Off The Post: October 23rd
Conico's off to Atlanta with Lurker Shark for the game on Saturday- they'll be meeting up with Dave Valentine. Have a safe trip fellas.
- David Pollak with the print edition recap of last night's game.
- Ondrej Pavelec gives up one of the most brutal goals you'll likely see all year. Wicked bounce.
- Western College Hockey with a good link-filled post on the top skaters in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.
- Hockey's Future ranks the Sharks prospects 26th overall in the NHL.
- Could Ilya Kovalchuk be the next 100 million dollar man?
- This has probably been mentioned before, but it's the first time I've caught wind of it. The Blackhawks will be hosting Jeremy Roenick Heritage Night on November 15th when the Sharks roll into town. Safe money's on DW taking part in some Chicago pre-game festivities for the second year in a row.
- Turns out John Wayne has played hockey.
- Pucks going off the netting subject to a video review? Darren Dreger reports that this may be gaining some support. I'm in the "hell no" boat.
- The NHLPA is having a whole load of trouble right now, and Rob Blake has been appointed to an investigative committee to review internal operations. Lots of work for a guy that may need to be reviewing some internal operations here in San Jose.
- This post is shorter than Ryan Vesce with a third of the production.
Thrashers on Saturday. Take a couple of stiff drinks tonight and get your minds right.
Go Sharks.

Man
That goal against the thrashers took a gnarly bounce, but really the goalie should have slid out in front of it instead of nonchalantly (sp?) trying to glove it
That goal was brutal. How do you recover as a team from something like that (during that game)? Confidence shattering.
You want to talk about confidence shattering? Having that bum Nacrapov in net this year.

uglier than Vesa's embrassing bouncer
skips like a stone on steroids. Not only does he have to recover from that, he has to block out the Caps fans “cheering” for him. ouch.

And you had Huet’s terrible play a couple nights before. When will goalies learn to charge the puck and prevent those bounces. They can understand the concept of “cutting down the angle” when a shooter has the puck but not when it’s bouncing toward them down the whole length of the ice? Coming out even just five feet probably prevents that goal.

Maybe we should be emailing them this very comment so they can understand it huh?
Tho gotta admit, it makes for great youtube watching … (until it happens to Nabby) … :)

Good God! I hope we don’t drive all the way to Atlanta to watch them play like they did last night!

Which I’m assuming we always do, so it’s pretty much a crapshoot.

Yeah … I know … (sighs) … but … I’m thinking we need a new approach, just don’t know what that approach is yet. I’m thinking of spending the weekend watchign Lexx … maybe that will inspire me to not be depressed bout last night.

doing Halloween stuff all weekend
maybe that will help the sharks mojo some how. Just don’t want them to be scary in a bad way.

I hope Lurker and I don’t FLY all the way to Atlanta to watch them play like they did last night!
(or so I hear – didn’t get to watch the game last night)

According to the “Did you know?” thing on Puck Daddy, the Sharks have allowed a player’s first NHL goal 71 times. That’s around 4 per year, but I’d expect that average to be higher once the season’s over.
Craziness. Absolute craziness.

I dread this every year. For the first few weeks every rookie in the world scores against the Sharks. Even last year when we were flying high, the rookies were still putting them in.
Along with keeping them out. It wasn’t all rookie goaltenders, but the save percentage of guys under 25 last season might have been over the .950 mark.

Without looking I’d bet Steve Mason, Pekka Rinne, and Jonas Hiller were probably responsible for almost all of that damage.

I think Hiller is a bit older than the traditional rookie. Yeah, just looked it up – he’s been 27 since February.
Really, though, not trying to nitpick. I know exactly what you mean.

Wow. I totally thought Hiller was younger. The Caps got dominated by Steve Mason last year but normally their problem is the opposite; they let washed up hacks dominate them (Biron, Nittymaki, Hedberg, Gerber).

where did he get those stats
and how do we compare to other teams!

It was also mentioned during the broadcast last night. I’d like to know how we compare, too.

Radio broadcast, by the way. At least I think it was. I listened to the game on the radio while driving home before I tuned in the telly.

Television broadcast as well. Not the exact number – just that there is an unusually high number of players scoring their first goals against an 18-year-old franchise.

And, according to Drew Remenda
every damned game we are facing one of the hardest working and talented teams in the NHL, who invariably has on their roster one of the most incredibly most talented and fun to watch players in the entire league. It’s no damned wonder

WTC Update
Nothing really of note. McLellan thought Clowe played better, same lines going in to the game tomorrow it looks like. Posters continue to think it’s the end of the world.
ten games in and the world has ended
That does take the pressure off the rest of the season.

How do we go this far into the day without someone bring up Boucher’s gift last year? I can’t remember who we were playing, but he “set up” for it and it flopped right between his legs.

I was originally going to add that (along with Toskala’s brain fart) but decided against it.
Sometimes memories can be a painful thing.

We were playing the Wild. It tied the game 3-3 after the Sharks had a 3 goal lead. The Wild went onto win that game in OT.
I remember that game far too well, so I really didn’t want to bring it up.

That one was brutal...
I was at the game, first row of the second deck, right on that goal line. My buddy and i just kinda looked at one another. We didn’t know what to say! Complete disbelief. It was especially bad that it tied the game, which led to an OTL. Brutal.

New stuff from the official site
Shelley’s blog, which is mainly about getting dressed and undressed. Which apparently happens 7 times on game days.
Pavelski and Mitchell skating together. Mitchell likes it a lot better now that he has a partner. The two usually watch the games together at one of their houses, but would prefer to actually play. Neither has a timetable set for their return, but there is progress being made.

I think Shelley was the perfect player to pick to write a blog this season. His sense of humor is amazing. Should be an entertaining read all season long!
