Go Sharks indeed.
First game in well over a week I haven’t had to miss due to work or other engagements. It’s good to be here.

Don't worry
I hated studying to when I was young, but now I’m paying for classes and actually want to get good grades.

It’s a lot easier to not study on someone else’s dime, haha

well his parents are paying … he gets good grades … but it would make ME feel better to see him study

Some people just don’t operate that way. I never did “busy work” in my classes, but aced tests … just how my brain works. I don’t care for studying much — but I did when I felt it necessary for a given class.

he’s going to SJSU … I wanted him to go to UC Santa Cruz … long story on why he isn’t … but ah well …
but I can relate to parents not paying – mine didn’t either, which is why I find it important to do so for my boys … :)

I hope to do the same
My parents made just enough that I couldn’t get in on financial aid easily, and not enough to pay for actual schoolin’. So, a few semesters of community college later, I found an entry-level job and managed to carve a career. lol … guess I shoulda studied :P
by xarexerax on Dec 9, 2009 7:44 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
yeah … I went with community college, then transferred to CSU – Hayward to finish up (many moons ago) … financial aid, student loans and working is how I paid for my schooling

Yeah. I’ve been looking at online courses to fill out a bit. I know I could benefit from it … but right now, finances don’t allow for such … turns out feeding the two-year-old is higher priority than engaging my flights of fancy, lol

Yeah…In order to study Marine Biology effectively you kinda need to be at a coastal school, though some schools have marine biology facilities WAY away from the main campus on the coast. eg. UC Davis

I dont’ see how the first relates to the second in anyway. You might as well say:
I’m watching the Sacramento Kings lose to San Antonio and now the Los Angeles Kings score against the Sharks.
I breathe air.

“It’s wednesday. I need beer.”

But there is a subtle difference.
When your favorite teams are losing (or something bad is happening), you NEED a beer.
When your favorite teams are winning (or something good is happening), you WANT a beer.
Difference :)

They need to put more pucks on net. Maybe they can put the Nichol, Malhotra, Orts line out on the pp for a bit. They’ll keep things simple. And it would send a message.

Our dead week is sorta this week, although it’s more dead days than anything. Last week was the final week of classes, where you don’t do anything in class, but all the papers are due and so it’s basically a week of continuous all-nighters.
We’re on the semester system, so it’s a lot longer.

I'd like Vlasic to hold the puck a bit longer
He has a tendancy to shoot as soon as he gets it. He skates well enough that he can wait for traffic or change the angle.

I actually think this has been one of his better game in the offensive zone. Moved pretty well, and wasn’t bad at holding the puck in.
All of our dmen haven’t been able to find shooting lanes to save their life as of late, which has hurt quite a bit.

He's not been bad, and he has helped when he's jumped in
It’s when he’s ON the point with the puck I’d like for him to wait.

I hate that chant.
Go to LA and talk to people about San Francisco or San Jose. People will smile and nod at you. Why? Because they could not possibly care less.
Go anywhere up here and talk about LA. People will go out of their way to tell you how much LA sucks and how the people down there are totally different than up here.
Maybe someday the bay area will grow up. I’m not holding my breath.
by cerise on Dec 10, 2009 11:36 AM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Having lived there and here, I can say with confidence that LA it IS a different place. The culture is different. That’s just a fact. It’s not a bad thing, it just is.
It didn’t do it for me down there. I made a lot of great friends and had some great times, but LA wasn’t for me. I love it here. I didn’t there. I couldn’t see myself living there for the rest of my life. Many people see it the other way. It’s just personal preference.
I don’t really mind seeing teams play off the long standing regional warfare between the southern and Bay Area parts of the state. (The far north has it’s own issues with the rest of us)
Do keep in mind that southern CA tired to form it’s own state at least once or twice early in our history. Add to that the water issues and we have a rip history for regionally based alliances making sports just that much more awesome.
That’s my take, anyway.

