Quick one from me today as I'm nurturing a relationship with some books. Yummy.
- Great game to watch against the Flames on Saturday, even if the Sharks walked out of the building with nothing to show for it in the standings. The intensity was there, the opportunities were there, it was just a matter of failing to cash in. Also, one thing that's interesting-- a lot of talk after the game about how San Jose "needed to get more people to the front of the net." While I agree with that statement to a degree (there were times when Kipper had a clear sight line to the puck at the blueline), my question is this-- did anything really change from previous outings (specifically wins), or was it just a convenient talking point after a loss? I feel like the equation hasn't differed very much on a game-to-game basis this season, and just because one goal is on the scoreboard at the end of the tilt doesn't mean they did an exceptionally poor job of jamming bodies in the crease, or more specifically, did an exceptionally poor job compared to previous outings. Sure there's room for some improvement there, but let's not kid ourselves and say that this was an atrocious effort compared to we saw in the 30 games before. In fact, I would postulate that the effort in this area was better than the majority of games I have seen this season. Say two shots that hit the post go in-- are we complaining about the lack of traffic in front of the net? I'm not sure we are. At the end of the day you have a team that is second in the NHL with 104 goals scored. You just ran into a hot goaltender.
- The Kings big guns have cooled off considerably since the last time these two teams met, and yet they continue to win games, going 6-3-1 in their last ten, including a 2-1 win to the Calgary Flames on Monday. While there may not be a battle for the Pacific Division lead tonight, it's still an important one for both teams-- Los Angeles is winless at HP Pavilion in their last five games, and San Jose is currently in the midst of a bit of a slide at home, going 1-1-1 in the month of December. These next two months were labeled a good place to pick up standings points both before this season as well as five days ago, so anytime they plan on starting to capitalize on this would be quite alright with me.
- Two bullet points seemed a little light, so an executive decision was made to add three.
- ...wait, there's more! Not a big fan of ice girls (sort of seems like a cheap gimmick honestly, nothing against the profession), but if they managed to pull off some Space Age suits like those that premiered in Staples Center the other night, well, then you might have me sold.
Prediction: Sharks win 3-1. Goals by Boyle, Heatley, and McGinn. Denis Gauthier purchases a ticket to the game and elbows Patrick Marleau in the head on his walk to the dressing room during the second intermission. Whatabum.
Go Sharks.

More importantly...
It feels like they haven’t WON in forever…which they haven’t. Time for the boys to get back into the win column tonight!

Well said Plank-I was at the game on Saturday, and I couldn’t honestly find a lot to complain about aside from how much I loathe Firecrotch (Kippy). Our blueline at times continues to forget that their primary focus should be preventing opposing teams from taking advantage of costly giveaways in the neutral zone, breaking up passing lanes, taking the body, and diving in front of shots. It’s great to consistently see the latter from players like Malhotra, but I’d like to see that among more of the players. But then again, that’s not news to anyone. It’s frustrating, because at times they show signs of brilliance, and then 5 minutes later an opposing player makes us pay for sloppy neutral zone play and is streaking to the net (3 times in the case of the ’Hawks). For the most part, I think our ability to break up shooting lanes has been stellar, particularly on the PK.
Granted, not all blame can be placed on our blueline. Even Jumbo’s been guilty of some pretty careless and sloppy play on the breakout recently. Saturday would’ve been a perfect time for Boyle to dangle the shit out of the Flames and put one in, tying the game and making a case for his inclusion on Team Canada at the same time.
Overall, I’m not too concerned-every team has its slumps, even at home. We’re pretty much 100% healthy again with the exception of Staubitz and Shelley.
All I want for my birthday is a Sharks WIN...
…and a goal by Pavelski. Time to get back on track
Pavelski closing in, Pavelski fires, HE SCOOORES!! 5 games not enough! The Sharks have another date in the Lone Star State!
GO SHARKS!!
Dear Hockey Gods,
Please let RudyKelly cry tonight as we destroy his Kings.
Thank you kindly,
Angie

Bodies to the net
I think this is almost always a talking point, whether we win or lose. We’re supposedly a “soft team.” And, it seems at times as if we get pinned along the boards and it takes 2-3 guys to win the puck, and then as soon as we do, there’s a weak shot at net that’s gloved by the goaltender.
Obviously with 104 goals to our credit, we’re doing more than that, but, I hate to beat a dead horse, it doesn’t matter until the playoffs. We’ve not scored many goals there, and goals there tend to have to be ugly. They usually come with traffic in front of the net or guys driving the net. I’d like to see those habits form in the regular season, because if you start slow in April and May (see: series vs. Edmonton, Detroit, Dallas and Anaheim), there’s precious little time to recover, unlike the regular season.

