Nothing like a blowout to get the juices flowing.

For one night we forgot about giving up the first goal. For one night we cast aside any concerns about the blueline. For one night we got secondary scoring from some surprising names. For one night we put up with Versus' incessant focus on the Sharks playoff issues. For one night we enjoyed the ride.

Praise be to MSG. It makes everything taste better.

Looking at the road trip as a whole, I'd say the Sharks have played roughly half of their periods at a sufficiently competitive level. The stinkers (Washington, first period against the Islanders, initial ten minutes against the Rangers) haven't buried them for the most part, as the Sharks have been able to score in droves following going down early. Whether or not that's sustainable this season is uncertain, but dammit I'm going to try and enjoy it while I can.

We've covered the issue of getting on the board first here and here. Today we take a look at what's the cause of these anemic first stanzas, along with some underlying numbers that may mean scoring the first goal of the game is only a drop of the puck away.

Star-divide

What follows is various statistics the Sharks have amassed at even strength over their first six road games, broken up by period. The averages are the main number, while the raw totals are in parentheses.

Note: Penalties drawn/taken do not include coinciding minors or fighting majors, as they do not put one team at an advantage. I have also chosen to disclude too many men and puck over the glass infractions, as they do not serve as a good barometer of how hard a team is working to draw the penalty. If you want these included in future editions, please let me know in the comments.

Here's three things that jumped out at me, both in the first period and beyond:

1) The Sharks have been getting the puck to the net at evens. In six road games the Sharks have outshot their opposition every first period except for one, with the exception occurring in Long Island (17-7). That's a real positive trend for a team who had trouble in this regard at the end of last season, but it does raise a red flag- something else must be amiss during the first twenty minutes of play. More on that later.

Qualitatively, one aspect of the San Jose's game that could stand to improve is the breakout. It hasn't quite clicked on a consistent basis this season- we've seen how a strong forechecking team is able to restrict that initial pass out of the defensive end, and concurrently disrupt the fluidity of the rush. The tendency right now is to look for the short pass instead of one up the ice, with a large part of that coming from a less aggressive crop of forwards. They have been supporting the defenseman down low more intently (likely due to the abundance of goals below the circles in the first few games) and that obviously is going to mean a more methodical approach to moving the puck up the ice.

Another thing I wouldn't mind seeing once we work our way into the meat of the season is more activity from the defenseman. Shots from the point were the bread and butter of McLellan's offense last year, and if the Sharks find a way to squeeze more rubber through traffic it will take a lot of pressure off the forwards to create chances. The loss of Ehrhoff obviously has hurt in this regard (well, at least in shots sent in the general vicinity of the net), and coupled with the offensively untested Demers/Huskins pairing, it's no surprise the counting numbers have taken a bit of a dip*. Teams have also done a good job of aggressively attacking the puck carrier at the blueline to to take away shooting lanes, but I have been impressed with the defenseman's reads in this regard- they haven't forced too many shots and therefore haven't had a problem with blocked shots turning into shorthanded opportunities going the other way.

*The blueline had 9.95 shots last season compared to 7.66 thus far.

My guess is that McLellan will continue reigning in everyone not named Dan Boyle for the time being and promote the safe play in order to emphasize defensive responsibility first. And that's something I'm completely fine with.

2) Goal scoring at evens has been marginal. San Jose, god bless em', has managed to take advantage of their ever-dangerous power play. A 34.5% road conversion rate is admirable but, as Jonathan Willis noted last Wednesday, will eventually regress to the mean.

So what picks up the slack? See above. Even strength shot differential has been tilted in San Jose's favor all season long even with the massive shorthanded time in the first period (i.e. gassing guys early). With the amount of prolific scorers at the top of the lineup (Marleau, Heatley, Setoguchi), plausible triumphant returns to the scoresheet from others (Pavelski, Clowe), and welcome surprise of secondary scoring lately, it's not out of the question to expect those opportunities to turn into some more red lights.

3) Slow and steady does not win the race. Yikes. The Sharks have drawn just five penalties in the first period while taking fifteen. Even if you selectively throw out Washington (which, comically, is equal to the amount they have drawn in six games), you're still looking at a 2:1 ratio.

In the wise words of Jamie Baker, the majority of these can be classified as "lazy penalties." Hooks and holds born of skating strides reminiscent of your local 40+ rec league. The interesting thing about it is that this seems to be a malady only found in the first period- moving down the line, we see the Sharks drawing more penalties as the periods progress, and subsequently, getting more chances to cash in with the man advantage. That's when they start to move their feet- not surprising when you sit down to think about it. McLellan must be littering the locker room floor with coals at intermission.

