Um... Huh?

From NHL.com:

The Buffalo Sabres acquired veteran defenseman Craig Rivet from the San Jose Sharks on Friday.

The Sharks sent the 33-year-old veteran and a seventh-round selection in the 2010 Entry Draft to the Sabres in exchange for second-round selections in the 2009 and 2010 Drafts.

I'm not understanding this one, but I'll hold off until Doug Wilson explains the deal.

that would leave...

boyle, blake, ehrhoff, murray, mclaren, and vlasic. i can live with that – seems like this is mainly to get some picks back and not to save money like doug said. afterall, rivet only has one year left on his contract, correct? so if it is in fact a so called “cap saving move” as doug said, then he’s not done re-tooling the roster.

so...

this is purely speculation, mind you. if this move is to free cash for added depth up front, i’m all for it.

It's all about cap space.

Blake and Boyle added nearly 12 million to our cap, when we only had about 10 million of cap space. Clowe and Ehrhoff still need to be signed, and we still need to add some spare parts. I would have preferred that McLaren be traded, but I am not sure he made enough (only 2.5), or that he actually has any trade value. It seems like they traded one year of Blake at 5 million for 3 years of Craig at 3.5 and a couple of picks. I, for one, am not convinced that Blake is better than Rivet at this point in his career, but our D should be pretty solid this year at least.

Understandable from the cap aspect, lamentable from the personnel aspect...

... but such is life under the salary cap.

It’s going to be interesting to see what, if any, moves will be made up front. I doubt the organization is content with its current assortment of wingers and centers.

great link

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/cap-central/team.php?team=SJ – so about 5.2 million under right now, given that ehrhoff and goc are not yet signed RFAs. id think there should be something left to get at least a role player or two up front to round out the lines. havent looked much into yet, so no idea who.

It's...

kind of a bummer. I always liked cheering for Rivet. I understand it, but I’m not very happy about it.