I know we ran into a hot goaltender, but we have the firepower to win games like that. We have to get better at cooling off great/hot goalies if we are going to win in the PO’s. One loss in the grand scheme of things doesn’t get me upset. You’re gonna lose some games in the NHL its a fact of life. And although we’ve been pretty spoiled at home, the laws still apply. Some nights just don’t go your way no matter how well you are playing.
That said, we better win tonight for two reasons: 1. its LA, 2. I’m going to the game. ;)
As for the space age suits, I’m double down! The problem is we need hotter ice chicks at HP. It’s the old good from far, far from good syndrome…and they don’t look good from far.
We just traded who for who?!
I spoke with Conico after the game about the large number of turnovers. He pointed out miscues by Vlasic, I added a few by Blake, and I just remembered seeing at least one by Clowe. I can’t remember any turning into goals directly, but turnovers do cost possession time, and you can’t score without the puck. I guess it just didn’t feel like the Sharks played a strong game.
Also, I think Wysh has a crush on you, Plank. Two links in two days! Maybe I do, too, since I shaved myself a big, fatty mustache last week. I’ll have to send you a photo.

previous game...
I thought the Sharks looked good against Calgary overall. They brought a physical presence to a team that has in the past, pushed the Sharkies around a bit more than I’d like to see. SJ won’t win every game and when you lose to a team as strong as Calgary it’s really no big deal.
Now for LA, is Ryyan Smyyth still out? I’d like to see the Sharkies put the bodies to LA’s forwards and see how they respond.
I'll drink that! oh...I'll drink TO that.
Sharks win 1-0
The Kings get 47 shots on net, but Nabby reads Rudy’s post and plays like god stoning the Kings everytime. He then goes on to play like the rest of the season and into the playoffs. In the second round we face the Kings and Nabby gets four shutouts in the sweep. We win the Stanley Cup as Nabby wins the Con Smyth, the Vezina, the Nobel Peace Prize (for inventing a plant that is nutritious and grows everywhere) signs for 5 years at a million a peace and convinces other Sharks to sign at hometown discount. We win the Cup 5 years in a row and Nabby also prevents 2012.
Oh and Blake gets the goal and Rudy cries.
I'm warning you! I have ADHD and I know how to use it!!!

Please get angry Joe.
82 games are a lot. + Olympics. + Playoffs.
As a fan we expect the guys to all put out a perfect effort every night but a full on effort does not always equal a win. I was totally entertained by the game even in a loss. I don’t expect SJ to win every night, just compete like bats outta hell!
Here comes the dead horse: forcing a puck to the net that is intercepted…acceptable. Floating a pass to the blue line that is picked and becomes a break out. NOT. Inexcusable really, especially if you get paid 7 mill a year to pass the puck.
2nd observation…as of late the crashin and bangin has really let up until Calgary came to town. As of late the wins have dried up a bit too…Also Clowe is scorin more…is he hitting less?
Here are a few rumors that I would like to start with the intention of pissing off Joe Thornton.
1 – I heard that he would make the Canada roster if he was more physical but everyone knows he is a sissy that is afraid to shoot the puck and bang with guys.
2 – Jumbo only passes because he could never get a hat trick.
3 – He nicknamed himself Jumbo to make up for deficiencies in the cup region.
Here's to the second round!
You want a rumor that will piss Joe off?

It’s my first game in a few years and I can’t wait. Love going to the Tank.

Drunk and certainly not watching the game because I’ll be fast asleep, but still GO SHARKS!
And you think you live in a non-traditional hockey market...
3-1??
I hardly think that the Kings will only score 1. Though I think that the Sharks do have an advantage on the PP (Because the Kings PK sucks) The rest of the game should be pretty even. Stay out of the penalty box and the Kings will win this game. Kopi, Williams and Frolov are starting to mesh and Brown will bounce the Sharks forwards off the boards all night. The Kings are covering the middle of the defensive zone better as of late and the Sharks are giving up all kinds of open shots from the slot in their last three games. Should be fun to watch! Kings 4-3. in OT
Just calling my shot on behalf of the Kings...
Sharks are going down tonight, as the teams are trending in opposite directions the last few games. Don’t be surprised when Quick stands on his head.
I thought the preview I read last night (and referred to in my game day post) said Esberg was in net?

Well
Don’t be surprised when Quick gets bored during the second period and stands on his head.

I’d pay to see that. And since I already pay way to much for cable, Quick, you best be standing on your head come the second period! And I mean literally, sir! LITERALLY!

Yeah, my bad....
It will be Ersberg in net. You guys get a break. :-)
But
will quick get up and do a headstand on his chair in the second? Inquiring minds want to know.

Given how Ersberg has played...
Quick might come in to relieve him and stand on his head…not quite what you hoped for…
(sorry for the double-post…this one’s in the _right_place_)
well, I did specify that he is only allowed to do so literally. So, I guess if he comes in he has to defend while literally standing on his head.
Upside down goaltending.

I’m not in the blackout area, and the tv listings always say that when there’s a Kings game. If you’re not in the blackout area pre-game should be on right now, so you could check.
it is … I checked … first time it showed that it wouldn’t be on … so weird

HE SHOOTS AND SCORES!
Well, it wouldn’t have taken any more than 60 minutes if the Kings didn’t play down 7-5 most of the game, but they got the two points anyway, and the didn’t even need their number one goaltender.
Thanks for al the fish.
