you're going to see- a team that skates and shoots the puck. There's no wondering which San Jose team is going to show up, no wondering what sort of barb is going to be thrown in the media following a loss.
Something we saw all too much the last few seasons.
[Editor's Note]: Remember your SPG Picks for a chance to win a Sharks Banner courtesy of Carrol's Cove.
But emotions aside (and there's going to be a fair share of them tonight) let us remember results. The following is Wilson's record for when he was the Sharks Head Coach for the entire season:
| Year | W | L | T | O | Pts | Division | Playoffs |
| 2003-04 | 43 | 21 | 12 | 6 | 104 | 1st (from 5th yr before) | Lost Conf. Finals (CGY) |
| 2005-06 | 44 | 27 | N/A | 11 | 99 | 2nd | Lost Conf. Semis (EDM) |
| 2006-07 | 51 | 26 | N/A | 5 | 107 | 2nd | Lost Conf. Semis (DET) |
| 2007-08 | 49 | 23 | N/A | 10 | 108 | 1st | Lost Conf. Semis (DAL) |
| Totals | 187 | 97 | 12 | 32 | 418 | N/A (Top 2 each yr.) | Heartbreak |
That's a helluva list. About 28 franchises would take that performance (including all the heart-wrenching second round losses) and give him a shot the next season.
So before the puck drops tonight, let's remember that Wilson is the winningest coach in Sharks history, that he was behind the bench when the Sharks became legitimate contenders for the Stanley Cup. Are we glad he's gone? Yes, it was time for a change. But should we forget what kind of success he brought to this fair city? Should we not show our gratitude for the man who sat behind the most successful period of Team Teal?
I hope The Tank can show due respect for our ex-coach tonight. He left on Doug Wilson's terms, not his own.
A standing ovation sounds just about right to me.
Prediction: Sharks win 4-1. Share any Wilson stories/opinions in the comments.

Nice
I agree. RW made the Sharks contenders all the way into April. That’s more than you can say about Alou or Botchy.
I'm really excited for this game...
Ron Wilson was always a great coach, but his teams never had the passion that I see in this new, McLellan led team.
I will cheer Ron, but I’m glad the franchise has moved on.
Fear The Fin: Gloating during the season, crying during the playoffs.
Opposite
Meanwhile, in Toronto, his team so far has a passion that hasn’t been seen since the playoffs under Pat Quinn or the Pat Burns-led team.
I think a guy like Wilson, as good of a coach as he may be, is the kind that can eventually be tuned out once a team has reached a stage like where the Sharks are where the team is pretty much set. The incentive to respond to his brand of coaching gets lost at that point.

Yeah, when you’re in a fued with the Captain (Marleau) and don’t speak to him for a rumored six months, your time is just about finished.
How many fights can we expect to see tonight PPP? Burke seems to have the cattle prod glowing red since he came into town.
Fear The Fin: Where the second round is overrated.
I don't know about that...
I’d agree that Wilson is a good coach, but here’s the issue I have with your comment
If the Sharks players had tuned out Wilson, why the heck would they listen to McLellan? Wilson is an experienced coach and a proven winner, where McLellan is a young guy with no NHL head coaching experience. I don’t know if it’s the change of faces that has resulted in this increased intensity, or the fact that the Sharks are just so good that they would make me look like a competent head coach.
I’m just saying that I didn’t see this kind of play (i.e. heart, grit, and finish) with Wilson on our bench… I’ll attribute the change to McLellan until he proves me wrong.

It’s not his coaching record, it’s his personality. He’s definitely an old school type guy, willing to throw darts through the media to motivate his players.
That sort of thing has a short shelf life, especially on teams filled with a lot of skilled players.
Fear The Fin: Where the second round is overrated.
Still, it says alot to me that the team is playing so well for a first year coach.
Fear The Fin: Gloating during the season, crying during the playoffs.
by Matthew_Taylor on Dec 2, 2008 10:22 AM PST up reply actions
Definitely- but that’s my point. Wilson is going to get the most out of lower-tier guys (who the Leafs currently employ), but the fire and brimstone routine won’t be as affective for a more star studded lineup.
As for the Leafs playing well (and Wilson’s involvement with that), I couldn’t agree with you more.
Fear The Fin: Where the second round is overrated.
True, and I get your point. It is suprising to me, though, that the young players like Setoguchi, Plihal, Vlassic, etc are playing better under McLellan than they were under Wilson. I’ve heard often (in the media, blech) that they were often too afraid to make a mistake under Wilson, and therefore didn’t play up to their potential. That’s interesting to hear… especially when it’s said that Wilson gets more out of the lower level / rookie players.
I think we can end the debate here though, since I think we all agree that Wilson is a good coach… but it was probably time for him to move on. There may be alot of different factors that determine how the Sharks are playing (and how the Leafs are playing as well), but it’s easiest to attribute these changes to different coaches… it usually isn’t that simple.

by Matthew_Taylor on Dec 2, 2008 10:43 AM PST up reply actions
I think it goes to the mentality of the player. I remember Plank and Chen (I think) telling me when the Leafs hired Wilson that he will put those kids in positions to contribute but he won’t just give it to them. Some people don’t respond well to knowing that a mistake will cause a demotion.
Others will realize that what they have to do is cut out the mistakes. Where I can see people start tuning Wilson out is when the team is really good like the Sharks were last year and Wilson is left having to nitpick at things because they do almost everything well. At that point it goes from “God I gotta cut out mistakes or Ronny will kill me” to “Are you serious? THAT’s what you’re bitching about? Go eff yourself”

Also when we booed Oh Canada against Edmonton in the playoffs. For the record, I love that we boo the word ‘star’ in the national anthem when we play Dallas and I also thought the Edmonton thing was funny. Although, it was pretty stupid considering, at the time, we had something like 50% Canadian players. Really, I just don’t care much for national anthems.

About the Canadian national anthem booing
If I remember correctly, hat was retaliation for a supposed Edmonton booing of the U.S. national anthem. They were booing something else, but the TV editor made it seem like they were booing the Stars and Stripes.
Huh, I never heard about that.

Fear The Fin: Where the second round is overrated.
meh...
it’s a song. Sorry, if it bothers other people, but boo away. Whatever…
the booing of Star when playing the Stars is very cerebral. Original take on hating a division rival…
I also enjoy the fact that Sharks fans like to do the wave, an the whole Jaws thing for the power play. Games are fun at the tank, and I’d feel OK taking my daughtyer there in a Leafs jersey, knowing the heckling wouldn’t be too bad.
Now, LA. I was told to “go make some waffles Aunt Jemima” last night. What does that even mean…?

Waffles? Everyone knows she’s the pancake lady. Stupid Kings fans…..
Fear The Fin: Where the second round is overrated.
I’m not sure we’re original, sadly. I think it started because the Dallas fans scream ‘Stars’ at that point in the song. Since we can’t point and laugh at them to their face when they do it (you know, since they’re in Dallas), we have to boo when given the chance.
As for the Aunt Jemima comment, I can’t see any way that makes any sense.
Haha, just as I was writing that Aunt Jemima goes on pancakes, not waffles, Mr. Plank beats me to it. /shakes fist
