Oh, Dallas. I keep sitting here trying to think of things to say. The hate, the hurt, the pain.

It's tough to cut open my heart, let it pour out, allow those rivers of emotion to cascade through the hollowed tunnels of an unforgotten past. Sure, I've tried before, and it felt good for a fleeting moment-- a brief reprieve from the demons of old, a clove of garlic, a nazar stone.

And yet these therapeutic measures grow weary as the days toil onward. The warm blanket I wrap myself in? A figment of the imagination. It does not exist. What of the ill-timed Turconian turnovers during the final stage of bygone battles-- surely they must soothe the soul, comfort it, make it whole again? The sun swelters as the cheshire cat grins; the memories grow ashen and are carried off with the wind. A figment of the imagination. If only they had found the right to exist.

And so today I wake, forever asleep. These eyes they blind me, these words I weave forsake me, this tongue I trust constricts me. The road traveled is barren with neverending sagebrush and stone. To the left a scorpion inches his way towards it's prey, stinger poised to inject venom tasted thrice before. He is content. He knows nothing of fear, cool confidence clashing with the draining desert heat. The pace quickens. Blood this heart pumps begins to course through these veins at an expeditious pace. A quick glance to the right reveals another of his sinister brethren. Straight ahead now, forge ahead now, there will be rest for the weary. There must be. And yet like lightning they explode and multiply. The ground breathes. Swarming, they reveal themselves, detonating upwards through the cracks in the Earth. One final push is all that remains, one final gasp of air before all is lost. A seam appears amongst the rising tide, this unrelenting wave, this malicious onslaught.

Star-divide

Grey skies open up into a piercing blue. A horizon stretches on into the distance, mahogany and gold. A path beckons and is taken, winding through a lush forest filled with exotic birds and sunbathing baboons. It is here that peace was born, here that love found her wings. The trees part slowly, revealing an ancient engraving set in stone. Cascading down from the heavens are three beams of light, softly forming a halo around the ancient text.

And it reads:

Tonight you enter Our Home. An oasis of hope where Faith and Passion reign supreme. These are not idealistic, nor are they illusory. These are Our Laws. Nineteen men have sworn their lives to protect Our Law, to protect Our Home. Nations tremble before them. Mountains crumble below them. The Earth gravitates towards them. And these stalwart spirits will blot out The Sun, The Sky, The Moon, And The Stars.

Also, Go Sharks. Big fan of that whole ice hockey thing. Could do without the shootout though.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by Marleau (x2), Heatley, and McGinn.

Go Sharks.

I will be at the game tonight, and I’ve been neglecting the Sharks-Stars matchup when choosing my tickets recently.

First time I will have seen the Stars in HP since the playoffs two years ago.

Should be good. Go Sharks.

It’s hard not to with Stalock playing as well as he has been. And then there are those comparisons to Broduer (stick-handling) and Nabokov (extremely competitive) which are both pretty nice.

I think we’d all be happy with a Broduer-Nabokov hybrid.

But I think Doug’s reasoning has much more to do with other factors. As a former defenseman and GM who has dealt with injuries to his blue line, you have to think he’s in favor of getting rid of the trapezoid because it would significantly reduce injuries to defensemen.

That, and Stalock is awesome.

Fear the Fin: Sharing Joe Thornton's love of wooly mammoths since 2009.

by That'll Cheech You on Nov 12, 2009 2:14 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

If you want to prevent injuries to defensemen, get rid of touch icing. That’s another shit rule.

The trapezoid doesn’t even do much in terms of limiting goalies ability to play the puck. When there was no trapezoid, roughly 75% of the time the puck was played behind the net anyways.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Nov 12, 2009 2:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

It annoys me because most of the new rule changes were done in an attempt to highlight the skills of players, except the trapezoid which limited the additionally skilled goalies out there.

Might as well make fast skaters where rental skates to slow them down to everybody elses level and take away curved sticks while you’re at it.

by Evilducks on Nov 12, 2009 2:27 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Aside from the Don Cherry highlights, how many guys really get hurt on touch icing? And it’s not so much the act of “touch icing” that gets guys hurt as it is “forecheckers being assholes.” I’m not really tied to it one way or another, but wouldn’t a PIM for initiating contact on an icing challenge achieve the same result? Give a guy 2, 4, or 5 for playing the body on those puck challenges; you must go for the puck. After you’ve stopped you can go back to full contact but you don’t get to use your full-ice momentum to rail a guy that needs to put himself in a vulnerable spot.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 12, 2009 3:19 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Do you buy the argument that one is enough?

Sharks fans will remember Marco Sturm breaking his ankle on a bad icing play. And Torrey Mitchell’s bad karma started after the freak play with Kurtis Foster.

But even if you don’t buy the “one is enough” argument, it’s worth asking ourselves, does the non-automatic-icing add anything significant to the game enough to justify it’s inclusion given the risks it entails?

You could, also, reduce injuries by removing all checking from the game, but 99.99% of hockey fans would argue that you remove something essential from the game. I don’t think you’ll get that argument when it comes to icing. And if it saves one freak injury, I’m all for it.

