Pound for pound, this is probably the biggest game the Sharks and Kings have played against one another since, well, forever. At least what seems like forever.
Embellishment? Maybe. Then again, maybe not.
Los Angeles rolls into HP Pavilion tonight atop of the Pacific Division, thanks in part to a current four game winning streak that culminated in a 6-2 drubbing of the Columbus Blue Jackets on Sunday night. Goaltending has been an issue for the club in the past, but this season it hasn't mattered- despite a sub .900 SV% from both Jonathan Quick and Erik Ersberg, the Kings have managed to put the puck in the net at a 3.67 per game rate, good for third in the NHL.
Enter Anze Kopitar.
Fresh off a seven year $47.6 M dollar extension signed in October of last year, Kopitar has clicked with offseason acquisition Ryan Smyth. The formula is simple-- Smyth bangs in front of the net and uses his body to hold the puck down low, while Kopitar is able to rove between the circles and use his excellent vision to find holes where a wicked wrist shot can be unleashed. The formula is also working-- both find themselves amongst the top ten in the early Art Ross race, with Kopitar's 21 points leading the league.
"It's nice, real nice," the Kings center told Fear The Fin in an interview that obviously never occurred. "I've enjoyed my day in the sun thus far. Even if my complexion doesn't show it."
Any concerns that production may slide as the season progresses? "Sure, of course you think about it. You don't end up looking like a raccoon when you're sleeping well. I like to think I aesthetically represent the average Kings fan. [Forty years of] futility has a way of weighing on you, and insomnia probably isn't all too uncommon amongst the faithful."
Despite some first periods that can be described as anything but faithful, San Jose is coming off a successful East Coast road trip in which they posted a 4-2-0 record, picking up wins against notables such as the New York Rangers and Philadelphia Flyers. A regulation win at HP Pavilion tonight would put them back in the Pacific division lead. While not a must-have by any means at this stage of the season, the two organizations will be approaching the game with similar mind-sets. For the Kings, it's a litmus test. For the Sharks, it's an emphasis on traditional divisional roles.
For both, it's an opportunity to make a direct statement. And that's something we haven't been able to say for a long time.
Prediction: Sharks win 5-3. Goals by Marleau (x2), Ferriero, Boyle, and Demers. Frolov goes pointless and subsequently gets traded; Ryan Smyth cries about it because that's just what he does.
Go Sharks.

Wonder if Seto will be back from his gooch injury?

I remember reading somewhere that he was doubtful for tonight… but Pavs and Mitchell practiced with the team yesterday so they’re progressing

Yeah, neither Seto nor Vesce practiced yesterday, so I don’t expect them to be around. However, Seto’s injury seems like something he could just walk back from, so who knows.
Looks like we’ll have to deal with Bust #1 (Couture) and Bust #2 (McGinn) for another night.

It’s kinda like hockey without sticks, ice, skates, and a penalty box. The puck is orange, hollow, and must be bounced periodically. There’s still a net but it’s smaller and raised above everyone’s heads. Also there is no goalie allowed, apparently “goaltending” is frowned upon.

Yeah, they don’t like checking either, and they got rid of the boards, so the giant orange puck is always flying into the stands. Dumb, huh?

Think we see Clowe get things going tonight?
It sure would be nice if our highly paid winger was playing like a highly paid winger. Especially with our better winger out, and our tiny little guy out, and…anyways, the best part of the Philly win is it showed that this team does indeed have some scoring depth. Even with Seto and Pavs and Vesce out, we still won 4-1. Its a comforting feeling, lets hope they keep it up.
Sadly, I won’t be at the game tonight in person, just in spirit. Friday night, though. Its on!

Sucks to have 2 top 6 guys out, and one not performing.
That is a thin-ass lineup.
However, at least it’s encouraging that the Sharks are still 7-4-1 after that hell of a trip considering all the injuries. They are definitely a tougher team now than they were last year.
I was wondering what was up with Boyle’s shot…
Fear the Fin: Sharing Joe Thornton's love of wooly mammoths since 2009.
Gotta say, with the number of top guys injured, Clowe in a massive slump, plus all the new guys coming in (some that came with only a week of training camp left), the fact that the Sharks are doing this well is a very good sign. Shows more tenacity, especially because they keep having to come from behind almost every damn game. Yeah, first periods suck, and they’ve occasionally let their foot off the gas, but they’ve shown the drive to battle back.

Bust
Why the hell is Couture on the 4th line and Nichol on the 3rd? That makes no sense, put him on the 3rd line with McGinn and Ortmeyer.
I whined about this on WTC as well
Agreed. Not sure what McLellan expects out of Couture in a fourth line role. He’s a playmaker, and setting Shelley or Staubitz up is just as likely to result in a puck off the glass than a shot on net.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
I'm trying to imagine
If Joe was a rookie and starting in the NHL and they lined him up with Jody and Brad… It could be 20 games before he manages a point.
Like I said at WTC, I think it’s a product of wanting to play Nichol more and play Shelley and Staubitz less. One center has to toil on that line, and since Nichol has shown that he’s a contributing part of this team, it’s on Couture to produce and knock Nichol back down.
It’s not the best situation for his long term success, though.
Fear the Fin: Sharing Joe Thornton's love of wooly mammoths since 2009.
Clowe likely to start tonight on Thornton-Heatley line

I would think the Sharks would be looking to pound the Kings tonight and show them they are still the team to beat in our division
Pavelski closing in, Pavelski fires, HE SCOOORES!! 5 games not enough! The Sharks have another date in the Lone Star State!
Kings have been all over San Jose on the forecheck. Their forwards are doing a good job of pinching off the clears up the boards.
They’re getting pretty deep and aggressive in the zone though, so if San Jose can hit that breakout pass to the middle of the ice they should get some good rushes going the other way. That’s one benefit to a slow start— sometimes teams will get stars in their eyes and overload below the circles.

