Oh how the Hockey Gods love to mock us so.
- I'm getting tired of reiterating the same point over and over and over again, but here's the easiest key to the game you'll ever have to come up with- in 85% (6/7) of road games the Sharks have gone to the box first. In 85% (6/7) of road games, the Sharks have given up the first goal. Correlation may not imply causation but that's pretty damning.
- On a related note, here's your fun fact of the day. The only game this season that San Jose has scored first was in Anaheim. Coincidentally, guess who was there? Ticket and travel donations can be sent to my home address. Save the Sharks, support your blogger.
- I thought the third line did a good job generating energy Thursday night, and it seems like they were the only ones generating consistent scoring chances. Big ups to Manny, Ferrari, and Jed Sanseyebrowsmeyer for coming out to play when the rest of the team couldn't manage to do so. Although Malhotra hasn't found the scoresheet yet you can tell he's starting to grasp the system after a couple of rough outings to start the season. The game against the Islanders might be the one we look back on and say, "That's where he got things going," whatever that means.
- Can we please start Greiss tonight? I was miffed McLellan didn't get him in against the Islanders, and that hasn't changed in the slightest. My case has been laid out rather extensively for the last three months (summation can be found here) so I'm not going to even bother saying more than that.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Heatley, Marleau, and Malhotra. Dave Valentine takes a train from Atlanta to Philadelphia after the game to see our boy Brian Boucher.
Go Sharks.

Man, oh man
What I’d give to be able to go to Philly. Have to just settle for Carolina next week.
On the subject of presence at the game, guess who was in Atlanta the last time the Sharks were there (and thumped the Thrashers)?
We’ll be headed out of here in a couple of hours and looking forward to meeting up with Mr K and Lurker.
Fear the Fin....where being an old guy isn't all bad, and the 2nd round can be bad on the heart
Not Greiss!
I’d rather they NOT start Greiss. I’m going to go see this game!!!!
Last time I went to Atl. vs the Sharks, we won 4-1 (hattrick by Cheech) but I was slightly ticked off that they started Toskala. I was hoping to see Nabby… but nope.
So I’m going in today assuming that Nabby’s going to start; he’s my favorite player after all hehe.
This might be the last time Nabby is in a Sharks sweater.. lets see him here
Im a HUGE Sharks fan in Atlanta… last time…. was sad… we saw Toskala…. come on… i WANT TO SEE NABBY!!!! let see him….
What... u got something to say to a Middle Schooler???? Well.... that was very mean.... you hurt my feelings
But....
Tosk played a great game that night. I’d like to see Nabby too, but I’d rather he play tomorrow in Philly.

If I truly 100% thought this would help, Plankdude, trust me on this, ticket and air travel would have been arranged already!! But … alas … it’s not you. It’s them. (grrrrrr!!!!)
I swear they are flipping a coin before each game that decides if they wish to play or not. And sometime after that Ducks game, they all decided getting the first goal just wasn’t a priority.
Neverminding the above – GO SHARKS!!!! (pls save me from having a heart attack today)

Don't start Greiss!!!!!!!!!
His career is doomed! Even though he is unproven at the NHL level and is only 23 years old.

I’d say that comparison is pretty apt. Except that the guy who’s currently starting in goal is actually one of the top 5 or 10 goalies in the league. Benji Molina? Not so much.

Plus, he’s slow as hell, so even if he does get a hit, he’s limited to singles or doubles. And even if he does get on base, it means that the pitcher knows there is no chance of him stealing, and it becomes a ridiculously easy GIDP situation (since Giants hitters are quite fond of that particular play).

Buster Posey is kind of different.
1st round draft pick whom everyone thinks is going to be really really good. He’s is proven in a sense that he hit .327/.421/.538 in the minors.
Now that I think of it, we never really used minor league stats to judge people on the Sharks.
And to me...
I think that’s weird because in baseball you could say, “This guy is going to be really good. Look what he did in the minors!”
No comparison between Posey and Greiss
Beyond the fact that one of them can actually block what is sent their way and one cannot…..Posey would have been the #1 pick of that draft if Boras wasn’t his agent and his salary demands were not so insanely high. The guy was a monster in college and he showed it in the biggest stage of all.
Posey will be a superstar. Greiss needs to be kept on the bench. Whenever we need someone to relieve Nabby, we bring up Stalock or Sexy.
Thats all i’ve got to say about that.

