November OT Thread

Good evening, FTF. Allow me first to apologize for this interruption. I do, like many of you, appreciate the comforts of every day routine- the security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition. I enjoy them as much as any bloke. But in the spirit of commemoration, thereby those important events of the past usually associated with someone's death or the end of some awful bloody struggle, a celebration of a nice holiday, I thought we could mark this November the 5th, a day that is sadly no longer remembered, by taking some time out of our daily lives to sit down and have a little chat.

There are of course those who do not want us to speak. I suspect even now, orders are being shouted into telephones, and men with guns will soon be on their way. Why? Because while the truncheon may be used in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words offer the means to meaning, and for those who will listen, the enunciation of truth. And the truth is, there is something terribly wrong with this country, isn't there? Cruelty and injustice, intolerance and oppression. And where once you had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have censors and systems of surveillance coercing your conformity and soliciting your submission.

How did this happen? Who's to blame? Well certainly there are those more responsible than others, and they will be held accountable, but again truth be told, if you're looking for the guilty, you need only look into a mirror. I know why you did it. I know you were afraid. Who wouldn't be? War, terror, disease. There were a myriad of problems which conspired to corrupt your reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear got the best of you, and in your panic you turned to the now high chancellor, Adam Sutler. He promised you order, he promised you peace, and all he demanded in return was your silent, obedient consent.

Last night I sought to end that silence. Last night I destroyed the Old Bailey, to remind this country of what it has forgotten. More than four hundred years ago a great citizen wished to embed the fifth of November forever in our memory. His hope was to remind the world that fairness, justice, and freedom are more than words, they are perspectives. So if you've seen nothing, if the crimes of this government remain unknown to you then I would suggest you allow the fifth of November to pass unmarked.

But if you see what I see, if you feel as I feel, and if you would seek as I seek, then I ask you to stand beside me one year from tonight, outside the gates of Parliament, and together we shall give them a fifth of November that shall never, ever be forgot...

This is really directed at K, but everyone can read it or ignore it at will

To expand on earlier thoughts, there’s usually a bunch of time spent sketching and trying to get ideas worked out, or looking for reference. (google image search is ftw) Also a lot of time staring at reference and trying to figure out wtf I am going to do if I have a vague idea but can’t make a sketch work.

Once all that is worked out, and sketching can take quite awhile depending on whether or not my muse is on vacation or not, I take some tracing paper, make a “clean” (read as neat) copy of it, and either scan the cleaned up version for digital coloring OR I transfer it to watercolor paper or whatever surface I’ll be working on, and then ink and paint it. (I use saral paper for this. Which basically means before I ink I end up redrawing the thing two or three times. heh)

I ink first so I always make sure I know where my lines are. Then I touch up the ink if stuff leaks over onto it.covers it up a bit. I then scan it and clean it up digitally (get rid of miss marks, crap that scanned with it because it was on the glass or if I made a mistake I fix it in photoshop).

That’s how I handle the blog stuff.

CBCSports.ca story on Mike Danton

LINK

It’s definitely worth a read.

And a bit of info on the SJ connection, for those who may be unaware:
St. Louis Blues forward Mike Danton picked up a goal in the Blues’ game four loss against the San Jose Sharks in round one. The day after the Blues were eliminated in game five, on April 17, 2004, Danton was arrested at Norman Mineta San Jose International Airport in San Jose, being a suspect in a murder for hire scheme.

I vaguely remember @ game 5 before the puck was dropped, Danton and Todd Harvey started chirping near center ice. I believe Alyn McCauley skated over to break it up. I used to have a pic of the encounter. I was always curious as to what was said. Danton skated in that game actually believing he had someone killed (the hit was planned earlier that day)

I'm going to make a suggestion here, and see how it gells

I can’t revisit the Stars/Sharks topic because it disconnects my lap top and I have to reboot, so there’s about 300 comments I can’t access. I would like for there to be a limit on the amount of high-res animated gifs/large images (which the hide feature doesn’t provide enough relief for) and/or a subsequent game topic is created once a thread reaches 350/400 comments. I’m sure I’m not the only visitor on the boards buggered by the lag time.

