Is this the game that makes or breaks the year? Could it be that one sixty minute effort renders all the previous showings inadequate, that a handful of red lights in the wrong direction sheds light on where this organization will go?
Tonight is as big as it gets in February. But in the grand scheme of things, it isn't Calgary, Anaheim, or Dallas. It's light years away from Detroit.
You have a Sharks team riddled with inconsistencies since the All Star Break, searching for their mojo. Where are the shots on goal that were in abundance to kick off the year? Can Nabokov manage to close a five hole that has seen more action than Eva Angelina's? How does McLellan drive home the point "clear the puck up the boards" when the team seems thrilled to give the opposition extra chances in the way of botched clears? Will the breakout ever reach the deadly form that caused the phrase "transition game" to elicit a metaphorical six to midnight when we were a younger version of our current selves?
So many questions, and yet, the answer isn't going to come out of the woods today. It requires constant vigilance, a bitch of a beast to track down. We may get a sighting in Boston, but only for a brief moment. April is where we see it in it's entirety, May is the long and grueling hunt, and June is where (God willing) the heavy ammunition comes out to play.
We're a fickle breed, us Sharks fans. So used to heartbreak, we seem to thrive in the situation. Three losses in a row sends us into a tailspin. We're grasping at straws, contemplating where things went wrong. Is it not time to enjoy the ride? Thirty games remain in the regular season seas, tides that have been navigated successfully for years in San Jose. Tonight is big yes, but do not mistake it as a defining act. Tonight's game is a mere mortal, destined to be lost in the sands of time by this date next month.
4 PM in Boston is just a stepping stone leading up to the Church of Lord Stanley. Many men have slipped on these stones, only to pick themselves up and find a way to reach the summit. A summit that is immortal; an expanse can be seen from all corners of this great country. A monument that shakes the foundation of cities, brings grown men to tears, provides prosperous rivers and streams while reducing others to a barren wasteland.
It's a road we have yet to traverse successfully, but gut instinct says tonight is where we find ourselves back on that trail. Yes the compass will cause conundrums in the future- bearings lost, maps misplaced. But only for a moment.
As for tonight? Tonight is where the big dogs show who has the bigger bite.
Go Sharks.

LET'S GO SHARKS!
All I’m asking for tonight is 60 minutes of solid hockey. That and 2 points. The same things I ask for every game. And while this is just one more game, it’s one we’re going to be hearing about for the rest of the season. Win, lose or, well there aren’t any more draws in Gary Bettman’s NHL but you get the point.
SInce I sadly won’t be around for the rest of the day, here’s this. Hooray for DVRs.
It takes a big man to cry and it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man. -Jamie Baker
The K Man on the ball in the early morn. If only we got that kind of effort from the Sharks lately we’d be have a whole lot less to worry about.
Are you going to be in the thread today? Who else is going to be here? Why am I asking so many questions? Is it really time for my second expresso? Is anyone else pumped to see the Sharks throw down and break out of this slump?
Chyeahuhhh-HOOOOOOO
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Best time to have a slump is now. There were some problems with the Sharks play as of late, and it’s better to fix those problems before the playoffs start. I have a feeling Todd was pretty pissed at the team for their play in Columbus… he’s gotta figure out how to motivate this team down the stretch.
That being said, a nice point streak which started with 2 tonight would be awesome.

I will try to be on the thread
But there’s a problem – I have to be at work for a stupid meeting tonight that previously wasn’t on our schedule! #%$@!!!!!!!
Sooooo… I’ll probably be unable to watch a single bit of the game. I’ll have on the live play tracker from NHL.com, but I might not even be able to do radio.
You have no idea how pissed I am about this.
Worst part – the game wrap. Open invitation to all and sundry – mymclife? Plank? TCY?
GO SHARKS.

Who else is going to be here?
I’m going to be watching the game from work if there is a thread for it. Otherwise, I’m leaving work early. I hate early games! And will try to be here as well. But have to somehow look busy while watching the game and posting.

Give Semmy that confidence of not getting pulled after a horrible game,
he deserves it, he’s been playing great, I mean good.
Please read comment with appropriate inflection (i.e. the narrator at the end of the classic Batman show)
WILL our heroes win this battle of potential cup contenders?
CAN Matt Taylor convince his boss to let him leave work early to watch the game?
SHOULD Matt gloat incessantly in close proximity to his co-workers currently visiting from the Boston office?
Find out tonight, at 4:00. (UGH.)
Seriously though, last time there was a 4PM start that I had to miss because of the commute, the Sharks were down 4-0 to Detroit before I got to Milbrae. Hopefully that’s not a sign.
Go Sharks.

