Woooooooo how about that Duchene kid eh?

......anybody?

[Editor's Note]: No in-depth recap tonight, but it's obvious that the blueline needs some work. My season preview labeled it a weakness on the team, and it's readily apparent there are going to be some growing pains. Really nothing new there. The boys stunk it up in the defensive zone tonight.

Offensively the team looked fine besides not being able to capitalize on some scoring chances. Leave the hate in the comments, because I'm sure there is going to be a lot of it.

Go Sharks.

The best was the Flames/Hawks series last season.

When someone in the Versucks trailer thought it’d be a good idea to get a feed off Iggy when he was chawing with a couple of Hawks. “I don’t give a shit! I don’t give a shit, motherf…” Sadly they figured that one out in a hurry.

I know, and the fact that they have more wins than Timmy does give them an edge. But I think having a hitter like Pujols – an MVP candidate – should hurt their chances. I mean, the Giants have no offense. None. Timmy basically has to go into every game with the mindset that he’ll only get one or two runs, and if he gives up one or two they lose.

Meh. I don’t know if I really buy into that. If they can’t get up for the season opener then it’s obviously not a Cup contending team.

Some bad breaks and some absolutely atrocious defensive play led to the loss tonight. There’s really not much more to say than that.

Pissed Off

Yes, I know it’s the first game of the season and it’s on the road, but all the signs of last spring’s playoff failures were on display. In fact, I’m so pissed off that I signed up and posted for the first time. :)

I think most of the west has figured out how to shut down Thornton’s game, which relies heavily on precision passing down low. Colorado crammed the slot and took away the cross crease pass. Most of the time, Joe either got shoved off the puck by Foote or threw it back to the blue line, where most of the offense predictably comes from. Look at the 5 on 3 sequence where Blake lined up 3 slap shots in a row and all of them were gloved for a faceoff.

Heatley looks tentative. He’s not normally accustomed to going so long without a goal (counting preseason) and looked distracted. Pucks bounced everywhere and he just wasn’t letting the game come to him. When he had that awesome chance to stuff in an empty net, he whiffed. That to me is a lack of concentration.

The same can be said about the rest of the play in the offensive zone. Medium passes are never smooth. I remember a sequence (on PP?) where Thornton/Clowe threw cross ice passes to Boyle and twice it hopped over his stick and he had to retrieve off the boards. Contrast this with the Boston game earlier. Even though the Bs lost, I never saw them once miss a short to medium length pass. It was bam bam on the tape each time.

Defensively, the whole team was awful. Huskins makes me long for Semenov back. The two Wolski goals came because the defenseman started following the puck instead of taking the man. That leaves the weak side totally open for Wolski to stuff the puck in the same way Heatley missed. The team also showed a tendency to follow the puck around instead of being in good position for a breakout pass.

Nabby was suspect throughout. A lot of rebounds leading directly to goals. He also had a good view on the slapper by Liles. I didn’t keep track, but he probably gloved less than 1/3 the shots fired at him.

Welcome

I can’t really disagree with your analysis on any of the points, but I want to add two things

1. Offensively, the Sharks didn’t capitalize on opportunities. Maybe it was because Colorado jammed up in front of the net, but that usually, eventually leads to a garbage goal like the Avs’ second goal. They were able to take advantage of all their best scoring opportunities.

2. I actually enjoyed watching the Patrick Marleau Show. Opponents figured out how to shut down the top line last year, and we saw more of that tonight. However, it’s one of the reasons I was so excited to bring in Heatley AND keep Marleau. Putting him on the 2nd line lets the Sharks roll with two dangerous lines that may not both click on the same nights. It felt like Jumbo and Heater were getting double teamed when they were out there, so Joe needs to adjust his game, but you could see Pavelski and Marleau were on the same wavelength and wow…

Just got back

And rewatched the whole game on DVR.

A few things I noticed:
The bad:

Murray, as much as I like him, really had a horrible game. He was getting beat to the puck on many occasions, and getting caught out of position. On at least 2 or 3 of the goals the open man where the rebound went to was someone that Murray should have covered. Goal 3 was just Murray getting flat out beat. I think Todd realized this, and I noticed that Murray’s TOI was significantly down during the third period.

Nabby’s rebound control sucked this game. He saves a lot of crazy shots, but can’t control the second opportunities.

Heatley could have made a slight difference on the third goal if he moved his feet. It’s kinda tough to see him coast by, starting from the center line and not covering McLeod.

Vlasic was channeling Ehrhoff a little bit. A few shots wide, a few on the glass.

Huskins I don’t think can play defense at all. Bad passes out of the zone (bouncing puck), unnecessary icing, etc. I also believe we can expect one bad turnover from Huskins a game. Can we survive it?

Now the good:

The second line is potent. It’s deadly. Pavs, Clowe, Marleau – they all played so well together and always seemed to have a chance when they were on the ice.

Ferriero’s unbelievably accurate. I don’t think any of his shots went wide, even from odd angles. He always happened to put it on the net, and would have had one if it weren’t for I think Quincey’s big head.

Blake played decently today. Decent shots from the point, a lot were getting through, though just Anderson really gobbled up a lot of the shots due to lack of traffic, and lack of rebounds.

A lot of chances, just not a lot of them in net.
It’s only one game, the first of 82. We’ll see all of them click soon enough.
