Dear Brian Boucher,

Last year I saw my life flash before my eyes. When Nabby went down against the Islanders after being hit in the face with a puck, I thought the Sharks season was kaput. The road trip was horrible, we were wading in the middle of the pack in regards to the playoff hunt, and I had just learned that dealing with losses by hurtling water balloons filled with urine at random passerby was grounds for arrest.

It was the worst of times.

But then you came around and changed all that. Sure, everyone thinks that Brian Campbell was the reason for the Sharks turnaround last year. But isn't it funny that you showed up on the same day? We didn't have a capable backup until you came along- Thomas Greiss' glove hand was as slippery as grease. Did you like that homophone? I made it just for you.

I was there when you won the division title in Anaheim last year. You looked so good on the ice; challenging shooters when you needed to, but not making the mistake of getting out of position. A perfect blend of brash confidence and humble servitude. This year you've continued where you left off- dealing out shutouts like they were your birthright, putting up numbers that once had you amongst the top of the NHL goaltending leaders. You kick more ass than Samuel L. Jackson- just be sure not to tell him I said that.

I guess the reason I'm writing to you is because I'm no longer concerned about the Sharks goaltending situation. Last year, the season could have been over if Nabokov went down against the Islanders. Now I know that we have a more than capable backup if he ever needs a day of rest.

           Cheers,

                   Jason Plank

ps  I'm thinking you guys win 3-1 tonight while you get all the goals. That would make me really happy. I'm counting on you mister!

Go Sharks.

Not that I know of- it was just my way of tying in the Islanders. I don’t know their team all that much besides the fact that Doug Weight scored his 1000th point last night, Rick DiPietro has a 15 year contract, and they haven’t been very good for awhile now.

Why do you think he will? Get some work in against a team that the Sharks (in theory) should handle?

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Jan 3, 2009 10:44 AM PST up reply actions

Not really sure....

mostly just a feeling I guess. As I said last night, Nabby seems a bit off lately. At least at the start of the games. TM seemed to make a point last time he started Bouch that he wasn’t just going to use him in back to backs. Personally I think we could use a Bouch shutout to ramp things up a bit. Don’t get me wrong. I’m not a Nabby hater…but I am a Bouch fan.

Also…I don’t think Dipietro will start for the Islanders tonite. He looked like crap last night. Macdonald hasn’t been that much better. But that was the gazillion dollar man’s first start in quite a while, and it’s back to back for them. So, I think it’s Mac for them tonite.

Lastly….I really hate that “team we should handle” thing. i.e. St Louis…Minnesota.

You and me both Mr. Valentine. I’d love to see him get the start tonight and more in the future; around 20 total by the time the season wraps up. Rest Nabby and keep Bouch ready in the unfortunate case Nabby can’t get it done towards the end of the year.

Lastly….I really hate that "team we should handle" thing. i.e. St Louis…Minnesota.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It’s been relatively rough lately compared to the beginning of the year- we’re not blowing teams out like we used to do. We’re definitely spoiled, but it’s not like it’s been a one game isolated incident. It’s been a trend with our even strength play for the last ten games or so.

That being said, I think the Islanders are a whole other can of worms. Minnesota needed a big win and was a playoff team last season. The Blues always seem to play us well and do have some good young talent mixed in with some vets who can still produce (Tkachuk comes to mind). It would be a damn shame to drop one at home to these guys, especially with them coming off a long travel from Phoenix last night.

I’m not looking past it. Hopefully our skaters aren’t either.

Agreed, the Islanders are a whole different level of “team you should handle.”

Not that, as a partisan, I think they are quite as awful as their record (Heaven’s no, never! But really, the constant rotating injuries have deleted any margin of error for them). Just that even when the Isles are playing the style Gordon intends to a ‘T’, that style plays right into the hands of the higher-skilled teams. It is a style that is fun to watch but sorely awaits better personnel.

Exactly

I watched last night’s game against the ‘Yotes and I’d dare to say, that given some goaltending of value, (hell, even half the value of monies paid) the Isles would be a far better team.

