Off the Post - End of the Year edition

I'm going to be updating this as the Olympic rosters stories come in, so check back occasionally in the next 72 hours.

[UPDATE] - Pat Sajak is one helluva hockey fan, by game show host standards.

[UPDATE] - Norway, Latvia, and Slovakia have each named their Olympic rosters.

[UPDATE] - Logan Couture and Danny Groulx have been selected to attend the AHL All-Star Game.

[UPDATE] - Douglas Murray will be taking your questions, while Rob Blake already has your answers.

[UPDATE] - Puck Daddy lists the goalie saves of the decade... and unfortunately the #1 happened against the Sharks just a few games ago.

- Devin Setoguchi may have scored last night, but he's far from off the hook =

"It’s no secret he has been sent a message from the coaching staff," Sharks coach Todd McLellan said of Setoguchi. "He needs to pick up his game. He played pretty well the other night against Anaheim but we didn’t think he deserved a promotion. This time he came and had a couple of good early shifts. Now it’s up to him. I don’t care where he plays but we need him to play."

- Mirtle has your calendar of Olympic roster announcements - Belarus and Russia were first out of the gate.  Canada et al (except the US) to follow on Wednesday.

- Douglas Murray cracks Sweden's roster, while former Shark / Red Wing and current Canuck Mikael Samuelsson had some choice words regarding his snub.

Notably absent from the list is Detroit's Johan Franzen, who is currently nursing a knee injury. Another notable absentee is Vancouver's Mikael Samuelsson, who pulled no punches in discussing the snub.

"Probably going to get in trouble for this, but they can go (expletive deleted) themselves," was his reaction following the Canucks win over Calgary Sunday night.

- Jason Chimera heads to the Capitals while the Blue Jackets acquire Washington's captain Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina.

- Phoenix's AHL team to potentially move to Canada... sounds strangely familiar.

- Own goals - the quick path back to the AHL.

- Injuries - Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson is out 4-6 weeks, the KingsJason Williams is out with a broken leg and Minnesota's Chuck Kobasew is out with a sprained MCL.  Vaclav Prospal is also out due to knee surgery.

- Paul Kariya had to stay a night in the hospital after being elbowed in the head by a Sabre.

- The Ducks had Kyle Calder placed on waivers yesterday - he has until this morning to get picked up.

- Mike Cammalleri pots the 20,000th goal in the history of the Montreal Canadiens.

- Chris Chelios' heart - and AHL contract - goes on.  So does his chili, we presume.

Star-divide

Ex-Sharks - where are they now?

- A lawsuit possibly coming to an irresponsible blogger... nope, it ain't me.

- More on unfounded hearsay, this time on how team relocation rumors can hurt contract talks with players.

- The Nashville Predators are looking to get in the playoffs, mostly just to get more butts in the seats to qualify for revenue sharing.

- Rudy Kelly is an expert at Facebook etiquette.

- A classic joke - St. Peter and the devil have a discussion about hockey.

- Always nice to see the Kipper give one up an ugly one...

WTF SWEDEN

I have always been able to snag Mikael Samuelsson in the late rounds of fantasy drafts every year, and that guy has always been, in the words of Randy Moss, “STRAIGHT CASH HOMEY!”. However, Sweden is pretty banged up, and I’m sure at least one of their forwards named to the roster isn’t going to be ready for Vancouver, so hopefully he’ll get in. After the little tirade on display here, though, nothing is certain.

For those interested

The Sharks currently have 3,917 goals in the history of the franchise (regular season, not counting the shootout) – this is assuming my painstaking math during a bout of insomnia is correct. Needless to say, chasing the Habs is an act of futility.

What an ugly goal

sorry Kipper, I kinda smirked.

As for Samuelsson, I’d be pissed too! At least he’s showing some emotion over not getting picked. I doubt that will help him, but it’s better than “oh, it’s ok. It’s an honor just to be considered,” which we all know is the lie to hide disappointment in anything like this. (or award ceremonies)

Couture and Danny Groulx named in AHL All-Star game

And Logan continues to disappoint – can’t believe we wasted a top 10 draft pick on this bum.

He’s 28 and if I remember correctly he’d had to clear waivers because of his age – it seems like he was signed more for the benefit of Worcester.

Random

But did anyone else that watched Avatar think that Sam Worthington looked exactly like Sean Avery? I was thinking that throughout the movie last night, and now Puck Daddy actually has a thing about it.

Not going to put this up above

But it’s worth noting that Phoenix is the 6th best team in the NHL right now. So, starting tomorrow, we face the 4th and 6th best teams in the NHL in 24 hours. We’re #3, after New Jersey and Chicago, for reference.

Super excited

they’re announcing the Canadian Olympic Team tomorrow and it’s pretty exciting. It’ll be on a bunch of different channels and all the newspapers will have special sections devoted to it. Kind of cool to be in a country that loves the sport that I love, eh?

Yay Canada!

by AfroPuff on Dec 29, 2009 10:36 PM PST reply actions   0 recs

I’m so excited as well. I’m also glad, for once, that I live in a time zone that’s three hours behind – means less of a wait after I wake up, lol.

I really hope all four Sharks make it. And that it gives them an extra jump for the game tomorrow.
