David Pollak reported yesterday that Joe Pavelski will be out for a couple weeks after sustaining a left leg injury in Saturday's game against Anaheim. My general take is this- why not place him on LTIR? You allow him time to fully recover and avoid the injury management issues that plagued the coaching staff last season. This isn't an especially critical juncture of the year to deal with the inevitable injuries that occur during the course of an NHL season- "a couple weeks" can mean just about anything in coach speak, and while it's entirely possible the surgery Pavelski went through will cause no extra rehab time, erring on the side of caution two games deep isn't a bad route to take in my opinion.

Then again, there is always the penalty kill to think about.

It's about as early as it gets in the 2009-2010 season, but one thing that's going to be very interesting to observe in the pocket of time that Pavelski is sidelined will be the shorthanded unit. Here's a snapshot of McLellan's shorthanded minute dispersion thus far amongst the leading forwards:

Skater GP SH TOI/G
Marleau 2 4:26
Malhotra 2 3:01
Pavelski 2 2:46
Ortmeyer 2 1:58
Nichol 2 1:53
Thornton 2 1:01

Forwards have seen less that a minute of average PK time include McGinn (0:56), McLaren (0:54), Ferriero (0:50), and Setoguchi (0:36).

Star-divide

Boy oh boy, is Marleau shouldering a heavy load or what? Granted, the Sharks have been shorthanded 11 times this season (on pace for 451, which is well above the 306 they had to kill last year) and that's going to come down once the sample size increases, but it's still a bit surprising to see Marleau punching his card that often out there. I wouldn't shut the hell up about it touched upon it before the year began, but the hope was that he would see some reduced minutes in these situations with the addition of Malhotra and Nichol- now that Pavelski is on the shelf, Sweeney Todd won't be able to slice that time unless San Jose does an excellent job of staying out of the box. Keeping Marleau humming at over twice the amount of any forward on the team not named Malhotra is unsustainable in my opinion.

So who makes up for Pavelski's loss? I'm not a big fan of McLaren on the PK- he's serviceable at even strength considering he's facing sheltered competition, but his skating ability makes it hard for him to effectively pressure the blueline and get back to help out down low. A team that can move the puck well will eat him alive. Setoguchi hasn't ever been a defensive dynamo, so I doubt you can rely on him for much more than he's already giving you.

This leaves Benn Ferriero, Joe Thornton, Scott Nichol, and Jed Ortmeyer. My bet is that Nichol gets the biggest bump due to the fact that he can win you some faceoffs and is the most battle-tested out of that group. Ortmeyer comes next, and the rest of the dominoes fall in line. Jamie McGinn saw a lot of PK time in the preseason, and even though he was demoted after one game, Pavelski's injury opens a door for him provided someone gets sent down and/or Pavs is placed on the LTIR- McGinn also helps shore up the scoring pop you lose in this situation, which will be important if Ferriero cools off as we make our way through October.

Should be interesting to watch over the next couple weeks. Here's to killin' by committee.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-3. Goals by Heatley, Clowe, Boyle, and Malhotra. Fear The Fin gets put under surveillance by the FBI due to the combination of "killin' by committee" and the fact that our name could (and should, ya hear me!) be interpreted as a recruitment site for a terrorist cell.

Go Sharks.

Don't know

If had been mentioned before, and I certainly haven’t read it anywhere credible… But perhaps I could share my hypothesis on the Pavs situation by maybe relating to a personal situation. If what we have heard and been told is true is that Pavs was injured blocking a shot on the PK, had a minor surgical procedure to correct said injury, and will be out “a few weeks.” Well if it’s anything to do with leg injuries, I think I can relate. My knees and ankles have been sliced and diced enough (with plenty of complications I might add) to be able to throw a guess… and yes a GUESS as to what might have happened. I’m thinking possibly bone bruise accompanied by a blood clot. From the limited medical triage abilities I have learned an acute blunt force trauma to any part of the body will cause bruising, and if centralized over a bone, will in fact cause the bone to swell as well. Due to the trauma accompanying such a blow, it is natural a significant bruise will develop. Now this is not just your best bud coming up and laying a good charlie horse on you. This is a small piece of vulcanized rubber flying at HIGH velocity over a relatively short distance, thus allowing me to guess that it was close to it’s peak energy. Now from watching the all-star shot competition, I know that some of these damn pucks are traveling at well over 80 mph. So this in essence negates whatever padding you might have placed between any part of your body not the thickness of at least a goalie’s pads. More than likely causing significant damage to soft tissue and possibly bone. If Pavs did have a blood clot that was found from the amount of bruising, then he would have had to have had a minor surgical procedure to extract it somehow and then be placed on blood thinners in order to prevent the return of more OR it was something else altogether… like I said, this is merely GUESSING at this point, or more or less insomniac ramblings on my part. Either way, we are losing our kick ass PK guy and set up man for Patty. Here’s to a speedy recovery!!!