Whether this can be chalked up to "make up calls" is irrelevant, I think- the fact of the matter is, for one reason or another, San Jose hasn't been able to put in a strong defensive effort during the first period in front of Nabokov. I didn't include the special team numbers because it would have been way too much information for me to expound upon (along with the fact that even strength play should be a primary focus), but he's faced shots of 23-12-5 shorthanded on the road this season. That's brutal. Talk about earning your paycheck.

To Sum It Up: The underlying numbers look pretty good, and indicate that if the Sharks stay out of the box in the first period they are set up to win hockey games. Early penalties have a way of catching up to you on the road (momentum, goals against, taking the gas out of your legs, etc.), and expecting Nabokov to carry the team through these lapses the entire year just isn't going to happen. If they find a way to come out and skate from the opening draw it looks like they'll be fine.

*****

Mattius Ohlund will be babysitting Victor Hedman tonight, and I'm pretty excited to see what the kid has to offer during an entire game as I've only been able to catch him in spurts this season. They've thrown him into the fire and given him a lot of ice time (both at ES and on the PK) with which he's more than held his own on a less than spectacular club. I'd expect to see him matched up against Patty, with Ranger-Walker taking on Thornton's line.

Two warm weather hockey teams playing against one another makes for a Grumpy Gribaudo.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-1. A hatty for Boyle with Clowe chipping in. Martin St. Louis misses the first ten minutes of the game to run home after bringing sandals instead of skates.

Go Sharks.

If he takes off a piece of clothing for every shot he takes that doesn't go in...

it’s gonna be an ugly sight by the middle of the 2nd period.

Here's praying for another 45 shot game...

I know they have it in them.

I don’t think the Sharks had a bad start at the Rangers. I think it was pretty ugly on the scoreboard, but they came out hard right from the first puck drop.

They were doing the same thing at the beginning of the game that they did the rest of it, except getting the results on the scoreboard.

If they play the same exact 60 minutes they did against the Rangers they will win a lot of games.

Also, I would love to see what percentage of games we take the first penalty.

I shouldn't have said anything.

by perkins.kit on Oct 22, 2009 8:46 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I dunno- taking the first penalty, going down two goals, and getting outshot something like 6-1 (IIRC) in the first ten minutes doesn’t seem like a shining example of what to do to me. It was definitely better in comparison to the Islanders game as a whole, but I don’t think there’s any way you can say it was an effective way to get things going. Hence the classification of a bad start.

On the road they’ve taken the first penalty five times (5/6, 83.3%) and at home they’ve taken the first penalty once (1/3, 33.3%). It will be interesting to see if those trends hold- teams always go shorthanded on the road more during the course of the year, but a 3:1 ratio will come down at some point. Hopefully.

If they play the same exact 60 minutes they did against the Rangers they will win a lot of games.

That’s like saying if you and I stick with our standard beverage consumption during Thanksgiving at Paul & Eddie’s we’ll end up fighting with Hannah. Shit’s bound to happen.

Hell, we can use it as an adjective as well- anytime the Sharks get passed up for a nationally televised game (like New Jersey last year) or get thrown under the bus by an announcer talking about the playoff failures, we can say, “That guy is such a Grumpy Gribaudo.”

Demers vs Hedman

is what I’m really interested in. So far none of the major hockey writing outlets have written anything about Demers, somehow ignoring the fact that the rookie has 7 points (almost twice as many as Hedman and just one less than Carle, who have had many articles written about him already this season).

How long is it going to be before media wakes up and at least writes a paragraph about our -out-of-nowhere Demers? To be he’s been the nicest surprise this season.

In fact, Plank, you should start a trend and do a detailed blog post about him. I think even many Sharks fans are overlooking one of the best stories of Sharks October.

by Ivano27 on Oct 22, 2009 9:25 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s also +5 on a team that’s still struggling playing defense.

I too have a bad taste in my mouth every time Huskins is on the ice. But I think in fairness we should give him 20 games or so before we evaluate him. He’s played less than 10 games in the 2009 calendar year, he’s got a new team (system) and a rookie partner. Giving him some time to get up to speed would only be fair.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Oct 22, 2009 9:53 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Evilducks and I were talking about this earlier this week, and he made the point that Huskins has actually played pretty well. I tend to agree with him, even if the quality of competition he’s facing hasn’t been world class.

