Star-divide

First Period

Big Picture: I love these types of games. The Blues did an excellent job (as they always seem to do against the Sharks) flying in the first period. The Sharks didn't look particularly bad- the Blues just looked particularly better.

Snapshots: Dear Douglas Murray. If you're going to pinch, take the puck not the man. I love the energy you're trying to create at the beginning of the game (and that was one hell of a hit you leveled on Berglund), but that energy is nullified when it leads to a goal.... The first power play was stink. Couldn't find passing lines, and the lack of movement from our forwards meant we couldn't create passing lanes.... The Blues finish their checks. All of them.... After the second to last TV timeout (six minutes left or so?), we saw some energy. Here's the big difference in that span- the Sharks initiated body contact. It's been a common critique of this team, and one that was very applicable in the first period. The Sharks looked a little on their heels, but once they started laying on the body during the forecheck, the Blues had trouble generating anything. If I'm running the Sharks (ha!), Staubitz gets a call up for the playoffs and lines up on the fourth line.... Patrick Marleau is the Sharks best player. Period. What vision and stick control to generate that quasi breakaway....

Second Period

Big Picture: The troubles generating a sustained attack in the offensive zone continued, and only timely goals from Cheech and Grier put the Sharks ahead at the end of the period.

Snapshots: Cheech is great in the corners. Make no doubt about it, whether or not he's getting on the board, the guy is good at supporting down low in the defensive zone and helping cycle the puck offensively.... Nabokov with some solid saves in the first ten minutes to keep the Sharks alive.... San Jose was back on their heels again, with St. Louis relentless on the forecheck.... Is it 05-06 again? What an area pass by Thornton to find Cheech (who was moving his feet!). A pure goal scorers goal. The Control Room (er, my cell phone) receives a transmission from Corey Mulhair. "He's alive!!!" Why yes he is, good sir. Why yes he is..... The Blues are so aggressive in pressuring the puck (both at even strength and on the penalty kill). The Sharks continued to have difficulty moving the puck up the ice. The Blues did an excellent job at playing zone to zone.... The Sharks may have been up 2-1 with twenty left to go, but watching the game you wouldn't have known it....

Third Period

Big Picture: The Sharks best period by far saw some excellent scoring opportunities, with none of them managing to find their way to the back of the net.

Snapshots: Evgeni Nabokov may come out to challenge shooters a bit too much (a contention made amongst my friends, as well as some of you here), but that was a solid play by him. The shooter is isolated, he takes away the angle. Unfortunately, Winchester has his number. Big time.... Power play was struggling getting traffic in front of Legace.... The Gooch has been quiet the last few games, and his ice time in the third period really showed it.... Play opened up in the third period and the Sharks proved that when the ice is open, they are going to generate a load of scoring opportunities....

Overtime

Big Picture: Substitute most of the game here; the Blues had us playing in the wrong zone for almost all of this five minute segment.

Snapshots: Sick move by Weaver (?) to flip the puck up and get himself an excellent opportunity.

Shootout

Big Picture: That huge fan sitting between the two teams benches. Looks like he had his fair share of Christmas cookies.

Snapshots: Clowe had a sick backhand move.... Legace read Boyle like a book.... Winchester owns Nabokov. Trade deadline pickup for Detroit? Just sayin'....

All in all, a pretty ho hum game from the Sharks. I feel dirty taking that loser point. Dirty.

Go Sharks.

Not one of our best games, gotta admit

The Sharks website is optimistic

“Sharks earn point in St. Louis.” That’s one way of looking at it…

Sure

Cause that’s how I look at it…

Well...

Did they win a point or not?

by mattman on Dec 27, 2008 9:23 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yes...

But the “glass is half full” headlines appear to be made to appease fair-weather fans who might now be overly concerned that their (newfound?) team is “struggling.”

“Oh, a point? That’s good, isn’t it?”

Could just be my take on it…

Hmmmm...

