Three goals, two screens that led to goals, one assist, and a +6 on the night. Not much more you can say.

Or is there? Leave a quote for the accompanied picture in the comments.

Great spending time with K, Lurker and Ang – oh and Heatley’s hat trick was cool too. Great to be back at home.

What impressed me the most

was the quality of his goals. Every single one of them was a beauty.

We really never had a scorer of this caliber play in San Jose.

I sure hope he enjoys it here for as long as possible.

So Heatley is the no. 1 star of the night on NHL.com. Gaborik is no. 3 with another hat trick. Fine. But can someone explain to me why Hornquist of the Predators (likely a game that no one in NHL watched tonight) with his 2 goals is no. 2 star while Joe with 4 assists is not?

Frazer is never gonna beat you in a race, but the dude has pretty decent hands and he’s fearless – Shelley is a good guy, but we’re see Frazer McLaren emerge as a new age tough guy who can handle the fights, but drive the net and score a handful of goals per season.

He’s a work in progress right now and he’s not producing the offense yet, but he’s growing into his new role. His offense is coming and he still needs to learn to move hit feet a bit more and shoot rather then pass. I think he’ll benefit more with Pavs back in the lineup.

Those who wanted Boyle to play more minutes...

You got it. Boyle ended up playing 27:06, by far the most of the night.

And interestingly, Marleau only played 16:48, about four minutes less than his usual. But, with the exceptions of Vlasic, Boyle, Thornton, Blake, and Shelley (the only one with less than 10 minutes), all the players played between 10 and 20 minutes tonight. So the ice time was pretty evenly distributed, which I think is a pretty good sign.

What can you say?

Incredible offensive performance last night, seeing the top line click like that was amazing and I think we can hurt any team in the league in their zone. If we can strengthen the D then things could really start to happen.

We all knew Heatley was good, but I’m sure everyone must be shocked at the all-round package he brings on the ice. And what a way to mark your arrival at the Tank.

Anyway, that was well worth sitting up through the night for. I’m sure we’ll all remember Dany’s hat trick for some time to come.

Holy crap!

The Tank was electric tonight! It was amazing being there. I liked how they just unveiled the new banners (and yes, they had the Reg. Season Western Conf Champs one) without any fanfare or any of that. It was perfect. Yes, we had a good regular season last year, but that isn’t the point.

I definately had to jump to my feet when they showed Roenick up in his box. Damn I miss having that guy on the team. It was awesome the response he got from the crowd.

And then, jesus, the second period was pure joy. The Heater Hat Trick sent the place into a frenzy. And then, everyone got bored, and they were doing the wave for like 20 minutes so I couldn’t see, and half the place left after the penalty shot. But god damn, it felt good to be back at the Tank…and the Sharks sure made us feel welcome!

Mclaren's fight

How has nobody brought up the fact that he had NO RIGHT ARM!!!!! for like the first 30 seconds of his fight. He was caught in his jersey and was taking some weak punches from whoever it was he was fighting. When he finally got it free, he proceeded to whollup the guy in the back of the head. It was awesome.

I couldnt believe he continued the fight with only his left arm though.

by SanJoseLandShark on Oct 9, 2009 7:36 AM PDT reply actions

Sort of. I think he did that to himself in an effort to get his arm free with no elbow pad so he could wreck face.

It’s one thing to fight the guys on Columbus.

It’s an entirely different matter to go up against the likes of Donald Brashear, George Laroque, Wade Belak and George Parros.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Oct 9, 2009 9:59 AM PDT up reply actions

Yeah, but does it really matter? Detroit fights the least of all teams in the NHL, and they don’t have or need a heavyweight. Capitals right now don’t have a heavyweight and neither do Penguins or Bruins.

In playoffs there is no room for someone like Shelley. Yet we keep him and for reason play him, even if not in every game.

by Ivano M on Oct 9, 2009 10:11 AM PDT up reply actions

Detroit, Pittsburgh and Washington

Those teams have a real identity and are able to exert their will in a game without being pushed around.

Until the Sharks enjoy the level of success that at least Detroit and Pittsburgh have enjoyed in the playoffs, I don’t think they can get away without having an enforcer, because, truthfully or not, the book on this team is that they are soft and won’t step up to the plate when the going gets tough and they can be pushed around.

I like Frazer, I like Staubitz, and I like Clowe getting in the occasional scrap, but even Brashear and the like aside, there are a lot of big boys in this league who would love to make a name for themselves dropping the gloves with anyone on our roster.

Look at our own division. Anaheim has Parros, LA has Ivatans, Dallas has guys like Barch, and Phoenix has guys that always seem willing to go.

I agree, you won’t see much of Shelley in the playoffs, but if that’s true, it’ll be because the team has found an identity, and people really are afraid to face the team.

For better or worse, no one, except for Nashville, is afraid to play us in the playoffs.

It’s VERY early in the season, so talk of playoffs is a bit ridiculous, but this team has been through a lot of turnover. Shelley represents a bit of stability, and even if you’re not afraid of him as a scoring threat, he’s still something and someone the opposition has to contend with. If Staubitz and McClaren can handle being an NHL heavyweight AND provide more offensive upside than Jody, great. Until then, I’d be hesitant to hand them the keys to the car.

after seeing that display from Heatley…I have one thing to say. With all the scout and trade credit billy bean gets credit for with the A’s, Doug Wilson makes that look like childs play. as soon as he scored the second goal i said to my step dad “wow..so THIS is what it’s like to have a real sniper on your team” and gotta love the confidence. favorite quote of the night when they were interviewing him for first star and mentioned thornton might have had the 5th assist and he replied with “oh it’s no big deal. he WOULD have had the assist on the breakaway if i hadnt been brought down” like it would have been laughable to even consider garon stopping that breakaway. love it. D still needs to tighten up and not have breakdowns to leave nabby in no mans land. but things are looking better.

What a game. I was in sec 227 thanks to some last minute scalping…

I don’t understand how people can be hatin’ on the wave. Sure it is a little oldschool, but unless if you come up with a new song or chant and have the guts to get the crowd going, don’t be hatin’ on the wave. That was the longest wave I have ever seen let alone involved in. People in sec 225 were booing the section a couple down because they weren’t continuing the wave. It seemed to really die between sections 201-209 but 210, bless their heart, got it going again every time.

Between the home opener, in home blacks, Heater’s hat trick debut, two awesome fights…it was the perfect night for the wave.