Before I run off to school...
The amount of coverage this game is getting is INSANE. Watching the Devils/Rags game yesterday, the Versus announcers spent an entire intermission analyzing The Trade, including what each player involved in that brought to the table, and in the Bruins’ case, all the subsequent trades that they had to make afterwards.
Then, going to NHL.com, there is a flash tab reserved for each of the two teams, and has been for more than a day. There is a guy writing a freaking blog dedicated to talking about the lead-up to the game. The only comparable times where the NHL has dedicated this much attention to a regular season game were the Pens/Wings rematch and the Winter Freaking Classic.
But seriously, if this game draws huge ratings on Versus, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Sharks get more nationally televised games next year, as well as move up the list for teams to participate in the Winter Classic. The current argument is that the Sharks don’t have enough national appeal, and the fact that a large majority of non-Sharks hockey fans I’ve talked to are going to watch this game refutes that.
the Versus announcers spent an entire intermission analyzing The Trad
Ah, screw Versus. I watched the same thing on NHL Center Ice on Sunday night- they probably stole the script ;)

It its anything like how the sharks have played lately,
we won’t be missing much. But hey who knows maybe I’ll make it home in time to see them lose in the opening minutes of overtime.

But Mina might not be. She’s in the hospital and I don’t know if they get Versus.

According to Dan Rosen at NHL.com
Tonight’s refs are Chris Rooney and Don Van Massenhoven. Rooney, known primarily for trying to thwart Ferris Bueller’s various school-ditching efforts, is also famous for being the ref that issued the game misconduct to a certain Mr. Thornton about five minutes into the game.
Is the NHL trying to hype this game or what?
I suppose it could be worse
could be Frasier and Van Massenhoven

Although
The game that Thornton got ejected in, the Sharks ended up winning 6-2. If that’s what it takes to beat the Bruins by that large of a margin, I can’t say that I would be too opposed to it.
I believe Langfeld had two goals
I think that says more about that game than JT’s early departure lol

I think this is a good test for the team AND the fans
It’s like a small sampling of what it might be like if the Sharks and B’s met in the SCF. I’m somewhat annoyed with the excessive coverage, primarily focusing on Joe Thornton with a Bruins bias. However, I need to be able to sweep all that nonsense aside and just try and enjoy the game for what it is…a mid-February regular season match between two really good teams.
I'm a happy seal
by SwisherThresher on Feb 10, 2009 3:25 PM PST up reply actions
Oh, for serious
I could get the hype for the Winter Classic. The NHL spent millions on their ice truck thing, there were new/old jerseys, playing at Wrigley Field, etc. I could get the hype for a Stanley Cup Finals rematch. But two (admittedly very good) teams linked only by a trade that happened late 2005? Yeah, I think they might want to hold off on the crazy amount of coverage.
Plus, hearing Bruins fans/random members of the media try to justify the lopsided Thornton trade was amusing at first, but now is just annoying. Seriously, trading Thornton did not lead to Chara, they had enough cap room to sign him before that. Savard? Sure, but that’s because of the need for a #1 center. The B’s could have just as easily had the same lineup only with Thornton instead of Savard, even with the cap. And I know that I’d much rather have Thornton than Savard any day of the week.
Sorry about that. The amount of justification I’m hearing is getting to the “absurd” level.
Sorry about that. The amount of justification I’m hearing is getting to the "absurd" level.
It’s funny too, because if the Bruins weren’t playing excellent hockey this year the game wouldn’t get hype at all. Tim Thomas is probably the biggest reason Boston is where they are at this point in the year.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Which, coincidentally, had nothing to do with the Thornton trade- the guy may be a douche (anyone see those clips of him taking shots at opposing forwards?), but you can’t doubt his talent and relatively insane rise to the top.

hmmmm
Not all that disappointed in the boys play that period. Lot’s of finishing of checks, good effort all around. Too many turnovers, but alot of that is due to Boston’s play.
Plain and simple, that first goal is a result of Nabby being waaaaay out of postion. Everytime he runs around behind the net he reminds me of Irby. He needs a tether that will keep him closer.
Fear the Fin....where being an old guy isn't all bad
sounds a lot like Tim Thomas. That guy still makes me nervous.