Today, there is NO mention of the S.O. loss on the Sharks home page’s 5 stories. They DO mention the 5-0 victory over Vancouver, 2 games ago.

I’m a firm believer that you have to take the good with the bad – you can focus on the positive, but to completely pretend that the bad didn’t happen is just ludicrous.

They won a point, I don’t know how much they earned it though.

Booo-ins

I wouldn’t be frustrated with a loss to the lowly Blues if it weren’t for the Bruins chuggin’ right along on the Eastern victory train. That and the West’s comeback kids in Red & White, also fighting for the ultimate home ice advantage aka the Pres. trophy. The Sharks simply can’t leave an easy 2 points on the table. Not with the aforementioned clubs breathing down their necks.

Damn you Winchester! (flashbacks to ’06)

I'm a happy seal

True about the Bruins

But the Red Wings lost yesterday to Nashville in regulation, and today in O.T. or the S.O. (I forget, and I’m too lazy to look it up). So… the immediate danger of them closing in appears to be over. We’ll still root for Chicago on January 1st…

Or should we? Last I checked, Chicago had some games in hand against Detroit, AND was closing in on points. Hmmmm…

Ok, you’re right – still root for Chicago. Eazy peezy.

I feel partially responsible for the loss, as I forgot to partake in my game day ritual (listening to Metallica’s “Enter Sandman”). Its kinda scary, actually – the four times that I didn’t all ended up being losses o_0

But, on a less strangely coincidental note, the Blues seem to play the Sharks really well this year – all games were 1-goal nailbiters. They’re good at winning the battles in the corners, something that the Sharks usually dominate other teams on, and are able to disrupt the D. I don’t know how many times I yelled at the TV tonight after a dumb giveaway by the D; I do, however, know exactly how many times they gave it away in OT (five, all of which were converted into excellent scoring chances and caused my mom to yell loudly in my ear).

Nabokov and Cheechoo were the best players tonight. Outside of the shootout and the first goal, Nabby was on. All the shots the Blues took were dangerous (largely because they were from odd-man rushes off of giveaways), and many could have easily resulted in a goal. Cheechoo, on the line with Thornton and Grier (WTF?) got back to his scoring ways with a goal and assist. And nothing surprised me more than seeing Grier getting a goal, especially since it was practically an empty net, lol.

Shootout-wise, Clowe has been money this season. I think he’s 3-for-3 or something else that means that he scored on all his SO chances. Boyle and Pavs are usually pretty good, but I think their less-than-stellar games tonight transferred over to the SO. Nabby was a little off in the SO today, but he didn’t get injured like the last Blues shootout, so its all good in my book.

All in all, the Sharks were off, the Blues were on, and so the Sharks lost.

I gotta say

That is my thoughts exactly. And the giveaways is what killed us, especially in the overtime though. I nearly had a heart attack everytime. Everyone looked a little lethargic out there and the line changes didn’t make much sense until the new top line got the two goals. Am I wrong if that was the strangest line-up ever? I never thought I’d see Grier and Thornton on the ice together, but there you go.
Cheechoo looked awesome tonight, something sparked in him and I just hope it stays. Everyone else though (besides Nabby in the 2nd and 3rd period) was pretty disappointing. But I can’t say it was a a game we deserved to win, considering how well the Blues played and how porrly the Sharks did.
Oh well, there’s always the Stars game, but for that one I will be furious if we lose. Turco officially freaks me out.

GOOD GRIEF MAN

I will FedEx you copies of the Black Album if necessary – you must bump that s*** on Monday, Wednesday, and if necessary THROUGH JUNE 15 (um, last possible day of the Cup Finals).

Don't worry

After the outcome of tonight’s game, I made sure to put Enter Sandman on every iTunes playlist I have, including ones entitled “Disney movie soundtracks” and “non-annoying Christmas songs”. Multiple times, in some cases. Its the least I can do.

Phew...

I’m now reassured. This also saves me on FedEx fees.
