[Update 10:19 AM]: According to a Worcester Sharks press release from Eric Lindquist, three players were called up today-- Ferriero, Zalewski, and Callahan. I'm assuming this means Boyle will be out tonight as he hasn't been skating since Anaheim where he was shaken up after blocking a shot. He was trying to skate it off during the entire commercial break afterwards; hopefully this is not another case akin to Pavelski (which also occurred against Anaheim-- when they can't beat you they still end up beating you apparently). While the loss of Blake hasn't hurt with Joslin's steady play, losing Boyle means the D corps will be looking mighty thin. Definitely not the best of news, and stay tuned for an update from Pollak.

Marian Hossa returns tonight for his first game in a Blackhawk uniform after recovering from shoulder surgery performed this past offseason, and will find himself placed on the first line between Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane. While they may not be quite as prolific as their San Jose counterparts (Heatley-Thornton-Marleau), it should be interesting to see how McLellan attacks them-- does he hard match big guns against big guns like he did against Anaheim early in last year's postseason series, or does he try and split the time between Malhotra/Pavelski in order to give Thornton & Co. some better looks? This is one of those games where I don't think San Jose's big guys stick together on the same line for too long-- Chicago is so deep that it may be wise to spread out your scoring, especially with Devin Setoguchi unlikely to go and Quenneville holding the Keith-Seabrook card in his back pocket. Then again, they'll probably come out and score two goals in the first and prove me wrong. I love it when they do that.

Chicago is one of the hottest teams in the league right now (8-1-1 in their last ten), but with Cristobal Huet as your starting goaltender there's no telling how long that will last. Regardless, what we've got on our hands tonight is what we always have on our hands when it comes to the Blackhawks-- a fast paced matchup that's going to result in a fair amount of odd man rushes going both ways, a lot of creativity with the puck, and one hell of a strain on your blood pressure. We mused about how a playoff series between these two teams would be a dream come true back in November of last year, and after watching every single game since then, nothing has changed that opinion. These two teams are the class of the league right now, and this game has the potential to be yet another one that sticks with you months down the road.

On a side note, Brent Sopel has been mentioned in trade rumors this week (with Toronto being the apparent front runner) which reminded me of something. Maybe I'm crazy or whatever, but is Sopel not a product of some twisted dimension where scientists combined the facial features of Jody Shelley and Teemu Selanne? The resemblance is uncanny.

8462176_medium

Have a safe trip if you're traveling today folks.

Prediction: Sharks win 5-4. Goals by Marleau, Clowe, Pavelski, Nichol, and Vlasic. Brent Sopel scores two goals and drops the gloves twice. Uncanny.

Go Sharks.

Damn I’m excited about this one, and thankfully ESPN have decided to screen it live over the pond. Here’s to the Thornton line filling it’s boots.

Hi BritShark

I’m a big Sharks fan as well and will be traveling over to London quite a bit over the coming months. Is there any place to catch games in London? I doubt it since they start so early in the morning over there.

by IsThisTheYear? on Nov 25, 2009 3:58 AM PST up reply actions

The time difference is the big killer, so finding a bar to watch games live will be almost impossible.

But there’s a pub called the Maple Leaf in Convent Garden which apparently shows hockey games which have been recorded. Might be worth checking them out, especially if our opponents are Canadian.

Anyway, hope you enjoy London even if you can’t catch the Sharks.

I got tickets to this game

for my birthday, so I’ll be coming into SJ from Chicago this afternoon and pretty much going right to the game. Oddly enough, the last game I went to at the Tank was Hawks/Sharks, OT with Thornton scoring the winner from Clowe. Oughta be fun, Go Sharks!

and I was just thinking to myself if I can find a ticket to this game … my boys spend every Thanksgiving holiday camping with their dad, so as of this afternoon I am on my own … what a better way to start off the holiday weekend than to go to a game.

Totally expensive

For three tickets in the nosebleeds (granted, on the red line), the normally $27 dollar tickets cost $75 each on StubHub. This is third tier = to put that in perspective, it would be like watching the game up in the rafters of the HP Pavilion.