How the hell do you know Greiss won't have a career in the NHL?
If you’re going to make an argument at least supply some evidence….
Thought I might get throw this out here:
"Greiss has taken a lot of steps and is ready for the NHL right now. Goaltending is so much about dealing with adversity because as a goaltender you’re going to get beaten down, Greiss has the calmness and ability to overcome that now." – San Jose Sharks Director of Scouting Tim Burke.
"I feel Greiss is ready to make the jump to the NHL. If you look at his career path he has progressed every year. Last year he got to play a lot of games in Worcester and in the last 15 games or so of the season he played very well and carried that team to the playoffs." – San Jose Sharks Goaltending Development Coach Corey Schwab.
Don't they have to say that?
They can’t say bad things about him because it will hurt his confidence. I think we all agree that he’s up in the NHL so the others can play full time in the AHL. Every single fan and member of the sharks team hold their breath when he is on the ice.
I’ll have say that he definately makes the game more exciting when he plays because I for one and shitting myself whenever the puck is in the defensive zone.

You're probably right.

So you would be ok with Greiss playing every day if Nabby got hurt?
by SanJoseLandShark on Oct 24, 2009 11:16 AM PDT up reply actions
I definitely would
If that’s not the plan…then why is he the backup right now?
by a10dency2ask on Oct 24, 2009 11:23 AM PDT up reply actions
I would not.
I wonder how small the columns can get if we keep hitting “reply”
We need a goalie to play that is actually in our future plans. We need a goalie with a gimmicky name that we can chant. I think we all know that person is Sexy.
Sexy!
Sexy!
Sexy!
Sexy!
Sexy has the mojo.
I wonder how he does with the ladies. He looked to me like he may be balding already.

I wouldn’t mind Sexsmith playing backup either, I just want the organization to find out about/ make a definite decision about theri future. It isn’t beneficial to just play Nabby all season this year, plain and simple
by a10dency2ask on Oct 24, 2009 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions
But the organization is showing the whole world that they are scared to put Greiss out there on the ice. At least he’s making a nice wage this season for his troubles….
by SanJoseLandShark on Oct 24, 2009 11:37 AM PDT up reply actions
not a particularly nice wage at all. He’s making less than Sexsmith, isn’t he? He took a pay cut from last year, he’s playing for practically the min.

Exhibit 1
My best piece of evidence i have to offer is I have watched him play the two games like two years ago and that one preseason game. He scares me. I have not played a second of hockey in my life but he looks insanely slow to me…..like he can make the first stop but if he has to recover, he is slower than poop.
Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury I rest my case.
by SanJoseLandShark on Oct 24, 2009 10:54 AM PDT up reply actions
Seriously?
You’re judging him by two games two season ago (when he was 21 years old) and a preseason game?
Ok I admit that does make sense, Greiss will have no career in the NHL.
Thank you
I would make an excellent lawyer.

