He probably watched the last Blackhawk’s game and we know how that turned out.

I only mention it because Austyn Carta-Samuels went to my high school. It was weird watching him on ESPN because just last year I was watching him play at San Jose City College.

Hey, someone yelled at me in another post, but some advice please.
I teach skating down here in AZ ( from San Jose, originally). One of my students bought me my brass ring, a Sharks 3rd. Thing is, it has flaws. 1 – It’s a Cheechoo jersey. I would be happy to rock the Cheech’s number and name, but I think they got it on ebay, which brings me to point 2) – The number on the chest is the same size as the arm numbers. Therefore, there is an exceptionally large 14 taking over the front of the jersey. Would it be bad if I wanted to turn it into a Thornton jersey, with appropriately sized digits?

Huet sucks.

No, he was awesome. He was the biggest reason we made the playoffs (not named Ovechkin). Total stud down the stretch (like 12-1 in his last 13 starts) but then he was only average in the playoffs. We needed him to steal a game or two and he couldn’t.
But the reason I don’t like him is how he negotiated in the off-season. He told GMGM he wanted 5 million for 3 years, and GMGM offered it. Then he tried to increase his demand, then tried to force GMGM into a bidding war with CHI. Eff that.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Part of me can understand where Huet was coming from. He’s not elite, and this was probably his last chance to get a huge contract. But if that’s what you’re thinking just say that. Don’t pretend you want to come back, quote a price, then try to start a bidding war when the GM matches your quote (before the FA period started). I would have had more respect if he just said “I’m going to free agency and I’m going to see what’s out there” instead of dicking us around.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Yeah
kind of the opposite of what happened with Heatley, in a strange way.

