Blink 182 Is Reunited, Obviously Something Is Wrong With The World. SHARKS LOSE.

[Editor's Note]: In homage to our friends at The Pensblog we decided to do a little recap jobber style. Hope you enjoy it.

Let's not beat around the bush here- the Sharks are in a funk. You don't expect to win every night, but when four out of the last five end up in the loss column there is cause for concern.

It's February. Lukowich, Roenick, and Mitchell are out. San Jose just came off a huge win against Boston last night, they're gassed. We understand that.

But the body needs to be layed on. Our forecheck needs to be stronger. Boucher has to get some support down low. The neutral zone turnovers need to be handed a cease and desist order. Tonight was an improvement from some previous outings, but just an improvement against a struggling team doesn't cut it.

It's just one more reason to wring our hands and worry about April. To quote Cher, "We will survive." It would just be nice to see that sooner rather than later.

And hey, these things could be worse:

Douches_medium

Even Therrien is a little embarassed

Swisher Thresher FTW in the gameday thread:

remember when the Sharks would get a clutch goal and force OT? And, um, they did that thing with the puck, and at the very end of the game, it would.. and um, the puck goes past the other goalie and the Sharks win?… You.. you remember that?
92mfarley_medium

yeah, that was aaawesome

Star-divide

Picture_20_medium

The first line hops out on the ice and generates a solid scoring chance. Thornton hits Malkin all alone in front for the one timer, but Fleury gobbles it up.

You could tell Mellon Arena was on it’s heels in the first, but two shifts by Sykora and Malkin get the crowd into it.

Seto lights somebody up again. Has he been rooming with Murray this road trip?

You wouldn’t say the Sharks looked slow as much as you would say they looked in control during the first half of the period. When you’re in control things look slow, whatever that means.

At one point you asked yourself whether the Pens were going to lay on the body behind their net or clear out people in front. Fleury was seeing more ass than Christian Troy.

But just when you thought the Pens were mailing this one in, they get a nice opportunity off the rush. Exhibit A why you shouldn’t worship Satan kids. Boucher with the glove save.

Simpsonbouch_medium

Crosby decides to show up in the first and generates a scoring opportunity. The teams job around for a bit, with the Pens icing the puck about fifteen times to end the period.

Picture_21_medium
The first line can’t cycle for the first time all night, and with the Pens moving the puck you think back to the Detroit loss where the Sharks ran out of gas. Luckily Boucher popped some Viagra and was up to the task.

Blake gets called for a hooking call that’s questionable at best. Crosby dicks around in his own zone for half the powerplay, and the Sharks follow with two great shorthanded chances. Killed.
With nothing going on after that, Clowe tries to stir the pot in front of Fleury. No takers.

Can't blame em'.

Boucher continues his best Turco impression, constantly playing pucks behind the net all night. Thankfully he’s not a douche bag otherwise we might have a problem in our locker room.  Crosby makes a nice cross-ice pass to some jobber winger who’s too distracted by Blake’s harmonica to get it on net.

The teams go back and forth, with the Sharks pushing at the end of the period. Vesce has a nice opportunity with two minutes on the clock, but gets tripped up. No call. Pens head down the ice and job one into the net off Rob Blake’s stick.

Picture_6_medium

1-0 PENS

Vomit.

Picture_22_medium

Sharks come out and get two chances. Setoguchi with a nice pass to find Pavelski who smokes it like Michael Phelps......wide. Fleury follows it up with a wicked glove save on Michalek who tries to go high glove side. Did he watch last night’s game against Boston? Sick save.

Setoguchi blows up Thomas and Stall gets his panties in a bunch. The power play unit strolls out for the first time all night.

Ehrhoff takes one in the neck, but Thomas is too shaken to do anything after smelling some Gooch. Boyle with an unreal backcheck to break that up.  Why both shorthanded units had better chances than their power play brethren we’ll never know. Killed.

The Sharks swarm the net a little later, but MAF is denying you as adamantly as your girlfriend when she's on her period. Nothing's going in.

With ten minutes left Mr. Kennedy drives the net and gets thrown into the cage.

2140592305_ddf71c2bf3_o_medium

Douche.

