[Open Thread] Western Conference SF Game Six: San Jose Sharks at Dallas Stars
It's now or never / do or die / there's no tomorrow / make or break time. Again. For the third game in a row.
One of the oddities of this series has been that in the first five games, the team that has scored first has lost. This could lead to the interesting scenario of both teams spending all three periods telling the other one "no, you shoot," which means a scoreless tie going into overtime. I doubt it, but stranger things have happened.
Okay, let's drop the puck.

Must weather the early storm and take control....
get Dallas thinking about it and squeezing their sticks!
Stars came to play, and hit.....
now the Sharks need to counter with some physical play of their own.....
(17:18 1st) Not showing much so far
Too much loosey-goosey with the puck in their own end, no pressure on Turco. SJ needs to get going.
That would have been a goal...
sucks we got a penalty.

this is a danderous time on the PP........
Sharks ned to kill this and take momentum
Good start to the kill.......
One more minute.....
kill kill kill
Great kill,
no shots
wow
Stars are hitting hard & getting shots on Nabby. I'm surprised it's still 0-0. I hope the Sharks step up here.

(10:35 1st) Make that YIPES!!!
Good grief. The way Carle stood there with the puck in front of his own net, not making any kind of play until Dallas stole the puck from him... unacceptable.
It's obvious nothing is going to be called tonight, so the Sharks need to play accordingly.
They are calling all the penalties on the Sharks
in the 1st 3 games of this series a Sharks PK....
...was an auto goal for Dallas, but these last 2 games the Sharks PK really has showed up.

Need to Kill this off!!
This is nervous time.......
WOW!!! I thought the ref might let that go too...
I guess that one was too obvious to let go!!
(8:03 1st) That one was so obvious...
... they had to call that trip on Dallas. Still, Sharks are fortunate this game is still tied 0-0. They really need to get their heads in the game.
That was interfearence on Marleau as he entered
the zone!
agreed
I know it's the playoffs & the refs let them play rather than call penalties, but with the Stars playing a ton more physical this series it seems the Sharks are getting shafted on non-calls.

ROFL!!!
Iginla Playoff Commercial!! Is he still in the playoffs??
(5:44 1st) Not very good, gentlemen
The Sharks... what is their deal? Dallas is too good to play against indecisively. And what is Thornton doing out there? He's playing like he's lost.
Announcers.....
"Dallas looks at this game like its their Game 7"
so if the Sharks can pull this out, they have all the advantage in the real game 7
Find a way to get out of the 1st period 0-0.....
and the Sharks can regroup
Whats the deal with the low camera angle?1
They don't have seats where Dallas plays...
... they must not, since no one in the lower bowl ever sits down. They must think it shows enthusiasm or something.
Also
I'm glad the Refs learned not to blow the play dead with the puck still moving around near the Goalie...Think they learned something from game 2?

