The Sharks and I have this dynamic-- when they're playing great hockey like they are right now, I'm happy as hell but have shit to write about. It's much easier as a self-loathing blogger to point to something and say, "That's what you're doing wrong and here's my idea on how to improve" compared to, "Hey that was a sweet goal there Marleau, maybe we can get a cup of coffee some time and watch The English Patient together in our jammies." It's always easier to get pissed off and moan and complain when shit hits the fan*, but on the same token, it's never a fun way to spend an evening. This is probably why a career as a male cheerleader never really appealed to me, even with the promise of pillow fights and glowing adoration from all my peers-- I would have gotten bored with the cushiness of it all. A career as Dennis Rodman's public relations manager? Now that's something I could get into.
*I understand what the term means, but honestly, has actual shit ever hit an actual fan in the history of the universe? It's not like monkeys can pick one up on the cheap at Ikea. Then again, some people like to pee on each other. Maybe someone somewhere has thrown shit at a fan. People are strange.
At any rate, right now the Sharks are rolling like it's '08. 6-0-1 in their last seven, with the majority of these wins recorded without the services of Pavelski or Setoguchi (both will play tonight). Nabokov has been stellar in bailing the team out when they need him to, a 17 game performance that has placed him 5th in GAA and T-6th in SV% league-wide. Patrick Marleau and Dany Heatley are on pace for fifty goals. Joe Thornton has done his share of easing the PK burden. Kent Huskins and Jason Demers have been a pleasant surprise. Hell, even the secondary scoring has managed to kick in a few teeth since the last time we talked, in what seems to be vast improvement in an area that San Jose needed to address from last season.
It will be interesting to see if this production holds as we move forward-- although goals per games played manages to nullify the increase in games secondary scorers have played this season, when someone like Pavelski goes down a "secondary scorer" gets bumped up into a much more favorable goal-scoring situation. Ryan Vesce's a perfect example of that-- all three of his goals have come when playing with either Thornton (2) or Marleau (1), even though he's not a top six guy when the team is healthy. It's doubtful that he will be able to continue this rate of production with Shelley and Nichol City on the fourth line.
So what does this all mean? Just that there's a small disclaimer to what may seem like overwhelmingly positive numbers on the Sharks stats page. This isn't to say I've been disappointed with the lower lines-- au contraire mon ami. You have guys flourishing in their roles whether it be playing the kill, throwing the body around on the forecheck, cycling the puck down low, winning faceoffs... the list goes on and on. Toss in the occasional puck in the net and you have me sold.
It almost makes the loss of notorious bloodhound Marcel Goc bearable. Almost.
As many of you know, I'm a huge McGinn fan. If he sticks around until the end of December I'll probably buy a jersey and wear it out on dates. Once Malhotra leaves next season because we won't be able to afford him (which is going to suck), Couture will slide into that third line center role and TCY and I will probably have to shut down the blog for a few days to sufficiently celebrate. I'm not saying that the divide between Worcester and San Jose is akin to the Berlin Wall, but it's pretty damn close. Once that is torn down for good the Sharks will probably never lose a hockey game again.
Anyways, I'm really excited that McLellan decided to keep him up with the team this shuttle around-- with how things were handled earlier this season, I'm guessing he probably just hid under the bed in his hotel room and didn't answer the phone. That's another reason I like him-- dude will do anything he can to stay on the big club, even if it means having to skip a meal or two and play tic tac toe against himself with discarded candy wrappers.
*****

Well alright then.
Prediction: Sharks win 5-2. Goals by McGinn, Nichol, Ortmeyer, Heatley, and Marleau. Little known fact-- Barry Trotz's life story was adopted and rewritten as the smash hit fairy tale Three Billy Goat's Gruff.
Go Sharks.

You’re only saying that because the thought of Couture and McGinn playing together full time has got you a little chubs.

Torrey Mitchell Induced? No, I don’t think so. Maybe when he’s back to playing, though.

sorry
my FTF joke radar is a bit outdated, I’ve been MIA lately in case no one noticed (because everyone’s like wtf where is wtcycle when I don’t show up i’m sure), but my theory has been pretty solid, I stopped going on FTF during the games and the sharks are 6-0-1 in their last 7 (again, please don’t ban me).

While the secondary scoring is on the up and up
…And that’s definitely a necessity for the Sharks, I would be scared if I were any other team, because the Sharks top 6 are getting healthy. And if everyone’s contributing, thta’s the sign of a veritable powerhouse.
At least, IMO. With teams of yesteryear in Detroit and Colorado looking so dominant due to their 3rd and 4th lines stepping up at all times, it looks like the Sharks may be on to something.
Only time will tell.

continuous bout with a blood-cotting disorder
Maybe if it didn’t have to sleep on a cot all the time his blood would be more comfortable and not bother him so much. Just a thought.

