Cut it any way you like, but DW's latest move is purely a move to make teams fear the San Jose Sharks. Hell, I'm sort of afraid to root for them right now.
Weather or not you saw Claude's call up coming (I didn't), think he's going to stick around (questionable considering JR, Mitchell, Staubitz etc. will be returning after the break), or think he has what it takes to survive in the NHL after being out of the league for five years, the man who was once labeled "The most hated man in hockey" is here for psychological purposes.
I mean, shit, take a look at this.
To put it lightly, Doug Wilson has put the league on notice that no matter the murky past of a player, he is welcome in San Jose if he gives the team an opportunity to win. So with bated breath we will sit down tonight and observe a fourth line of Shelley, Plihal and Lemieux grind in the corners tonight, and attempt to cause a little ruckus raise some hell. Talent-wise, his inclusion into the roster probably will bring little change if any. But mentally, it's a volatile card DW has played.
Weather or not Lemieux will be effective remains to be seen, but damn it will be some good theater.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-1. Goals by Patty, Big Joe, and Vlasic.
Go Sharks.

I'll be there!
I missed the Detroit game, so this is my “hottest ticket of the season” game…until JR and TM are back on the ice.
Will we need an updated SPG roster for tonight? Any chance Claude is good for a first S, P, or G in any period? I really don’t know what to expect from him tonight.
I would say picking him for S would be like throwing Shelley down- he’s playing the fourth line and will probably get around 6 minutes tonight against a Vancouver team that isn’t extremely physical.
G is also doubtful. I would say P is your best bet with him, but there’s better bets out there across the team.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
If Lemieux is put on the 4th line, as all indications I’ve read point to, I think you’re going to be disappointed if you’re expecting much out of him in terms of scoring.
He’ll skate hard, agitate, hustle, and be smart., but his regular season game is miles away from sexy. Once the playoffs start, however…
If Granato and/or Giguere really think that this is "up-tempo," I feel bad for their wives.

No Way!
My favorite player of all time is back. I love the Sharks and tonight I start learning who else is on the team, lol.

Haha, excellent quote by the way. Glad to have you on board the Sharks gravy train- the second round is where we’re going to need your favorite player of all time.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Thanks. I have to thank the Avalanche for being so mediocre and boring this year that I don’t feel much conflict of interest.
I’m sure those sissified Red Wings will hide until the Conference Finals… or maybe even lose a series on purpose before then to avoid having to play against Lemieux.

I think if Monsieur Lemieux can demonstrate a modicum of health at his prime age, then he might just be the missing link. The Sharks aren’t particularly nasty. Yes they have players that can get nasty (Grier, Murray, Shelley. And even to a certain extent Clowe), but it feels like most of those guys concentrate on their roles and bark back once they are provoked.
Playing against a team like Calgary, who I would probably say are the most physical team we have played this year, Lemieux is going to be invaluable. His agitation skills would be muched valued when teams such as Calgary try and manhandle the sharks.
I definitely agree, but the only thing is if he can stay away from being a liability on the ice. An agitator is only effective if he can produce by being a solid defensive player (something he has done very well during his career). That’s the key here- the Sharks don’t need any firepower in the offensive end of the ice. If things pan out like they have in the past for DW’s trend of breathing fresh life into some seemingly “over the hill vets” (Blake, Roenick) I think we’ll be sitting pretty if we run up against Calgary in May.
All in all the jury’s still out, but this is a perfect time to see what he can do. Like Doug Wilson says, "(it is) a no-lose, no-risk scenario."
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
I totally agree
on all points. Plus, I still feel that the majority of the time (last game vs the Wings notwithstanding) we are not as physical a team as we can/should be. When we are (see above referenced game) we are a MUCH better team. That’s what I’m hoping Lemieux brings to the table.

I agree. We dont need to take silly trips to the penalty box, but we do need to make sure we rearrange Andre Roy’s face.

As soon as I found out that Claude was coming
I bought one of the remaining singles left on Ticketmaster. I hadn’t planned on this game, but with Lemieux on one end and Luongo and Sundin on the other, should be one heck of a night.
As far as a game wrap – I’ll be taking notes, but this week is INSANE for me. Case in point – I got back to San Jose from NEW ORLEANS this morning at 2am, and have been teaching since 7:30am. Yay me… Report cards also due on Friday, joy…
Fear the Fin: Home of the Triple Game Thread
By which I mean to say
The game wrap is dependent upon my ability to stay awake – but Lemieux could make me uber-stimulated. [awaiting vulgar photo from Plank]

You guys gotta get
your travel plans coordinated. I’m pretty sure Plank was tearing up Vegas (good choice, by the way) while you were in NOLA. Some of the rest of us travel challenged were sitting here patiently. SHEESH!

Unfortunately
I still haven’t seen it, since I just got back at 2am this morning, and went to work 5 hours later. No rest for the wicked debauched.
I would have seen highlights during my break(s), but the inauguration took care of my free time. The whole school watched it in the auditorium. Those kids were going nuts – any time they saw Obama, it was whoops and applause!

Hello all...
Hockey hangover from Saturday’s game?
Oh hell no. Here’s hoping the Sharks prove the Red Wings game was no fluke.
Fear the Fin: Where everybody loves me.
Just a hangover
From NOLA – heck of a place.
Gotta run – by popular demand, I’ll try to attack the game wrap tonight (sleep be damned).
Fear the Fin: Home of the Triple Game Thread
BTW...
Here’s what Sportsnet.ca (a great site for hockey peoples) say about Joslin…
"Assets: Is a solid puck-moving defenseman with offensive potential and decent size. Can also quarterback the power play and has a good point shot.
Flaws: Needs more work without the puck and especially in defensive-zone coverage. Doesn’t utilize his 6-1 frame to the utmost.
Potential: “Power play quarterback.”"
Guess NHL 09’s assessment isn’t far off.
Fear the Fin: Where everybody loves me.
What are they saying
about Lemieux?

Nothing up yet. I guess that means he has no assets, no flaws, and his career potential is 0.
Fear the Fin: Where everybody loves me.
by Matthew_Taylor on Jan 20, 2009 3:08 PM PST up reply actions
McGinn, however....
"Assets: Can play a sound two-way game and displays a little scoring upside. Works very hard when on the ice and is also quite versatile up front.
Flaws: Doesn’t have ideal size for the wing position. Must display greater consistency in order to maximize his National Hockey League potential.
Career potential: Top six winger."
