Unfortunately he got clipped by a Getzlaf pp shot in the 1st but he did manage to play the rest of the game.

I saw him crash into the goal awkwardly, Remenda commented that Pavs didn’t get up very quick, but it didn’t seem too bad. He wasn’t skating today, so there’s definitely some concern there. After seeing the 2nd line clearly being our best forward line so far this season, the last thing we need is our central pivot to miss too much time. Fortunately we can slide Marleau to center and bump Ferriero up.

biggest concern is that we potentially have a 4th line of Shelley – Nichol – Staubitz… ugh.

by Teas on Oct 5, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

If he’s going to be out any significant amount of time we can call up McGinn or Couture to fill in on the 2nd or 3rd line and put Stauby back in the press box. Really I think Shelley needs to sit on the pine for a game or two. How did he not have a fighting major against the Ducks last night? Practically everybody was fighting except him.

I’d think McGinn would be more likely to be called up than Couture. Then Ferriero can be shifted up to a second line centered by Marleau, and McGinn can slot into the third line with Malhotra and McLaren, and the 4th line can be the same as it has been. That would seem to make the most sense…

Of course, you never can tell what management is thinking.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

by ZeroIndulgence on Oct 5, 2009 1:02 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah, I’d be shocked to see Couture up so quick. He’s looked fairly green in professional games so far and needs a lot of time in the AHL before being thrown in with the big boys. I agree that bringing McGinn back up makes the most since, but that’d mean we’d either have to put Pavs on IR or re-assign McLaren to Worcester, so we’ll see what the management does. I gotta say that keeping Staubitz with the big club has made of a ton of sense. There really isn’t much room for him with San Jose right now and he can’t be sent down without clearing waivers – a bit of a head-scratcher there.

I just hope this isn’t another situation where one week turns into two turns into a month turns into multiple months, ect. But the fact that Pavs was able to play the rest of the game tells me it wasn’t TOO bad and only after removing the skate and allowing the swelling to happen was he totally unable to skate. I am a little concerned that he needed a procedure, but we’ll see what that means.

I guess this means McGinn is probably on his way back to San Jose.

I was worried that we’d need to bring up a center (I’m actually against bringing up Logan right now…develpoment), but Patty could center the line and McGinn could slide over to the wing. If Ferriero keeps playing well, though, it might be him on line two.

Sucks, but I do like that the team is having to face early challenges. Toughen them up a little.

Plus, it’s way better to sustain injuries in October than in March. My prayer before this season was that we have everyone healthy and clicking heading into the playoffs.

We just traded who for who?!

by BawLa on Oct 5, 2009 1:47 PM PDT up reply actions

As mentioned above, I think McGinn is the likely solution here.

My question is this- why not just put Pavs on LTIR if he’s going to be out a couple weeks? It lets him get back to 100% and allows you to cycle in some Worcester guys. Way too early in the season to try and rush him back.

Onward ho!

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Oct 5, 2009 1:42 PM PDT reply actions

you think there’s a chance we risk Staubitz on waivers to to bring up McGinn if that’s what they decide to do? Seems like the management favors playing McLaren over Staubitz, and Brad looks like he’s simply taking up a roster spot at the moment. That is if they decide not to put Pavs on LTIR.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Oct 5, 2009 1:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I would prefer they put Pavs on LTIR, but if they don’t, I couldn’t really tell ya what happens.

Do I think Staubitz gets picked up on waivers going down? No, not at this point in the year. He has a two-way contract and his AHL salary is below $105 K, so he’s not subject to re-entry either.

Like you said before, it’s quite strange they decided to keep him on the roster, especially because it doesn’t seem like he’s even a starting lineup option. All he’s doing right now is taking up cap space.

I like cycling through some of the Woostah boys to start the year. So many of them had LOOOONG looks during preseason that I think the possibilities are endless, not unlike the never ending pasta bowls at Olive Garden.

by stufflife on Oct 5, 2009 2:10 PM PDT up reply actions

Putting Pav’s on LTIR does two things.

First, and most important, it gives him enough time to get back to 100% so we don’t have to deal with any lingering crap throughout the year or worse, re-injuring it.

Second it starts to build some extra cap space. We can bring McGinn back up, and still be sitting on about an extra 1mil of space (pro-rated to whatever that is per day) for later in the season.

I’m going to miss Pav’s being in the line up a lot, especially with one of our other great PK’ers already out (does anybody remember what Mitchell even plays like anymore?), but the Sharks need to take care of this the right way if he’s going to miss a couple weeks.

I think you can retroactively put guys in LTIR as well if rehab doesn’t go as expected, so maybe they’ll just wait a week and see what happens.

by Evilducks on Oct 5, 2009 2:26 PM PDT up reply actions

Good point on the Cap

Lots of people around the league love to ridicule our cap situation given how much we have tied up in Thornton, Marleau, Heatley, Nabokov and Boyle. Anything we can do to get wiggle room, especially later in the year, is a plus. Don’t want to end up like the Flames who had trouble fielding a full roster or anything.

by ElvisVF101 on Oct 5, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

I think it’s a good idea all around to LTIR him. No need to rush him back, and like you said, gets us some extra coin with the prorated cap.

Looks like I’ll be wearing my old Marleau jersey on game days now.

Definitely bad news...

It’s really bad news, particularly because this is a Sharks team rife with new faces, and a team that’s definitely trying to find its chemistry right now. When a piece this important is yanked out of the mix during this crucial time, it could definitely cause some problems down the road.

by OtherKid on Oct 5, 2009 2:10 PM PDT reply actions

It’s not good news of course, but I wouldn’t say it is going to cause some problems down the road besides the possible dip in standings points due to a shorter bench on the PK and a loss of some firepower in the top six.

If a guy like Heatley or Malhotra goes down maybe it prolongs the chemistry of whatever line they’re on, but Pavelski has been in San Jose for awhile now. I wouldn’t say this is an especially crucial juncture of the year to deal with the inevitable injuries that occur over the course of an NHL season.

Joe Callahan reassigned to Worcester

Seems like the Sharks never like the have more then the bear minimum when it comes to depth, unless it’s Brad Staubitz – perhaps they might be considering him as depth at both forward and defense as he was initially a d-man.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Oct 5, 2009 2:40 PM PDT reply actions

Bah, I don’t want Staubitz on the blueline. He’s good for worst case like you said, but if they’re not putting Pavelski on LTIR (a comment from someone in Off The Post seemed to suggest they weren’t planning on it) then you have four games to get through with 6 blueliners- after that comes the East Coast road trip, and subsequently, a chance to pursue some short term call ups if McLellan wants to scratch a starting six defenseman for fatigue purposes.

By then Pavs is back? I’d prefer if we just LTIR’d him, but if the staff thinks he’ll be ready to go in late October then hopefully I won’t have to see Staubitz take offensive zone hooking calls.

Not me, whenever I’m trying to talk friends into going to games with me I always use the fact that it’s highly likely there will be a fight at a Ducks-Sharks game.

It’s practically a selling point.

fights are actually

my least favorite part of the game by far, but who am I to say what belongs and doesn’t!

with Callahan reassigned, maybe we’d have enough room to bring McGinn back without LTIRing Pavs – although I don’t know exactly how our cap space would work in this scenario. I don’t wanna rush Pavs back either, but if the Sharks play like they did against Colorado then Anaheim on a regular basis, I could see them wanting the option of bringing him back quicker. It’s early in the season, but I can imagine the not wanting to fall too far behind the other big guns in the West.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

i hope they don't rush him back

remember last year when he got injured for a few games in december, he wasn’t really back to “normal” for a couple months!