Hm, what counts as “far north”? I’m up here a ways, born and raised, and haven’t known most people to have an issue with the Bay Area. I do think it’s funny when people refer to that area as “NorCal” but that’s just because it’s a several-hour drive South to get there from where I am.
All that said, I’ve also been to LA, and I’d sooner move to Minnesota than there (and yes, I’ve been there, too — during winter, even).

Exactly
As a current resident of LA and a former resident of San Jose, there is definitely a culture change between the two places. The thing is, a lot of people from the Bay Area have gone and visited LA and Anaheim (thank you, Disneyland). Not very many people from LA have gone up to the Bay Area to visit San Francisco or San Jose (especially the latter, considering how most people around here haven’t even heard of it). So people from SoCal don’t really know that there is a difference.
Plus, there’s an established sports rivalry between the Bay Area and LA every since the Giants and Dodgers moved from New York to California. Unfortunately, the Giants haven’t had much success in the championship department since, and so LA people view them as a bit inconsequential. That has bled over to other sports, especially when you consider that the Kings have had a long history rife with HOF players, the Ducks have a Cup, and the Sharks have neither.
And then yeah, there’s the whole water and secession things working against them.

Ok — full disclosure. I grew up in LA, lived there until I was 20 and came up here for college. If it made sense professionally, I’d move back in an instant.
Culture change, I can agree with. Difference in people — sure. I wouldn’t go with the frequent characterization that people in LA are plastic and shallow though.
Shoot, I’ve hit worse traffic up here than I ever dealt with in LA. And the cloud of brown that I see hanging over the Silly Valley looks about as bad as the San Fernando Valley ever did in my lifetime.
Anyway, my point is mostly that the hockey rivalry thing is pretty one-sided. Go to a Sharks-Kings game in LA and I’m pretty sure you won’t hear a chant about beating San Jose. I don’t even remember that being a big deal when I was still into baseball, but things may have changed in the 20 years since I grew away from that.
Go to a Sharks-Kings game up here and at least 1/3 of the chanting is “BEAT L.A.”. It’s like everyone up here is just terribly bitter that a city that’s significantly bigger than the whole area exists in their state.
Another bit of disclosure: My old man worked for LADWP, so I had a front seat to all the Owens Valley crap. Even on that front, it’s pretty one-sided. People around there villify LA for taking water from the rivers. No one really pays attention to the fact that at least as of 1998, LA was by far the largest source of income for the Owens Valley — the hospitals in the area wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for LA.
Ok — I’m starting to work up a rant here. I’d better quit while I’m ahead.

While some people are probably bitter about LA, believe me, when it comes to anything BUT sports the rest of us could care less. LA does what it does, SF does what it does, and the rest of the state argues about how neither population center does what they want.
As for the chants, it’s how you see it. For many of us on the board, it’s just good natured regional fun based off a long standing baseball rivalry. (having been to a Dodgers home game in Giant’s colors I can tell you, it’s exists on both sides to this day.) The A’s and Angels also have a history, having spent a few seasons jockeying for first in their division. I’ve been to Angels stadium in A’s gear. I think I was safer at Dodger stadium in orange.)
For you, it seems a bit more personal. I hated when the Ducks won the cup, but that had nothing to do with their geographic location. It was that they were the Ducks, a hated division rival, and the won. And hated for their skill (and Pronger), not their home base. (but still Pronger)
And I was referring to water from the Delta. The Owens Valley is it’s own interesting bag of worms and blown up pipes.
Anyone who didn’t get some good ole CA history in school (because you grew up elsewhere) should really look this stuff up. The state has a very interesting and storied history.