He looked terrible in the preseason (and I’ve been one of his biggest critics), but he’s managed to turn it around and prove me wrong. Sure there’s the fact he chased the puck across the zone in Washington, but as a whole he’s provided what we need out of that bottom pairing.

Pleasantly surprised, I am.

The problem with Demers early on was the same one as the Sharks had been facing — missed passes. Because I’ve seen a lot of those out of him, not to mention his questionable positioning in the first game, it’s hard for me to see him as worth writing a paragraph about yet.

I will say that he really turned it up against the Rangers and played particularly well. There was one point, I wondered who the Shark was that was pinching in and taking a one-timer. I was surprised and gratified that it was Demers.

If he keeps up that sort of production, you’ll hear a lot more about him, I’m sure.

There was a Yahoo fantasy piece after the first week of the season

that mentioned Demers as a sleeper pick due to his logging of PP time on this team. After watching a few games and seeing that article, it was enough to convince me to pick him up for the FTF Invitational* (where he has been pleasantly living up to that “hype”).

*I also wanted/needed a Shark on my team. Having 17th pick kinda dwindles the pool a little bit in that regard.

Alright, I just made you an offer, Clowe for Demers. I simply have too many LWs who are all outplaying Clowe right now. But think about it in these terms – at the end of the season, who do you think will have more points, Demers or Clowe?

Bidding war!

I might be interested in picking up Clowe as well, but if you and DownRightUpLeftYB agree on the initial deal you’re talking about here I will humbly step aside. Gotta hold on to the little class I have left.

I’m low on PIMs, and have been keeping one floating roster spot open for swapping in and out players I need for specific stats. Shelley will most likely not stay on the roster all season, though.

I was wondering who picked up Demers. I went hunting for him a little while back and was disappointed to see he was gone. Luckily I nabbed Del Zotto early enough, and that’s been paying off :)

I’m doing a piece on the defense as a whole early next week so look for it then. Huskins and Demers have done a good job in their sheltered minutes, but the fact that he has seen relatively little PK time brings down his stock value in my eyes. I guess I’m just not a big believer in the Norris (and subsequently the Calder) going to the high point producers, but so is life.

Puck Daddy did a Calder watch piece today, but Demers only got a sentence. At least they mentioned him.

Wait — if it’s not for scoring, then what good is defense?

by cerise on Oct 22, 2009 12:20 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, but..

you can’t win Norris without putting a lot of points no matter how good you are defensively. Who knows what future holds for Demers, but it’s a bit early to write off his defensive abilities, isn’t it? I’m just excited that it appears that Ehrhoff is very easily replaced by someone who I have not even heard of until this summer and neither did 99.99999% of all hockey fans.

by Ivano27 on Oct 22, 2009 1:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Of course. I didn’t mean to discredit Demers defensive abilities, only stating that the fact he is seeing little PK time along with who he has playing against doesn’t make him worthy of Calder consideration to me just yet, regardless of his point totals. As you mentioned, the Norris tends to go to the guys who put up a lot of points. It’s more of a personal preference of what type of player I would like to see win the Norris more than anything else.

Agreed on the pleasant surprise. I was worried about that pairing initially, but they’ve done a good job fulfilling their role, and there’s no reason not to expect Demers will get even better as the season goes along. Makes me go from six to midnight just thinking about it.

If nothing else, it’s nice to think our blueline on the PP is not just Boyle and Blake. There really has not been once that I thought to myself, I wish we still had Error, even if he’s still putting mad points in Vancouver. Well, ok, I do think we still had Error every time Murray tries to shoot from the blueline. But hey, at least he’s doing what coaches tell him to.

Demers should spend some time working on his shot as well, although I think it’s sooner rather than later that we’ll see a goal from him.

by Ivano27 on Oct 22, 2009 2:15 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I watched the Blackhawks-Vancouver game last night and Error got absolutely abused in the defensive zone. Couldn’t win a puck battle to save his life and got pushed around all night long.

Still has that nice hard shot that isn’t on net though.

by Evilducks on Oct 22, 2009 4:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, while watching highlights I was amused by dejavu that came about as I watched Error easily abandon his duty and then stand all on his own near the goalie while watching completely unmarked Blackhawk score a goal.. That brought back too many horrible playoff memories.

by Ivano27 on Oct 22, 2009 4:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

As long as Demers continues to be effective on the power play, I’m not going to care one bit at the loss of every bodies favorite German.