Great Work by the Sharks at the end of this perio
(1.1 1st) Good save by Turco
It's going to be difficult getting anything lost distance past him tonight.
Nabby is why it's still 0-0
hope he wins the Vezina Trophy
by drink409 on May 4, 2008 6:49 PM PDT reply actions
(End 1st) Improved as it went along...
... but still far from stellar. Sharks need to pick it up in their zone, and definitely need to start crashing the net far more often. But at least they're not losing.
(17:12 2nd) Drew's ripping Vlasic a new one...
... for playing passive. Hopefully Zettler is doing the same.
A bettr start to the 2nd....
aided by the PP but still a better job
The VS announcers seem to be favoring Dallas
the way they keep talking
But of course...
... who wouldn't want the non-stop thrill and drama of a Dallas-Detroit conference final?
/sarcasm off
(15:46 2nd) The Sharks have got to follow...
... JR's lead. He's playing hard and making things happen. The rest of the team is painfully inconsistent.
Well
The first team to score has lost every game.....
We will see
The Sharks will not be shut out in this game.....
so I am not yet worried. I will be worried if Dallas get another.
(12;58 2nd) Oie boie...
... one of those "now why didn't that puck go in the Dallas net" moments. Ah well.
Let get obe back on the PP....
Great job drawing that PP Cheech!!
(11:38 2nd) It would behoove SJ...
... to score on this power play, assuming they are in the mood to be behooved.
Don't worry about one goal.....
the Sharks weren't going to win anyway if they can score one, so have faith, they will get it back
This is gettting good!
(8:27 2nd) Business is picking up
Intense action at both ends of the ice. Sharks are making chances happen, but they need to start finishing the thing by scoring. (That should get me the "stating the obvious" award for the evening.)
More ticky tack penalties called on the Sharks...
Every Shark PP has been blatant Star penalties, the Sharks have only had one legitimate penalty on Rivet
The VS announcers Dallas Bias is starting to piss
me off!
YEOWW!
That puck just laying there in front of Nabokov after the save... does this team ever do anything the easy way?
Ice is tilted towards Dallas end!!
Sharks need to keep this pressure up!
The Sharks are getting chances....
...& the puck is bound to get past Turco. I really think this game is coming down to which goal tender makes the most saves. Both are playing lights out so far.
by drink409 on May 4, 2008 7:40 PM PDT reply actions
Strap up boys.....
The Sharks will give it everything they have in the 3rd, cause there going home otherwise!
(End 2nd) Once trailing, they started playing
Sharks turned it on after giving up the goal. No score by them, and more than a few frightening moments. But they're generating chances. Keep fighting, gentlemen.
GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL GOAL!!!!
1-1 AHAHHAHAHAHAAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
ARE THEY GOING TO ROB US!!!!?????
(16:00 3rd) Since the tying goal...
... Stars have been trying to outmuscle the Sharks, constantly throwing hits. Sharks have been holding their own and generating some scoring chances.
The Stars are Pressing!!
AHAHAHHAAAHAHHAHHAHA PRESURE PRESURE!!!
Have Faith......
That was my thinking coming into tonight.....
The Bay is "We Believe" Territory!!
(14:10 3rd) Here's a question...
... if this game was being called by the book, how man penalties would there be against both teams? I'm thinking the hinge on the penalty boxes doors would be wearing out by now.
Playoff Whistles.....
few and far between......and unfortunately very inconsistent.
I was thinking the same thing...
right, the Stars are more physical & subsequently have made more cross checks, interference, and other non-called penalties. If this wasn't a playoff game I think the Sharks would have been on a PP for 20 minutes so far. But since this is a playoff game & the refs are letting them play, the Sharks need to step up and make some more physical moves and put some Stars on their asses.

Hardest working man in Hockey.....
JR!!
I could be getting ahead of myself......
but could this be the 4th OT game in one series?
EPIC!!
OMG IS THAT ICING OR ANOTHER WEAK PENALTY!!
(7:44 3rd) That was a great stretch of action...
... by both sides. Sharks need to keep pressing and going to the net whenever possible.
LETS GO SHARKS!!!!!!
Is there anything better than.....
elimination Playoff hockey games?
Stars on their heels and feeling the Pressure!!!
AHAHAAAAH
COME ON SHARKS BRING THIS THING HOME FOR GAME 7!!
Woah! Head Rush!!
Too Much Adrenalin
5:09 left to put a stake in Dallas psyche.....
and send the Dallas faithful home pissed and depressed!!
Or we go to OT!! Make it Happen!!
Go Sharks
OMG!!
THe puck just floated in the crease forever!!
Need to creat Havoc infront of Turco!!
Wow Whistles tucked and put away
looks like they were thrown off the ice
that last minute was tough
by drink409 on May 4, 2008 8:32 PM PDT up reply actions
Wow!!
That was a big hit.....
Hopefully the Sharks will rally around Milan and get the game winner!
sad display of sportsmanship
If a player of the opposing team is down on the ice is injured and not moving much. I find it disrespectful to just leave to your locker rooms like that.
(End 3rd) Great start, scary finish
The Sharks kept up the pressure and finally scored early in the period. After that, they maintained the pressure for long stretches of the period. There were a few scary moments, and Dallas started coming on near the end. The injury to Michalek will be a challenge that hopefully the Sharks can answer by notching the overtime win.
VS announcers predicting Stars victory in OT
We saw the Sharks respond one game after...
Marleau was hit against Calgary, hopefully it doesn't take that long this time.