true
I was sure that was going to be a disaster. Working out well for ya so far tho
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
So far it's fantastic
I think the general consensus (at least on this site) was that we were going to keep an open mind and not judge him based on his past or reputation. I read a great article (ESPN maybe?) about how Ottawa’s management team tried to force a trade Heatley was up-front about not wanting, making him look like the bad guy. Two sides to every story, right?
"Fear the Fin: where some fans chose to swathe themselves in baseless optimism all season long." -CTGray
by workthecycle on Dec 22, 2009 6:29 PM PST up reply actions
Definitely
And for me it’s also real important to know who actually leaked the trade request. I don’t think Heater went directly to the media so if OTT was the one that leaked it then they are the assholes and paid the price for it.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
I don't doubt management leaked it in an effort to paint him as the bad guy
That being said, I was opposed to his coming here because of the way he was leaving, and the prior departure in Atlanta.
His play has swayed my opinion in his favor.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
The Atlanta thing
was due to the emotional baggage he had from the car accident. He needed a change of scenery
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
I know
Still, given how the team, management AND the family of Dan Snyder went to bat for him, I think he could have stuck it out there. Imagine that team NOW with Kovalchuk AND Heatley.
Their loss, our eventual gain.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Yeah, goals will do that
I had no problem with him leaving ATL. It was a bad situation and he needed a fresh start. But demanding a trade after signing a long term contract with a NMC rubbed me the wrong way. He seems like he’s been a good citizen in SJS and I still don’t hold him solely responsible for the OTT meltdown so he’s fine with me.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Heard that too
it was mostly the $4 mil roster bonus that was due to him that no one wanted to pay so they tried to force a trade before that bill. Totally blame the Sens for that one
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Yup
Mishandled completely. You can’t let the whole league know you have to trade the guy, then expect to use any leverage. Then add on top of that the 4 mill bonus and you knew they weren’t going to get value back. I have no love for OTT at all so I don’t mind one bit.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
No one I know has any love for Ottawa
They’re just not very lovable
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Which is odd
because it’s not like they’ve been breaking hearts all over the league. I can’t think of a single team that has repeatedly had their post-season dreams crushed by OTT.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Very few people HATE them
Maple Leafs and Sabres maybe. But that’s part of the thing with them. No one cares strongly about them. They’re just kinda there and kinda annoying.
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
could be worse
you could be the team that got him
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
haha
Exactly. CHI is so stupid, but they saved GMGM from himself. I’d rather have Theo for cheaper and two fewer years. He’s gone after this season, Huet is blowing up their salary cap for the next two years. I hope we get one of the choice pieces CHI has to sell off to keep their team together.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
perspective is everything
this year is better. not spending $12 mil in net
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
True. And Huet hasn’t been a disaster, but he’s still overpaid.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
no he hasn't
I like how he’s been playing for the past couple months, but your right, that $5 mil cap hit stings. But like I said, I think we needed to overpay to get someone here at that point.
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Yup
Or just wait another year or two for the young guys to develop and make the team attractive, but that patience is much easier said than done.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
the situation was, well bad
new ownership knew they had to move quick to take advantage of $Bill passing to get the fans back. And it’s not like that was the worst contract that off-season.
$7 mil for Campbell? Yikes!
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Yeah exactly. You knew Rocky wanted to get things going again, and he was just a bit impatient IMO. With the young skill in the system he didn’t need to go all in so soon. But last year they went to the WCF and they are a WC front-runner this year, so you can’t say it was completely wrong.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
it's kinda good
Huet has done well, Campbell is playing some great hockey and the team was able to lock up the core for at least 5 years. Things are looking good.
Sure we will miss players like Sharp, Versteeg, Buff and others but I’d rather keep Hossa, Toews, Kane, Campbell and Keith and plug-in around them
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Sharp and Versteeg are the guys I really want. If Seabrook or Barker get shopped I’d jump in for them as well. Campbell isn’t a terrible player, when you ignore his cap hit. There are plenty of defensive studs on CHI so Campbell doesn’t have to be the 1D, he can be a PP specialist and be protected a little more. But the term is going to hurt once those guys are off their ELC’s.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
talk is we're keeping Seabs
Sharp is the target of every trade rumor along with Sopel (please God, please)
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Well you guys want to move Sopel, nobody really wants him. You’ll eventually be able to move him for a bag of pucks.
Everyone thinks CHI is going to be over a barrel after his season but I disagree. They definitely have to move someone, but they have so many quality players on reasonable contracts that they won’t be forced into any one specific deal. They’ll shop like 4-5 guys and just wait for the best deal. I have a feeling they’ll be alright, even if they take a little bit of a short-term hit in their talent.
How close is Beach to being ready?
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Maybe next year
He has some anger issues tho
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
That's not always a bad thing
And CHI better keep Seabrook. Guy is a stud. The Seabrook the Caps drafted… not so much.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Seabs - Keith
Good enough for Team Canada considering taking them as a pair
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Yeah, all you need to know pretty much.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
and Hjalmerson
looking damm good too. Playing with Soupy and all
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Don’t know much about him, but he’s seem pretty decent when I’ve watched CHI. Is he young and up and coming?
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
drafted 2005
Kid is growing by leaps and bounds. We call him Hammer and is def a fan fav. Playing 20 min a game on NHLs best defence
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
and at that point
we kinda needed to overspend to get the FAs. CHI was not a place felt good about coming to
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
I can relate to that.
The Caps had to do the same thing and they are still waiting for those contracts to clear. Tom Poti, Nylander, Pothier, Chris Clark. Several of our pre-Ovechkin veterans are making more than they probably should be making.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Nylander
ahh the memories…
"I fornicate and play hockey, cause ther're the 2 most fun things in cold weather"
Thank god they are memories now
He’s basically gone. Off the cap for this year, no NMC next year so we’ll bury him in the minors if we have to. Ideally he’ll play so well in Grand Rapids that someone actually wants him and just trades us a bag of pucks or a 7th round pick for him. Save us the head ache.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
On Nylander
Wondering what your thoughts were on why he wasn’t waived earlier. Do you think anyone would have picked him up the way he was playing?
I’m wondering if his clearing waivers opens the door for players like Wade Redden or Michael Rozival to clear. In the end, do you really WANT dead weight, even if another team is paying half of their bloated salary?
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Good thing it's intermission
He was waived twice this year. Nobody wanted him for free because his cap hit is absurd and he has a NMC anyway. He wasn’t going to play a game for the Caps ever, under any circumstances, this year or next year so he wasn’t going to get to showcase his remaining skill. The only way anyone would have taken him would have been on re-entry waivers but the Caps wouldn’t do that because they didn’t want to be paying half his salary for someone else.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
forgot about the NMC
That explains so much more.
So I’m assuming the folks at JR have been rosterbating like crazy. Any thoughts on how you’d like your lineup to change now that you have almost $5M in cap space?
They're not getting this kind of coverage at "Hockey Night In Canada" folks! - Randy Hahn
Rosterbating!
Love it. Yeah there have been lots of talks. I’d personally like to stay patient. No need to blow it right away. I’d say an upgrade at D and an upgrade at C would be nice. Ultimately I think our D is our biggest weakness so without an upgrade I’m not sure we can win the Cup. We are solid up front but with the Pens we probably need a bit more strength down the middle. My personal wet dream would be prying Dan Hamhuis and Jason Arnott away from Nashville, but they have to crash before they sell. Everyone has their eye on Scott Niedermayer but his price tag is going to be absolutely insane.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
for me it was hard because Kolzig was so loyal to the Caps so I kind of assumed Huet would want to stay also (not necessarily smart thinking on my part)
Yeah, I figured that it was a pretty big message for the Caps to let Huet push Kolzig out of the net (even though they had to do it to make the playoffs) and that Huet would return the love. Obviously not.

