Looking all serious at The RBC Bank Center in Raleigh, NC

Something tells me the ear defenders on the kid in front are to shield him from the profanities yelled by disgruntled 'Caineiacs.

WOOOOO!!!

Dave, Bobbie and I were just pissed off at the quality of the ice = I want Dave to go off on it, because he was PISSED.

Thanks for capturing the moment, Morti!

Yeah, I guess I did get a bit generated, didn’t I?

But it was for good reason….that surface, SUCKED!. We noticed early on in the 1st that the puck seemed to be jumping sticks and bouncing more than usual. After the OLYMPIA (note, not Zamboni) resurfacer finished between the 1st and 2nd, and they dimmed the overhead lights, we were able to see how bad it really was. I’m talking, after resurfacing, deep gouges and standing water puddles.

I’ve done quite a bit of searching on the web and can’t find a whole lot about OLYMPIA resurfacers, other than they claim to be the second most used. Well, duh. Not such a big claim when you figure that 99 percent of the surfaces in North America use a Zamboni. What really surprised me was that I couldn’t find any critical reviews about the Olympia’s performance.

I don’t know why something isn’t said about that surface. Really, it was just abysmal. I bitched about it so much that the guy in front of us with the headphone child left between the 2nd and 3rd, after giving Conico a lecture on the finer points of ice resurfacing and why the Olympia was such a superior machine. Then again, perhaps it was the score and not just me. I was tending to personal matters and missed the lecture. Good thing for the guy, ‘cause I’d have asked him to explain the gouges and puddles on the “superior surface.”

I have a picture of the surface immediately after "resurfacing"

And it looks like Christmas in the Park’s ice, only shinier (all the Olympia does is coat the ice with water, rather than scrape it).

The dude who “corrected” me must not have been to many other arenas for comparison – had he done so, the ice would have looked as abysmal to him as it did to us.

For what it’s worth, the RBC Center was a really nice place to see a game – cushy seats, too (only place besides HP where I recall having cushy seats)… my derriere is spoiled.

If I may compare:

Olympias are kind of like Prius’, and Zambonis are kind of like Hummers

It was a very nice place to watch a game. The staff was very nice, solicitous even, (an usher asked me how I was enjoying the game between the 2nd and 3rd. Loving it! was my response) and with the exception of the ice expert in front of us, the fans were great to be around. I must say, from my own perspective, it was really great to see Ray Whitney’s presentation for his 1000+ game

A Canes fan, standing next to me when I was taking Mr Happy for a walk, commented on how big the Sharks were as a team (no correlation, I’m sure to the activity of the moment) and wanted to know “what’s up with that nr 3?”
