[Editor's Note]: Joe Sakic, who will be honored at The Pepsi Center tonight before the opening faceoff, deserves to start us off today. A surefire Hall of Famer and a world class human being, Burnaby Joe will be sorely missed from the sport of hockey. It's a damn shame to see him go.

Some of you will wake up today and tap a Sharks jersey hanging on the wall before work, a yearly tradition that signals the sweet demise of summer prognostications and predictions. A few will rub sleepy eyelashes over morning breakfast and wonder what sort of profit margins you would see by selling Pavelski Puffs cereal. Others will sit down on the couch and cycle through General Hospital episodes, eventually coming to the conclusion that it may be better to just head back to bed and play Minesweeper on your laptop until six thirty. One will throw on an Andrew W.K. album and indulge in a session of autoerotic asphyxia- another will walk in on said person and end up missing the game due to an impromptu counseling appointment.

Whatever you do today, cherish it. Because it's a goddamn roller coaster ride from here on out.

Star-divide

We had your season preview two days ago. David Pollak passed the news along yesterday that Rob Blake will hold the Captaincy this season, with Dan Boyle and Joe Thornton fulfilling the assistant roles. The rosters have been filled, with pre-training camp longshot Jason Demers managing to work his way into a starting spot tonight in Colorado.  So what's left?

That whole meaningful hockey thing. The one you've been casting lustful stares at all summer in the hope that she would finally let you buy her a drink. Turns out that drink she's letting you buy tonight is about to develop into a long term relationship. You're ready to settle down after five months of stumbling around like the hopeless romantic you are, tired of stewing over that last bad break up and broken heart. Maybe, hopefully, she'll want to have kids- her friends tell you she's quite partial to the name Stanley.

But don't rush into things just yet. It's time to take it slow, get to know the ins and outs, all the little things that will shed some light on where this eventually ends up. Enjoy it now, because you didn't appreciate it enough last time through. No, you kept looking forward and wondering how things would turn out after only knowing her for a week. Sure you were appreciate in spurts, but there was always that voice inside your head saying, "Wait for the payoff. This means nothing unless it goes somewhere serious."

Bullshit. This time the highs are going to be higher than a Brad Delp falsetto and the lows are going to be lower than a mirror at Jordin Tootoo's house. This time each day is going to bring a palette of colors that will paint my moods. This time I'm going to enjoy the ride.

Kick the tires and light the fires big daddy. Let's get the damn thing underway.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by Pavelski, Marleau, McGinn, and Clowe. My roomate misses the game due to an impromptu counseling appointment.

Go Sharks.

Avalanche – 27, Sharks – 24. Sakic re-signs with the Avs moments before the puck drops, scores 7 goals in final 12 seconds on weak coverage by Mark Roman.

I been counting days since the fateful Game 6 against Ahaheim and what seemed like an enernity (157 days!) now has finally come to an end, although the next 7 hours are going to be the longest of it all.

Sharks win 3-1, with two PP goals by Heater that will be the foreshadowing of things to come.

by Ivano M on Oct 1, 2009 9:11 AM PDT reply actions

I hope Heatley scores a goal, but I wouldn’t expect him to. He’s only scored a goal (once two) in two of seven career season openers. He does have nine points in those seven games, though, and has scored a goal in the last two.

Thanks guys...

…for the warm welcome. Seemed to me that the first day of the season is as good a reason as any to finally get involved here.

I got into hockey because my girlfriend is from the Bay Area, but now living here in the UK. On holiday in April 2008 I found myself in San Jose watching the Flames series with her friends and I just found myself really getting into the game.

Started watching games here on TV last season, and by the time the series with the Ducks came around I found myself getting up in the middle of the night, pulling on the Teal, and experiencing the horror of a first round exit for the first time.

That’s it really, and now I’m hooked. But then I wouldn’t have it any other way.

YESSSS!!!

I’ve been waiting for this day since forever, it feels like. I’m so happy and excited all rolled up into one. Seeing all the guys skate in a game that actually means something, with Nabokov making those aerobatic saves of his, Marleau using his speed, Thornton making those “how the hell did he do that?” passes, Murray’s huge “like wall” (if I may steal Irbe’s nickname) hits, and Boyle’s artistry with the puck.

Except I have French from 6-8pm, guaranteeing that I’ll miss at least the first period. Yet another reason why I hate the French language. But that’s what a cell phone is for, I guess.

Oh, and I’m so repping the Sharks today. My new teal-colored shoes, one of four Sharks shirts, and my Sharks lanyard that my mom sent in a care package.

Well my father

was a season ticket holder for the 9er’s since the late 70’s, and I’ve gone to exactly 145 Niners games in seats that are now $120 a pop (screw the yorks), so I am always a football fan first, ON SUNDAYS. That’s what I love about Hockey, no time conflicts at all. Even if there were, I have the means to watch both games at once! In fact, today, I hope a Sharks win gets me over my FUCK BRETT FAVRE mood that’s been haunting me since Sunday.

Also, considering as how you were a police officer in Oakland, I take it you have dealt with more than your fair share of criminal Raiders fans? I can see how anyone would hate football after dealing with those cretins!

The intro about Joe Sakic was classy..