Alright.
I remember he was a deadline acquisition in DC, as well as Fedorov, and that helped propel them. That is stupid, trying to get into a bidding war after making a demand. Pretty dumb, since he ended up being the back up to the Bulin wall most of last year.

Yeah it was funny. His public stance was that he wanted a chance to be a true number one, and he liked the Caps and his time with them. Then he signs with a team that already had a veteran number 1 and sat!
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
He looks smart now, but the only reason(s) Chicago did not lock up Bulin were Brian Campbell, Huet’s contract, and the impending big three that remained unsigned during the summer.

Yup. Not sure locking up Bulin was the answer (he’s currently hurt) either. Still, I’d tie my hopes to Bulin before Huet.

The Pronger extension is also hysterical, but probably not quite as bad because he’s a better player. I was over at BSH and they were already talking about if they have to move Pronger. Hysterical, and good luck with that.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
Yeah I should have been more clear. I’d take him too, but they aren’t getting the same package back they gave up. If they wanted to flip him (which they obviously didn’t) they shouldn’t have signed him to that ridiculous extension.

Khabi did about as much as Havlat before last season, not much. Contract years are great motivators. That being said I was against all the talk of moving them at the deadline because of what they were doing.

Burke says...
At the game looking at Pavelski & a couple of other guys- he just complimented the pass Pavs made to Thornton – admitted that Canada & Russia are the faves, but he hopes that will feed the US team – he’s not just taking the best 20 players trying to find the right players – 7 people pick the players for the US team – they’ve been rating the US players for the past year – stated that Pavs is defintiely ‘in the hunt’ – will announce during the Winter Classic – Burke thinks that playing the olympics in north america can help the league, but playing in non-north america can be a detrement to the teams – even though it may harm the teams at the time, it may help the NHL in the long run (i.e. inspiring young kids to play hockey, etc.) – he just called Miller the best goalie in the Nhl and mentioned Thomas also – looking also for ‘chemistry’ not just talent – Burke says that even if players aren’t announced at the winter classic, there will be injuries so bubble player still have to play well

Move along. You just don’t like him so you’ll latch on to anything you can.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
You don’t like him because of the media hype around a few specific events. Do you hate Dustin Brown? Do you hate Cal Clutterbuck? Do you hate Ryan Callahan?
They all play the same way as AO, but AO has way more skill. Guy is top ten in hits every year but he has like 5 questionable hits in his career. You can’t hit that much and not cross the line on occasion. To say he goes out to try to hurt people is just plane ignorant, and basically discredits anything you say.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

English fail
And hockey understanding fail. When you play on the line, sometimes you cross the line. It’s life. If you want a lily white league, then fine. But you aren’t just condemning AO, though you want to focus on him, you’re condemning the vast majority of players.

