[Open Thread] Western Conference SF Game Six: San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars

(Stars lead series 3-2)

It's now or never / do or die / there's no tomorrow / make or break time.  Again.  For the third game in a row.

One of the oddities of this series has been that in the first five games, the team that has scored first has lost.  This could lead to the interesting scenario of both teams spending all three periods telling the other one "no, you shoot," which means a scoreless tie going into overtime.  I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.

Okay, let's drop the puck.

get Dallas thinking about it and squeezing their sticks!

Stars came to play, and hit.....

now the Sharks need to counter with some physical play of their own.....

(17:18 1st) Not showing much so far

Too much loosey-goosey with the puck in their own end, no pressure on Turco.  SJ needs to get going.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 6:22 PM PDT reply actions

That would have been a goal...

sucks we got a penalty.

this is a danderous time on the PP........

Sharks ned to kill this and take momentum

Stars are hitting hard & getting shots on Nabby.  I'm surprised it's still 0-0.  I hope the Sharks step up here.

(10:35 1st) Make that YIPES!!!

Good grief. The way Carle stood there with the puck in front of his own net, not making any kind of play until Dallas stole the puck from him... unacceptable.

It's obvious nothing is going to be called tonight, so the Sharks need to play accordingly.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 6:30 PM PDT reply actions

in the 1st 3 games of this series a Sharks PK....

...was an auto goal for Dallas, but these last 2 games the Sharks PK really has showed up.

WOW!!! I thought the ref might let that go too...

I guess that one was too obvious to let go!!

http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/

by OakFoSho on May 4, 2008 6:35 PM PDT reply actions

(8:03 1st) That one was so obvious...

... they had to call that trip on Dallas.  Still, Sharks are fortunate this game is still tied 0-0. They really need to get their heads in the game.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 6:36 PM PDT reply actions

agreed

I know it's the playoffs & the refs let them play rather than call penalties, but with the Stars playing a ton more physical this series it seems the Sharks are getting shafted on non-calls.

(5:44 1st) Not very good, gentlemen

The Sharks... what is their deal? Dallas is too good to play against indecisively. And what is Thornton doing out there? He's playing like he's lost.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 6:40 PM PDT reply actions

Announcers.....

"Dallas looks at this game like its their Game 7"

so if the Sharks can pull this out, they have all the advantage in the real game 7

Find a way to get out of the 1st period 0-0.....

and the Sharks can regroup

by OakFoSho on May 4, 2008 6:42 PM PDT reply actions

They don't have seats where Dallas plays...

... they must not, since no one in the lower bowl ever sits down. They must think it shows enthusiasm or something.

Almost!!

at least we come out with a PP

by drink409 on May 4, 2008 6:46 PM PDT up reply actions

I'm glad the Refs learned not to blow the play dead with the puck still moving around near the Goalie...Think they learned something from game 2?

It's going to be difficult getting anything lost distance past him tonight.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 6:48 PM PDT reply actions

hope he wins the Vezina Trophy

by drink409 on May 4, 2008 6:49 PM PDT reply actions

(End 1st) Improved as it went along...

... but still far from stellar. Sharks need to pick it up in their zone, and definitely need to start crashing the net far more often. But at least they're not losing.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 6:50 PM PDT reply actions

(17:12 2nd) Drew's ripping Vlasic a new one...

(15:46 2nd) The Sharks have got to follow...

(8:27 2nd) Business is picking up

Intense action at both ends of the ice. Sharks are making chances happen, but they need to start finishing the thing by scoring. (That should get me the "stating the obvious" award for the evening.)

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 7:25 PM PDT reply actions

More ticky tack penalties called on the Sharks...

Every Shark PP has been blatant Star penalties, the Sharks have only had one legitimate penalty on Rivet

The Sharks are getting chances....

(14:10 3rd) Here's a question...

... if this game was being called by the book, how man penalties would there be against both teams? I'm thinking the hinge on the penalty boxes doors would be wearing out by now.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 8:09 PM PDT reply actions

Playoff Whistles.....

few and far between......and unfortunately very inconsistent.

http://mvn.com/nhl-sharks/

by OakFoSho on May 4, 2008 8:11 PM PDT up reply actions

I was thinking the same thing...

right, the Stars are more physical & subsequently have made more cross checks, interference, and other non-called penalties.  If this wasn't a playoff game I think the Sharks would have been on a PP for 20 minutes so far.  But since this is a playoff game & the refs are letting them play, the Sharks need to step up and make some more physical moves and put some Stars on their asses.