Detroit in 07 has had me on edge whenever Nabby plays the puck. A tether sounds like a good plan to me Dave.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
1) Pavelski has had trouble clearing the zone lately- I’m pretty sure that led to a goal against Carolina as well, but my pessimism just may be out of control right now.
2) Setoguchi, while not producing on the scoresheet, has been really ramping up the physical play. He delivered a nice smack to Chara on the forecheck, and while it didn’t lead to a goal, it did lead to a chance.
3) Nabokov needs some fucking help down low- we’re not boxing out people at all, failing to tie up sticks. It’s almost embarassing how many botched clears there have been. Blake’s effort on the second goal is not worth five million dollars- he makes a half assed attempt to get the puck out of the zone (avoiding a hit mind you), and then gets absolutely burned by Lucic to set up the goal. Vomit blog.
4) Whatever the shot total is, it’s a goddamn liar. Boston has looked hands down better than us.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

i agree, being outskated. first period jitters in a over-hyped game. these west coast boys dont get this much attention all year, bound to grip their sticks a little hard.

neutral zone turnovers on the linechanges are killing us in the last 3-4 games.

he shoots more this season than under R wilson, but still has a pass first metality most nights. Joe has a nifty backhand play that has found the crossbar a few times, but he is playing in front of the net a lot more than the halfboards under MC’s new system.

joe
takes 2 guys every time they are in the zone. gooch or marleau (money is on gooch, sorry cappy, i have your jersey, but you are sleepy lately) should find some space and find the net. once or twice a game joe gains a little space and teleports a pass to someone cross ice. hopefully not NG Grier.

Completely agree on Marleau- he’s avoided a couple hits tonight that have given up possession in our zone.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
OKay
I’m pretty happy with our play, if not the score during that period. My mantra, use the body, seems to have gotten through. I see lots of hard work, if nothing else.

Agree with ya Dave- not looking ahead, but are you pumped to see Brian “I Got A Better Glove Save Than OJ” Boucher out there tomorrow?
Second period was solid enough for me. Now about this whole scoring thing…..
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
I am SO ready
to see Bouch tomorrow. Personally, I’d have started him tonite. But hey, you see what my opinion counts for. Good news is that he’s starting tomorrow when my house is invaded by Pens fans

Count me in on that as well
Boucher is honestly one of my favorite players, if only because he’s so freaking hilarious (same reason why I like Lukowich so much). The fact that he totally rocks at goaltending doesn’t hurt either.
Yeah, that Christmas video was pure gold. Luko doing his best metal impression and Boucher pretending to be a Ruskie? Love it.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Boucher’s requirements for being a “Finatic” were pretty awesome as well. “You have to know all their injuries, ever. And none of that upper-body, lower-body. Follow them to Starbucks, if you have to.”
And the Lukowich when he was mic’d up a practice was pretty funny as well – “Blocked shot! Blocked shot!”
Definitely. Like you mentioned before, Luko needs to come back soon. JR too- I think we tend to forget that two amazing depth players have been out of the lineup for what seems like forever.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
I could swallow
(careful Plank) a loss if we play like this…..it’s that shitty play in Colombus that KILLED me. We are going into the 3rd with a chance. They just need to keep it up…keep shooting, keep possession in the offensive zone, keep hitting.

I was just about to comment on that – I don’t think he was playing for a large majority of the second period. Oh great, more offensively-challenged Grier. So fun.
How much offense do the Sharks expect from Grier? From what I’ve seen, his strengths lie in his defensive awareness and penalty killing.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
It’s not that we expect him to create, we expect him to finish his chances.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Fair enough, I just feel like he’s more valuable preventing goals than he is scoring them.
I have as many wins in a Capitals uniform as Michael Belhumeur does.
Oh definitely- I guess you just have to see the types of opportunities he gets. We don’t expect him to create goals, but when he misses tap ins it gets painful.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Not much
Like you said, he’s mainly the PK/defensive guy. But he gets all these amazing chances and just cannot seem to hit the net.
Like, failing to score on an empty netter. Nobody was there defending him, he had a clear shot, and he hit the post.
I knew someone would bring that up! But they seem to forget he’s not the only one incapable of scoring on an empty net. :)

What I took from ESPN mobile updates and Plank’s text commentary.
1. Vlasic can block shots good.

4. Tim Thomas officially sucks cheese.