Wow

This news has completely ruined my day… I pray for a fast, and more importantly, FULL recovery! Hopefully Pavs and the organization are smart with this and Joe doesn’t come back too soon. very interesting thoughts from SetoThorMarChooSki.

Go Sharks and Fear the 8 when he returns!!!

Pavelski closing in, Pavelski fires, HE SCOOORES!! 5 games not enough! The Sharks have another date in the Lone Star State!

That actually makes a lot of sense, but then again, my legs haven’t been sliced and diced much at all.

Lets hope it’s as simple as this and we’re basically just waiting for swelling and bruising to go down.

Being a orthopaedic poster child from the waist down myself, I agree. My first thought was blood clot from a bruise.

Caveats to the PK numbers

Let’s consider the Anaheim game an aberration in terms of PK minutes. Anaheim brings out the goons in us, and there were some sketchy calls. These things happen.

The Sharks are generally in the lower tier of times penalized, so I don’t think heavy PK minutes will be a bit concern. Also, Ortmeyer took some of those penalties, and you have to figure if he’s not in the box, he’ll be on the PK. Also, Scott Nichol had 2 fighting majors during some of the big exchanges. You expect him to be on the PK. Malhotra took one of the penalties as well. So, there’s three of the guys you expect to be logging big minutes not on the ice.

Also, given how early in the game the penalties started coming, I’m not surprised Todd had Patty take the first PK shift and get him going early.

I know people have said Nichol is prone to taking penalties, but again, against Anaheim, you have to consider it an aberration. Nichol is a heart and soul kinda guy, and if the goons step up, you know he’s going to as well.

So in these big penalty fests, yeah, we’ll rely on Patty and Pavs to spearhead the PK, unless of course Pavs is taking phantom game misconducts for headbutting, or throwing stingers in a fight, the freaking goon!

It’s early, and we are down a great center in Pavelski, so we’ll see what Todd does. I do concur on LTIR. Makes total sense at this point in the season.

But alas, I don’t rule the world. There would be far more pizza, wings and hot chicks in short skirts if that were the case.

Yeah, like I mentioned in the piece, San Jose had to kill 306 penalties last season- the rate at which they’re headed at now is going to come down once the sample size increases.

As for Marleau, his totals don’t vary much at all between the two games. He was on the ice 4:19 against Colorado and 4:34 against Anaheim, which is like a third of a shift. Factor in the shorthanded time (7:52 against the Avs, 10:07 against the Ducks) and you can make the case he was leaned on more heavily in Colorado considering he played over 50% on the kill.

But alas, I don’t rule the world. There would be far more pizza, wings and hot chicks in short skirts if that were the case.

Toss in lower level seats (row 12 at center ice) and you’ve got me sold.

It’s a good time to be in Minnesota, after the MNF game last night and a potential playoff run by the Twins. This is by far my favorite time of year, sports-wise. Makes me feel older

and I’m still in my early twenties. Sign of the times: my friends daughter is 8 (born in 2000!), and we were watching a VHS tape of an old Disney movie (Lady and the Tramp I think). First of all, she had no idea what a tape was or a VCR. Best of all, when we were done, her mother told her to be polite and rewind the tape before putting it back. She looked at us like we were from outer space.

my youngest said we should be winning since the Kings suck … (shrugs) … I didn’t really have much to say cept that we still have 2 periods left

It was a terrible period

Really. If we’d gotten lucky on a few of those bounces, we’d be tied at least. It just didn’t go that way.

Damn, Sharks on the PK when the second starts. Just means it’s time for another Marleau shorty!

Ryane Clowe

The season is young but is there something wrong with Ryane Clowe? He just doesn’t seem to have it like he did before. Oh and it’d be groovy if he and others would keep their skates moving. Thanks.

I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that.