Why would it be sarcasm?
I had just called Lincoln Law School after I posted that.
by SanJoseLandShark on Oct 24, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions
In the 1991-92 season
Martin Brodeur played 4 games with the New Jersey Devils. His GAA was 3.35.
I’m not saying Greiss will by Marty, but judging him literally on 3/4 games is absolutely ridiculous.
I don't know why I am arguing this point
Because I truly know nothing about hockey talent. But for some reason I see absolutely no talent in Greiss. I know I didn’t watch the AHL playoffs last year like alot of you did but Greiss just looks like he lacks the mojo needed to be an NHL goalie. He has no presence. When Toskala and Kiprosov (sp?) played I saw something different. Boucher also had that presence………..or at least the size to look like he had presence.
Doesn’t anyone agree with me at all? If not, this will be my last post on this issue. I must be an idiot.
by SanJoseLandShark on Oct 24, 2009 11:15 AM PDT up reply actions
actually, lot's of people agree with you
i’m not sure why they aren’t around to back you up!
by a10dency2ask on Oct 24, 2009 11:25 AM PDT up reply actions
Lots of people agree
because they are under the impression that 3 or 4 games can decide a goaltenders career.
Okay...
Let’s just suppose your right here. Here doesn’t have the “presence.” In what? The 27 minutes he played this year? Are you telling me it’s impossible for him to improve?
Everyone here has made some good points
But at least for now, I think that Greiss deserves the benefit of the doubt. Even if his ultimate role in the organization’s plans are just as a gapstop until the Stalock/Sexsmith show, the fact is that Nabokov should not be playing unmitigated stints during the regular season. I think last season is evidence enough of needing him to be more rested to better compete during the postseason run.
The hesitance to start Greiss is understandable. He’s got very little experience on the NHL level, and granted, when he did spell Nabby during the LA game, he let in a horrendous goal. Nevertheless, I actually thought he made some pretty decent saves (especially through traffic) to keep the Sharks in it during that comeback.
Couple that with the Sharks inconsistent play, I can see why they’re afraid to throw Greiss out there. Nabby has been keeping them in games as of late, but needs more help out in front. General consensus is that the Sharks would be effed if Greiss was in net.
But is that necessarily the case?
I think we can still remember when Vesa went down in 05-06, Nolan Schaefer became the starter and amassed a pretty impressive record of 5-1. I remember watching how Schaefer would often make the initial save, but kicked out fat & juicy rebounds that were nice and ready for opposing teams to pounce on. But the Sharks rallied behind their rookie goalie and bailed his ass out by generally sweeping them out of danger, in the process, making him look really good. Where is Schaefer now? With Niko Dimitrakos in the KHL.
Who’s to say that they wouldn’t do the same to protect Greiss?
The Sharks just might need a Greiss start as a kick-in-the-head to get them back to better habits of helping their goalies with better defensive play. Probably somewhere in the back of their minds, the Sharks believe that Nabby’s got their backs in case they f**k up, leading to poorer decisionmaking. But if you know your goalie’s a little green, they’d tend to be more responsible on the back end, instead of leaving him high and dry like they have been lately with Nabokov.
Even if Greiss would only help the team in the sense of waking them up defensively, I think the benefits to the team and spelling Nabokov ultimately pay dividends in the long run. Still in the end, it’s hard to write someone who’s only had 27 minutes of ice time off yet. He needs to start sooner rather than later.
CSNBA: Nabby was so good in goal against Minnesota, he could have saved everything but the Oakland Raiders’ season.
I've been saying that for weeks now
I actually want Greiss to start in Philly to kick the team in the head and make sure they’re ready to play… if they even get the message.
When did Bruce Bochy start managing the Sharks?
FIRE BRUCE BOCHY NOW!!!!!!

Shoot, going to missing the first part of this one as I have a hockey game. I hope Griess gets the start. He needs to get some starts in, and Nabby can’t get the normal amount of starts this year due to the Olympics, as well as a potentially deep playoff run. (I think Plank also said that earlier.) On a side note, isn’t Griess the German Olympic starter?

I want Sexsmith in goal, but only because the nicknames would be the best in the NHL. We could call him ‘Big Sexy’, or the obvious…’THE Sex Smith". No young woman in San Jose would be safe, even if he was uglier than a box of rocks.
And on a side note: Vesce’s playing like he’s sick of plane trips to Wooooster. He deserves to stay up.

Who knows, they might not have scored that goal if patty’s goal was allowed
maybe
after marleau scores the 4th, the thrashers give up and the sharks score 2 more in 30 seconds and it’s 6-0

Logan Couture scored the game winner for the WorSharks tonight (do not know if that is already mentioned.) Since it was his only goal of the game, he is a bust.
