So, Plank and I got our game day wires crossed, and the story got posted a little late. So sue me/us/whatever. Our lawyer will rip you apart.
However, as opposed to just mailing it in, I've got some things that I was going to use for a piece on Sunday that I'll throw into the mix here.
First off, you can't ignore the media generated significance of a game against two non-division, non-conference, non-rival teams. Even though these two squads have relatively no past when it comes to on ice activity, the Heatley-gate saga manufactured enough drama to make this seem like a game with the importance of a seventh tilt in a playoff series.
Granted, there will more than likely be some bad blood coming from the Senators squad, who will want to show that they don't need Heatley to succeed. So far, they've done a good job of that... posting 30 points on the year and holding down the seventh playoff seed in the Eastern Conference.
Problem is, most of that success is independent of the pieces that the Senators acquired in exchange for Heatley. Although Milan Michalek has gotten hot of late and leads the Senators with 13 goals (Czech him out!), Jonathan Cheecoo has struggled, posting only 4 points in 24 games with his new team. Regardless, it will be nice to see Cheech back at HP Pavilion, but this time I won't necessarily be rooting for him. Hell, he can score a goal once the Sharks are up six. Least we can do for the guy.
The Senators are also trying to get past an injury to Pascal Leclaire, their starting goaltender, who took a puck to the face while sitting on the bench during an off night. Ouch. Brian Elliot has filled in admirably in relief, putting up better numbers than Leclaire through 10 games.
The Senators won't be the only ones with something to prove, though. Dany Heatley is going to want to come up big tonight, I can just feel it. After being held goaless for three straight, I'm thinking he's going to put some in the back of the net.
It goes without saying that I think our odds of winning this quasi-rivalry game are quite good.
Moving past tonight's match-up, (and regarding McGinn's recent trip back to Worcester) I want to highlight a quote made by Mike Ricci at this past summer's State of the Sharks concerning the team's toughness, grit, and commitment in the playoffs. The quote is as follows:
"Our kids in Worcester have played like champions and they will fight guys for jobs. The probably weren’t ready, but now they probably are ready to battle our guys for positions. They will find it on the opening day of camp when someone is ready to take their job. The first time I went to Worcester, I told them they had a great attitude. Our coaches were just trying to get enough healthy guys in the lineup and there was (little) competition and I think that hurt us." - Mike Ricci
It certainly seams that the Sharks organization took that philosophy to heart, injecting the team with different combinations of young blood as the season has progressed. Jason Demers, Derek Joslin, Joe Callahan, Logan Couture, Jamie McGinn, Benn Ferriero, Frazier McLaren, Ryan Vesce, and Stephen Zalewski (pretty sick how I remembered the forwards almost alphabetically, accidentally) have all gotten their shot at the NHL level. This has created some competition on the lower lines, but I thing McLellan and Wilson might be missing the point of the strategy.
It's great that these guys are competing for spots on the NHL team. What would be better, is if the competition extended up to where it really matters. McGinn has played admirably all year, and is a real spark on the third line. He should have been challenging Clowe for his spot on the second while Clowe was struggling, regardless of any of the BS arguments concerning chemistry, pay, etc. He's played well enough to earn that spot.
I understand that there are cap reasons involved with the bringing up and sending down of a player. I get it. However, if McGinn isn't back up by tonight's game, I think the problem is deeper than that. You can only light a fire under someone's ass so many times before it's ineffective, and Jamie is a guy who (in my opinion) needed no extra motivation. He's playing out of his mind.
If Jamie is back tonight this all may be moot, but I think it's still applicable going forward. The competition has to extend throughout the team to the top players, or else you aren't getting the most out of your squad.
Prediction: Sharks win 7-1. Goals by McGinn x3, Heatley x3, and Marleau, who assists on all 7 (yes, even his own) goals. Cheechoo rips a one timer from between the circles top shelf on the power play.
Go Sharks.

It is tremendously important that Joe Thornton get lots of points for my fantasy team, and it’s crucial to my well being that Ottawa loses and looks stupid in the Dany Heatley deal.
What I’m saying is that a Heatley hat trick with Thornton dishing would make me a happy man.

Hope the old guys get cheered
Neither of them wanted to leave, and while Michalek was a disappointment to us, a 60pt 2nd line forward is not bad for most teams.
As a newly minted lawyer (just found out I passed the bar last friday), I hope to be doing some ripping myself soon…
Congrats on passing the bar!

Congratulations!
Cal Bar I presume? Which school did you go to if you don’t mind me asking?

Joe Pavelski: Yeah, definitely.
I went to the University of San Francisco
And yup, Cal Bar. It was not going to be a happy holidays if I had to take that sucker again. 3 days of testing, 6 hours each day is brutal! My “condensed” book of all the law that could appear on the exam was like a thousand pages. Just glad I don’t have to do that again!
Congrats!!!

Ballard didn’t notice he was hurt.
Ballard is going to be eating crow in that locker room for years to come if he sticks around. Apparently Vokoun claims to be over it, but you better believe meals are on Ballard for a while.
yeah. If you watch it’s pretty clear Ballard had NO idea he’d hit Vokoun. He probably didn’t find out until he got back to the bench and was told. At that point I suspect all he wanted to do was curl up into a ball and hide in the locker room.

What is the Blue Book value on a 30 year old D-man with 31 games in the NHL?
Here's to the second round!
Now it’s being reported he was picked up off of waivers.
But I do have to add a caveat – the information I’m getting is via HF Boards, through posters who heard it on the radio. And while it is pretty reliable (their “Confirmed trade with link” tag is probably 97% correct), sometimes the sources they get it from have false information.