We got a bit out of hand last night

We should probably simply link to graphics and save the gifs for the win. My comp doesn’t have any issues, but I’d hate for anyone to be denied the pleasure of a game thread because we’re picspamming scantily clad women.

by ang6666 on Nov 13, 2009 3:11 PM PST up reply actions

Not sure about the limit stuff,

but here’s a tip for “large image” posters. In you’re picture code thing it sorta looks like this:
< randomstuff />

Between the randomstuff and /> you could put something in that says height=250 or some other number to shrink the picture.

For example you would enter in this code:

to get:

If you right click the picture and click view image you could see it’s real size.

And another thing. ALWAYS USE THE PREVIEW BUTTON. It makes sure that everything is right. Tryout the height=? thing if you really want to.

by idunno723 on Nov 13, 2009 1:46 PM PST up reply actions

But if you resize the pic in the code, it just affects the display, not the actual filesize. The entire image still loads.

I think the animated gif-fest is a rare beast, but yeah, maybe some guidelines would be in order for future threads

(But, c’mon, the Kitten Mittens gif was totally worth it)

by Section223 on Nov 13, 2009 5:16 PM PST up reply actions

I’d like to add that if you have this HUGE image that you want to post, just transload it to imageshack and resize it. That is, click the “url” option, post the image’s url in the box, check “resize,” and choose the basic size you want. Yeah, there’s less flexibility with how big the image is, but it does decrease the file size and prevents you from falling victim to the dreaded “hotlinking” image.

I’m sorry, you have it all wrong. Firefly was by far the best of his work (amazing TV, I’ve watched it 4 times and it never gets old, you just get sad towards the last few episodes that there isn’t any more) Angel’s good. Buffy was mediocre. And I only watched Dollhouse out of a feeling of obligation towards the guy for making Firefly. (It had its moments, but much of it was downright terrible. And I’m still very annoyed that it got a pickup over Terminator last year.)

But now I have a healthy appreciation of both.

However there is nothing in the world worse than a mental cat. When I first moved in to my new house, a cat from across the street ran over to greet me. It rubbed up my leg which is typical cat behaviour. The next thing I know the cat is hanging off my thigh!

Didn’t everyone on the Sens score against the Pens tonight?

I think even LeClaire did. I just wanted to point it out as this is the OT thread, and my love Cheech still burns, only with the intensity of 500 white hot suns instead of 1000.

I don’t really like Cheech, and I don’t think I ever did.

Oh, I thought you were serious, as the internets r srs business. That, and you don’t have any Cheechoo related pun in your name.

I finally went to Wingstop today

Went to the one on Curtner, in that huge shopping center where the GE factory used to be. Let me just say that while I love the fries, I’d still take SmokeEaters/University Chicken as far a chicken goes. I will give Wingstop credit though – the batter on my boneless wings stayed crunchy even when covered in the sauce (in my case, BBQ), which is an improvement over SE’s batter pretty much falling off when covered in hot sauce.

I'm the only person I know

Who prefers Wing Stop.

It’s the variety of flavors that does it for me. Also, I just don’t dig BBQ all that much, so I love the cajun, the garlic parmesan and the lemon pepper.

funny, the majority of people i know prefer Wingstop

Personally, I think it does some things well. Some things meh. I particularly enjoy the garlic parmesan.

If I wanted buffalo wings though, yeah, I’d rather go to Cluck U (I still have a hard time calling it anything else).

For the non-buffalo hot wings, I like Hooters. And yes, I actually enjoy their wings. I’m not gonna complain about the ambiance though.

It's only a slight prefrerence

SE is my preference simply because of the bigger portions they serve vs. Wingstop. They’re both well-cooked chicken but the bigger pieces wins out over the neater food.

This got me thinking

Anyone been to Sam’s BBQ on Bascom? Damn that place is good.
I’ve never been to Henry’s Hi-Life, so if anyone’s been to both, I’d like to know how they stack up against each other.