I’m not sure I agree that it’s just a sports thing. A lot of the reasons why I think that are difficult to ground in anything other than my impression of the attitudes of people I talk to up here. Anyway, that’s no basis for a serious or rational disagreement, so I’ll quietly sweep that aside.
One anecdote though. I was flying back from Fort Worth to San Jose a couple of months ago and happened to sit a couple of rows in front of a girl who was Swedish and was going to California to check out schools. Everyone around her was talking about how nice the bay area is. When she mentioned that she wanted to check out LA, everyone around her got really quiet.
She picked up on this and asked why and they proceeded to say all sorts of nonsense about people in LA.
It’s very difficult for me to imagine that situation occurring with the two cities reversed.
On a lighter note, somewhere I have a postcard from a relative in Wyoming. It’s a sepia-toned photograph of two guys in overalls and cowboy hats swinging shovels at each other, captioned: “Water and mineral rights have remained a favorite pastime in the West”.
by cerise on Dec 10, 2009 5:53 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
It happens, trust me
You may not realize it because it rates lower on your radar, but people have a lot of negative things to say about the Bay Area as well. It goes both ways, we just see what resonates more. Took me awhile to figure that out when i was down there.
Besides, if you feel your city is being misrepresented to foreign visitors, you speak up! I would have told those people on the plane what it was really like.
I still don’t get the flip flops and wool pea coat thing though. I tried, I just don’t get it. Put on shoes if it’s that cold!

I considered it, but it sounded like it was pretty much in lock that she was going to SoCal. I figured I’d let her discover how wrong (or right) they were on her own.
by cerise on Dec 11, 2009 3:19 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Um,
Go to a Sharks-Kings game up here and at least 1/3 of the chanting is "BEAT L.A.". It’s like everyone up here is just terribly bitter that a city that’s significantly bigger than the whole area exists in their state.
I think you’re taking the Beat LA chant completely out of proportion. I’m pretty sure “Beat LA” refers to beating the LA Kings in the hockey game, not saying LA is stupid or something (whether that may be true or not…).
Reason why you won’t hear a chant about beating the Sharks? Beat SJ sounds completely stupid.
by idunno723 on Dec 10, 2009 4:30 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
We’ll agree to disagree then. I think the lack of a “Beat LA” analogue in Kings home games against the Sharks shows a lot more about the relationship between the two cities than “Beat SJ” sounding dumb.
by cerise on Dec 10, 2009 5:41 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe it shows something San Jose having a stronger fan base?
(Wow never done this argument before…)
okay agree to disagree then. I don’t see how beating a sports organization shows one’s hatred for a city. I mean I when people bring up the NorCal vs. SoCal argument I don’t hear them say, “The Dodgers are better than the Giants, The A’s are better than the Angels, the Chargers are better than the Raiders.”
Maybe the Bay Area has something against LA, but when I say “Beat LA” I don’t do it to show displeasure to the LA… just to the Kings.
by idunno723 on Dec 10, 2009 6:26 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Same.
I do like some LA teams as I have family down there (Lakers and Angels, specifically). But others (Kings, Ducks, Dodgers) I do not like. Its not a reflection of the area or the people, as I really do like SoCal as an area, so the rivalry is mainly about the sports teams.

It’s also much easier to yell “BEAT LA!” than it is to yell “BEAT THE LOS ANGELES BASED NHL TEAM KNOWN AS THE KINGS BECAUSE THEY ARE OUR DIVISION RIVALS AND NOT BECAUSE WE BARE ANY ILL WILL TOWARDS THEIR GENERAL GEOGRAPHIC LOCATION!”
That would just be silly. I mean, it doesn’t even rhyme!

I agree
Granted, I only saw a little part of the second period and most of the third, so I only saw him give up that one goal. But the way he was making saves was not the way that he normally does. I’d liken it to how Toskala played earlier today. When he’s off his game, he stays in his crease near his net, and doesn’t really challenge shooters that much. Tonight, he was making saves way out of his crease, being aggressive and playing with confidence. The Leafs won that game (barely, but then again, they are still the Leafs). Same thing with Nabokov. If he’s not on his game and aggressive, he’s horrible.

Meh
I blame Nabby’s bad performance on the BoC Kings Gameday article. It’s clearly a curse. We should have had the win. 3 of the 5 goals, were on Nabby tonight. I’d say that only the goal by Manny was actually weak on Ersberg’s part. Whatever, I actually thought the defense was decent today. Extremely good game by Vlasic, he looked great in transition tonight. Boyle was a bit off too. We missed Murray in the 3rd.