But it’s “Burnaby Joe”, because he is from Burnaby, British Columbia. Barnaby Joe sounds like a 1970s detective show starring Jed Clampett.

Which I’m sure was still pretty awesome because it’s Jed Clampett as a detective, I’m just saying.

McGinn – Malhotra – Ferriero
Shelley – Nichol – Ortmeyer

Boyle – Murray

Huskins – Demers

did you guys know that tipping used to be frowned upon, and was thought of as un-american!?

by a10dency2ask on Oct 1, 2009 2:11 PM PDT reply actions

In Hong Kong

it is thought of as an insult to the business you are frequenting! Considering as how I work at a restaurant, I’m glad tipping is a practice in full force! (I have coworkers who can’t pay their rent because our business is low, hence, few tips.)

Niners: (SCREW BRETT FAVRE)...Sharks Hockey: TONIGHT!...TIMES ARE GOOD!

I know some bartenders who hate when foreigners come to their restaurants for this very reason.

by Evilducks on Oct 1, 2009 2:23 PM PDT up reply actions

When I was a waitress in Miami, the 15% tip was added as a line item on the bill (with a note saying they could add/subtract as they saw fit) since there were so many tourists there from Europe/South America.

by AfroPuff on Oct 1, 2009 4:31 PM PDT up reply actions

In Costa Rica

there is a 10% service tax (essentially a tip) on all food and beverage items, from McDonald’s to your local bar to the finest 5 star restaurants. Add the steep 13% federal tax (we don’t have states) and you’re looking at 23% after tax and tip, but it’s always automatically built into the price, so as far as a practice tipping doesn’t exist, the system does it for you.

Sometimes foreigners forget that only tax, and not tip, is built in to the prices when they first come to the US. I know it took me a couple weeks before I got the hang of it when I first moved here.

Yes, I'm from the tropics. Yes, I love hockey. What's not to get?

by workthecycle on Oct 1, 2009 2:50 PM PDT up reply actions

interesting stories all

the reason it was thought of as un-american is people found it to perpetuate the master-servant relationship. They felt giving someone a tip forced them to admit their inferiority to you. Apparently there were anti tipping coalitions and people who felt it would ruin the country even well into the 20th century

Another reason I know hockey season is here

Listening to KHTK here in Sacramento, RED WINGS fans are calling in by droves and saying how their franchise is superior to every other in America. When I try to call in and give some love for the Sharks, the program director laughs and hangs up on me. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

They’re everywhere! And KHTK is all about the Kings (NBA) so they don’t take a lot of hockey calls. What pisses me off is that program directors there don’t take my Sharks calls and then the hosts complain about how there are no hockey fans out there.

That's too bad

I wonder if a minor league team would prove successful in Sacramento. I know it’s been discussed on a few occasions (along with the dormant “Reno Raiders”). It will be the 5th anniversary of the Stockton Thunder and they’ve led the ECHL in attendance for the majority of that time (avg. close to 7000/gm, which would also place them within the upper echelon of AHL club #s).

Who would have thought Stockton would prove to be a hockey hotbed. In Sacramento, it may be a case of “If you build it…”

I'm not sure if it's funny or sad...

People who live in the Bay Area and are die hard fans of teams that miss the playoffs more often than not (Kings, Raiders, A’s, Giants, etc.) and yet won’t give hockey a second look when they have a perennial cup contender in their back yards. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not hating on any of the other bay area teams, and it’s great that fans are passionate about their team win or lose, but if I lived in Pittsburg, why would I only cheer for the Pirates when I could also support the champion Steelers and Penguins?

Most comments on this site outside of hockey can be construed as political

It’s the reader’s interpretation that determines how political a simple statement of fact is or isn’t. My comment can also be viewed as a harmless joke, a fact, an economics statistic, or a math problem. Now, the use of the word “government” does imply a political dimension to the sentence, so maybe “we” would have been a better substitute. My apologies.

If I understand this correctly

Versus is raising what DirecTV pays them by 20%, after DirecTV already pays them more than any other channel of their distribution. Versus also doesn’t get enough viewership (wonder why we call it Versucks?) to justify the hike in the (corporate) eyes of DirecTV.

Objectively, I’m with DirecTV on this one… even if it screws me over because I have DirecTV.

I only got DirecTV because I hated Comcast. Why don’t they understand that people want OTHER options? Fuckers. I have to watch this streaming video tonight on my computer instead of my 50" HD.

but I do wonder why directv has an issue and not the other cable companies … meaning, san bruno cable had to renegotiate with them as well … and indicated there was a price hike, but they were able to settle with them … san bruno cable is a much much smaller company than directv … yet were able to do this without causing us any issues

so not only can I watch the sharks game, but I can watch it on two channels

just seems there is more than meets the eye with directv

they are doing the logical thing here so it seems

don’t think we will be ringing this same tune though come playoff time if something isn’t resolved. Also, a side not, but I’m a fight fan and versus also carries the WEC.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Oct 1, 2009 6:31 PM PDT up reply actions

Versus also doesn’t get enough viewership (wonder why we call it Versucks?) to justify the hike in the (corporate) eyes of DirecTV.

I call it Versucks because their announcers blow and they don’t have nearly enough coverage to be the flagship station of the NHL in the United States.

Their viewership is probably a result of that though, so you have a point.
