[Open Thread] Game Two, Western Conference SF: Dallas Stars at San Jose Sharks

(Stars lead 1-0)

Once again... let's try this again.

One strongly suspects how, given Ron Wilson's strong words after Game One, the Sharks will be far more aggressive in their shotblocking efforts.  I don't remember Patrick Marleau doing the bunnyhop on Dallas' game winner, but obviously there it was.  One also suspects the effort to check Mike Modano hard along with generate traffic in front of Marty Turco will also see a substantial increase.  Or at least it better.

Okay, let's drop the puck.

(14:31 1st) Thus far...

... it's the Sharks & Stars.  Dallas is playing the trap to perfection.  It's up to San Jose to figure out how to break it, since the clutch / grab / hold isn't going to be called.  Some good chances on the power plays, but no conversions.  Sharks have done a good job of limiting Dallas' offense.

Finally a PP Goal

only took 3 this period.

(9:01 1st) Sharks back on PP

They need to take advantage (again) of the Stars lack of discipline.

(4:23 1st) Bad things happen...

... when you don't clear the puck.  Morrow is schooling Ehrhoff behind the net.

(End 1st) Fit to be tied

Pardon the pun.  Sharks need to start winning the puck possession battles in their own end.  And put more direct pressure on Turco.

(13:35 2nd) Ouch

Great stop by Dallas on that otherwise sure-fire tip-in.  Ah well.

by Diecast Dude on Apr 27, 2008 7:13 PM PDT reply actions

Seems like Dallas is able to hold it in the Sharks zone but the Sharks are forced to play the offensive zone on transition only.

(5:06 2nd) Michalek!

That is using your skills to the max!

(1:02 2nd) Business is picking up

The Morrow line is a big problem for the Sharks.

Some REALLY BoneHead passes at the end...

But really glad to have a lead right now

by drink409 on Apr 27, 2008 7:37 PM PDT reply actions

(End 2nd) At least they're ahead

Still way too many bad plays with the puck in their own end.  They are doing better at breaking the press and generating scoring chances, but this is still anyone's game.

(19:28 3rd)

A giveaway bites the Sharks.

I went to grab something to eat

How did the Stars get 2 goals in less than a minute?

by Caught Backcourt on Apr 27, 2008 8:03 PM PDT reply actions

not sure if you were filled in yet but..

Pavelski gave it away in the Sharks zone leading to a goal.  Then a BS penalty on the Sharks to make up for a blown call by the refs earlier led to a PP goal for Modano.  Lame.

by drink409 on Apr 27, 2008 8:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Thanks

I was following on the Yahoo boxscore, but the only thing it reports is "Modano, PP Goal."

Nothing the Sharks can do about blown calls, but they really need to start tightening up their game.

(16:21 3rd) Hoo boy.
Questionable at best call against Ehrhoff, given how most everything else has been ignored, plus even more timid and laced with wretched passing defensive play leads to a 3-2 defensive play.

(12:40 3rd) Hoo boy. Again.
Very bad time to abandon self-discipline by Rivet.

(8:20 3rd) {{shakes head}}

This is more than a little frustrating to watch.

(6:47 3rd) A Dallas time out?

Wonder why, since most everything is going their way.

Dang Sharks!

Don't miss your assignments!

(6:05 3rd) Goodnight.

The Sharks know exactly what Dallas is going to do, and does nothing to counter it.  Meanwhile, they continue to routinely fumble the puck.  Expect some lineup changes for the next game.  Be nice if they'd grow some between now and then.

No Intensity, No Sense of Urgency

Looks like there's gonna be no Game 5 back in HP.

by jtoj on Apr 27, 2008 8:23 PM PDT reply actions

True

I had such high hopes for the Sharkies, but they are playing like it was good enough just to be invited to the dance.

Yeah

Seems like we're heading down the same path as last year.

(2:45 3rd) Wonder if Ron Wilson...

... will really shake things up and start Boucher next game.  He just came in for Nabokov, who went straight to the locker room.

by Diecast Dude on Apr 27, 2008 8:27 PM PDT reply actions

Wow...

many, many mistakes.  Hopefully we can take two in Dallas.

by drink409 on Apr 27, 2008 8:31 PM PDT reply actions

Open net goal

the cherry on top of a ***tty sharks performance.

(End 3rd) Good grief.

That was as embarrassing as it gets.  Total ineptitude.  What's worse, they gave no indication of caring.  Very disheartening.

They've now put themselves into a position where they have to win back to back games  on the road just to even the series.  Swell.

by Diecast Dude on Apr 27, 2008 8:37 PM PDT reply actions

Last season

weren't we up two on the Red Wings only for them to come back?

The Sharks can do it if they play to their capacity, with their backs to the wall.

For all our sakes, they better collectively look themselves in the mirror and get that hunger they should have for the rest of the postseason.