Just about as you’re getting drunk enough to call your ex girlfriend to see if you could score at least once tonight, Dan Boyle goes coast to coast faster than your first time with a woman. He throws the puck at the net, it bounces around for a bit, and Pavelski rifles one in.

Rambo_medium

1-1

Pens flood the zone afterwards, but Boucher does his best R. Kelly impression and urinates all over the puck. What a goaltender.

Rick Allen eventually makes an appearance on the scene as Clowe goes to the box.

During the PK Blake throws Malkin into the net and Crosby whines to the refs. He then proceeds to skate to the bench after seeing JR waiting in the rafters.

Jrsting_medium

Grier with a breakaway late in the kill. Will he bury it?

Ha.

Picture_23_medium

Overtime starts with Blake and Malkin playing some physical hockey in front of the net. Hand goes up, we still don’t know what happened to deserve the call. Sharks head out on the PK.

Boucher continues to hold the fort as he has all night. Good God he’s going to reel in a mammoth contract this upcoming offseason. Killed.

Some more shit happens, who knows. Thornton has three shots in OT, setting a career high.

Brian Boitano comes out for the skills competition.

Boitano_medium

SHOOTOUT

Boucher stands his ground on Sykora, Michalek rifles one over the net.

Geno throws a turd at Boucher. No dice. Joe Pavs denied by Fleury.

Crosby throws one five hole and beats Boucher. Dan Boyle comes down and surprises us all by making his patented move, except he goes backhand for a change. Fleury spreads his legs wider than Madonna in the 90's…..

GAME.

Miscellaneous

  • Whatevs.
  • At times the breakout was thinner than Ryan Getzlaf's hairline.
  • Blake with two goals on his hands the last two games (Lucic's second last night). It’s still early, but is this a concern?
  • Much like the first period last night against Boston, the Pens defense did a good job of blocking shots from the point.
  • Boucher’s rebound control is unreal.
  • Patty was pretty quiet tonight and has been lately (besides his huge goal last night). He’s a streaky scorer (much like Cheech), so when he finally turns it back on watch out.

Go Sharks.

HOLY TOLEDO

This is the best thing I’ve read all year. Definitely a +1 to you, Jason – and that’s not ass-kissing.

LOVE the Photoshops – Boucher O.J. and Rambo Joe Pa are pure win.

Astute analysis – funny but to the point. You’re ahead of the curve on Rob Blake – could he be pulling a Mats Sundin (who was in the box for many a game-winning power play goal)?

Overall, I’m not too concerned about this game – but like you said (and as AP has pointed out), the Sharks are 1-2-2 in their last 5. But hey – getting 3 out of 4 points in 24 hours ain’t too shabby, Nabby.

GO PLANK… I mean, GO SHARKS.

Ditto on Dan and Jamie

I was in the car for the third period, heading to dinner – somehow missed Joe Pa’s goal, but no matter. Had the Pens announcers, with their MarLEAU pronunciation, for periods 1 and 2.

Trivia

The last 3 meetings between the Sharks and Penguins have all been 2-1, with two going to the shootout.

Also = Sidney Crosby still doesn’t have a legitimate goal against us, so tonight’s shootout winner will have to suffice for his ego.

It's too bad JR wasn't playing tonight.

It would have been entertaining to see Crosby try to jump him. If JR can take down Carcillo, I think he can handle Crosby, even with the rebuilt shoulder.

I only watched the third period because there was this “World Cup qualifying soccer match” thing going on, but….

Boucher was solid.
PK was solid.
Fleury was solid (unfortunately).

And that’s as far as my analytical skills go with a pitcher of Sierra Nevada in me.

Nice wrap

Very Pensblog-esque, although as a reminder that the Sharks lost it slightly hurts.

And now for some analysis (because it really wouldn’t be me if I didn’t post analysis at least twice per game):

I overlooked this at first, but our entire fourth line consists of WorSharks. You could debate as to whether or not Lemieux is considered a call-up, but the fact is all those guys have had little NHL experience for the past five years.* That line created a bunch of scoring chances, but just wasn’t able to connect while playing against high-level players.

*Ahh, Lemieux, always making me have to have a caveat.