Agreed..
Tootsie Pop is and always will be a nasty customer. It’s his way. Sort of like the way your armpit stinks at the end of the day. Tootsie just gives off an odor of foul play and dirty deeds done with sheep. I look forward to the fisting of Jordan’s mouth by Staubey’s right trunk. Let the beating begin!
Go Sharks!
by Suisun Dan on Nov 10, 2009 2:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Realistically
I think Staubitz would be more wary of a rematch that Toots. He’s the better fighter and would be extra motivated given the beat down Staubby gave him. I’d expect Shelley to step in and protect his teammate if anything, I doubt Staubitz will drop the gloves even if Tootoo challenges.
Then again, what do I know?

I don’t frequent it as often since Capcom sold them off. Once they started getting rid of most of the fighting game cabs (Capcom vs SNK 2 in particular, but getting rid of Project Justice was the backbreaker for me), I din’t have much of a reason to go. I mostly frequent Golfland or the SJSU bowling alley if I feel like playing a coin-op.

Concur actually
I think my head exploded after seeing some of the stuff that was possible in MvC2. Way too many options, so much shit on screen. Tatsunoko vs. Capcom sort of brings it back to the 2-on-2 system and is a little bit more restrained, thankfully.

Re: Tatsunoko – I had a chance to play it once when they were beta-ing in Japan last year. I think your assessment is actually pretty accurate. a middle ground b/t MvC1 and 2. Although the new button system still takes some adjusting to – didn’t really figure out how to switch properly and japanese instructions didn’t really help.

Since they stunk it up in Europe to start the season. Plus I bet the Queen hates American cars.

Blame ESPN's European arm
Real Canadian/East Coast bias, drives me insane. But still, got this game on and then the Chicago game at the weekend, so I’m just glad not to have to rely on iffy streams.

There were advantages
To the glow puck… it didn’t help that I had a 19" TV when it was around.
Now that I have a 46" Plasma I think it was one of the worst things to happen to hockey, along with the shootout and trapazoid.

Little known fact: Ray Charles was able to watch hockey in the mid 90’s.
What a monstrosity that was. I second your list of worst things, while tossing in the loser point in the event of an overtime loss as well.

Honestly, the glow puck wasn’t that bad. And I also do wish for it sometimes when watching a crappy stream. Another issue with the streams is the poor quality of ice noise. Does anyone else have huge issues following the game if you can’t hear the sound of skate blades and sticks?
by tarlinian on Nov 10, 2009 4:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
i wouldn’t mind the glow puck if you could turn the setting on and off. kinda like the SAP button. it would make my life easier when explaining the game to a hockey noob where they can actually follow along with the play.

“The expression [the shit hits the fan] is related to, and may well derive from, an old joke. A man in a crowded bar needed to defecate but couldn’t find a bathroom, so he went upstairs and used a hole in the floor. Returning, he found everyone had gone except the bartender, who was cowering behind the bar. When the man asked what had happened, the bartender replied, ‘Where were you when the shit hit the fan?’ " [Hugh Rawson, “Wicked Words,” 1989]

Or, it ends there...
Torrey Mitchell suffered a setback Sunday during his Worcester reconditioning assignment. But how big a setback remains to be seen.
Mitchell and a member of the Hershey Bears tumbled to the ice together in the first period of Sunday’s game. Mitchell felt pain in his left leg — the same one he broke in two places on the second day of training camp — and his game ended at that point.
"We don’t know if it’s minor or major or anywhere in-between," Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson said Sunday, adding the team should have a better idea later today.
Wilson said that while it involved the same leg, the latest problem isn’t in the same area.
The 23-year-old center had hoped to be in the San Jose lineup after the All-Star break and was getting in shape with a three-game stint in the AHL. He scored a goal in his first game Friday and Sunday’s contest against the Hershey Bears was his second contest.

Torrey Mitchell has indeed been sent to Worcester on a conditioning assignment, something Todd McLellan called a very big step. Someone like Devin Setoguchi misses two weeks and no conditioning assignment is necessary; someone like Mitchell who hasn’t played a regular season game in 19 months needs to experience game conditions before leaping back into the game at the NHL level.
Obviously the team isn’t afraid of history repeating itself.

The Ballad of Torrey Mitchell
Sharks fans have long suffered under a burden of playoff disappointments and occasional scoring imbalance.
In these troubled times, a whisper and a legend have grown among the Teal Faithful. The legend tells of a young forward of great speed and handsome looks who brought balance to the lineup. He was said to win greater than 80% of his faceoffs, and be a top penalty killer while scoring 20 goals in a season. He was said to have the mythical heart that was so lacking in playoffs past, and would deliver to the team the fabled “spark” which would bring the team over the dreaded hump.
Tales tell of a shorthanded goal scored while dragging the entirety of the hated Anaheim Ducks on his back before blinding the goaltender with the radiance of his awesomeness and destroying the net with a blistering shot.
There are very few confirmed sightings of this legend, but the important thing is, he gives the team, and the faithful, something they often lack in April and May… hope…

I saw that on MonsterQuest
I saw the Torrey Mitchell episode and it was pretty much the usual…an hour of being led along by stories of “sightings” and “footprints” and fuzzy pictures. Always turns out the same: some crackpot with no teeth shows us “evidence” like plaster casts of footprints that look like white poo, or links to fictional face book accounts and “conditioning assignments”…
humbug I say.
