The Cannon

Try this one on for size- player X makes the roster out of camp, gets sent down after one game, and then is recalled in time for the home opener. Apparently management decided that skating Staubitz and Shelley for a combined 9:32 of ice time wasn't going to do a whole lot of good in the way of winning hockey games with Joe Pavelski out.

As for the Sharks as a whole, they've been heavily outplayed in the defensive end of the ice; while I'm not a big Nabokov apologist by any means, he has been hung out to dry a lot thus far this season due to some very soft plays in front of the net. I may have labeled the blueline a weakness before the season began, but there was no expectation for it to be this poor at even strength. Learn something new every day.

Three games is a small sample size to be certain, and I've refrained from delving into a significant amount of analysis due to that fact. However, in looking at the roster, there's really only two guys you can expect to make notable strides from where they were last season- Vlasic and Demers. Boyle has never been a defensive dynamo, Blake may regress if anything, Murray has likely hit his expected ceiling, and Huskins is at the point in his career where becoming a bonafide top-four defensive defenseman is not in the cards.

This isn't to say things won't improve- I think they will eventually, but it won't be without the requisite growing pains every team goes through at the start of the year (face it- we're spoiled from 2008). October has it's fair share of road games, and November looks to be a very difficult month as well. With the extreme roster turnover this offseason, I'm betting on more Jekkyl & Hyde affairs in the coming months. Toss in the fact that Pavelski's injury is going to hurt the team defensively (especially on the PK) along with the lack of cap space Wilson has to work with (read: good luck finding an upgrade on the blueline outside of the organization), and well, it's probably best to get ready for a tumultuous ride before we hit December.

Keep the car running indeed. You can think of me when you forget your seatbelt.

Star-divide

At any rate, with Ken Hitchock and his three chins bouncing their way into town tonight, how the Sharks move the puck at even strength will likely to determine where this one ends up in the standing column. Columbus is going to do an excellent job of clogging the neutral zone, funnel the puck carriers towards a specific side, and then stand them up at the blueline. David Pollak of Working The Corners reported that the team worked on battling in tight corners during practice yesterday, and hopefully that preparation pays off tonight. Generate speed in the neutral zone, dump the puck into the far corner where your streaking wingers can retrieve it, and then win the possession battle. It's not going to be a pretty plan of attack, but that's what this team needs to do- grind it out at even strength and not rely on powerplay production to keep them in games.

McLellan will likely use the last change to make sure Rick Nash sees a healthy dose of Vlasic-Blake all night. It would be nice to see Pickles rebound after some pretty porous outings thus far this season, and a solid game against one of the best power forwards in the league will hopefully get his legs going. We need him desperately back there.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Heatley, McGinn, and Blake, all coming at even strength. Manny Malhotra misses an empty net opportunity at the end of the game on purpose, spoiling his former coach's dinner plans.

Go Sharks.

Is that what you call a getaway?

Tell me what you got away with.

Musical stylings of Brand New aside, I’m stoked to see Heatley doing well and scoring points. He’s actually a decent setup man, and that PP goal showed us how he earns a living. Here’s to hoping Nabby pulls his head out of his we-all-know-what and turns in a recognizable performance in net. I know he’s been hung out to dry, but he’s supposed to be an elite goaltender for crying out loud.

Let’s get back on track, Nabby,

It would be a lot cooler if it were a cannon or something. This is going off the assumption that “Bluejackets” refers to civil war soldiers. Or even something like this:

Civil War Nostalgia

I also assume it’s an old school military reference, but just color me one of those people who thinks nostalgia for the civil war is not the greatest thing considering what a dark chapter it was on our history on BOTH sides.

Fair points all around

I mean, we have the New England Patriots, the Tennessee Volunteers and the Ole Miss Rebels. The Blue Jackets is not terribly offensive like, say, the Redskins or anything.

Redskins isn’t offensive, it’s a sign of respect as far as I’m concerned…

Or at least no more offensive than Vikings, Fighting Irish, Trojans, Spartans, etc.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 3:58 PM PDT up reply actions

Coincidentally, my seminar today covered this very issue.

We decided that if the group of people that the team was named after voted that it was too offensive, then the team should change its name/mascot. If not? They’re good.

Right, I’ll go ahead and poll the Trojan’s about the use of their name.

I think this is fair use, I don’t believe they copywrited the name.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 4:03 PM PDT up reply actions

Never said my seminar was full of geniuses. A couple of guys apparently are only going to USC so they can raise their value in the MLB draft (no, seriously).

But, if it is a historical name like Trojans, Spartans, VIkings, etc., then that doesn’t create undue strife and whatnot to an existing group of people. American Indian tribes still do exist, and therefore if they are unhappy about a mascot, they probably should have some say in it. Same with the Irish, although I don’t think any of them object to Notre Dame.

Then again, if there are any groups that object to the Blackhawks’s logo (aka the best logo in sports), they’re just stupid.

Well, the Trojans really don’t have any decendents, the rest still do.