Frankly, he can’t be much worse than Error defensively, so there is nowhere to look but up in that regard.

Plus, Ehrhoff is signed for over $3M per year. Demers is only $40k over league minimum.

Nice breakdown

I always like to consider something that is much harder to measure with statistics. Energy. You only have a certain amount of team energy per 60 minutes. I think many teams know that we have the ability to put up huge offensive numbers, so they spend a little extra energy out of the gates to jump on us and try to take the lead.

In most cases as we have seen this year (Columbus, Minnesota, NYI), they might be able to get a lead, but in the last 30 minutes of the game we are that much more effective…drawing penalties, creating opportunities, and overall just spending enough time in the offensive zone to do serious damage. In a case like Washington, their team is deeper and can play the full 60 minutes, continuing to put pressure and score in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

If you want to beat us, you’ve got to have team speed, for 60 minutes, and you have to be able to find the back of the net against Nabby (and our D).

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Oct 22, 2009 9:45 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I think a decent test of energy is the amount of penalties drawn vs. taken along with even strength shot differential. Of course it isn’t all inclusive, but if you supplement qualitative observations with those quantitative statistics you’ve put yourself in a better situation to guage performance.

In a case like Washington, their team is deeper and can play the full 60 minutes, continuing to put pressure and score in the 2nd and 3rd periods.

The problem with coming out to a slow start every night is that you’re going to get buried by the better teams (Washington), especially on the road. Getting going in the first twenty minutes is my biggest concern for these next three games. In theory I’d rather them see play a good game from front to back and pick up the asinine loser point compared to going down in a two hole deficit to start the game. It seems a whole lot more sustainable to me, no matter how good the comebacks have felt. Setting good habits now means good habits later.

In reality, I want them to win every game regardless of how they do it.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Oct 22, 2009 11:47 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

I too want them to win irregardless of how, even though how they win is usually a factor of the same ’ol things. Skating, forechecking, traffic in front of the net for shots, sound defensive play, etc. The keys to success are pretty much always the same, I would just like to see them do these things from start to finish.

We’ve started to see the third and fourth lines chip in with better play, and I think they will be the key to us being able to play more consistently for 60 minutes. Plus I think with the absence of Pavelski and all the new faces we still need 10-15 more games for this team to really gel and to reach that level of consistency.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Oct 22, 2009 3:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s important to note that the Sharks can play good hockey and still lose. Things don’t bounce their way, the other team is playing well, whatever. I don’t mind so much losing a game where I felt the Sharks played during all of it.

I know the pure numbers looked bad at the start of the NY game, but that could just be a few bounces going their way and maybe a turnover or two. I thought the Sharks were skating and forchecking, even if they didn’t get shots on net.

In the end I think we all want the Sharks to win, but I like to look at the positives if there are any should things go wrong.

WTC Update

McLellan is happy with Vesce, but thinks Clowe’s lack of scoring is a “big concern.” He also likes how the fourth line has been performing, even if Staubitz didn’t score. Expect to see the same lineup that beat the Rangers.

Oh, and both Mitchell and Pavelski are skating back in San Jose. No word on when they’ll be returning to the lineup.

And since I have to be in tomorrow morning around 6:30am, I’ll probably leave here around 3 this afternoon, so I’ll be home by 3:05 and have plenty of time before the game starts! Woot!

No

but you could cover the sharks, and then you’d probably have pretty good seats. And while not a millionaire, a journalist can easily make enough to afford season tickets. Heck, I’m less than a year out of school and I considered buying them this season (not this year, it would have put me in the poor house, but maybe next year!)

I seriously doubt that

Nabokov didn’t really have to make any particularly difficult Super Nabby saves, and just because Greiss is a rookie that let in one bad goal once doesn’t mean that he absolutely sucks.

Why are you blaming Nabokov on this? Too hard to admit that first goal was a terrible coverage mistake by Boyle, and second goal that our defense doesn’t start blocking shots till half way through the game?

by Ivano27 on Oct 22, 2009 5:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not blaming Nabokov. I admit, the combination of those two sentences does seem like I am, but I was just commenting about how Nabokov’s play isn’t at the same level that it was against the New York teams. And then I stated that I wanted Greiss to get a start, since it’s been 9 games into the season and he hasn’t started once.

But you’re not watching practices. McLellan does and he thinks Nabokov should start. I trust his judgment on that.

by Ivano27 on Oct 22, 2009 5:30 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know. But between Nabokov’s age and the fact that he’ll probably be starting for Russia in the Olympics, he’s probably going to need a bit more rest than usual this season. And since it’s already been a ninth of the season, and he has yet to get a start, it doesn’t seem like that’s happening.