Sharks have nothing left to lose.....
just go for it and trust Nabby!!
(16:06 OT) Sharks are settling down...
... getting back into their game. Bad breakdown on that last play, though.
Every ockey fan in the country should be watching
this epic battle!!
STOP IT!!!

a shot of adrenalin?

Sharks deserve victory the way they are playing,
especially w/o Milan and after that hit
Bye the by.....
I like Ron Wilsons get up tonight. Great colors!!

this is getting ridiculous!!
Seriosly though guys, no joke....
I dont know how much more I can take! I can barely type my hands are like rattles
each save was for the highlight reel,
and all together in one period, they amount to the most amazing that I have ever seen!
It's been a while since I watched real hockey OT
I forgot how tired the guys get & how sloppy the play gets.
by drink409 on May 4, 2008 9:19 PM PDT up reply actions
Wow we needed that change.....
TY NABBY!
(2:41 OT) Way too many mistakes
They've got to fight through the fatigue and start being smart with the puck.
Looking at the bright side....
if the Sharks can win, this would be a huge steak in the heart of the Stars!
I dont' know what to say...
So very pissed at the Sharks puck handling....Nabby is the f'n man
by drink409 on May 4, 2008 9:22 PM PDT reply actions
That was the most amazing goaltending that I have
ever seen in my life on both sides of the ice!! OMG seriously!! I have nebver seen better!! That was like Arturs Irbe vs. Partick Roy!! Holy Smokes!!
Absolutely
On Nabby's first act of grand larceny, I think that puck was about 2 inches away from crossing the goal line.
Then later in the period, Turco says touche on a double pad stack robbery on Marleau.
Now, everybody catch their breath.
by Gravypan on May 4, 2008 9:25 PM PDT up reply actions
(End OT) How many times...
... can the Sharks tempt fate? Nabokov has made incredible save after incredible save. This can't keep happening. The Sharks need to find the resolve and will to win. They have to stop making stupid mistakes. Yes, they're exhausted. But so is Dallas, yet they're making plays. The Sharks aren't making enough of them. They need to regroup and refocus. If not, this series will be over.
167 comments!! This thread is epic!!
If the Sharks win, print this sheet and save it... Its fun to look back and see the hilarity of it all
Brian Campbel has played 35 minutes on the ice...
and the Sharks are w/o Milan, the Sharks need to try and end this soon, unless Milan can make a miracle comeback
Well I see that 2nd OT is starting...
where the 1st left off

Here we go baby....
Stay Classy Nabby!!
This is just amazing and ridiculous......
this whole thing......WOW WOW WOW
(14:35 2OT) Not to commend the job...
... they're doing, but you almost have to feel for the refs in a game like this. They never get a chance to rest.
screw um...
too many bad calls this series
his has now become the longest game
in the playoffs this season
(12:41 2OT) I'm thinking the team...
... that wins this game will be the one that makes the next to last mistake.
Big Faceoff after the iceing!!
(9:31 2OT) For some strange reason...
... the tempo of play has slowed.
That last shift was not a good one by the Sharks. They need to somehow find the energy to keep going.
THIS FACEOFF IS HUGE!!!
They got lucky with time to rest, now they have to win the faceoff!!
Recover Sharks!!!
Find that 16th wind!! ROFL
More so...
Finally the Stars look tired...Could be good for the Sharks

Good Pressure!!
Keep it up
(8:10 2OT) A lot of people in Dallas...
... are going to be late to work tomorrow. And hopefully very grumpy once they finally get there.
OMG SOUPY HAS 50 SHIFTS
NABBY!!!! AGAIN I LOVE YOU!!!
AND AGAIN LOVE YOU!!!
Stars getting too much pressure
(4:03 2OT) I'd nervously drum my fingers...
... but I think they've become permanently attached to the keyboard of my laptop.
4.6 seconds and you ice the puck?
come on!
SH*T!!!
I think the last 3OT playoff game I saw was Avs/Panthers in what, 96?