So, I’m watching the Panthers @ Penguins game (Gamecenter is free today), and holy crap. Its 6-1, Panthers. Apparently, the Pens are on a 4-game home losing streak. An announcer just said, “This is rock bottom.” Its crazy quiet at the Igloo. Oh, and Crosby got 21 PIMs, which is probably one of the reasons why they’re sucking so much.

So, yeah. Compare that slump with our own little “slump.” Makes me feel a whole lot better.

by mymclife on Jan 3, 2009 12:22 PM PST reply actions

Oh

And the Bruins just lost to the Sabres. So if we win tonight, we’ll be up by one point with a game in hand.

by mymclife on Jan 3, 2009 12:26 PM PST up reply actions

With that in mind

I’d say we’re doing a-o.k.

Also – Buffalo finally cracked Boston’s win streak, winning 4-2 @ Boston. AAAHHH – you got it in before I could finish, mymclife.

I = Fail

Also = Boston is going to be a few games ahead of us for awhile. I consulted our mutual schedules, and we’ll have to observe our games in hand when comparing points.

But still = a win tonight would put us back at the top of the NHL by one point, with a game in hand over Boston (us – 38 games, them – 39).

by SwisherThresher on Jan 3, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

Almost

They lost in December at Washington, but that was their ONLY game in December that they didn’t receive 2 points. The loss at Buffalo was the only regulation loss in November (they also lost in OT to the Rangers).

Fear the Fin: Home of the Triple Game Thread

Their October was much shakier

They only had 5 wins in 11 regular season games in October.

The Penguins' goalies (Fleury and Sabourin)

Each let in 3 goals on 12 shots. 75% save percentage for each… ouch. On the other hand, Craig Anderson made 29 saves on 30 shots… pesky Panthers.

Pittsburgh has now dropped to 9th place, as Buffalo’s win brings them in the top 8 just barely. The Panthers are breathing down the Pens’ necks at 10th place, with one game in hand, and just 3 less points.

Fear the Fin: Home of the Triple Game Thread

by Mr. K. on Jan 3, 2009 12:38 PM PST up reply actions

It makes that regulation loss we had to the Panthers earlier in the season feel a little less, “Oh jeez, we lost to the freaking Panthers,” that’s for sure.

And Pittsburgh… I’ve been watching some of their past few games. They’re having a hard time just controlling the puck. And when they do control the puck, they’re trying to make all these pretty passes instead of settling for garbage goals (hey, sound a little familiar?). Both Malkin and Crosby are hitting slumps right now too, which probably doesn’t help any, but its really exposing their weaknesses as a one-line team.

by mymclife on Jan 3, 2009 1:13 PM PST up reply actions

Have Malkin and Crosby been on the same line?

I remember Michel Terrien saying that he preferred when they anchored the first and second lines… no wonder they’re losing if they’re on the same line! Look at the C.A.S.H. line and Ottawa – Ottawa is in the dumps! One line does not a good team make (you can say the same for Columbus and Nash-Umberger-Huselius).

Fear the Fin: Home of the Triple Game Thread

by Mr. K. on Jan 3, 2009 1:16 PM PST up reply actions

For a while, yeah

Their lines haven’t been constant at all this year, but at one point I believe there was a Malkin-Crosby-Satan(??) line. One of the problems that they have is that they don’t have any wingers who are of the “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality like Setoguchi and Cheechoo are for us. Everyone tries to pull off Joe Thornton-esque passes, which tend to result in turnovers.

And Columbus is actually doing better than anyone expected – they’re in a playoff spot right now (largely due to Steve Mason).

by mymclife on Jan 3, 2009 1:30 PM PST up reply actions

Hmmm...

You’re right about Columbus – 6-3-1 in their last ten (not too shabby). I knew Steve Mason was getting shutouts (against Anaheim for one), but I will have to watch this new development.

As for Pittsburgh – that seems like a reasonable assessment (fancy passes = more turnovers). Can’t say I’ve seen too much of Pittsburgh lately (I caught a bit of their game against Buffalo a week ago, but that’s it).

Fear the Fin: Home of the Triple Game Thread

by Mr. K. on Jan 3, 2009 1:34 PM PST up reply actions

I think Mason got something like three shutouts in a row, which is amazing for a rookie goaltender. He’s probably the frontrunner for the Calder right now.

