The Worcester Shuttle Rolls Along

As David Pollak reported yesterday, Jamie McGinn and Frazer McLaren were sent down to Worcester for what seems like the thirty seventh time this season. The basis behind this move, and the ones preceding it, lie in San Jose's tight fit under the $58.6 million dollar salary cap-- those eying the team with even a cursory glance are well aware of the ramifications of dancing with the salary ceiling, as it played a part in the trade of defenseman Christian Ehrhoff earlier this summer.

Salary cap space is accrued on a day by day basis in the NHL. Each day the Sharks rid themselves of unneeded contracts on the big club, the more room they have to make a deal before the March 3rd trade deadline in 2010. It's a sound strategy from that standpoint, but the physical toll it takes on players as they jump from coast to coast on a bi-weekly basis will likely increase exponentially as the season drags along.

With that in mind:

I think now is the perfect time to utilize the Worcester Shuttle. I'm not talking about it's creepy uncle the Worcester Salary Shuffle, I'm talking about the honest and pure Worcester "I Run Off Results" Shuttle. Logan Couture has been tearing it up in the AHL this season and leads the team in goals. Benn Ferriero had a two goal game against Manchester earlier this month and has eight points in ten games. Give the team a little kick in the pants and bring in some forwards who a) have been up here for an extended period of time this season b) are familiar with their role on this team and c) will provide a scoring threat.

- "Back To The Grindstone"

San Jose's bottom six once again drew a blank against the Anaheim Ducks, making that one goal from the lower lines in the last six games. The role of these forwards extends far beyond scoring goals of course, and the defensive/grit aspects of Mitchell's, Malhotra's, Nichol's, and Ortmeyer's game brings a lot of value to the San Jose Sharks as a whole. These should not be cast aside as unimportant.

That being said, the reliance on the team's top line for goal scoring is troubling. Marleau and Heatley have accounted for roughly 40% of the team's goal output this season; when they fail to score the team drops to an unimpressive 2-4-2 [link]. It's an issue that needs to be addressed, and without the aforementioned salary cap space, it's an issue that will have to be taken care of in-house.

Here's a short term solution that potentially kills two birds with one stone.

When a player is constantly riding the Worcester Shuttle, he misses out on practice time with the same roster that he plays games with. For example, McGinn was sent down to Worcester yesterday, and will not see his teammates again before lacing up the skates on Monday against the Dallas Stars. That makes it harder for a player to improve his skills, as well as establish and/or improve chemistry with his linemates. Those riding the shuttle have no advantage over their peers in Worcester other than the fact they accrue valuable NHL experience in games with San Jose.

The advantage those in Worcester have over their peers riding the shuttle however, is a lack of cross-country flights, as well as increased ice time in practice and games. While the AHL does not keep track of TOI on their official stats, one could safely assume that they will be getting a bump of at least five shifts when playing in the minors-- they're the cream of the crop on the minor league affiliate, which is the reason they are playing with San Jose in the first place.

In order to reduce effects of riding the Worcester Shuttle takes on the relevant parties, I propose a rotating cast of players to make the trek in three-four game increments. With San Jose struggling for output right now in regards to their lower lines, reduced ice time (both in practice and in games) for those shuttle bound vagabonds, and the physical toll it takes on players, this seems like a perfect time in the season to get back to the "running off results" ideals GM Doug Wilson proposed at the beginning of the season. Keep in mind that this is a short term solution-- following the March 3rd trade deadline, the shuttle will no longer provide any salary cap benefits, allowing San Jose to avoid unneeded cross-country travel and begin to solidify their playoff roster.

If a player shoots the lights out at the NHL level, he would be rewarded with a longer stay than the three-four games. Worcester Sharks play by play commentator Eric Lindquist told Fear The Fin in October that the shuttle keeps players hungry-- "They know that they are all just a real good stretch of games away from playing in the NHL." San Jose has gotten away from that lately, and it's an aspect of roster management I think they should pursue once again.

Star-divide

Here are the daily cap hits for candidates who would be making the trek:

  • Logan Couture, $6,434
  • Jamie McGinn, $5,164
  • Steven Zalewski, $3,420
  • Benn Ferriero, $3,290
  • Brandon Mashinter, $2,901
  • Ryan Vesce, $2,850
  • Frazer McLaren, $2,815

San Jose is saturated with centers right now, making Couture an unlikely call up barring injury. While I prefer McLaren over both Staubitz and Shelley, the return from injury for both of those players in the near future unfortunately makes him the odd man out on the fourth line.

When looking at the list, you have to figure this rotation would run pretty much through Ferriero and McGinn. I'm a huge fan of Jamie, and believe that he's going to be a staple on that third line after March 3rd, but reducing his travel (as well as saving a little coin with Ferriero's daily cap hit) is an enticing opportunity that I think should be explored.

At the end of the day what this team does in the playoffs is the ultimate measuring stick of a successful campaign. By spreading out the travel burden, and still remaining competitive, you put yourself in the best position to do so.

Go Sharks.

Great, article Plank.

