Hey, someone yelled at me in another post, but some advice please.

I teach skating down here in AZ ( from San Jose, originally). One of my students bought me my brass ring, a Sharks 3rd. Thing is, it has flaws. 1 – It’s a Cheechoo jersey. I would be happy to rock the Cheech’s number and name, but I think they got it on ebay, which brings me to point 2) – The number on the chest is the same size as the arm numbers. Therefore, there is an exceptionally large 14 taking over the front of the jersey. Would it be bad if I wanted to turn it into a Thornton jersey, with appropriately sized digits?

No, he was awesome. He was the biggest reason we made the playoffs (not named Ovechkin). Total stud down the stretch (like 12-1 in his last 13 starts) but then he was only average in the playoffs. We needed him to steal a game or two and he couldn’t.

But the reason I don’t like him is how he negotiated in the off-season. He told GMGM he wanted 5 million for 3 years, and GMGM offered it. Then he tried to increase his demand, then tried to force GMGM into a bidding war with CHI. Eff that.

Part of me can understand where Huet was coming from. He’s not elite, and this was probably his last chance to get a huge contract. But if that’s what you’re thinking just say that. Don’t pretend you want to come back, quote a price, then try to start a bidding war when the GM matches your quote (before the FA period started). I would have had more respect if he just said “I’m going to free agency and I’m going to see what’s out there” instead of dicking us around.

So far it's fantastic

I think the general consensus (at least on this site) was that we were going to keep an open mind and not judge him based on his past or reputation. I read a great article (ESPN maybe?) about how Ottawa’s management team tried to force a trade Heatley was up-front about not wanting, making him look like the bad guy. Two sides to every story, right?

Definitely

And for me it’s also real important to know who actually leaked the trade request. I don’t think Heater went directly to the media so if OTT was the one that leaked it then they are the assholes and paid the price for it.

I don't doubt management leaked it in an effort to paint him as the bad guy

That being said, I was opposed to his coming here because of the way he was leaving, and the prior departure in Atlanta.

His play has swayed my opinion in his favor.

Still, given how the team, management AND the family of Dan Snyder went to bat for him, I think he could have stuck it out there. Imagine that team NOW with Kovalchuk AND Heatley.

Yeah, goals will do that

I had no problem with him leaving ATL. It was a bad situation and he needed a fresh start. But demanding a trade after signing a long term contract with a NMC rubbed me the wrong way. He seems like he’s been a good citizen in SJS and I still don’t hold him solely responsible for the OTT meltdown so he’s fine with me.

Mishandled completely. You can’t let the whole league know you have to trade the guy, then expect to use any leverage. Then add on top of that the 4 mill bonus and you knew they weren’t going to get value back. I have no love for OTT at all so I don’t mind one bit.

Huet has done well, Campbell is playing some great hockey and the team was able to lock up the core for at least 5 years. Things are looking good.

Sure we will miss players like Sharp, Versteeg, Buff and others but I’d rather keep Hossa, Toews, Kane, Campbell and Keith and plug-in around them

Sharp and Versteeg are the guys I really want. If Seabrook or Barker get shopped I’d jump in for them as well. Campbell isn’t a terrible player, when you ignore his cap hit. There are plenty of defensive studs on CHI so Campbell doesn’t have to be the 1D, he can be a PP specialist and be protected a little more. But the term is going to hurt once those guys are off their ELC’s.

Everyone thinks CHI is going to be over a barrel after his season but I disagree. They definitely have to move someone, but they have so many quality players on reasonable contracts that they won’t be forced into any one specific deal. They’ll shop like 4-5 guys and just wait for the best deal. I have a feeling they’ll be alright, even if they take a little bit of a short-term hit in their talent.

Wondering what your thoughts were on why he wasn’t waived earlier. Do you think anyone would have picked him up the way he was playing?

I’m wondering if his clearing waivers opens the door for players like Wade Redden or Michael Rozival to clear. In the end, do you really WANT dead weight, even if another team is paying half of their bloated salary?

Good thing it's intermission

He was waived twice this year. Nobody wanted him for free because his cap hit is absurd and he has a NMC anyway. He wasn’t going to play a game for the Caps ever, under any circumstances, this year or next year so he wasn’t going to get to showcase his remaining skill. The only way anyone would have taken him would have been on re-entry waivers but the Caps wouldn’t do that because they didn’t want to be paying half his salary for someone else.

Rosterbating!