I know Nabokov is a workhorse, and he’s a great goalie as well. But I’d like to see how Greiss would fare in an NHL game where the Sharks aren’t already down by 4 goals.

Ortmeyer has probably been the best Shark so far. Had two great neutral zone takeaways in the first period.

Vlasic’s wide open net…Seto’s break away there…we have to start converting on our chances like that. Especially when we’ve been playing so awful.

So apparently

the Sharks’ new strategy this season is the ol’ rope-a-dope. Let them blow their wads early in the game, then play well for two periods and slowly take over the game.

Before anyone calls me dumb, I know that’s not our strategy. It does seem like it, though.

im good just busy so i haven't seen much of the sharks this year

i have seen periods of games but this is only the second full game i’ve watched, i just don’t like our defense this year, because defenseman might not be that important in the regular season, but if you don’t have a strong core in my opinion you are destined to get eaten up in the playoffs but thats just my opinion and yes im on nabby bandwagon as always. Lastly it looks like im completely wrong about my marleau preseason prediction thats good though.

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Oct 22, 2009 6:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I agree with you on the blueline situation. I would prefer a motherfucker back there like Pronger, but with the cap space it’s not going to happen.

Demers and Huskins have actually been surprisingly good in their role though, which is a positive. Blake and Vlasic haven’t been clicking like they did last year, and Boyle-Murray haven’t been that solid either, especially shorthanded.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

im okay with a slow physical shutdown defenseman

I don't like you Detroit.

by mattman on Oct 22, 2009 6:32 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Robyn Regehr is one of my favorite defenseman in the league. Definitely agree on that point.

The problem with Vlasic-Blake in general thus far is that it seems like Blake has lost a step, and Vlasic hasn’t improved on his physical play at all from last season. Teams can just cycle down low on them all night right now, and with that being your shutdown pair, it hasn’t been pretty.

Pathetic outing tonight. This team has been very jekyll and hyde this season. Look awesome one night, and like complete shit the next. Frusterating.

Is it wrong for me to want the Yankees to win just cause I dont’ want any SoCal team in the World Series … or any Champion winning game?? :)

They are who we thought they were...

mediocre crap. The same team they have been all year… Nacrapov needs to go.

It was problems with the D

Nabby only can be blamed for one. Be pissed, but watch the damn game before you comment.

Really?

Because Nabby hasn’t been bad…

Thank you

for that in-depth analysis on the Sharks loss. I really liked that one part where you referred to Evegeni Nabokov as Nacrapov because someone really clever would have to come up with that.

You know what

I’m so glad we brought Vesce up. Kid has it and is on even if no one else is helping him out. Go Vesce go!

I get out of French early, only to be greeted by the sight of the Sharks losing 5-2 to a team that they out-scored 10-1 in two games last year.

Now, I know I didn’t watch after Vesce scored, and I really was only half paying attention because I had homework to do, but man the Sharks were flat. And by flat, I mean how the Earth was perceived in the Dark Ages flat. No sustained pressure, the defense sucked, Nabokov wasn’t on his game, and the offense couldn’t convert a scoring opportunity to save their lives (except for Vesce and, apparently, Boyle). They need to get their shit together. Now.

I would hang the Boyle goal on two things- Smith was way too deep in his crease with the puck at the point, and Setoguchi did a damn good job of screening him. Lil’ squeeker through the pads (looked like five hole).

look on the brightish side

they won the presidents trophy last year!
Joe thornton is big!
Nabokov sounds like a russian name!
The crappy defense is only half of the team!

honestly, not too much fun watching sharks game so far this year, save for a few shiny moments, which somehow makes things like what happened tonight awfully hard to watch. poignant moment for me was after boyle’s goal, the 5 guys slouched back up the ice like they were the ones who got scored on.

something is not right in sharkland people, spotty performances, lackluster showing, and atrocious defensive lapses due (in my observation) to lack of anticipation and movement by at least one player on the ice leading to coverage breakdowns. no communication going on.

maybe there is a master plan and this is adversity and process. but as a fan, this sucks.

Its 10 games into the season.

If this was at the 20, 30, or 40 game mark, I would be worried.

once and for all

where are there stats about which NHL team has given up the most first ever league goals or first ever playoff goals? We MUST be on top of that list, we have such bad luck with it! But I wish I could confirm it somehow.
