[Open Thread] Western Conference SF Game Five: Dallas Stars at San Jose Sharks

(Stars lead series 3-1)

Back in the mid '70s, the late Tug McGraw collaborated on a comic strip named Scroogie that I enjoyed.  In one of the strips, the baseball team Scroogie was on was trying to catch another team for the pennant.  The first three panels each had a different player on the team calling out a rallying cry: "It's do or die!"  "It's now or never!"  "There's no tomorrow!"  The final panel showed Scroogie, a relief pitcher on the team, standing on the mound thinking, "We'd better win this thing soon... we're running out of clichés."

This pretty much sums up tonight's game, which for the Sharks is a now or never/do or die/there's no tomorrow/Sydney or the bush event... again, since they faced the same scenario two days ago.  Everyone has to actually play as opposed to showing up, the best players have to be the best players because you know full well the Stars' best players will be on top of it, and all parties concerned have to play the entire game with no nap periods in the middle of a period.  Or the beginning or end, for that matter.

Okay, let's drop the puck.

(Pre-game) Best sign...

... a cute little blonde girl, maybe ten years old, holding up a very handmade sign: "Sharks are better than Hannah Montana!"

(16:02 1st) Good start

Smart aggresive tone to play thus far.

(10:16 1st) Last three shifts have been weak

Forwards aren't doing enough to support the defense, which is taking too long to move the puck thus allowing Dallas forechecking opportunities.

(5:33 1st) Sharks need to pick it up

Stars have had the better of play the past few minutes.

(End 1st) Good start, anemic finish

Sharks were strong during first half of the period, but fell into a passive, indecisive mode during the latter portion.  SJ needs to get back into taking the play to Dallas, not letting them dictate the pace.  Forwards need to start helping out more in their own end.

damn...goal stars

i hate that rule.

(9:56 2nd) Good news / bad news

Bad news is Sharks are playing hot potato with the puck.

Good news is they're on the PP.

NO GOAL!!!

could have gone either way...give it to the home team!!

by drink409 on May 2, 2008 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

No...

They easily blew that call.

How can it be a distinct kicking motion when Morrow wasn't even looking at the puck?

I don't want to hear any more bellyaching from Sharks fans about the officiating after that call.

by Gravypan on May 2, 2008 8:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Easily could have gone either way!!

Plus this call going towards the sharks is nothing like blowing the play dead while the puck was clearly still moving past the goaltender into the goal.  That was just moronic.  Go "bellyache" back in your own thread chump.

(End 2nd) That's what happens...

... when you stop applying pressure on the attack (no forechecking) and then play like scared little rabbits in a game of throw away the puck as fast as possible no matter the consequences.

To state the obvious, this isn't looking very promising.

(17:37 3rd) I believe the poem goes...

... "do not go gentle into that good night."

In other words, don't quit.

by Diecast Dude on May 2, 2008 9:02 PM PDT reply actions

Well they got that one right

Pretty clear the puck went in off Morrow's glove there.

by Gravypan on May 2, 2008 9:06 PM PDT up reply actions

yup

no question there

by drink409 on May 2, 2008 9:07 PM PDT up reply actions

GOAAAAAL!!!

About time we got back into this thing...Way to not get a stick on the puck twice Morrow!!!

by drink409 on May 2, 2008 9:09 PM PDT reply actions

TIE GAME!!!

Again thank you Morrow for not being able to place the puck on your stick....TWICE!!!!

OT MFer's

OT hasn't been the best for the Sharks, but let's get it done tonight.

by drink409 on May 2, 2008 9:35 PM PDT reply actions

(End 3rd) Whew.

That was intense.  Sharks showed major league guts by not packing it in.

Now they have to do the same in overtime.

You want drama on a Friday night, you got it.

SHARKS WIN!! SHARKS WIN!!!

Texans & Stars "FANS" everywhere cry!!!