by drink409 on May 4, 2008 8:12 PM PDT up reply actions

Well

Dallas is getting all the calls though cause the refs are trying to make up for game 5 and give Dallas the series.  TheSharks need to play Shark hockey.  That means Forecheck and cycle!

sad display of sportsmanship

If a player of the opposing team is down on the ice is injured and not moving much. I find it disrespectful to just leave to your locker rooms like that.

by Athletix Man on May 4, 2008 8:36 PM PDT reply actions

(End 3rd) Great start, scary finish

The Sharks kept up the pressure and finally scored early in the period. After that, they maintained the pressure for long stretches of the period. There were a few scary moments, and Dallas started coming on near the end. The injury to Michalek will be a challenge that hopefully the Sharks can answer by notching the overtime win.

Absolutely

On Nabby's first act of grand larceny, I think that puck was about 2 inches away from crossing the goal line.

Then later in the period, Turco says touche on a double pad stack robbery on Marleau.

Now, everybody catch their breath.

(End OT) How many times...

... can the Sharks tempt fate? Nabokov has made incredible save after incredible save. This can't keep happening. The Sharks need to find the resolve and will to win. They have to stop making stupid mistakes. Yes, they're exhausted. But so is Dallas, yet they're making plays. The Sharks aren't making enough of them. They need to regroup and refocus. If not, this series will be over.

I also miss the late Tom Mees. Got his autograph once when he was doing a game at the Tank. Never thought it'd turn into such a melancholy souvenir.

(End 2OT) Who'll give first?

Sooner or later someone is going to make a play. Or a horrific mistake the other team will take advantage of. Maybe both.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 10:10 PM PDT reply actions

If the Sharks win this game they win the series..

I mean, how could Dallas come back from consecutive OT losses not to mention a triple OT loss?

Please Lord!!  Bless us with a victory!!

(14:58 3OT) Wasted opportunity

Nothing on that PP. Granted they're exhausted, but it would have been nice to have at least gotten a chance out of it.

You know the Refs are gonna want to even it up!

I give it two minutes before the fantom penalty is called

(11:28 3OT) Sharks have GOT to start...

... getting the puck out of their zone when they have the chance!

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 10:37 PM PDT reply actions

(10:36 3OT) Sharks need to somehow make...

Detroits sleeping nicely tonight

Tomorrow is going to be a tough day for both teams especially if there is a game 7 to prepare for.

by drink409 on May 4, 2008 11:00 PM PDT up reply actions

(2:08 3OT) If the Sharks win this game...

... they will have accomplished the hitherto thought impossible:

Make a Game Seven seem anticlimatic.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 10:54 PM PDT reply actions

Stars are using oxygen!!

its gives you big ups, but it makes the downs even worse.  Hopefully the Sharks can take advantage at the right time.  If they can sustain a long cycle, Dallas will pay for using oxygen

(End 3OT) What was I saying a few hours ago...

... about a Game Eight?

It's now what the Sharks are shooting for.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 10:57 PM PDT reply actions

Wow!! 4th OT!! This has to be getting historical

as far as length of time!!

HEY WE ARE PLAYING GAME 8 RIGHT NOW!!

I feel like it's a NFL Sunday right now...

...And I've watched the first two games and I'm getting ready for that Sunday Night Game.

This is crazy!

I wonder how many hockey fans

are still watching this on the east coast.  Its 2:00am.

by OakFoSho on May 4, 2008 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

I'd almost say zero...

I know they love their hockey out there but it's the western conference...  Maybe some die hard Bruins fans pulling for Thorton but that's it.

by drink409 on May 4, 2008 11:09 PM PDT up reply actions

If the Sharks win...

...We'll definitely see Nabby's save in the 1st on a CSN Bay Area "30 second time out".

Now does that make their highlight if they lose?

by drink409 on May 4, 2008 11:11 PM PDT reply actions

This is the 8th longest playoff game in history..

32 minutes shy of the record!!

Don't know what to say, really.

Other than it hurts.

by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 11:26 PM PDT reply actions

We've known that feeling a number of times...

...these past few years, Dude.

Still, major props go your team's way for pushing the Stars to the limit to finally end this series. From you guy's standpoint, I'm sure you're all wonder what took them so long to engage in this series.

I don't know how much gas the Stars wil have left in the tank against Detroit, but it can't be very much.

At any rate, it's just past three where I'm at (yeah, I went to bed around 1:00 CDT and deserve all the ribbing for not being a trooper, etc.) so I'll just close with this was a fantastic and nerve racking series and I enjoyed reading your blog and interacting in a few of the gameday threads.

Sharks and their fans have nothing to hang their heads over in this one.