Correction
We missed Murray in the 2nd, also the 3rd and OT

how old does it get? this game was a microcosm of the sharks i know and love.
incredible plays, bad luck, big hits and hard skating followed by sustained periods of coasting and awful passing and decision making, defense that opts to wave the stick in passing lanes rather than pressure and force mistakes,
and in the end, a fail.
me hopes this is another rough stretch for the so called best team in hockey, but come on sharks, do something different.

I don’t care if they are #1 in the league … or #1 in the Western Conf … what I want is them to what out any kinks they may have so that THIS year they can win the Cup … the #1 is just a feel good thing. it’s the bottom line that matters and the bottom line = winning the Cup.

but is anyone else like me? You know the baseless optimism? Don’t get riled up after a loss?

I was at that hypothetical game too…and I went the distance. I almost got up and left after shortie number 3…but after that it was just comical.
I usually get angry after a loss for a few minutes, then I go on my way. The playoffs are a whole other story, though.

I was mad after the first shorty. I was incredulous after the second. I was laughing after the third. It was such a horrible game, it took on this surreal quality that you just could simply not believe that it was happening.

I stayed through the entire Chicago debacle as well. I ended up moving to sit next to my friend to mock the Sharks horrible play. And cheer the two goals, of course. That was fun, even if they were meaningless.

but not really mockingly. The best part of going to games is the goal scoring and that’s all i wanted to see. I was happy they got two!

Exactly
I only slightly mocked them, adding “you suck!” after the “HEY!” but that’s just leftover from my experience as a college football fan. I still jumped and cheered. I mean, hey, they scored! That’s not the easiest thing in the world.

Nabby gets hung out to dry
by his D on at least 3 (maybe 4) goals tonight…but everyone puts the loss on him. Hilarious. Nobody is saying shit about Pavs’ d-zone coverage on Kopitar’s goal or Murray failing to clear the screen on the first LA goal.
I guess it comes with the territory of being a goalie. Even if your team coughs up 3 times as many goals the goalie had no chance on, the one softy the goalie lets in is “the reason” they lost.
by BillytheSid on Dec 9, 2009 10:20 PM PST reply actions 0 recs
No no
I concur. The top 6 had goals tonight, but they were also completely uninterested in backchecking.
That’s worrisome

No one claimed that those goals were weak.
But the other 3 were. If you let in 3 weak goals, you’re not doing your job. (Note that if you remove the weak goals from the Sharks, specifically, Malhotra’s goal, the Sharks win.)
On Pavelski, yes he should have had Kopitar. That opportunity was in transition though, and he may have simply been outskated by Kopitar. on the first goal, yeah, Nabby was screened, and the shot was great, no one was pinning that on him.
Yes, the top 6 forwards were mediocre today in their own zone, but the defense was good enough for a win. The loss was on Nabby. Heatley looked miserable in general. Pavelski wasn’t his usual defensive wizard in the d-zone and Marleau’s speed just seemed somewhat ineffective. I thought Thornton and Clowe were the best top 6 forwards by far tonight.

While we're throwing people under the bus
I’ll actually put a bit of tonight on Todd McLellan. If this team is about earning ice time, his returns suck worse than Lehman Brothers. The third and fourth lines should have seen ice time and the top lines should have been riding pine for some of their mistakes.
But meh, there’s more than enough blame to go around. I just feel like stirring the pot a bit.

I can agree with that...
The first line really did not earn their ice time tonight, and yet they were still out there at crunch time. That’s why I was calling for the 3rd line to see some pp time tonight…maybe it could send a message…
Sometimes the impossible can become possible if you're AWESOME!

Maybe if the Sharks are winning
But even with the top 6’s half-hearted play, they have a better chance of scoring goals than the bottom 6. You’re shooting yourself in the foot if you put out Malhotra-Nichol-Ortmeyer on a PP while behind. I personally wanted Vlasic out there more. He looked excellent today in all 3 zones and even had a big hit.