I’ve been watching parts of Pittsburgh’s games recently, partially because I wanted them to win at least one in their home and home against the Bruins. It has just been turnover city. The players just sort of pass into the open, expecting someone to be there, and more often than not its the other team. I’m not seeing a lot of chemistry between the players either.

by mymclife on Jan 3, 2009 1:45 PM PST up reply actions

Their power play has been a huge problem too, I think they’re something like 0 for their last 20.

Aw, crap

Its official: tonight, Semenov is playing as a forward (Jody Shelley is day-to-day with upper body soreness).

Joslin is in, because Murray is day-to-day with a lower-body injury.

Line combos from practice:
Marleau-Thornton-Setoguchi
Michalek-Pavelski-Clowe
Grier-Goc-Cheechoo
Semenov-Cavanagh-Plihal

H/T to DP at WTC.

That is one good thing about Semenov as a fourth line forward. The fourth line, barring a huge lead, gets about 5 minutes a game. The third defensive pairing gets, at the very least, 15 minutes per game.

Semenov’s played as a forward already this season- anybody remember which game?

McGinn was sent down because he has a two way contract. We can’t afford to scratch Semenov (with limited roster space, ie waiting for Mitchell and Roenick to return), so hence the “experiment”. He’s going to see like 5 minutes of ice time anyways…..

I like the way you think about the ice time…and at least this way Semenov isn’t SUPPOSED to be in front of our net..

So, let’s look upon the positives here. (Since it appears no one really cares what we think in relation to setting the lineup)
His size is an adequate replacement for Murray’s hitting ability.
In theory, he won’t be trying to block shots on our net.
      Um….
His size is an adequate….Oh…yeah. Well, there is the thing about him being further
      from our net.

The teams that give the Sharks problems tend to have a good defense, great goaltending, and just grind it out. The Islanders have none of those. They have the worst goal differential in the league (-39), bad goaltending, and only two players with a positive +/-. Doesn’t seem like a team that really grinds out their victories.

Not a bad move! I say post him in front of the net and have him screening shots! He makes a better door than a window!

and how much fun would it be to shoot directly at Semenov!

Also, in terms of all star balloting, as of yesterday Semenov had received more votes (102) than the following Sharks:

Plihal (90 Something)
McGinn
Cavanagh
Kaspar

It’s purely academic because I think the only player in the group (Semenov included!) to play the requisite 20+ games is Plihal.

We kinda mellowed out in the second, relaxing a little bit. But that amazing goal they got sparked new life in the Sharks luckily. Even the play after that was more high tempo and smooth. Really good chances by both teams, both both goalies are looking sharp. But NABBY with that last stick save.

Sick. I just picked up WWE Smackdown vs Raw 2009 for 360 and was amazed to see all the new faces. I was a huge fan during the Stone Cold/Rock/Mankind days. The Attitude era was badass.

What’s the deal with Kane not having a mask? That’s probably a good reason not to watch anymore, although I do tune in from time to time. I’ve always liked the Hardys, and he’s been getting some good time as a face lately. Jericho has always had my heart as well. Perfect heel.

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Jan 3, 2009 11:14 PM PST up reply actions

WWE

I think the state of the WWE has been declining every year since about 2002. Jericho isn’t even as good as he used to be. The WWE doesn’t establish new stars and they just recycle old storylines. It’s just not what it used to be in the back in the day when there were legitimate tag teams, the Intercontinental Championship meant something, and the women could wrestle.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jan 3, 2009 11:22 PM PST up reply actions

Yeah, I loved The New Age Outlaws, The Dudleyz, Hardys etc.

I remember the Dudleys and Hardys would have the most epic table matches. Some real solid performances. In your opinion (if you even care enough to expound), what brought it down? I haven’t seen enough lately to know…..

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Jan 3, 2009 11:25 PM PST up reply actions

WWE

After Vince McMahon purchased WCW, he created two brands: Raw and SmackDown. Later on, ECW was added to make three. There weren’t enough new stars created. When everything was happening in about 1997 to 2001, it was all fresh and new. Fresh and new things aren’t developing. It’s all recycled. A lot of people are sad to see the young stars get pushed aside for superstars that are just old now. A lot of young, new blood isn’t getting pushed. Edge won his first World Championship in 2006 and since then, from what I recall, only one superstar has won the World Championship belt for the first time in his career. It’s just the same things over and over and over again.

