After just one game, Jamie McGinn has surprisingly been re-assigned to Worcester, while Frazer McLaren has been recalled and is expected to make his NHL debut Saturday against Anaheim.

That really, really confuses me. I mean, I didn’t really noticed McGinn during the first game or anything, but he was definitely one of the standouts during pre-season.

Okay, but now that I think about it, it is a game against the Ducks. Maybe DW and McLellan are anticipating some extra-curricular activities from the 6-0 beatdown from the preseason and any remaining feelings from the playoffs. Won’t hurt to have a physical presence like McLaren patrolling the ice. Also? He goes to the net and screens the goalie. We needed that against the Avs.

I don’t think there’s much need to have two enforcers patrolling the ice- the team isn’t going to be utilizing that down the stretch run, so why do it now?

If I’m DW I do this for Anaheim:

-Send down Staubitz
-Scratch Shelley
-Bring up McLaren

You don’t lose your neanderthal goon, and now you have a guy who’s going to go to the net. McGinn can play the PK, provides some scoring pop, and can actually skate- he’s a perfect fit on Malhotra’s wing.

ugh I hope that isn’t so. I’m so sick of the Sharks bending over backwards to adjust to other teams. Play your way and don’t be fearful of the other teams! Let’s beat anaheim at our game not theirs

Whoah whoah whoah- seriously? I don’t like this move at all.

Maybe it’s a short term thing like mymclife said, and I understand they’re trying to get a lot of guys in (which I agree with), but McGinn is definitely a presence out there on the ice and should be on the roster for the majority of the year.

I don’t like this at all, send Staubitz down, why on gods green earth would we need all 3 of these guys up at one time?

by Evilducks on Oct 2, 2009 3:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Staubitz would have to clear Waivers

Wouldnt he?

Yeah, another site mentioned that he would – I’m not sure, but I think it’s because of his age (25) because he definitely hasn’t played enough games and I honestly don’t remember what type of contract he has.

I had no idea Staubitz was 25- so much for hanging on to the idea that he’s still a “prospect” apparently.

But yes, your information is correct. If a player is 25+ he’d have to clear waivers.

Think anybody would actually claim him off waivers?

by Evilducks on Oct 2, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, especially at this point in the season. Re-entry waivers are weird in that situation though. I’m not sure what his AHL salary is- if it’s over 100 K or something around there then he’s subject to be picked up by another team, and San Jose would be on the hook to pay half his salary.

Fact check says it’s $105,000 this season. It was 100 K last year.

Anyone know a place to find Staubitz’s AHL salary?

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Oct 2, 2009 5:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Found it on CapGeek- it is less than 105 K. Here is his player profile page.

Essentially what this means is that Staubitz would only have to clear waivers down to the AHL, and would not be subject to re-entry waivers.

I think he only has to clear the one time as well. I know when we sent Kaspar down last year he had to clear the first time, but then moved up and down freely afterwards.

I could be wrong on that one. I wouldn’t be overly worried about Staubitz getting claimed, hell if I’m right about only having to do it once, now is probably the best time to do it.

I didnt think McGinn was all that bad yesterday

He had a lot of energy and looked to be throwing himself around quite a bit.

As for this decision I can only imagine that my proposed line up from yesterday is being given some thought by Toddster:

Murray
Petercki
Moore
Shelley
Staubitz
McLaren

WTC Update

Benn Ferriero has gone from unheralded rookie to right wing on the Sharks’ nominally top line with Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley.

Devin Setoguchi? He’s on the third line with Manny Malhotra and Frazer McLaren.

by Section223 on Oct 2, 2009 3:47 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I was surprised to hear that Mac sent down McGinn because of performance not the waiver situation – also, as mention in the comment section of WTC, how is the top line suppose to develop the chemistry they greatly lack with one of them playing 3rd line minutes. Normally Im a strong supporter of what McLellan does, but I really have to question the drastic level of these moves after one game. It wasn’t a great game, but I’d expect changes on defense rather then offense. I do bet we see Callahan tomorrow, probably for Demers, but maybe Huskins if McLellan continues to be this ballsy.

I’m not sure how you can call him ballsy when he’s playing a goalie with a sub .800 sv % right now…

by Evilducks on Oct 2, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t really know what this means – if anything, I’d say it IS ballsy to continue to play a goalie who isn’t playing so well, but quoting stats after one game is fairly soft either way.