I can see you discrediting the NHL writers, I don’t think they are that smart either. But when the players and the media vote a guy MVP two years running….
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.
obviously my point of
him being overrated is clear, with all the award he is accredited.
I don't like you Detroit.
And my point
is that the players, the guys that understand what he is doing and play the game, disagree with you. You’re some bitter punk that has it out for the guy. They watch what he does and say “wow” and then vote for him as MVP. Hard to say a guy is “overrated” when it’s his peers that are doing the rating.
In an ideal world all ten fingers would be on my left hand so my right hand could just be a fist for punching.

Alright
Awesome win! Haven’t been able to hang out in game threads for awhile now, but I caught glimpses of this game (only the chicago goals, so I was pissed).
On an unrelated note, I’m guessing I either missed the post for the Night at the Tank buttons or it fell off the wagon, because no way in hell those buttons get shipped in time now. At any rate, see you all on Saturday!
CUIDADO: Estoy Borracho!
Stellar goaltending from Nabby aside, we did in all fairness kill 7 penalties, and a high shot count doesn’t mean anything if it’s comprised of a low percentage of scoring chances. Additionally, the ’Hawks had last night off, while we played an extremely hard fought battle in Dallas.
All in all, a hell of a back-to-back to take-we owed both of these teams big.
Merry Christmas ladies and gents!
great game! great win! my request to the Hockey Gods and Santa Claus for a great Christmas week looks like a reality … just need Saturday to come thru and my wishes will be complete!!!!

I don’t normally like to bitch bout other teams fans, but Hawks fans are whiny little bitches. Damn! There is no losing gracefully for them huh? They are just right up there with Wings fans.
/end rant

You have to remember...
the Hawks didn’t have any fans as recently as, what, 3 years ago? The current crop of fans are kids who only know Toews, Kane, and a little bit of winning. So of course they are going to be obnoxious. It’s like Patriots fans in the NFL…nothing is greater than the Patriots, since they know nothing else. It happens on all bandwagons, sadly.

Hawks fans
are pretty recent, seeing as how the whole upper level was empty when I was going to games a few years ago. Like ZeroIndulgence aptly notes, some of the younger fans only know the team with Kane, Toews, Keith and Sharp. Every time I’m at a game and someone brings up the fact that the Hawks did this or that, I calmly remind them that it was the Sharks who beat them 13 straight times over 4 years. They usually have nothing to say after that. Usually.
My experience with other fanbases is limited, but I will say that there are some incredibly annoying Hawks fans who make the entire fanbase look bad, but in my experience most are gracious and just glad to have their team back on track. Don’t forget, we couldn’t watch Hawks home games on TV for quite a few years out here, so they lost an entire generation of fans. Even though they can be annoying, it’s nice to actually have Hawks fans care when I wear my Marleau jersey to the Madhouse on Madison.

I was gracious earlier in the season, as some Hawks fans I knew went postal on me
Needless to say, I just made sure to send them a little message saying ’ i missed the game. what happened?"

To be fair
There are some very irritating Sharks fans.
For evidence, spend some time reading WTC comments.
oh god no! then I might hate us too … :)

Glad someone else noticed this...
After reading a lot of blogs on SBN, FTF is actually one of the more objective ones with regard to areas in which our team lacks, or whether or not a win was truly earned, for example. The ‘Hawks fans I’ve encountered are not only fair weather, but LOVE to whine and make excuses. Even more irritating is how they’re so quick to endlessly repeat the “Sharks don’t perform in the postseason” mantra, which is kind of ironic coming from a team whose fanbase probably wasn’t even alive the last time they won a Cup (48 years ago, by my count).
I THINK NABBY SHOULD WEAR A PLIN GOALIE MASK FOR GOOD LUCK