They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn

by ElvisVF101 on Nov 12, 2009 3:32 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The problem I have with touch icing is that it provides too much gray area.

A rule stating that a two, four, five or whatever penalty still leaves these plays still up to the referees discretion as to the intention of the forechecker— was he going for the puck or was he trying to play the man? Was incidental contact made or was it intentional? If a player is injured, how severe was the injury? Who committed the injury and who was injured? It just smells like another trip to the Wheel of Justice, and that’s not something I find especially pleasant.

Maybe this opinion is heavily colored by the Kurtis Foster injury I witnessed two seasons ago, but I don’t think I even care. It’s a dangerous play with very little affect on the nucleus of what is exciting about the game of hockey.

Fear The Fin: Where Selling Your Soul Is The Likely Solution

by Mr. Plank on Nov 12, 2009 3:35 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

I know it’s not this bad, but I swear half the time the refs get the call wrong anyway. I see the two players skating back for the puck and I watch the ref blow that whistle no matter who touches it first. I’d rather them just blow the whistle before two guys go colliding in the corner than blow it after no matter who got their first.

by Evilducks on Nov 12, 2009 3:40 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

The wheel of justice point is well taken, and generally I’m opposed to increasing the number of subjective calls the refs have at their disposal. I know that I could develop a pretty clear and rational standard to apply, but I have no confidence that’s how the NHL would do it. (Strict liability, you make contact with the man on an icing chase and it’s 2 minutes; if you intend to make contact and basically just play the body, 5 minutes; I’m not opposed to some sort of “incidental damage” call that would be 4 minutes for injury if the ref thinks it was just incidental contact. but you put the clear and heavy burden on the forechecker not to hit the D or it’s a PIM. Considering how the crease/goalies are treated now I have no confidence the NHL could administer that.)

As to the change in play, there are certain plays where the offense would definitely get the puck and set up in the offensive zone. I know I’ve seen some teams use it as a way to break into the zone when they need a goal late; take your fastest wing and have him fly down the far side and the D fires the puck in hard enough that either the goalie has to get out and stop it or it goes to the wing. Touch icing would end that. You already see the “he was trying to make a pass” exception (which I don’t think makes sense) and you see all the other pro-offense rules the NHL has. Touch icing shouldn’t be an opportunity for a forechecker to destroy a D; forecheck icing should be an opportunity to catch D changing or too far up ice and establish possession in the offensive end.

Like I said, I’m not really passionate about this, I just think there’s an argument to be made. Whether the loss of man-games is too much for the loss of offensive opportunities (and corresponding offensive chance for the opponent on the following face-off) is a subjective line. I’m not a proponent of “one is too much” because that line of thinking leads to draconian treatments that generally go too far.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

by Fehr and Balanced on Nov 12, 2009 3:48 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed on the “he was trying to make a pass” exception— it’s becoming more of a defensive strategy to jam in a line change rather than an offensive strategy to put the establish possession in the offensive zone during the course of a game, especially when a skater sits at the blueline only to tip the puck in. That being said, I don’t really mind it— sure it’s taking advantage of the existing rules on some level, but it doesn’t necessarily restrict the flow of play.

As for no-touch icing, I really don’t think the entertainment value of the sport would be adversely affected. Like you mentioned, it would reduce the long dump in play, but that doesn’t outweigh the potential injuries saved in my opinion, no matter how infrequent they may be.

It really comes down to the trust level I have in Colin Campbell to administer logical and fair suspensions, along with the trust I have that 100% of the players in the league will respect the rules in place given the varied nature of the enforcement of these rules. We can get into the shoulds and coulds of what players will do in regards to these plays, and I agree— in a perfect world everyone would respect everybody, and if an infraction occurred, there would be relevant reprimand. But all it takes is one yahoo to ride an opposing player into the boards. With the speed at which these events occur, that can be an extremely serious injury, and that greatly outweighs the marginal pros of touch icing in my opinion.

I’m convinced.

If consequences dictate the course of action, then it doesn't matter what's right, it's only wrong if you get caught. If consequences dictate the course of action, then I should play God...

I saw that at the game. Had to borrow my neighbor’s binoculars to take a look. The neighbor, by the way, looked like Ray Romano.

Oh, and the ushers were slow as hell at getting down there. The EMTs were there quickly and stayed down there for a while. The boy looked to be about 10-12 and was wearing a cap. Stupid Nashville! Maybe the boy should get a chance to punch Tootoo in the face, since the long-awaited Staubitz-Tootoo main event didn’t happen.

“You know, I heard Stalock is projected to break every single one of Gretzky’s records.”
“Uhh, Stalock’s a goalie. Wasn’t Gretzky a forward?”
“What’s your guys’s point? Come on.”
“That’s true. Good point.”

Or, when some opposing forward touches him and he falls over.

My wife mentioned that the other day that she misses him. I think it’s because he’s German and handsome. She saw him one day at Big 5 and talked about it for days afterward.

I was missing the german accent, but then Greiss gave a post game interview and even that went away.