Besides that snipe from Malhotra against the Kings, the lower lines have not done much. That being said, I thought the third line had a really good game Thursday, but just didn’t get rewarded on the scoresheet.

March 3rd

I’m REALLY hoping we have a more “set” 3rd and 4th line after the trade deadline.

A third of Malhotra, Nichol, Ortmeyer would suit me just fine. A fourth of McLaren Mitchell McGinn is also somewhat appealing, especially given how much we can use the pairings of Nichol Ortmeyer and Mitchell Malhotra on the PK.

I know Wilson is angling for cap space, but we have to give this lineup all the chance in the world to succeed.

We use the “excuse” that all the injuries late in the season made lines 3 and 4 very cold, and ultimately ineffective in the last post season. We’re doing the same thing to ourselves VOLUNTARILY this season. We’re putting an awful lot of pressure on those lines to gel in a very short amount of time. I’m not a fan of that.

As construed right now, I have serious doubts about our blue line taking us anywhere deep in the post season. If the Woostah Shuttle is what it’s going to take to fix that, I guess that has to be okay, but this gamble HAS to work.

Very well said.

I'm not sure I'm a big fan of the Worcester Shuttle

Your proposal is, basically, to run a shuttle between Ferriero and McGinn, swapping who’s coming up to cut down on the same person flying back and forth across country all the time, unless that person is playing well, and then they should stay up? This seems like an error to me. I think the team would be better served by having a constant lineup (barring injury, which always jumbles things up).

McGinn has shows a lot of energy and a decent shot since being up. I think he would actually benefit more from NHL practice time with his linemates than decreased NHL time by rotating Ferriero in. Ultimately, I’d prefer the team took the opposite strategy and just kept McGinn up all the time. We’re under the cap, albeit barely. Just let this roster practice together, grow together, and work together. It’s talented enough as it is to have playoff success, we don’t need any trade deadline addition. Those have been mostly not helpful towards our goal in the past anyways. New players need time to adjust to the system and their new teammates. If we had a solid, unchanging 3rd and 4th line, I think they’d be much more productive as they got a chance to get comfortable with one another.

I agree that we haven’t been getting our lower line scoring lately. It’s a big reason why we’ve been losing. But I don’t think thats a roster problem, or something that can really be helped by the Shuttle. Setoguci’s been hurt and then ice cold since coming back. Pavelski has been hurt, and then is only just recently starting to pick it up again. Mitchell’s been hurt, but had 10 goals his rookie year, and can score goals. They just need more time to get their legs under them. We can’t really expect them to jump in and produce like we expect them to immediately after so much time off.

Also, McGinn can score goals. Malhotra can score goals. Clowe has been picking it up. Boyle’s still been an assist machine, even if his shot’s been off. Nichol and Ortmeyer have chipped in here and there. When Marleau was on the second line, and Seto was on the first line (and healthy), we were seeing at least two lines of scoring. The Sharks have the pieces in place to have a deep scoring team. Which makes the point that we have to address our scoring depth in house fine, since we have the pieces to do so!

As for the playoffs, yes, you need other lines than your top to step up and score goals, but many times, the teams that do well usually get some unsung hero scoring goals for them in the playoffs who wasn’t scoring in the regular season. Moen for Anaheim in 07 (7 goals after only 11 in the reg season…which even that was high for him), Talbot for Pitt in 09 (8 goals after only 12 in the reg season). The point being, teams need secondary scoring to come through in the playoffs to be successful. But you really can’t predict who’s going to come through. The Sharks have enough players that are at least capable of having that kind of breakout, that I’m not too worried. They just have to produce.

As mentioned in the article

My biggest issue with the Worcester shuttle is the chemistry that is lost by not having rookies get proper practices with the big team.

I’ve seen two sides of McLaren, the side that whiffs on pucks and the side that cycles the puck well and keeps the puck deep in the offensive zone. I wonder how much his game would improve if he had better opportunities to practice with the big team? It would definitely make it easier to mix and match lower line combos.

McLaren has a huge upside. One, He’s massive! And whilst he isnt quite filling his frame out yet, in a couple of years he will be a beast.
Two, he handles the puck better than Shelley.

My suggestion is this: Cycle who stays up and who is sent down. By that I mean if we have three call ups and we need cap space, send two down between games and keep one up to practice with the team.

done got learnt

Very good article, assuming you’re not making this stuff up. ;-) I had wondered why the salary cap/shuttle topic was brought up together. I gathered it was something to that effect but it’s nice to see it ‘splained out in real peepullz-speak. I think if I had to make a call I’d try and develop what we have by letting them play and practice with one another rather than dick around with shuttling in order to save room for a possible trade.

I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that.

Very good read

Still, none of this will happen because the team is looking to bleed off as much salary as possible to the minors at any given moment.

I like the positive thinking though.

Interesting

I was wondering why it seemed like McGinn especially kept going up and down between San Jose and Worcester like a yo-yo.

By the way I got to see McGinn and Couture play with their junior team, the Ottawa 67s, quite a bit in the 06-07 season. I liked both their games, more so in McGinn’s case. I think both could be good players, but to me McGinn seems to have a better mix of grit and checking ability along with goal scoring potential.
