stufflife's Stats Spreadsheet
I've been working on this since game one, waiting for the right time to unveil. It all started when I tried to help mymclife create a new metric for power play effectiveness, but was unable to find the stats I wanted. I realized I was probably going to have to keep my own statistics for the players and their games.
Yeah, I'm a math geek.
This started as one page and eventually grew to five. It might see more iterations as time progresses, as I'm interested in what you think would be interesting to know. Here's my short list of things that could be added, in time...
1. Scoring first vs. Game outcome
2. Team plus/minus
3. Scoring streaks and other trends
As you'll no doubt notice, I've spent an enormous amount of time working on this. To appreciate it all, you'd have to see the Excel file from which this was created (with most column headers as vertical, not horizontal), but Google Docs won't let me upload that.
It's massive. It's bigger than a burrito that's bigger than your head. It floats, but it's not a witch. Without further ado...

I forgot to mention that I found a couple of weird things. Maybe someone with more hockey knowledge than me can figure this out.
On 11/20/2009, Derek Joslin got a second assist on an even strength goal, but not a plus, because he was apparently not on the ice against the Flyers at the exact time of the goal. This also happened to Ryane Clowe, but I can’t remember which game it was, off the top of my head.
I also learned that Dany Heatley’s penalty shot goal counted as an even strength goal, so he got a plus, though no one else did, because they weren’t on the ice. In my opinion, it should still be credited as a plus for those Sharks on the ice at the time of the incident and minus for the Blue Jackets.

There it is— I was waiting for you to drop this after you sent it to me in an email awhile back.
Great stuff.

Woah, now how did I miss this?
This is amazing. It’s like, a stat geek’s wet dream or something. Also, I think my mind just exploded.

My wife can attest that I spent a LOT of time doing this. I didn’t mean to make anyone’s head explode – I just wanted to give back.
Wet dreams? Really? We’re not all pre-pubescent boys, you know.
Actually, if you have time, can you look through and make sure the number of times shorthanded is correct? Here’s my dilemma…
If the Sharks get overlapping penalties so they go from 4 on 5 to 3 on 5 to 4 on 5, I only counted that as one time being shorthanded. It was only one period of shorthandedness, after all. Having the wrong numbers here may affect the stats for goals and shots / short handed time.

Newly updated, through the first 35. I would really like to have more comments than days old, even if I am responsible for the majority of the comments.
I tried to create a couple of interesting stats. In skater stats, Goals For when on the ice per 60 minutes, in even strength, man advantage, and shorthanded. In team stats, you can find shots and goals per power play opportunity and shots and goals per power play minute, which I thought was the more interesting statistic for determining efficacy.
