Anytime the defending champs roll into town you gotta take notice.  Enter it on the ol' palm pilot and settle in.

Then the day comes and you realize both squads are hurting more than John Goodman at an all you can eat buffet. Setoguchi, Pavelski, Blake, Malkin, Gonchar. Some big-time cogs in the lineup right there. Chances are your mother will call you on the phone and say she heard it's a statement game for the team, or something of that sort. Remind you not to miss church in the morning and chastise you for leaving the seat up.

But at the end of the day, what we've got here is two points on the table against an Eastern Conference team we play once a season. Doesn't mean it's not a big game, doesn't mean we shouldn't get a little chubs when 6:30 rolls around. It just means that two points are the only thing that matters tonight. If the Sharks win, don't make out with your sister. If the Sharks lose, don't jump off the Golden Gate. We're in for a long road if we start flying off the handle 17 games in. The performance on Thursday was the best they've looked in Joe Louis for years, and if not for a pocketed whistle we're sitting with an extra point in the bag. No excuses, but that's a fact. Mark it down as such and move on.

On a relevant side note, how bad does Thomas Greiss feel right now? He puts up a 37 save performance in Philadelphia and hasn't seen the light of day since. With Nabokov playing two back to backs that went to the skills competition and then traveling halfway across the country, does anyone else think it would be a good idea to give him the keys to the car tonight? I understand that a Saturday night home game against the defending champions is probably a good way to destroy his career if he lets in a few softies (hell, I remember sitting at the Vancouver preseason game and people were booing him), but McLellan had to have seen this as a possible outcome. I'm sure the team didn't even come close to touching the ice yesterday and probably just watched some video, but damn-- one start for the backup in seventeen games during an Olympic year when Nabokov is one of the favorites (if not the favorite) to start for Team Russia? Questionable.

Chris Kunitz waddles his way back to The Tank tonight. Does anyone remember that time he went Chuck Norris on Cheech's head two years ago in the waning seconds of the third period when the Sharks had the game in the bag? Pretty sure the Ducks hadn't even registered a shot in the third at that point. At any rate, there's one guy who should get a nice chorus of boos tonight.

Prediction: Sharks win 3-1. Goals by Boyle, Heatley, and Marleau.

Go Sharks.

seriously though… Crosby has been red hot lately, but with Malkin out I don’t expect he will get very far by Joe tonight. The way Marleau has been playing on home ice I think patty will get a star…

uh

Crosby has been sad lately not red hot.
Rumour has it he may be injured too but not badly enough to miss games.

Yeah, I know that he did. However, Randy and Drew were talking after the game, saying that he looked hurt. Hope it’s minor.

Skating after an injury doesn’t mean it’s not bad, either. Just ask Joe Pavs.

Haha, you keep playing this Heatley is injured angle. He got lit up along the boards and was probably just shaken up, maybe dealing with a light concussion.

I’m not sure what Randy and Drew said, but it’s obviously something minor if anything at all. He’ll be out there tonight.

Here’s a video of the Kunitz hit, taken from the stands, complete with an epic “DUCKS SUCK” chant. Here’s a better view of the hit taken from the broadcast.

Cheech may not be with the team anymore, but Chris Kunitz is still a dirty player who deserved to be booed, Crankshafted, and Staubtized.

I’d like to see more of Greiss too, but there is no longer any doubt that Nabby earned his starts now. I’d play him tonight and rest him the next game. I think mentally it’s important for Nabby to win the game like tonight’s, especially if my some luck we’ll be facing Penguins again this season.

By the way, some good stuff in Nabby’s interview I dug up to Russian newspaper where he talks about that concept of earning his starts and what that means to him. We’ll publish it tomorrow, I think.

by Ivano M on Nov 7, 2009 10:52 AM PST reply actions

Griess will get a start someday, I assume. But I’ll agree with you, Nabby should start tonight, and then give Griess the start on Tuesday against Nashville. Gries definately proved he deserves some more looks with his play against Philly, and I think he’ll get them. Probably not any more than Boucher got when Nabby was healthy, though.

Stalock

So, I was reading the Sharkspage recap of the last WorSharks game (2-1 shootout win) against the Monarchs. Apparently Stalock is a very animated goalie because I’ve never even heard of anything like this being done:

Most hockey fans are familiar with the so called “Sean Avery rule”, the rule that prevents an offensive player from facing the goaltender in an attempt to screen him. Well, we may eventually hear of the “Alex Stalock rule”, as several times during the game Stalock was making jumping jack like motions and waving his arms while standing in the crease in front of fore-checkers standing in front of him as Worcester defenders stood behind the net with the puck. It didn’t appear to be very effective, but it was humorous to watch.

Nabby & Burning Out Players During The Season

Great insight into the fact that for some stupid reason the Sharks coaches want to play this guy 75 games..You can’t put all the blame on the players for the choke jobs in the playoffs..

DW addressed all of our other issues in the off season, but getting a backup goalie that the coaches will trust and play at least 25 to 30 games, to give Nabby some chance of being a little fresh for the grind of the playoffs..

GET A CLUE SHARKS FRONT OFFICE AND STOP BURNING OUT THE PLAYERS DURING THE SEASON..

THE SEASON DOESN’T MEAN CRAP UNLESS YOU MISS THE PLAYOFFS..

Play Greiss, before we end up with another first round flameout..

Pensburgh misinformation

Has anyone else taken a look at the post Pensburgh put up about this game. What bugged me the most was how they mentioned to look out for Seto. Uh…. last time I check Seto’s been out for a while and isn’t coming back soon. Reporting FAIL. The east coast just doesn’t know anything. They aren’t the only team dealing with injuries.

by TheRobberBaron on Nov 7, 2009 2:30 PM PST reply actions

doesn't surprise me

Their writers have made several errors. Big Pens fan, but I hate the writing on Pensburgh. Pens Blog is far superior.

“Through four seasons now they’ve [Crosby and Ovechkin] won three scoring titles (with Evgeni Malkin, the Russian Penguin alway in the background getting the fourth).” http://www.pensburgh.com/2009/9/1/1010447/sidney-crosby-vs-alex-ovechkin#20559369

I merely pointed out that Jumbo won the 06 scoring title and was subsequently ignored. It still hasn’t been corrected.

One of my buddies saw Clowe and Malkin together at CB Hannegins last night.

He said that Clowe came alone and that Malkin was being escorted by what looked like a body guard.

I shouldn't have said anything.

For what’s it worth, I was watching the SJ/Det game the other night and really think the refs botched that call where Nabokov clearly froze the puck under his pad. Doesn’t mean I want your prediction to be right tonight though, but there’s a good chance it will be.

Noted Penguins injuries in addition to Malkin/Gonchar: Tyler Kennedy and Alex Goligoski. Pens just called up a 7th d-man from the minors in case GoGo is a NoGo tonight (see what I did there?). Technically, Deryk Engelland is more like an 8th defenseman, since Martini Skoula has been logging more minutes in the wake of Gonchar’s injury.
