Where Were You?

Well, I'm just curious about this and I thought I'd bring it up because of how we were talking about stuff that happened before we were born during the the Sharks-Kings Gameday Thread. This question I have is for all of the older people on this blog, so enough wasting time, here it is. Where were you when the Miracle on Ice happened??? And what was your reaction to it?

Star-divide

If you don't know what I'm talking about, then punch yourself, if you still don't know because you're half monkey, then this should give you an idea what I'm talking about. As for why I want to know, there are a couple reasons:

1. During summer vacation, I was forced to read 2 books, but we had a choice what books to read. There was a list of books and one of them was about the Miracle on Ice and the players involved. Obviously, with me being a hockey fan, I choose that book. When we got back, we got into a discussion about our books. I told him what book I read, he paused for a moment and said, "That game was insane. I remember exactly where I was when that happened. And you can ask anyone that was around at the time and they'll be able to tell you where they were, it was that big."

2. I wish I was alive back then to experience that. It must've been amazing, and it will never happen again because of the way Olympic teams are put together. No country is going to send college kids to compete in the Olympic qualifiers to go up against the best players in the world. That will be the last time an upset of that size will happen. I really wish I was around to see that, and I'm just curious about what it must've been like to see it.

I'll repeat the questions in case some of you old timers can't remember what it was :) Where were you when the Miracle on Ice happened??? And what was your reaction to it?

Hmmm...

I was born in Jan. 1982 – 23 months after the Miracle on Ice. Also 13 months after John Lennon died.

I could go on… but I won’t.

I was living in Fremont

The game was not televised live on TV because it was played in the afternoon. I had already heard about the score when I returned home from work, but nevertheless watched the evening telecast. Even though I knew the outcome it was a breathtaking experience watching it. It was the first time in my memory that the chant “USA, USA” was used. In my long life it is the single most exciting game I have ever watched, live or on TV, the place was electric. I have been to world series, NBA playoffs, super bowls etc. nothing will ever match that single event. What none of you really understand is the time and place it took place, the USSR was enemy #1, the Iranians had our hostages, inflation was almost 20%, and as Americans we were feeling pretty low.
No one would have ever guessed that a short 9 years later the USSR would collapse.

Uh, I watched it on TV

Wait, was the book the Boys of Winter? Because that book is amazing, and one of the two that I brought to college.

Loved that book, great read. Same with the recent Herb Brooks book, The Inside Story of a Hockey Mastermind.

I was 4

I don’t remember the exact game but I remember going out to eat with my parents during the olympics and there was a tv set up in the restaurant (not to sound too snobby, but my parents aren’t the type to go to restaurants with tvs in them.) As a 4 year old I was more impressed with the idea of watching tv during dinner (gasp) then what was actually on the tv. Plus, my parents are a bit anti-sports, so I doubt they would’ve been that interested in the game

The game wasn't televised live.

I was about to get out of the Navy and had shore duty so I heard about it while working in a hanger at Moffitt Field. I’d been a Seals fan growing up so I’d been following the Olympic team closely when duty permitted. The game against the USSR came at a time we were spending our days and nights chasing Russian nuclear subs off the coast of California. Beating them meant the most to us even though it wasn’t the Gold Medal game. It’s funny because I met a cab driver in Orlando four years ago that was from Russia and was a former submariner who’d served in the Pacific at the same time. He didn’t hear about the game until four months latter because they were on a deployment between California and Hawaii. He was still pissed! Ironic.
