[Open Thread] Game Five, Western Conference QF: Calgary Flames at San Jose Sharks

(Series tied 2-2)

Y'all don't need me to tell you this is huge, right?  Didn't think so.

For the Sharks, they need to maintain the level of play demonstrated in the second and third periods of Game Four.  Nothing less will suffice against a game and grimly determined Calgary squad, especially with Mikka Kiprusoff trying to single-handedly steal the series.  It will be intense.  At least the Sharks had better be.

Okay, let's drop the puck.

Nothing on PP

Back and forth.  Lots of hitting.  And hugging after the play.  But they ain't loving!

Shelly is completely inside Calgary's heads. Every time he's on the ice they lose focus and focus instead on him.

5:20 1st

That was close... Nabby was without a stick for about 20 seconds, but SJ finally cleared.

More back and forth.  A few scoring chances for each side.

EEEK!  Big Joe gave the puck away and Calgary hit the post!

Major "hugging" after the play.  No penalties.

by Diecast Dude on Apr 17, 2008 7:49 PM PDT reply actions

End 1st

Even more "hugging" after the horn.  Don't think there are any penalties.

Sharks had advantage during first half of period, Flames slight edge latter half.  Very wide open at both ends of the ice.

Calgary definitely brought their refs tonight.  Ah well.  Gotta play through it.

Memo to Joe Thornton

Next time you're on a shorthanded breakaway...

... try shooting before you're behind the net.

He tried but it slipped off his backhand on the

replay.  ITS ALL GOOD NOW THOUGH!!!  Pavelski!!!

He just did something that tells me he is growing up real fast.  HE FINALLY TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF TO CLEAR THE ZONE!!  He usually just passes it....

6:07 2nd

Flames are getting away with all kinds of cheap shots.  Sharks need to start doing a much better job of clearing the puck out of their end.

Big Joe to the C!!!

2-1 SHAAAAAAARRRRRRKSSSSS!!!  PATTY !!!!!  SOUPY!!!!  BIG JOE!!!

End 2nd

This flirting with disaster in their own end routine has got to stop!  But they have the lead, and that's what matters.
SJ is doing a good job of forcing Calgary to play wide open end to end, a game in which the Flames can't hope to keep up.  Still, Kipper is keeping them on the game, so this is far from over.

Sharks putting heavy pressure on.  Doing much better with puck in own end.

It's far from over.  Flames score on the PP.  4-2 Sharks.

5:50 3rd

SJ is playing a prevent offense, if you will... working on keeping the puck in Calgary's end, but not as much at trying to score.

by Diecast Dude on Apr 17, 2008 9:30 PM PDT reply actions

OMG!!!! COME ON SHARKS!!!!

4-3 Sharks!!!  One Minute of DEFENSE!!!!!  DEFENSE DEFENSE DEFENSE!!!!  Clear the Zone!!

Nervous time.  Calgary pulls the goalie and scores.  SJ being too timid.

Sharks win!

Pavelski 3rd star, Cheechoo 2nd, Marleau 1st.

Couldn't agree more.

Marleau is coming to play. So much respect for him right now.

F yeah

unfortunately had to miss the game due to the obligation of going to an A's game (never again). But thought you'd all might like to know that they showed highlights of the game at the Coliseum (3-1 sharks in 3rd) and the place went nuts. Place was louder for the sharks lead than they were for the A's. Go Sharks.

by drink409 on Apr 17, 2008 11:09 PM PDT reply actions

Great atmosphere

I only watched the game on television, but the fans at the Tank were really loud. Props to them and the Sharks for pulling out a fantastic win.