You don’t even wanna know what lowers cost…. face value is bad enough, but YIKES.

Thanks folks,

birthday was actually earlier this month, so I got tickets to the Sharks/Hawks game in Chicago from my parents, and tickets to this game from my grandparents. I used to be able to go to Hawks games with my student ID for $8 an hour before the game, and my friends and I would have almost an entire section to ourselves. Now that they’re good, there are no cheap tickets to be found, which is a bummer for all of us who actually pay attention to the game but can’t afford expensive seats. There’s a chance I may get to meet some players after the game too, so I’ll take pictures if it turns out.

I’ve always loved Hawks-Sharks match up, ever since they picked up Kane and Towes. Two fast teams that love offensive hockey, good puck moving defensemen.. Everything I love about hockey.

Sharks will win 6-4 and will score a rare empty net goal in the end – I believe only the second this season. You’d think with all the wins we’ll have more of these.

THE SKY IS FALLING

Having both Boyle and Blake out was probably pretty much the nightmare scenario coming into the season. The emergence of Joslin and Demers makes it easier to swallow, but Vlasic’s inconsistency makes me worry.

This game, and the stretch we have coming up, are probably going to tell us a lot about the team. Chicago is the class of the league right now, and we are very much banged up. Win or win, we’re going to learn a lot about the “character” of the team right now.

After the Canada trip this weekend, the Sharks get to play at home quite a bit over the next month or so. That should help ease the pain of the injuries a bit, as the players who are playing will get to sleep at home and stay fresher, and we get the last change, which can help hide some things. It’s a small consolation, but whatever helps.

I really hope Boyle isn’t out too long, although Pollack was saying Blake might make it back for the Canada trip, so that could help too. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

Great News

But should Boyle really sit this out and make sure he’s healthy before going back? I don’t want him to make it worse.

I know it’s the Blackhawks, but seriously, this is only a regular season game in November.

by Evilducks on Nov 25, 2009 11:59 AM PST up reply actions

Why Boo Campbell?

I finally registered here after months of lurking to ask this question. Maybe I missed something last summer but when did all the Campbell hate start? I went to a game against the Hawks last year and was SHOCKED by the all the hate. No one sitting near me could give me a reason why half the arena was booing him. Was it because he didn’t produce in the playoffs? We’ve had a lot of players with that problem. Because he left the team? I have no issues with his leaving to be closer to family back east. Boggles my mind really because I still really like him.

by CK Sharks Fan on Nov 25, 2009 11:57 AM PST reply actions

The notion is that we paid a lot to get Campbell and he ditched us for more money in Chicago (don’t listen to the family crap, he went to the highest bidder). That usually leaves fans a bit bitter, in any city.

by Evilducks on Nov 25, 2009 12:00 PM PST up reply actions

I can understand that but he doesn’t control how much we gave Buffalo for him. And when you only play 20 games with a team you’re not exactly going to take a home town discount. Still not enough to give him the Pronger treatment in my opinion. To each his own I guess but I think it’s pretty poor form on the fans part.

by CK Sharks Fan on Nov 25, 2009 12:05 PM PST up reply actions

I see where you’re coming from, and in this world of UFA’s, I honestly don’t blame him for taking the money. But glossing it over about how it’s closer to family was a poorly disguised excuse to take the highest bid, as Evilducks mentioned above.
I’m disgruntled with him more with his play in the playoffs (see comment below). He was doing his thing in the regular season after we got him, but once the post-season started and the play got a lot rougher, he shied away from stepping his play up and he had no impact on either series vs. the Flames or the Stars.

Not to mention

Disappearing during the playoffs, and only showing up to take a lazy penalty in the 100th overtime period which led to the game winning goal being scored by Dallas.

Campbell is the complete package. Perfect for booing:

1) We gave up a lot to get him
2) Gave us flashes or brilliance
3) Disappeared when we needed him most
4) Lied about not resigning with us
5) Has ginger balls

I’d say he deserves the booing more than Pronger. All Pronger ever did was elbow people and score on the sharks. With Pronger it’s all business related, with Campbell it’s personal.