Vikings are Sweedish/Norsemen (we should rename the Redwings to the Vikings…)

Spartans are just a subset of Greeks

Celtics are just a subset of the English

Irish are self explanitory

And there were groups that protested the Blackhawks, but I had read somewhere (and I could be wrong) that most native americans don’t have any problems with the names. It’s another case of the vocal minority ruining it for everybody else.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 4:14 PM PDT up reply actions

Again, most of the people that protest this bother me. What’s wrong with having a huge group of people worship your ancestors and have people that root for their rivals hate them?

Being from Irish ancestry I love that my ethnic group has a famous mascot out there. Makes me proud. Even if the English did abuse us for centuries. I’ll also order Irish Car Bombs at a bar without whining about it.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 4:18 PM PDT up reply actions

Oh, I’m in total agreement. I mean, I don’t exactly have one unified ancestry to be proud of (my family has traced their lineage back to 9 different countries), so I don’t get that pleasure, and so maybe I don’t have that feeling of entitlement. But still, to have a team named after your people is pretty awesome – it means that somebody thinks enough of you to compete under your name.

PC groups can go suck it.

I didn't mean to blow up the thread with politics again

But it is an interesting question. I do draw a distinction between the Blackhawks and the Redskins. Blackhawks refers to a very specific tribe by a title of their choosing, much in the same manner as Irish, Trojan, Viking or Spartan.

But we would find it in pretty poor taste to refer to a team as the “brownskins,” “yellowskins,” or “whiteskins.”

Anyway, that’s my $0.02. I’d make more arguments, but Michael Silver makes most of them for me:

Anyway, thanks to everyone for the good discussion. I’m happy to civilly continue any and all discussions.

I see what you’re saying. If something was a slang derogatory term you could have a case. I’m half Irish and half Polish and I’m trying to think how I’d respond to a team being named the Pollocks.

Still, I’d be amused. I’ve always found it’s easier to embrace names than to try and fight them. The more you fight them the more people will use them against you. I don’t think the Redskins is trying to be insulting, they’re trying to depict a culture that struck fear in their enemies.

Look past the name and look at the intent.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 4:42 PM PDT up reply actions

Look past the name and look at the intent.

I’m generally with you on that.

I suppose where you and I might disagree on this is that all attempts at honoring aside, I always found a bit of ill intent in the name. I can totally see how some people would find respect in the term based on intent, but for me personally, I think it’s worth CORRECTING a mistake of using such a name and going with something more appropriate that better CAPTURES the intent (i.e. Warriors or something like it).

I’m also just personally not for “embracing” names as it were I suppose. I think people have a right to identify themselves rather than have someone else identify them. It’s why I personally am not a fan of the name “Redskin.” And I’m also of the view that you don’t have to “try” to insult someone. It just happens sometimes. And it takes mature responses on both parties part to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

If they were just naming the team then I’d agree, but they’ve been around the better part of a century and you’re going to create a lot more problems changing the name, even if you do changing it to something like the Apache or Comanche etc. People will still whine that you’re insulting their culture or some other garbage, you’ll irritate your already dedicated fans and if you go with something entirely different you’ll look like a bunch of cowards in the long run afraid to stand up for themselves.

They’re going to stick with that name at this point, good or bad.

It’s not like schools that have changed their mascots have had the best reactions to the change anyway.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 5:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I disagree. The fact that these names came about in a time when casual and virulent racism was the norm in mainstream society makes it even more bizarre that they’ve survived. The worst offender is “Redskins”, by far.

Stanford is the Cardinal now with no ill effects. I haven’t heard anyone mistakenly refer to DC’s basketball team as the Bullets, or mourn that name (even though “Wizards” is a pretty awful team name).

I don’t think tradition is a good enough reason to continue team names and mascots.

by ievans on Oct 8, 2009 5:54 PM PDT up reply actions

Hmm.. I don’t know, it’s a toss up between the Redskins and Orangemen.

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 6:00 PM PDT up reply actions

If “orangemen” was ever a slur against English Protestants, it’s faded.

And Syracuse changed their name to the Orange a few years back.

I always thought it was similar to redskins

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 7:04 PM PDT up reply actions

I don’t care if these conversations take place every now and then, as long as the subject of hockey is what people come here for.

If that changes (not expecting it to) then we might have to engage in my worst nightmare and start regulating comments.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

I try to keep that in off topic :)

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

I think most people who don’t see the controversy over the team name “Redskins” probably weren’t subject to national policies that aimed to eliminate their ethnic group. Having that happen to your ancestors, and then having a bunch of douches insist that their caricatures and warpaint and tomahawk chops are signs of respect would make me pretty mad.

That said, changing sports mascots is not number one on my priority list for when I’m named Grand Poobah of the world.

