After the first period last night I was about ready to throw in the towel. Blake's goal was about as flukey as they come, the Sharks were getting pushed around physically, and without Nabokov coming up with some big time stops it could easily have been 4-0.
Thankfully Sweeney Todd lit a fire during intermission, and the Sharks came out in the second running on all cylinders. The 5 on 3 kill* at the beginning of the period effectively turned the tide for the rest of the game, and saw the ice tilt towards Thomas the next 35 minutes. No Goal Grier (h/t to CTGray of Couch Tarts) even banked in on an empty net opportunity. Good freaking times.
*Did Boston even manage a shot? Probably, but that might have been the greatest 5 on 3 since that time you and your buddies got drunk with those quintuplets from Gamma Phi.
The Penguins have been struggling lately, which is somewhat surprising considering they have two of the best players in the league. It's also the first time the two teams have played since JR uttered his crybaby comment about Sid, but as we all know, JR won't be playing tonight. Could be a good thing- I doubt JR is looking to have any more kids, but this type of situation probably wouldn't help the cause.
[Editor's Note]: Remember your SPG Picks for a chance to win a Sharks Banner courtesy of Carrol's Cove; also remember to get your questions in by midnight for FTF's Q & A with Logan Couture.
You hate to piss on your friends (unless you're into that or something), but The Pensblog has their work cut out for them going forward. Without adding a winger who can compliment Sid & Geno at the deadline, it's going to be a hard time jobbin'.
Regardless, last night's effort has me breathing fine again. Haven't heard official word as of this posting, but with the work Nabby was subjected to tonight, it's a safe bet we'll finally get a chance to see Boucher in the nets. A long time coming folks.
To wrap this up, here's how the Sharks have fared in the second game of back to backs this year:
| Team | Home/Away | Score | Decision |
| Los Angeles | Away | 1-0 | Win |
| Philadelphia | Home | 4-5 | Win, OT |
| Tampa Bay | Away | 3-0 | Win |
| Phoenix | Away | 2-4 | Loss |
| Nashville | Away | 4-1 | Win |
| Phoenix | Away | 3-2 | Win |
| Detroit | Away | 0-6 | Loss |
| Vancouver | Away | 4-2 | Win |
A lot of away games (being on the far corner of the West Coast sucks don't it), but the results seem fairly positive if you can banish that hellacious Detroit game from memory.
Look for a FTF recap after the game that borrows a few tricks from some our internet brethren. Here's to taking the momentum from last night and running with it for the duration of this road trip.
Go Sharks.

Dear The Todd,
Nabby played well last night and deserves a night off. Please start Bouch tonight, I think he might be going a little crazier sitting on the bench.
Hearts,
Lurker Shark
P.S. Whatever you did to get the boys playing like the last 30 minutes last night, keep doing that. Maybe they need another five figure dinner.

Nice, I don’t have a jersey yet, was going to buy a Sharks one in March, seeing as it’ll mean more to me if I actually buy a SJSharks jersey IN San Jose. Thought it’d be appropiate!
But… ahh… I shall root for the Pens, me thinks. The Sharks are way too cocky for my taste after that win last night! :P

If you guys get a chance, pop over to FrankD’s site tonight and give him some love (or a winger to bury Crosby and Malkin’s passes). He hooked us up with Carrol’s Cove earlier this year.
Thanks again D.

I’ll be online for at least the 1st period. However, if tonight follows the same trend as last night, I will again bail out early for the good of the team and the FTF faithful. Go, Sharks!

resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Yeah, when he and Semenov were on the same shift together, it was downright hilarious.
From my game recap from that preseason game:
He didn’t end up getting very much ice time, but we spent a good deal of time devising offensive plays for the Sharks that went something like this: “OK, Alex Semenov skates into the offensive zone and calls for a pass. Then out of nowhere Ryan Vesce jumps out of Semenov’s breast pocket, steals the puck, and scores!”

I’m not sure it’s that interesting or revealing, but I did make 2 graphs comparing this year’s Sharks team with each of the last two cup-winners through 51 games. Everything is based on regulation results, as I think that’s a better indicator of playoff success.
If graphical stat comparisons is your cup of tea, enjoy.

I suppose
Since it’s too quick into the game – but the last time we played, we limited the Pens to something like 11 shots… I’ll go look it up, but the final 2-1 score was WAY deceiving.
Not trying to gloat, but I was pleasantly surprised by that game in October – esp. because I splurged on primo seats that night.