Love it. Yeah there have been lots of talks. I’d personally like to stay patient. No need to blow it right away. I’d say an upgrade at D and an upgrade at C would be nice. Ultimately I think our D is our biggest weakness so without an upgrade I’m not sure we can win the Cup. We are solid up front but with the Pens we probably need a bit more strength down the middle. My personal wet dream would be prying Dan Hamhuis and Jason Arnott away from Nashville, but they have to crash before they sell. Everyone has their eye on Scott Niedermayer but his price tag is going to be absolutely insane.

Burke says...

At the game looking at Pavelski & a couple of other guys- he just complimented the pass Pavs made to Thornton – admitted that Canada & Russia are the faves, but he hopes that will feed the US team – he’s not just taking the best 20 players trying to find the right players – 7 people pick the players for the US team – they’ve been rating the US players for the past year – stated that Pavs is defintiely ‘in the hunt’ – will announce during the Winter Classic – Burke thinks that playing the olympics in north america can help the league, but playing in non-north america can be a detrement to the teams – even though it may harm the teams at the time, it may help the NHL in the long run (i.e. inspiring young kids to play hockey, etc.) – he just called Miller the best goalie in the Nhl and mentioned Thomas also – looking also for ‘chemistry’ not just talent – Burke says that even if players aren’t announced at the winter classic, there will be injuries so bubble player still have to play well

by AfroPuff on Dec 22, 2009 6:52 PM PST reply actions

I also loved his stance on the head hitting. Glad he stood up to that guy and didn’t stick up for Mike Richards. That was a bullshit hit and Burke basically agreed.

You don’t like him because of the media hype around a few specific events. Do you hate Dustin Brown? Do you hate Cal Clutterbuck? Do you hate Ryan Callahan?

They all play the same way as AO, but AO has way more skill. Guy is top ten in hits every year but he has like 5 questionable hits in his career. You can’t hit that much and not cross the line on occasion. To say he goes out to try to hurt people is just plane ignorant, and basically discredits anything you say.

I finally made it!

enjoying this game immensely. especially now that i actually have a tv rather than streaming it!

Petey and Fresh always dunking on Spartans,
Biscuits in baskets from Heatley and Thornton,
Bam-Bam and Gore on the way to some rings,
These are a few of my favorite things.

Alright

Awesome win! Haven’t been able to hang out in game threads for awhile now, but I caught glimpses of this game (only the chicago goals, so I was pissed).

On an unrelated note, I’m guessing I either missed the post for the Night at the Tank buttons or it fell off the wagon, because no way in hell those buttons get shipped in time now. At any rate, see you all on Saturday!

Stellar goaltending from Nabby aside, we did in all fairness kill 7 penalties, and a high shot count doesn’t mean anything if it’s comprised of a low percentage of scoring chances. Additionally, the ’Hawks had last night off, while we played an extremely hard fought battle in Dallas.

All in all, a hell of a back-to-back to take-we owed both of these teams big.

Merry Christmas ladies and gents!

Seriously

I’m not gonna say all Hawks fans are crazy but the ones I’ve encountered are terrible.

by idunno723 on Dec 23, 2009 10:15 AM PST up reply actions

You have to remember...

the Hawks didn’t have any fans as recently as, what, 3 years ago? The current crop of fans are kids who only know Toews, Kane, and a little bit of winning. So of course they are going to be obnoxious. It’s like Patriots fans in the NFL…nothing is greater than the Patriots, since they know nothing else. It happens on all bandwagons, sadly.

Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

by ZeroIndulgence on Dec 23, 2009 10:36 AM PST up reply actions

Hawks fans

are pretty recent, seeing as how the whole upper level was empty when I was going to games a few years ago. Like ZeroIndulgence aptly notes, some of the younger fans only know the team with Kane, Toews, Keith and Sharp. Every time I’m at a game and someone brings up the fact that the Hawks did this or that, I calmly remind them that it was the Sharks who beat them 13 straight times over 4 years. They usually have nothing to say after that. Usually.

My experience with other fanbases is limited, but I will say that there are some incredibly annoying Hawks fans who make the entire fanbase look bad, but in my experience most are gracious and just glad to have their team back on track. Don’t forget, we couldn’t watch Hawks home games on TV for quite a few years out here, so they lost an entire generation of fans. Even though they can be annoying, it’s nice to actually have Hawks fans care when I wear my Marleau jersey to the Madhouse on Madison.

Glad someone else noticed this...

After reading a lot of blogs on SBN, FTF is actually one of the more objective ones with regard to areas in which our team lacks, or whether or not a win was truly earned, for example. The ‘Hawks fans I’ve encountered are not only fair weather, but LOVE to whine and make excuses. Even more irritating is how they’re so quick to endlessly repeat the “Sharks don’t perform in the postseason” mantra, which is kind of ironic coming from a team whose fanbase probably wasn’t even alive the last time they won a Cup (48 years ago, by my count).