Didn’t we run Ron Wilson out of town for his incessant line changes and public mind games? I don’t really see how this is much different, especially considering it’s after the first game of the year.

we ran ronny out of town

because of years of mediocre showings when the team needed to be spectacular.

line changes happen on every team, every game. that it is the first game of the season with significantly new lineup (heatley, all new 3rd line, etc…) only reinforces that now is the time to see what clicks and what does not. maybe more of an issue in the last third of the season but now i dont really have a problem with it.

guys who skate hard are a dime a dozen. too much rudy and not enough understanding of the system of hockey makes that type of role player the paradigm for success. could be that mcginn hustled to every wrong area of the ice. didnt execute the plan.

i am a huge mcginn fan, and expect him back and blazing soon. ill betcha these sharks come and bring it on saturday, maybe with something we havent seen… glimpses of some really solid pp looks; movement and passing in the first game. just kinda sloppy, ya know? there is no way this team is as bad as the played last night for the next 81+ games.

anyhow, glad to be back watching the best team in the world. Go Sharks.

"I want this team to be tough, smart and prepared to play well under pressure...Everybody here in this organization is going to be held accountable to do their job — their piece of the puzzle to make this team a competitor for a championship every season." J-Mac

I’m a big McGinn fan too, which could have a lot to do with this.

I completely agree that line changes and experimenting with the lineup is a good thing at this juncture of the year (I saw various pairings out there last night), but it still doesn’t change the fact that this may be a bit of an overreaction on McLellan’s part. You see a guy for a month of training camp and preseason, make a decision that he is the right player for this roster, and then suddenly send him down to Worcester based off one game. I don’t understand it.

Why not let the growing pains happen, see what this lineup brings to the table for the first six games, and then make a more informed decision when they hit the East Coast and Worcester is a stone’s throw away? To me this is taking the performance of one game and giving it more weight than a month of observation. Sample size, sample size, sample size. Let the kids make mistakes, hopefully learn from those mistakes, and then see where you are a couple games in.

Seems too snappy this early on.

I understand the position from which you’re coming, but I don’t really think the Sharks played like that was a regular season game. The first thing I wondered when the score hit 5-2 (remember, it was in the SECOND period) was “Did the Sharks have a preseason? This feels like training camp.”

Yeah, I quoted myself, but the point is that one player doesn’t make or break the team (see Marleau, Patrick in 2008-2009) and McGinn has a two-way contract exactly for this reason. Setoguchi was up and down from the big club no fewer than 6 times in his rookie season and that seems to have worked out favorably.

I refuse to be upset about the move unless Jamie pulls a Sergei Kostitsyn and demands a trade because of it. As a consummate professional and an all around likable person, I don’t see him doing that. Give Frazier a few games of seasoning against full-strength squads – I’m pretty sure we won’t see Shelley on Saturday.

Okay, I give up

If any of you recall my “hockey history” from just before preseason, you know that my first game was a NorthStars – Flames game. I would like to know who played in that game, who scored, and whatnot. Basically, I need a boxscore. I’ve been scouring the internets for nearly an hour and all I can find is that Calgary won 5-4 with Mike Vernon in net versus Jon Casey for Minnesota.

Does anyone know an archive site that goes back to the 1990-1991 season? I can’t seem to get beyond 2001-2002.

Your help is much appreciated.

hockey-reference I believe.

I’m pretty sure they have it, I just don’t know how to find it.

by idunno723 on Oct 3, 2009 9:24 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I found that in my original search. I can find the results of the game, 5-4 Calgary, and a different site gave me the starting goalies and their save %s, but I can’t find the scorers.

By the way, looking through those stats from that era, there were some pretty wild games. I saw a 10-3, 8-0, 7-0, and 8-7 games.

Really weird and confusing. I’m thinking there might be a few reasons to do this:

1. McGinn is the sacrificial lamb. He has a two-way so you can send him down and send the rest of the team a message: just cuz you made the team out of camp doesn’t mean you can under-perform. Everyone was just standing around yesterday and it was ugly. Only Pavelski and Marleau played well IMO.

2. McGinn and Corture have chemistry. Maybe McLellan was close to saying yes to Logan and wants him and McGinn to get their timing back over a series of AHL games and come up to form a scoring third line.

3. Going to the front of the net. Out of McGinn, Malhotra and Ferriero the guy who should have been going to the net was McGinn. At least we know Frazier will have no qualms about planting himself in front of the crease.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Oct 2, 2009 10:06 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it might be more of a psychological move than a talent move by the coach. He’s showing all of them that people can be moved at any time. When teachers start a new school year they start off sort of strict to show the students who’s boss, but then after time starts to relax – it’s nearly impossible to start off easy and then become strict. I just think Todd is trying to send a message to start off the year and think the lines will solidify as the season goes along.

by AfroPuff on Oct 2, 2009 10:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, i think there may be something to that...
"Not necessarily. Coming out of training camp there were others that deserved the opportunity to play and we’re going to give it to them quickly," he said. "If somebody grabs that opportunity as Benn did, Benn will play again tomorrow. He had a good game in Colorado. He’s helping. And that’s what some of the younger players have to do. We don’t have that luxury with the older players in waiver situation, so we’ll have to address their situation differently."

That last statement seems to support your thinking. He knows there are only a handful of players he could have done this to and Demers and Benny were better than McGinn.
