Before this month got underway, we came to the conclusion that these next two months of Sharks hockey were a prime opportunity for the team to load up on standings points in preparation for the last third of the year-- the vast amount of home games led one to assume that it was an achievable goal, a chance to pad the stats and acquire a thick layer of body fat to be used in case the team decided to hibernate once the premier players returned from their respective national teams.
Unfortunately, the case can be made that hibernation struck early. And I'm not quite sure there's a whole lot of sun melting the snow just yet.
What we have today is a look at the even strength play of the team as a whole over the course of this month, broken up by period. As always, penalties drawn/taken do not include coinciding minors, fighting majors, "too many men", and puck over the glass infractions.
There's not a whole lot of positives here, except where it counts (that being the scoreboard). Whether or not you take that as a good thing when looking forward to future results is completely up to you. In my opinion, San Jose doesn't have the personnel to be able to counterpunch to the extent that Anaheim did in last year's postseason-- at some point the lack of a premier shutdown defenseman will expose some gaudy shots against totals, causing more pucks to end up in the back of the net. You also have to wonder just how much the Sharks can continue to rely on Nabokov to remain nearly invincible as he has looked the past few games, what with his heavy workload, age, and the oft-cited effects of playing in Vancouver during the Winter Olympics.
However, what concerns me the most about December would have to be the penalties drawn vs. taken. Those are some pretty porous numbers, and seem to indicate a team that has (or had) forgotten to move their feet. A lot of this team's production is reliant on special teams, and if they're giving away opportunities left and right like they have during December, you're going to see them continue to turn in erratic game by game efforts for the rest of the year.
All that being said, the win against Anaheim was an excellent showing for a team who needed one. Here's to the next two games against top opponents producing more of the same.
*****
Phoenix is a team that really gives me the Sharks some issues, in large part to their ability to break the game down into manageable blocks. Dave Tippett's teams have always been a hallmark of the trap system which, while frustrating to watch, is extremely effective, especially with a goaltender who has the skill level of an Ilya Bryzgalov. It's likely going to be another low-event snoozefest tonight.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-2. Goals by Heatley, Ortmeyer, and McGinn. The gameday open thread gets a little more traffic.
Go Sharks.

Looking at those records is a bit depressing
The charity point is working too hard for us. This team needs to win outright more. Especially more than the Coyotes.
Are you going to this game Plank? Or are you going to the Caps game?

I won’t be going tonight, and now the Caps game is looking 50-50 too— I’ll let you know by email what the plan ends up being.

I think we plan on making it a tradition the first game after Christmas. It will be our very own Boxing Day holiday without the noble cause of charity.

Pretty sure the pregame show kicks off around 7? I could swear it’s 30 minutes before the game, because every now and then I’ll stream it from the KFOX website.

I don’t know about non KNBR broadcasts, though. Only reason I say that is because I was once driving to Tahoe and I couldn’t find a feed until the start of the game.

Interesting Fact
If we calculated the number of goals McGinn should have scored according to predictions by Plank, he should be leading the league in goals.
If only.

McGinn isn't the one who is supposed to be leading the league in goals
That’d be Logan Couture.

That’s ok because the game after that against the Capitals should be the most entertaining of the year. Two top offensive teams in the league with top centers and top two goalscorers in all of hockey and both lacking good defense.. I predict we’ll see at least 12 goals.
Ah, but we said this before the game in Washington, and the final score ended up being 4-1…not a particularly high scoring affair. But it should be a good show either way. I will happen to be at that game (wouldn’t miss a Caps-Sharks game!), so that one should be more exciting!

For Chimera nonetheless.
Pretty crazy, but I think we got the better of the formerly Columbus third-liners.

I remember that deal
Ehrhoff for Chimera would have been a steal for Columbus, but they seemed to have done okay, getting 2 for 1 for him anyway.
Really hope the JR crew crashes the thread tonight. I’d love to hear their take on it.
Also, Manny played top line in Columbus. But yeah, I like having Jody and Manny.

