Five For Howling

After making franchise history with 2 penalty shot goals in the same game (first time since Feb. 11, 1982), as well as temporarily taking back the top spot in the West, the Sharks journey to Glendale for their third back-to-back home-and-away of the season, against the surprising 6th-best team in the NHL.

Here are some bullet points to digest pre-game, pre-end-of-the-(faux)-decade... because you'll need something to help soak up all that alcohol.

  • The Phoenix Coyotes have won 10 straight at home - a franchise record, including the years in Lose-ipeg - while the Sharks have won 6 straight.  Obviously something's got to give.
  • The Phoenix metropolitan area has started to take notice of the Yotes' success - attendance skyrocketed after Christmas (the difference a holiday will make - I was in Glendale on Dec. 23rd, and it was a fucking ghost town, apologies to OdinMercer).  Fortunately for the Sharks, butts in the seats are to their advantage.
  • The Sharks' record against the Coyotes is 1-1-1, including a shootout loss after a scoreless game.  The one regulation loss featured Thomas Greiss in net.
  • The Sharks' season record for the second game of back-to-backs = 3-1-2.  The record for away games in home-away back-to-backs = 1-1-0.  The one regulation loss?  In Glendale, naturally.
  • Assuming Ilya Bryzgalov is in goal for Phoenix, it will be an Olympic matchup no matter who San Jose puts in net.  If it's Evgeni Nabokov, expect the eyes of Team Russia to be on this game, as they still need to pick their starter.
  • Speaking of Bryzgalov, whatabeast.
  • Dave Tippett's record against the Sharks = 25-13-6... to say nothing of the playoffs.
  • The Sharks' record when HTML scores a goal = 22-4-5, or 25-6-6 when they notch any type of point (it's worth noting that every Sharks victory has featured a point from H,T, or M).  The Sharks' record when HTML is kept goal-less = 3-4-2.
  • One of the 4 regulation losses in which HTML scored happened to be against Phoenix.
  • The three-year anniversary of Coyote Ugly - never forget.
Conico's New Year resolution?  Be less pessimistic, by drinking more.

Accordingly, Sharks win 3-2 with at least one goal from HTML, and go on to win a Stanley Cup some time before 2020.

Happy New Decade, DON'T drink and drive [warning - graphic image], and GO SHARKS.

You would have to remind me of that one...

I was at that game, took the whole family. We ran into DW on the club level with the Sharks Dads pre-game, and he took time to talk to my boys and take a picture with my wife (who was wearing a vintage DW sweater at the time.) His parting shot to us (remember, they had lost to the Coyotes and Ducks the previous two games) was “we will play better tonight, and we will win.”

Uhhh, Doug—-remind me not to ask you for more predictions. Ever.

There was one other bizarre happening that night. A puck got shot up into the netting, and they went to a TV break. The nets there are kind of loose, so pucks often go into the crowd. But that one went back on the ice and was sitting tucked up under back of the the goal, in play. They never noticed it and dropped the puck anyway. Play went on for a minute or so in that end, until a linesman finally decided to check out why all of Section 107 was screaming, pointing and banging on the glass and scooped it up.

Be glad I went with this one

I failed to dig successfully through my email folder for one that featured a Brazilian duo whose faces were literally cut off. Not their heads – just their faces. One of the faces ended up in its owner’s lap, while the other landed on the ground outside the car door, looking up as if to say, “WTF just happened?”

Vomit city.

I still have disgustingly visceral memories of Red Asphalt 1-4 from Drivers Ed. That was enough of a deterrent for me. The minute I saw someone’s brains pouring, literally POURING out of their head as they were being peeled off the road I swore to never to drive drunk. Period.

I’ve decided never to drive drunk when this guy I knew was killed by a drunk driver in freshman year. And after all those CSI episodes where it turns out the victim was killed by a drunk driver.

It also helps that I’ve decided not to drink until I’m 21, and so I’m on permanent designated driver/friend duty for my friends until then. I’m fine with it, because I’d rather have to carry or drive someone home than see them ruin their lives.

Actually, he wasn’t even driving. He was crossing the street (Almaden Expressway) at a crosswalk when the driver ran the red light at 70mph, hit him, and killed him.

I've been hit by drunk drivers 3 times...

Once while driving a marked squad car. Once at 4 in the afternoon (on St. Patty’s Day). The third at 7AM by a college kid after an all-night bender.

But the best was when I was almost hit on foot while doing crowd control as a high-rise downtown building was burning. The guy drove on the sidewalk to pass two sets of barricades, ran over several fire hoses and was coming right at me. I jumped out of the way, and the guy finally stops (with ~10 people pounding on his car) under a ladder truck with firefighters on the ladder actually fighting the fire, water from hoses spraying everywhere, lights, sirens and asks “is something going on here?”