They also built a lot of that cushion on the strength of teams who played Anaheim the night before and flying in late on back to backs.
That’s why I take this roadtrip as a success. Lotsa travel. Some adversity. Quality bounceback. If they can sustain that, I’ll settle for some trophy other than the President’s.

Well, the fact that Pavs has been out for so long he has less leverage this year, meaning that he probably won’t get as big of a contract, leaving more money for Patty! /optimism

It’s really unfair. He gets tossed under the bus so often by the fanbase I think we’re (FTF as a general whole) the only one even watching the games anymore.
It might have to do with the fact he jumped over a point shot against Dallas two postseasons ago. Admittedly, that was hard to get over.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Would that be the same post-season where he got up from two ridiculously brutal hits and helped the team win the series? I know I’m preaching to the choir, it just makes no sense to me. How many guys in the league can play all 3 forward positions, ES, PK, PP and skate like the wind?

But when you duck your shoulder into the hit like Ott does, and Darcy Tucker does, it’s not because of the physics of your approach. You can skate forward and put your shoulder into their chest. Those chickenshit agitators are afraid of getting run over like Adrian Peterson on that Steelers CB this weekend. Either throw the hit like a man or don’t throw it.

A little trust would be nice from McLellan, but I see where he’s coming from. No one’s going to fight (Shelley) and you can make the case that they’re not strong defensively (no way they get put out there for a defensive zone draw).
And like Elvis said, Murray hasn’t put his fourth line out there. No need to throw them out and risk giving up an opportunity.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Whichs begs the question
why are you wasting a roster spot on a guy you don’t trust? The Flyers tried to play Cote against the Caps last night, even though the Caps don’t have an enforcer. Cote ended up playing 3 minutes. All game.

I bet most teams use their 3rd. The 4th probably varies from team to team. There are quite a few teams that have PK specialists on their 4th line so they aren’t afraid to use them.

The point being that I don’t think its a waste to have some bruisers on the 4th line who chew up minutes early in the game so the scoring players are fresher later in the game. And I don’t think its a waste of space to have a guy to throw in against teams who things get chippy with to keep things a little more honest, at least. Also, the Sharks have some injuries. I’m sure players like Shelley would be scratched a little more if we had more healthy depth right now.
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!
by ZeroIndulgence on Oct 28, 2009 9:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I can buy the point about giving your 4th line minutes early in the period and then loading up on the guns late. I just don’t buy the value of an enforcer in today’s NHL. If you have a bunch of guys that are tough and willing to drop the mitts with hockey players I think that’s fine. You don’t need one Tough Guy.

I've tried to defend Jody Shelley at various times
Fact of the matter is, he IS a heavyweight. I think a lot of the fanbase here thinks Brad Staubitz or a guy like Frazer McClaren make him redundant, but it’s nice to have a legit guy like Shelley who is capable of stepping up to a Brashear or a Parros or a Laraque. Staubitz and McClaren are still Middleweights.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Right, but what are Brashear and Parros really going to do if you don’t have Shelley? They can’t make anyone fight them, and they aren’t very good hockey players. If they tried to force a fight they’ll just put their team SH so I don’t know why they exist. I suspect it’s more a matter of inertia than actual contribution to the game of hockey.

I supose the argument is
If they are out there unchecked, they’ll just pound on your team. It’s nuclear weaponry. The threat is what keeps things in line.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
The problem is that they just pound on the other goon. There’s no accountability for the player who initially “stepped over the line.”
How does that make player X less likely to take a run at your star? I’m not sure that it really does with the instigator penalty in effect.
Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution
Right. How many times has Matt Cooke fought? He doesn’t, but he’s the guy running the talent. Then the two goons meet and fight, but Cooke didn’t pay any price.

If they play rough with the top lines, the enforcer says, hey don’t play like that or I’m after you.
/brief explanation OT hockey ya know

Fair point
I’m still a fan of Shelley because he does spark the team when he fights. No offense, but I thought Brashear was an arrogant jerk who mostly fought for himself. I still believe Shelley fights FOR the team.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I’m not sure what the difference really is. I don’t think Brash likes fighting anymore but he does it when he has to because it’s the only way he has a job. Fights do spark the team, but the Caps got just as much spark from Matt Bradley fighting as they did from Brash.

It's very subjective
Maybe it’s just me being a homer. But you’re right. Our other fighters provide pop as well.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
I don’t think it’s a homer thing. Everyone loves their enforcer. It’s a matter of whether you think you need one or not; that has nothing to do with who your guy is. After watching the Caps play with “one of the best in the business” for a few years now I just don’t think it matters. The turning point was a game against the Flyers. Brash was out (because he got knocked out by Wade Belak the day before) and everyone was afraid the Flyers were going to take liberties. The Caps won (a very exciting) 2-1 game. The Flyers couldn’t afford to take liberties; not because of Brash or an enforcer, but because it was a close game and they knew the Caps PP could burn them. So far this season the Caps have no enforcer and I don’t think it’s mattered at all.

I missed the last period/OT/shootout winning a free pizza party with my floor. I wrapped toilet paper around myself to look like a mummy, and then awkwardly danced to Thriller. I think it was a fair substitution, especially because it seems like the parts I missed weren’t anything special.

I liked Logan Couture’s work on the 4th line. They had a few chances and even got good cycle going in the 2nd.