He was on the top-line? My bad, I thought he was used in a third line role. Fail on my part.

Well...
Considering what we ended up with, I think Chimera would have been a steal in comparison to what we technically got for Error… (I’m ignoring the fact the cap space was used to fit Heatley).
In departure of Error I see mostly arrival of Demers. In 4-5 years Demers has a potential to be the next Boyle.
Don't get me wrong
No matter how well Error does in Vancouver I still don’t care that he’s gone. He drove me nuts on the ice.
Still, Chimera would have been a better return than an actual 1st round bust and a career minor leaguer.
Soooooooooo, your saying you prefer Huskins then?

Losing Error and Luko
Isn’t really a problem for me. Really Demers is the replacement for Error and not Huskins and I’d rather see Demers on the ice every. single. night.
Huskins and Lukowich are a wash really.
I hate to say it, but the numbers disagree with you
And most people have mentioned at least once that are defense is not good this year. Now, understand that I agree we had no choice to let him go to free up cap space, but I don’t get why you think he wasn’t good. I don’t think he was bad at all, he did screw up at times (he did have -12 plus?minus last year) but I liked what he brought to the table. Last years defense is far superior to this years, and Erhoff was a part of it.
I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!
by Diamondback15 on Dec 28, 2009 5:45 PM PST up reply actions
Last years defense was better than this years.
And I don’t think ED (hehe) said anything to doubt that.
Ehrhoff was part of last year’s D but that doesn’t necessarily make him a good player. Semenov was part of last years D for a bit but I wouldn’t call him a great player.
The notasgood defense this year has something to do with the Blake and Vlasic. Both were on the team last year, but Vlasic was playing out of character earlier (he’s been better now) and Blake is getting older and slower. They aren’t quite the shutdown pair they were last year.
Like ED said, Huskins and Luko are a wash and Demers > Ehrhoff + upside.
did not see that coming
and Jasper’s didn’t either, so I don’t feel too bad about being like WHA?!

I went there when I first heard
and it’s crazy there. Between people just being totally floored to discussions over who should be the next captain (Knuble, Ovie, Brooks) – craziness especially since they’re playing so well. I know that the NHL (and it’s teams) are a business but ughhh
Wow, moving the Captain eh? Looks like they save a bit of coin with the deal, and that makes me think they’re getting ready to go after a blueliner at the deadline. It’s the only upgrade they really need provided Varlamov continues his pace.

Dont support the Hollywood Idiots.
- end mini rant.
\ Cook dinner for girlfriend instead, she will be impressed.
Oh, this begs for a much larger rant
What is wrong with supporting Hollywood idiots? I’ve had ample entertainment from them, especially Cameron, who has made several movies that are still very enjoyable to watch to this day.
Though I agree that a girlfriend won’t be much impressed with this movie, unless she’s a tech dork. The story is pretty blah.
Well right now I’m boycotting them due to the Polanski bullshit … and with Hollywood coming out in support of him. But hey, if you have no issue with actors and actresses supporting a child rapist, go for it. Me, I’m all for people boycotting Hollywood and letting their disgust with them be heard loud and clear thru the almighty dollar.

I help my large multinational bank earn money by keeping my money with them. I give money to planet raping gas companies when I drive to work and back. I give money to the evil empire of Microsoft when I use their products for home and work purposes. I use horrible poisons to kill rodents that try to get into my home. I abuse underpaid and mistreated immigrants when I have them mow my lawn, clean towels in hotels and buy fruit at the grocery store.
I enjoy red meat, white meat, and fish. I wear leather. I understand why animal shelters put down animals and completely support it.
Yeah, I don’t really see the point in drawing the line against Hollywood when I ignore the line so many other places.
Agreed on the story part. I had no idea what the movie was about before seeing it and I was able to predict the end and who dies and doesn’t die and everything. Oh, and the part where he goes around making all those inspirational speeches cracks me up, because it uses every cliche in the book. Seriously, I think he uses direct quotes from both Miracle and the Little Dictator.
So, yeah, not a fan of the movie.