Right I was just thinking if you needed a guy in a pinch…
I would almost rather see a reasonably talented guy out of position than an old dog that can’t stick in the bigs.
Here's to the second round!
Leach is 30. He was drafted a year after Thornton and Marleau. I’m sorry, but that’s not old.
And what a few Habs fans have said:
Leach was pretty solid and wasn’t as slow as some Devil fans had warned us. If we didn’t have so many defensemen, I’d take him as a 6th or 7th guy. Doesn’t do anything noticeable, but that was a good thing (the Habs were playing like crap). He only played a few games though, so it’s hard to get a proper analysis on him.
Solid pick up by the Sharks, Leach didn’t look out of place at all in his short stay in Montreal.

For a defenseman, not being noticeable is a good thing. It means that they don’t make stupid mistakes and diffuse situations before they become dangerous.
Remember, one of Vlasic’s touted aspects of his game is that you never notice him despite having loads of ice time because he’s so effective at shutting down forwards.

He’s doing alright in the KHL, playing every game, and clocking in average of 15 minutes, something he wouldn’t likely record in the NHL. Plus, he’s getting paid a lot more.
According to Russian press, it wasn’t his wife, it was little money that Rangers offered him that got him to bolt for KHL.
That’s good at least, though it makes me wonder about what the GM of the Rangers was talking about in relation to him then.

This is far and away beyond anything remotely close that other teams are doing. Even east coast teams where the flight isn’t nearly as brutal (assuming the kids actually make it to woosta or if they have to take a flight back once they hit a stop along the way.)
Look at some teams that have had some real injury issues this year:
Edmonton:
http://www.capgeek.com/tracker/team_transactions.php?Team=1
Colorado:
http://www.capgeek.com/tracker/team_transactions.php?Team=12
Montreal:
http://www.capgeek.com/tracker/team_transactions.php?Team=2
These are teams leading the league in man games lost to injury and their AHL shuffling isn’t even half of what we’ve done, and we’re a healthy team.
I’m really getting irritated by it all.
What a mess.
I feel bad for the kids. You can have a good game, then end up in Worcester the next night, only to come back to San Jose the next day. When do these kids sleep or eat?
On the plane? I never have any problem sleeping on a plane. They’re called narcotics, look em up.
CUIDADO: Estoy Borracho!
So what does this new pick up means for Demers?
Probably not a very good news. Damn – and I traded him for Clowe in the FTF fantasy league.
He’s been alright, although slipping a bit defensively. It’s offensively that I felt he was doing good, especially on the PP.
We get one rookie break into the lineup, he has couple of bad games and baam – on the plane he goes. Vlasic would never break into lineup if that’s what they were doing back then, and neither would Pavs or Mitchell or Bernier..
I don’t know if I’d want to be in the Sharks development system the way they’re running things now.
Imagine if that’s how they treated Filatov. He’d probably bolted for KHL much sooner than he did, where he, by the way, was just named player of the week, after averaging 2 points a game in his first games back.
and I traded him for Clowe in the FTF fantasy league.
yeah, about that, i had to figure that Clowe would turn it around. i still think that he could spot in for Joslin if he can’t keep up.
Puck Daddy: You would definitely hate the Ducks more than you'd hate the Kings, right?
Joe Pavelski: Yeah, definitely.
On a slightly unrelated note...
Interesting piece in the Ottawa Sun today about the pending arbitration by the Sens to not only recoup that $4 million bonus, but also hit Heater for “damages” done to the club. The latter is pretty unprecedented, and frankly I think Melnyk’s got his work cut out for him if he aims to definitively correlate Heater’s trade demands and subsequent departure with decreased season ticket sales and attendance. These events coincided with a bit of an economic downturn, to say the least. I’d peg Melnyk’s chances at next to zero.

Well, let’s clarify some facts here. he did score two goals for the Sharks and two goals against the Sharks, so he’s even. Yes, the glove of doom was there, but he wasn’t as bad a Huskins has been recently when he’s choking up pucks like it’s a street hockey, and is never in position, like he’s Errorhoff.
If Huskins was never signed, we’d likely be undefeated right now, and ranked right up there with Florida and Texas, waiting for BCS championship game. Oh wait, wrong site.
How’s the football mood at USC these days?
True, but I’m including the season before last as well, where he was considerably worse. He did improve a lot, I’ll give him that.
And while the mood probably isn’t as high as it would be if there was the BCS championship or Rose Bowl in our futures, USC did just beat UCLA by a significant amount on Saturday. Everyone’s happy about that, and Pete Carroll restored his status as God (not that it ever really was in question).

UCLA started it
They were the ones who called a timeout with less than a minute left, two touchdowns down, and without possession of the ball. They obviously still wanted to play, so Pete Carroll responded by running a play instead of having Matt Barkley take a knee, like he was doing before the timeout. It just so happened that UCLA decided to stop playing defense and so USC scored a touchdown.
Oh, and he didn’t say anything about Stanford running up the score, just that it was in their right as a team to do so. I’m not sure about you, but I don’t really consider that hypocritical.

This.
I thought it was hilareous when USC threw that bomb after UCLA called that unnecessary time out. And I hate USC! It was the right call. Can’t let people get away with their little shenanigans.

I have a Semenov t-shirt.
It should be mentioned that it was on clearance and for only five bucks but still…

Still can’t believe you didn’t give more of a nod to Cheech— it’s your nomiker bruva.
And don’t try and hop on the McGinn bandwagon this late in the game. He’s my horse, and I intend to defend him as such. Yes I am protective.

I made a flipping YouTube video tribute for him… I think I’ve done plenty.
And on McGinn, you’re getting a bit protective my man. We should be able to at least TALK about him. I’m not professing my undying love to him or anything.