I don’t go out much on nights like these, or if there’s alcohol and driving involved.

As a former court clerk....

I can vouch for this. It’s NOT worth it. You’ll be regretting it the rest of your life. I happened to witness a DUI wreck where a man who was so drunk he could barely stand up, killed a family of 6 in front of the turn off to go to my house. Forever etched in my mind and I wish to God I could get rid of that memoryt.

I’ve seen a lot in my times in circuit court. If you’re drunk and you need a ride home, call a cab. Crawl. Walk. Anything but get behind the wheel. I know in Memphis, TN in the area where I’m from, cab companies don’t charge fares to those who are sloshed and need a SAFE ride home.

I’m heading to the Liberty Bowl to watch the Hogs and East Carolina play on Saturday. Friends I’m going with have already elected me the designated driver and I do NOT mind. I don’t drink as it is and I’m MORE than happy to make sure my best friends get home safely after the game.

Stay safe. Stay sober. Go Sharks.

Go Sharks!

Feelin’ pretty good after last night’s game, I think — but I can’t let that get my hopes up. No illusions, this is going to be a tough one to bang out. Is it weird that I actually care more about the game than about the end of 2009? It’s just another year, like so many years before it, and (misinterpreted Mayan artifacts aside) so many more to come …

Of course, I suppose a game is just another game, as well, until April …

This is the first time since 2005’s new years eve that I’m staying home. My other family is having a little shindig, and they asked me a year ago to keep this new years’ open, so I did. I’m regretting it about now, when I remember just this time last year I was on a plane towards New Orleans…and I couldda been doing something similar this year…but such is life. I’m sure my presence around the area this year will be appreciated.

Next year I’m going to Rio, though.

Awesome – I’m considering South America this summer, but it will be winter there. Carneval would be amazing, too.

No worries on staying home – I’m going to a little house party, nothing too major. The GF is crazy sick, and I came down with a mysterious cough that sapped my vocal chords, but I’ll probably make it out to the party tonight. I should be around the thread for the whole game.

I love McLellan

his dry humor and no BS makes me laugh

by AfroPuff on Dec 31, 2009 3:12 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed

Like after last night, when asked if he had ever seen two penalty shots in the same game, he said, “No, but I’ve seen three shorthanded goals against.” Funny with a bit of self-deprecation in it.

ugh!! the only thing that gets me past moments like that without shooting myself is knowing that every team has events they wish they could erase from their history as well

And now for something almost entirely random

One of the linesman, Landon Bathe, used to be a Coyotes prospect. He played 16 games for the Stockton Thunder during the 2005-06 campaign when they were the ‘AA’ farm team for PHX. In that last game, his skate caught a deep rut and his knee was destroyed. It ended his pro hockey career. If I remember correctly, he later sued the city of Stockton and the team (?) – I don’t recall how/if it was resolved.

Not too long ago I heard from his sister Carrlyn, who is an LA Ice Girl, that Landon had moved on – wife, new baby and working as an official.

Small hockey world!

Stalock

Just made an awesome save.

McCauly made a great goal on a breakaway

Great pass from Joslin from deep in the zone to spring him on the break. 2-0 Sharks.

Sharks are owning this game

It’s like they’re on a permanent power play.

I approve.

Seriously

Even Stalock is getting into the offensive game, making breakout passes. But then again, he is the next Martin Brodeur ;P

It makes me mildly less worried about having him and Greiss as our goalies next year if we let Nabby walk. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still very worried, just less so.

by Evilducks on Dec 31, 2009 3:47 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I though we were going to be in a bit of a bind, but Stalock has been playing amazingly, Greiss has been solid, and there is always the chance that Nabokov takes a hometown discount.

Boo and Portland with a cheap PP marker

Stalock made an awesome save, splits on the goal line – he gets pushed into the net along with the puck as the cage gets knocked off its moorings and the ref signals goal. WEAAAK

Why pick up Leach

if all he does is sit on the bench? (or the press box, where ever they send him) Not that I’m complaining, it just strikes me as odd.

I’m guessing just in case one Dman gets injured, they have an uber-cheap guy with NHL experience in the lineup. Plus, he helps them reach the minimum number of roster players so they can send down more expensive guys.

I think he broke his hand, which takes a while to heal, but last night IIRC he was stuck at home with the flu.

fine by me. I was just curious since he’d played in one game.

And they can legitimately threaten to bench Huskins if his play slides any more. He fits easily under the cap.

that is a good reason in and of itself. he had been playing better, he really had…poor guy. It sucks to be the new Semenov.