LINK

(In order to succeed) Everyone has to have a team first mentality. Take Brian Campbell when he was in San Jose. He played well but I think his first priority was his upcoming free agent status in the summer. He knew he was getting a big payday and the one thing that could have deterred that was getting injured. Had he played for the Sharks for the entire season I think he might have been more engaged from a team-first mentality. Teams that win the Stanley Cup must have everyone thinking team-first….

Took the words right out of my mouth.

Part of my Campbell hate stems from the fact that, not only did we give up Big Bear for him, but he left completely for the money. Personally, I am glad we got Dan Boyle and Rob Blake in Trades/Free Agency that summer. I would take defensemen who can play defense and score over one way Campbell.

He’s a good player for sure. But we’ve got no attachment to the guy. He’s not exactly a Jeff Friesen or an Owen Nolan that you wish nothing but the best for because they were such warriors for us, and the reality of sports business made them leave us. Brian did what Brian had to. And he’s doing it with someone else. So, screw him. Might as well boo. It’s not like we’re going to cheer for him. Whatever makes you care.

"For two days, it was not good," Boyle said. "But I’ve got about 48 hours of therapy under my belt and the adrenaline tonight I think will kick in and help out a lot."

I hope Boyler doesn’t push himself too hard tonight and cause a serious injury. I know we need him but having him rest another game doesn’t hurt when we’re 4 points up on the Blackhawks.

It takes 16 wins in the playoffs for it to matter.

After this weekend

The Sharks will only have two road games that aren’t to Phoenix or L.A. until February 4th (when they head to St. Louis to begin a 6-game road trip before the Olympic “break”).

Seriously – just 4 road games total in December, and 3 in January… and 5 of those are an hour flight away.

Indeed. After a tough beginning to our season, it will be nice to have the boys home most of the time over the holidays.

Fun trivia game

I’m terrible.. I got 34, but I would have had over 40 if I could spell the names.

by Evilducks on Nov 25, 2009 2:12 PM PST reply actions

Yeah

I only got 41, because I couldn’t spell properly either. I’m really pissed it didn’t accept Bobby Hull, because I spaced and typed “Bobbie”. Couldn’t spell Daneyko either… curses. I’m embarrassed that I got all of Buffalo’s right, but not San Jose’s (whoopsie).

I couldn’t remember Odgers.

In the heat of the moment

I typed “Friesen” and “Nolan” but completely spaced on Marleau. D’oh! There’s too much to think about…

That’s nearly unforgivable :D

Marleau was the first name I typed in. That’s epic fail! :-P

Dude...

I know… I was thinking “old time Sharks” and such. At least I didn’t type Heatley… oh wait, yes, I did, for Atlanta. ;-) Not it, however.

For the record, I then got Atlanta’s right.

I couldn’t spell it.

Kept putting Kovulchuk… stinkin’ Russians.

by Evilducks on Nov 25, 2009 2:52 PM PST up reply actions

Haha, I couldn’t remember odgers either.

I ended up with 54, but only because I got a little lucky (spelling, two players with same last names, etc.). I was most disappointed I couldn’t get all the Sharks leaders, though. Odgers…sigh.

I just retook it (I know, I know...)

And got 72. For what that’s worth…

I got 59. I did get Rob Ray by accident though. I didn’t get Odgers. I got several defensemen out of desperation too. I was very surprised to see that so many of them lead their teams in assists.

I'm not worried about tonights game..........

The Blackhawks don’t have any former Sharks that will haunt us.
Plus, I’ll be wearing my lucky Manchester United Sharks Jersey combo that is 7-0 this season. Clearly these facts will impact the game more than the players playing the actual game.

I don’t know about haunt… but Campbell was certainly a Shark.

Is this sarcasm?

Its kind of joke, in reply to that article about how former Sharks really don't haunt us

And since no Blackhawk met the criteria of that article, I decided to make a joke about it.
