Hey San Jose, long time no see. Sure there's those highlights on sjsharks.com that are available, but as soon as I witnessed Jamie "I'm your biggest fan" McGinn get upended ten seconds in I didn't even bother watching Scott Nichol trolley track some poor defenseman with his head down, and I sure didn't see his first goal as a Shark (wild guess here, but I bet our favorite Patrick Marleau look-alike beats his man wide to the right circle, cuts to the middle, and throws the puck on net for a nice little set play that Nichol ends up deflecting past Rrrree-nay. After the goal, Nichol probably looks at Ortmeyer, smiles, and pumps his fist as if to say "Here's what you missed out on Mr. Poile." This is all in theory though).

It's hard to really make comments based off game video (alright, I did end up watching the entire thing), but here's three I'd like to throw into the mix for the sake of conversation:

  • Thomas Greiss didn't have much of a chance on 3/4 of the goals against, but one thing I've noticed before is that he's very aggressive when attacking the shooter and leaves himself out of position because of it. That backdoor play ends up being open a lot, and sometimes after an initial save he'll be so far out of his crease that he'll have to abandon the butterfly and attempt to skate back towards the net. That being said, I'm still an advocate of him getting more starts as we make our way into the season.
  • Pretty set of hands by Frazer McLaren on that Thornton goal. Role-reversal to be certain, and if that's something we can expect out of him going forward, this kid should be more than a serviceable replacement for Jody Shelley next season on the fourth line.
  • When game videos cut out without showing the end of the tilt I leave oh so unfulfilled. Please show the last three seconds of the game no matter how uneventful they may be. It's like watching a formulaic Hollywood movie-- you know how it's going to end, but dammit, you have to see the dog euthanised and buried in the backyard just so you can let the tears flood down and feel like a tender human being for the fourth time in your life.*

*Whatafilm.

As for tonight, the Flyers roll into town with one loss in the month of November. Ray Emery has been more imposing in net than a Hummer (the joke doesn't flow all too well but I had to work it in there somehow), while contributions from young guns like James Van Reimsdyk have helped out with Simon Gagne tending to a double hernia in his groin. And, of course, Chris Pronger makes his first appearance at The Tank since game five of last year's postseason series with Anaheim. I'm sure he will be treated to a hearty chorus of boos and other judgements concerning his moral character. That's why we love him right?

Anybody?

Prediction: Sharks win 17-1. Goals by Heatley, McGinn, Clowe, and a whole bunch of others. Matt Carle's league-leading +/- drops like a stone.

Go Sharks.

GO SHARKS!!!

Altho the game against the Preds I half listened to on the radio, this will actually be the first game of the season that I fully don’t follow. (pouts) I’ll be at my niece’s soccer game tonight and unless there is free wifi around, just don’t see a way to catch the game (plus – can’t really go to her game and be stuck on the computer now can I?)

Ever get the feeling we are on a collision course with reality? (boycott Hollywood!)

Family over the FTF?

I’m dissappointed in you ;-)

did you not know … I drove down to LA area so I can catch the Sharks vs Ducks game with my niece … so I think that balances out the family over FTF for tonight … :)

Didn’t know they had game highlights posted, so thanks for the tip. The last Marleau’s goal – could that pass by Thornton be any more perfect?

I feel like I haven’t watched a Sharks game in weeks, so they better bring it tonight.

I’ll be missing the first period, but I wouldn’t mind the Sharks scoring multiple goals in that period.

It’s about time Sharks win confidently at home, isn’t it. OK, maybe a win over Pens fit the bill, but that was a rare one this season.

Repeat, anyone?

17-1?

Awe, I was hoping for a shutout.

Warming up my booing muskulls for Pronger.

I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that.

I have Carle on my fantasy team, please spare him, just score those 17 when he’s not on the ice.

Go Sharks.

Cant watch the game though

My friend's 21st birthday is tonight

And I have a solo ticket to the game… so I’m going for just the first period and a half. Should be ample time to boo Pronger before heading to Dave & Buster’s.