Only Malkin for me
At least at his price (almost 10 million). Malkin actually makes a little more than Crosby ($9 mil) for this season, and then they’re even for the next few.
Imagine having two Ovechkin salaries on your team – no wonder there’s talk about unloading Malkin.

not sure I get the Malkin love
I love him as a player, but he kind of looks like a monkey. But he gets mad puck-bunny attention. Maybe it has something to do with the picture of him making out with his teammate, or that other one of him licking that chick’s tongue. They know he puts out.

People were only there to see Avery.
Perhaps it’s early, though — I know the Ducks have started with rather empty houses because of an insistence on 7:05 start times and the horrific traffic on all three surrounding freeways.

7:05? No wonder
I got stuck in traffic by that arena so many times, I hated driving past that it.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Yeah, it’s horrible, and I think it’s contributed some to Anaheim’s lackluster starts to home games. No crowd = no energy.
Another case of the Ducks kissing the east coast’s ass at the expense of the people actually attending the games. And I don’t think it matters to sleeping east-coasters one bit.

God I hate the shootout.
I get home in time for that. Ugh.

Ugh
They follow a great game with one that completely sucks. Seriously, how many turnovers can they have? I especially love the multiple ones to Malkin in the defensive zone – did they want the guy to score a goal?
A lot of the guys looked lazy tonight – several times I saw Clowe just glide into a defensive position. Even Cheechoo’s seemingly boundless supply of energy disappeared. I guess you could blame it on the second night of a back-to-back, but still.
And then what is up with Blake and Boyle taking penalties penalties? And why do the refs seem to swallow their whistles whenever it would benefit the Sharks? I mean, I get that you want parity in the league, but come on. The Sharks have had TWO power plays in the last two games, while the opponents have had eight. And I’m not noticing any change in the Sharks’ play that would make them becomes more penalized.
The Michalek/Pavelski combo continues to do well, barring a shootout. Seriously, I need to see them actually try to HIT THE NET when its their respective turns.
Oh, and Grier fails yet again. I guess last night was just an anomaly.
Okay
so I’m convinced you are my daughter from a former life. I’ll just wait from not on to post after a game until you are done. You save me so much typing.
I mean, c’mon….I kept waiting for that effort from last night to appear…expecting it at any moment. Suddenly, the buzzer/horn sounds and I realize it ain’t gonna happen. WTF?
If it wasn’t for Bouch, that game would have been UGLY.

We need more Bouch.

I agree (no surprise)
He just looked calm all night. Never, even when it was at the worst, did he look out of control. I just like the way he plays out there

I've said this before
so don’t get me wrong. I have NOTHING against Nabby. It’s just that Bouch always seems to have it under control. Sometimes Nabby seems frantic….and I never get that feeling with Bouch

Unfortunately all I saw of him was the last half of OT and the SO.
He still did one hell of a job tonight. It’s even more impressive he did it after not having played in a game in over a month.

I would honestly like to see Boucher get more work
but I understand Nabby can be a stubborn control freak (said with much adoration)

Yeah, the man never wants to sit.
Todd just needs to convince him the less he plays now, the more he’ll get to play come April and beyond.

I understand Nabby's point of view
But you’re so right…he needs to play more. AND it won’t hurt Nabby to sit occasionally. Maybe if he does those early soft shots will diminish.

My thoughts exactly.
Nabby hasn’t looked quite as sharp as he usually does. The extra rest would probably do him good. And we’re fortunate enough to have one hell of a backup.

Haha
I actually probably had more to rant about (probably about Joe’s inability to handle the puck in his own zone), but pizza was ready and I mellowed out while watching the mind-trash that is American Idol.
Oh, and Boucher was great. There weren’t the AMAZING saves that Nabby is known to make, but that’s because Bouch is generally positioned better and doesn’t have to. The fact that the only pucks that went into the net were from Blake (ugh, he had a bad game tonight) and a SO goal from Cindy is a good sign.
On a more positive note, I’m revisiting the Bruins game, and was listening to the podcast recap from Rusanowsky, and heard this gem from an interview between Jamie and Nabby about whether Nabby prepared differently for different players or not:
Jamie: So, if I ever come out one day and I’m on the ice, and I come down to shoot, you’re not going to focus on me as a shooter, you’re just going to play it normal, right?
Nabby: Right, I’m going to take my gloves off because I know you’re going to miss the net.
Jamie: You can, you may, but you’re not going to score on me, right?
Nabby: See, you really like my line. You really do.
Uh..,.
remember when the Sharks would get a clutch goal and force OT? And, um, they did that thing with the puck, and at the very end of the game, it would.. and um, the puck goes past the other goalie and the Sharks win?… You.. you remember that?

yeah, that was aaawesome

I tried to tell you early that I jinxed, my bad.
I left with 10 minutes left in the game, not because I wanted to (school), but technically that should’ve unjinxed the original jinx.