Apropos of this, I recently received this bit of awesomeness:

My favorite detail? The Izod alligator below the left collar.

by ievans on Oct 8, 2009 5:37 PM PDT up reply actions

Being Irish I fully support teams using my ancestry as a mascot. Celtics and Fighting Irish both do to some extent. Both have been subject to being conquered and controlled by the English, which are the ones that settled here. Doesn’t really bother me.

Some team wants to call themselves the Caucasians, then awesome, though I think he should have a bowler hat instead of the dollar sign as that doesn’t really fit, even in caricature. The alligator is awesome.

Come on, how insulting is it to have my people characterized as a leprechaun trying to punch somebody? Because all Irish people look like midgets trying to punch you in the face right?

by Evilducks on Oct 8, 2009 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

No, I totally agree that it doesn’t really bother me, and I’m part Irish. But I bet it would bother people in Ireland if an English soccer club was called the “Paddies,” had a similar mascot to Notre Dame, and their fans dressed up as leprechauns.

The fact that we’re not bothered is surely related to the fact that our relatively recent ancestors weren’t cleared from their homeland and killed as a matter of policy by the US government. If you were still feeling the effects of England’s control of Ireland, you’d likely feel differently about how English people stereotype you.

It’s pretty misleading. The revolutionary army was pretty poor, so I doubt they had a nice standard uniform, although I think they were technically blue (as opposed to the Red Coats like you said). Then again, Columbus was not really a major factor in the revolution, being part of France and all.

If they send McGinn down after tonight’s game Ill be pissed. There’s no need to have Staubitz and Shelley out there together.

I’m thinking the fact that McLellan can’t get more than ten minutes out of the duo (or any PK help) is the main reason Mcginn was called up, and not the possibility of a Staubitz suspension.

Also, I think the Sharks are raising the most banners in the league this year – Detroit just has Central division and Campbell Bowl, and Pittsburgh has Stanley Cup and Prince of Wales.

doesn’t really make sense to have a western conference banner when we did not, in fact, in the western conference – that’d be Detroit.

Oh, so that's where you edit your signature

by Teas on Oct 8, 2009 2:19 PM PDT up reply actions

Was thinking the same thing

Division banner and President’s Trophy banner… is there a “head of the Western Conference” banner? Because we didn’t WIN the conference (like Teas said, that was Detroit).

Its selectively double dipping in order to create an increased sense of accomplishment. The nature of winning a Presidents’ Trophy ensures that you were the best regular season team in the Conference due to the fact you were the best team in the league.

Rather bush league if you ask me.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Oct 8, 2009 2:29 PM PDT via mobile up reply actions

A team like Montreal would scoff at this – they don’t put up anything but the actual Stanley Cup banner (of which they have 24, obviously). Their rafters would be flooded if they added in all the division and conference banners over the years.

Fear the Fin: If you're a Fin, you're family.

by Conico do Mayo Miracle on Oct 8, 2009 2:32 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, a team like Montreal is uniquely positioned to do this.

Most teams will put up the division and presidents cup and conference champs (from the playoffs at least) banners. They are accomplishments. Winning the division is an accomplishment. Winning the Presidents Cup is a huge accomplishment, even if it didn’t lead to post season success (and I’m kinda tired of hearing people talking about how they shouldn’t even honor it…not directed specifically at anyone here, maybe I just read WTC comments more than is mentally healthy). They should have banners up for that.

The Western Conference Champs banner is quite redundant, and a wee bit misleading, though. So I’ll agree that it would probably be better to leave that one out. Although I’m not sure anyone leaguewide will care. And if they don’t care, and it fills out our rafters a bit, so be it. If it helps marketing of the team to have a few more banners up, no matter how redundant they are, by all means they should put them up.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

by ZeroIndulgence on Oct 8, 2009 3:05 PM PDT up reply actions

Personally I can’t believe they’re doing a Western Conference banner. Not sure if it’s done league-wide for teams who win their Conference in the regular season, but it really shouldn’t be. The Presidents and division should have been enough.

yeah, all it does it piss me off more about our regular season ‘accomplishments’ but total ineptness when it comes to the post season.

by Teas on Oct 8, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Agreed.

But whatever, the rafters were pretty barren…this should fill them out a bit more.

Hey

At least they’re not arbitrarily retiring numbers. Because, IMO, that’s worse than putting up a Western Conference champs banner – they can always take a banner down, but it’s hard to unretire a number.

WTC Update re: banners

Folks at WTC are having the same conversation as FTF.

In the comments, from DP:

A,

If there are only two new banners tonight, that means they’ve taken one down as they were on display at the morning skate.

Let me hedge a little bit, though: the one in question might have said Western Conference Regular Season Champions. I didn’t take notes and there might have been that distinction. Can’t recall.

You know what bugs me?

When people say “shoot the puck.”

These guys are professionals and they know what to do. If they don’t shoot the puck there’s a reason for it. Whether he its a shot he knows he can’t make or he thinks passing would be the better play.

If the pass did go through, easy goal for McGinn and he’d Clowe would get praise. If his instinct was to pass, he obviously didn’t see the dude going down to block it.