The Ultimate Opportunist

by Rated-R Superstar on Jan 3, 2009 11:30 PM PST up reply actions

Bah, thats no good. This one dude in the game named Kofi Kingston is super sweet though.

And wtf was up with that Undertaker storyline? I played Road To Wrestlemania, and that mode allows you to follow the exact storyline of the specific superstar. He was fueding with two jobbers (Santiago and some Irish dude I believe), then some witch doctor dude started controlling them etc. I thought it was pretty much filth.

The Game has always had my heart though. I really like how they developed that character- willing to sacrifice anything and side with anyone to get to the top.

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Jan 3, 2009 11:42 PM PST up reply actions

WWE

Yeah, character development was much more thorough back in the day. John Cena’s character has developed, most men hate the guy. Although, Cena’s merchandise sales were amazing in 2008, behind single year marks set by only Hogan and Austin. Undertaker’s storyline was pretty stupid in the game. I was bitter about Edge not having one. I haven’t played the game in a while. I have it for PS3. But yeah, character development isn’t as thorough as it was in the WWE. Kofi Kingston is really athletic and fun to watch, but he’ll never amount to anything legitimate. Shelton Benjamin and CM Punk are some more young guys that are exciting. CM Punk briefly had the World Heavyweight Championship, but I doubt he’ll ever get pushed to the top again.

by KindaFantastic on Jan 3, 2009 10:43 PM PST up reply actions

Not that they didn't deserve it

They just stopped trying after they were up 3-0/4-1. The fact that it took three guys to get a puck into an empty net is worrisome. Especially against the Islanders.

The first period showed that the Sharks still know how to be that October/November team – the second and third periods showed that they would rather take the easy way out. I’d be pissed if I was McLellan as well.

The wave is the low point at the Shark Tank, followed very closely by Sharkie himself. I’ve been there multiple times when some fan sitting around me will go bonkers and start yelling at Sharkie while we’re trying to kill a penalty, in a tight game etc.

Lame.

They usually do.

Just got home (long drive)

and was gonna comment on the stupidity of the wave at a friggin hockey game!

Why bother telling everyone to sit down when the puck is on the ice, then tell everyone to stand up in unison? HATE IT!

At least

there were quite a few people where I sit yelling at the morons doing it to sit down.

I'm sorry (not really)

But that was freaking amazing. I fell out of my seat the first time I saw it (and I think I’ve seen it… 14 times so far?) Today was just a strange fighting day all around: Semin turned bitchy lady, Semenov manhandling people, and Erhoff with a temper!
If only there wasn’t a glove of doom that seems to bite us in the butt a lot.

Or Crosby

He dropped the gloves today too. Completely blindsided a guy off a faceoff and sort of tackled him. It was a little sad. Got him 21 minutes too.

by mymclife on Jan 3, 2009 11:16 PM PST up reply actions

After the game he said the guy wanted to go, but it sure as hell didn’t look like it. Pulled his jersey over his head right off the faceoff and started pounding on him.

A talented guy for sure, but he’s been doing some shady stuff this year. Anybody else see that punch to the groin he delivered a little while back?

True, but when he was drafted the league needed to market a young star because they were coming right out of the lockout. Sort of forced their hand prematurely.

Now though, I definitely think the general NHL fan realizes that he’s in the top twenty of players, but guys like Ovy, Malkin, Zetterberg, Datsyuk, Thornton, Kovalchuk, Iginla (just to name a few) are just as good if not superior.

some of the goals he scores are just sick,

he had a good goal tonight. And the deke datsyuk put on in the shootout was incredible.

by mattman on Jan 3, 2009 11:47 PM PST up reply actions

I think that definitely applies to how the league handles his situations, but I’m talking more about his actions/comments to the press. The “face” of the NHL definitely has a lot to do with it (possibly getting to his head, making him feel superior, above the law etc.), but he seems sort of smug almost, like he knows he can’t be touched so he exploits it.