I remember watching that one...
... Bill Clement had a classic line just before the third overtime started: "For those of you just joining us -- where the hell have you been?!!"
by Diecast Dude on May 4, 2008 10:12 PM PDT up reply actions
yeah
it's a shame hockey isn't more popular...that game & this game are classics & everyone should have the pleasure of seeing them..
I mean would you rather be entertained spending $15 for a 2 hour movie that ends up sucking or watch 5 hours of hockey that keeps you 'hovering' above your seat in anticipation.
by drink409 on May 4, 2008 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions
One of the main reasons I miss the NHL on ESPN...
... is no longer having Gary Thorne and Bill Clement call the games. They were a terrific team.
I also miss the late Tom Mees. Got his autograph once when he was doing a game at the Tank. Never thought it'd turn into such a melancholy souvenir.

(End 2OT) Who'll give first?
Sooner or later someone is going to make a play. Or a horrific mistake the other team will take advantage of. Maybe both.
If the Sharks win this game they win the series..
I mean, how could Dallas come back from consecutive OT losses not to mention a triple OT loss?
Please Lord!! Bless us with a victory!!
Goalies are very tired.......
My bet is Nabby is the tougher man!! Vesna Baby!!
Almost an extra full game played....
and not one whistle in any OT period!
FINALLY The refs come alive...
I've been waiting...

JUST AS I SAID IT WE GET A PP!!!
WIN THIS GAME BABY!!!
WHAT A CHANCE!!!

(14:58 3OT) Wasted opportunity
Nothing on that PP. Granted they're exhausted, but it would have been nice to have at least gotten a chance out of it.
You know the Refs are gonna want to even it up!
I give it two minutes before the fantom penalty is called
Wow! Nabby again!! 43 saves!
Great Shift Joe!! And Patty!!
This is now in my top 3 Shark games of all time!!
Please be a win!!

... something happen. Dallas has had the better of it in this period.
Check That Please!!

OMG This has to end sometime right?
What are the longest games ever in the playoffs? Anybody know?
cant think about them right now.....
we'll deal with it when we get there
Detroits sleeping nicely tonight

I have had to take a piss for like 15 minutes....
but Im afraid I'll miss something
(2:08 3OT) If the Sharks win this game...
... they will have accomplished the hitherto thought impossible:
Make a Game Seven seem anticlimatic.
Stars are using oxygen!!
its gives you big ups, but it makes the downs even worse. Hopefully the Sharks can take advantage at the right time. If they can sustain a long cycle, Dallas will pay for using oxygen
(End 3OT) What was I saying a few hours ago...
... about a Game Eight?
It's now what the Sharks are shooting for.
Wow!! 4th OT!! This has to be getting historical
as far as length of time!!
HEY WE ARE PLAYING GAME 8 RIGHT NOW!!
I feel like it's a NFL Sunday right now...
...And I've watched the first two games and I'm getting ready for that Sunday Night Game.

he struggles to clear sometimes but 1-on-1 he is really good
(16:34 4OT) No matter how this comes out...
... it will be impossible to praise Nabokov enough for the job he's done tonight. Turco too.

Game over, Series Over, Season Over
We've known that feeling a number of times...
...these past few years, Dude.
Still, major props go your team's way for pushing the Stars to the limit to finally end this series. From you guy's standpoint, I'm sure you're all wonder what took them so long to engage in this series.
I don't know how much gas the Stars wil have left in the tank against Detroit, but it can't be very much.
At any rate, it's just past three where I'm at (yeah, I went to bed around 1:00 CDT and deserve all the ribbing for not being a trooper, etc.) so I'll just close with this was a fantastic and nerve racking series and I enjoyed reading your blog and interacting in a few of the gameday threads.
Sharks and their fans have nothing to hang their heads over in this one.