As for the penalty discrepancy, I have finally discovered the answer: East Coast Bias. And yes, I am being completely serious.

Generally, the East builds their teams around skilled forwards and defensive defensemen. Very few offensive-minded defensemen in the East, which makes the D stay on the blue line during plays. You switch over to the West, and a lot of the teams are built with power forwards and strong D. Teams are very physical, with the first line forwards generally being big and strong, with less pure skill than the typical first line in the east (there are always exceptions). The D is much more active in the play; Detroit, San Jose, and even Captain Elbows to an extent all have their defensemen create offense every game. There may have only been one or two games this entire season where a Sharks defenseman did not get a point.

So while in the West, its no surprise to see some defenseman pinching or going to the net, in the East teams don’t really see that often (see the Boston game blog by the NHL.com guy – he was completely amazed by Boyle carrying the puck over the blue line, a rather ordinary occurrence for us Sharks fans).

Anyways, my point is that the refs in the East, because they tend to stay in that conference, don’t normally officiate games with the hard-hitting, active D style of play that the West favors. It probably threw them off that Blake was so near Fleury, or that Boyle had the puck for extended periods of time. And since they haven’t seen that often, they pay more attention and therefore will call tighter on those guys than during the rest of the game.

Or I could just be pulling this out of my ass and Blake and Boyle are getting sloppy, I don’t know.

by mymclife on Feb 11, 2009 11:06 PM PST reply actions

Good observations.

The sad part of that is Boyle spent his whole career until now in the East. Maybe he slipped under the radar because he was in Florida?

I missed most of the game but it sounded like Blake had a really bad night. I’m willing to give Danny a pass since, well, he is Dan Boyle and he’s still not 100 or maybe even 90%.

It takes a big man to cry and it takes a bigger man to laugh at that man. -Jamie Baker

by Lurker Shark on Feb 12, 2009 6:33 AM PST up reply actions

Well, I think that Tampa Bay didn’t use his talents to the same extent that the Sharks are – letting him fully jump into the play as a fourth forward, and using one of the forwards (i.e. Marleau or Pavelski) take his spot on the point. And plus, its Tampa Bay. How much do you really hear about the team, besides the fact that its a complete circus?

And yeah, Blake was horrible last night. Single-handedly responsible for the goal, taking two penalties when the Sharks were down, creating very little offense and being rather poor defensively. Its looked like both Boyle and Blake haven’t been playing 100% for the past few games, which is a concern.

Lukowich, please come back now!

Amazing write up Jason.

I feel like I’ve been in a funk too, as I’ve missed two games in a row after watching every one all season (with the exception of the Chicago loss). This road trip can’t end soon enough.

I think the biggest problem with the Sharks has been their transition play. They’ve been ok in their own end, they’ve been good in the offensive end, but they cant manage to get from one end to the other effectively. They’ve been making some pretty bonehead plays in transition (i.e. v. Columbus), and our zone entry has been pitiful. The Sharks can out skill teams, but why do they try to do that against undermanned, smaller squads? Get the puck down low and use the body. We saw what this kind of play could do against even the best teams (Boston). The Sharks forwards need to be more physical on the forecheck, too.

I’m ranting, but I’m not happy right now.

I’ve read a lot of places that people arent excited to get Torrey Mitchell back. We are already deep and why would we need him back.

I am excited to get Mitchell back. Why? Because Mike Grier misses golden opportunities that I dont think Mitchell would.

I think Mitchell would have buried at least one of those 3rd period chances that Grier had.

great write up

missed the 3rd, would have punched the tv if i saw No Goal Grier miss another cherry chance. poor guy has a brilliant hockey mind and in m opinion will one day be an incredible coach- he finds himself in the right place every time his skates hit the ice. he just cant finish for beans. no handles, and his skating frame is sloppy.

was it me or is semenov outplaying Rob freaking Blake right now? i mean, i am nervous seeing number 4 out there, but feel alright when 21 is on d. weird.

speaking of D, IMO Crankshaft has been the most consistent Dman for the fins that past few weeks hands down. great body position (demolishing forwards or not) good stick work, and delivering shots to the net consistently. playing alongside Vlasic has really brought out the best in Murray, great to see the big swede playing well.