Oh shit

In my defense, I’m really fucking tired today. And Truman was before Ike, and I saw a Richard Avedon picture of Eisenhower that burned through my retinas last night at SFMoMA.

Really amazing

Note to all and sundry – it closes Nov. 29th. Half price on Thursdays from 6 to 8:45pm, although next week is Thanksgiving, so it’s probably closed. Definitely worth going out of your way to see, if you have even a passing interest in art / photography.

buy tickets in advance unless your a memeber

the lines at SFMOMA are ridiculous.

Haven’t seen this exhibit but I went for Kahlo and I remember why I hate going to popular exhibitions. I finally get to see all these pieces I learned about in college and they’re blocked by the ear budded heads of a thousand blank stares. And slow moving seniors. Packs of them roving the halls of the De Young made seeing Chihuly’s work somewhat tedious.

WTC Update

The top line tonight will be Marleau-Thornton-Heatley. Holy overloading of firepower, Batman! But McLellan said that they probably won’t stay together the whole game, especially if the other lines aren’t preforming. It also shifts Pavelski back to center, which was the plan. McGinn, Ferriero, and Couture called up, as expected. Nabokov and Emery will be in goal.

Oh, and Mitchell has 2 assists, 8 PIMs, and is a -2 in his 4 games down in Worcester. But seeing how they’re currently on a 6 game losing streak, that’s not that bad.

They have literally no defensemen.

Joslin is up, Moore has been hurt (but is now back), Petrecki is having growing pains, etc. In addition, they have been without most of their top line (Couture, Vesce, and McGinn) for much of the season.

Round and Round They Go

Which Woosta kid is going to wrack up the most frequent flier miles? Who knows.

by Evilducks on Nov 20, 2009 4:00 PM PST up reply actions

Funny section of the official Sharks story
There is no question, they and the other Worcester players, will enjoy the benefits of frequent flyer programs.

"My dad is all over me to get all the miles," said Couture. "I have them from about every airline."

The frequent travel does not bother the young players too much.

"It doesn’t matter how much I fly if I’m up here playing hockey," said Couture.

Couture did relate a tale of forgetting where he was going.

"I was flying to Nashville. When the guy at the counter asked me where I was going, I stood there like a dummy for a minute," said Couture. "Sometimes you’re at the hotel and you don’t know which room you have."

The crew knows what they are here to do.

"We’re here to create energy," said Couture. "If we can create offense, we’ll create offense, but our job it so create energy."

Couture says there is one downside to the callup as he rooms with Nick Petrecki and Alex Stalock back in Worcester.

"When I got called up here, they ate all my groceries," said Couture. "I just bought more and I got called back up."

Here’s guessing Couture’s section of the refrigerator will be emptied if he returns.

They’re taking it in stride, but as much as they wouldn’t admit it, I wonder how much it effects them physically.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!

Sorry, needed to get that out of my system since I won’t be able to go see Pronger tonight. Hopefully the Sharks can get back on track after dropping the last two games of their last trip. Also, if McLaren can destroy Pronger’s face in the meantime, I would be most appreciative. Hopefully I’ll catch bits and pieces of the game on TV.

As you are extremely knowledgeable about the Russian hockey scene, Ivano, how would you compare the Russian olympic team this year to previous years, and even to the great Soviet teams? (My opinion is stated as a response to Evilducks)

Good question. I’d say that they are the best team we have had in the last 20 years, no doubt about that. It’s hard to compare them to the old USSR teams, and they have never played in the NHL, but no doubt Ovechkin’s generation is the best we have had since Fetisov’s generation.

Malkin-Kovy-Ovy line can easily rival KLM line and Bure-Fedorov-Mogilny line.

Speaking of Fetisov, he was quoted in the paper the other day as saying that this tournament is the most important tournament for Russia ever. Beating Canada in Canada – I can see why.
