0-2-0 @ the Rock
We won’t be able to improve that until the 2010-11 season, since it’s been 2 seasons since the Devils have come to SJ.

My problem with Nabokov right now is his absolute zeal for challenging shooters. I understand he’s cutting off the angle, but when he gives up huge rebounds that lead to goals it’s enough to make me pull my hair out.

Exactly, and that’s where I think McLellan needs to seriously consider giving Boucher more time on the ice. I haven’t been an advocate for handing over the starting role (yet), but we need to take advantage of a wonderful opportunity we have.
Fact is, Nabokov hasn’t earned his minutes lately, and Boucher has.

Interesting stuff in David Pollack's
game write up last night
McLellan would not single out Nabokov’s performance, saying the current problems were a total team effort.
“Nabby’s got to be better. But our forwards have to be better, our defensemen have to be better, our coaching staff has to be better,” McLellan said. “We’re all tied to it together.”
When Nabokov hit rough spots earlier this season, McLellan didn’t cut back on the goalie’s workload, choosing to let him play through whatever the problem might have been. The coach hedged Sunday night.
“We’re flying home tonight,” McLellan said, “and we’ll figure out what we’re doing on Tuesday.”

maybe
Tmac wanted nabby to get a little rhythm going by letting him succeed and fail a bit. that whole even keel philosophy.
which would be 180 from RW change every line if someone miss handled one play.
though i do think bouch should ( and will) get a bit more action down the stretch here.

I like that philosophy for sure, and am glad he didn’t get pulled today. Not a big fan of pulling goaltenders no matter how many goals they’ve given up in the first period (barring something extraordinary), and with a 3-2 game going into the second it would be ridiculous to make the change.
I just don’t understand why we see Boucher once every month, especially with Nabby’s current play. He’s been way up and down this season and honestly it’s been that way for the majority of his career.

Okay. I'm here
Sorry I’m late. I had to work yesterday, so we’ve been preparing a Valentine’s Day dinner and watching on DVR. I stepped in briefly between the 1st and 2nd and decided it was best to not get involved in the discussion about goalie competency.
I saw lots of good and bad today. At times our forecheck was fantastic, but inconsistent. Individual effort by several guys was tremendous. Nabby made some on his head saves and stunk like two day old fish bait on others.
I’m with Plank, as much as the knee jerk reaction is to yank him when he gives up a couple of goals on the first 4/5 shots, I am not a big fan of pulling a goalie either. I can’t help but conjure up visions of Iron Mike yanking Kipper….it just isn’t right. But that said, I can’t for the life of me understand why we have to wait 30+ days between Bouch starts when Nabby is so obviously fighting the puck right now. He should be a stellar goalie (remember when he was easily considered an equal to Luongo and Brodeur?). He’s not playing at that level right now. And it doesn’t matter if he was screened, or the defense left him out to dry. He is supposed to be that stellar guy who makes those stops anyway. He’s not that guy right now.
At this point all I can hope for is home ice, and a healthy group.
As mentioned, I worried about this entire month back in October. Even with a healthy staff and a sharp goal keeper this would still be a rough month. It’s just now half over. Lets go home, rest, and win a couple. Then we can go back on the second half of this thing and hope for a repeat of last year.

That should have been “stand on his head saves”
Last “head save” I remember him making was against the Islanders last year around this time. Thank God he’s not making many of those anymore.
Completely on board with all your points Dave. Nabokov is brilliant at challenging shooters and it pans out when his rebound control is under wraps, but right now it’s just not happening. He looks like Marc Andre Fleury of Pittsburgh at the beginning of last season- pucks bouncing out to the bottom of the circle. Hell, immediately before one of our goals in the final period, Nabokov went to make a save and his momentum carried him all the way out close to the damn sideboards. It didn’t result in a goal, but it was alarming nonetheless.
And I really don’t understand how Boucher gets one start every month, I really don’t. Like I mentioned earlier, the fact is that Boucher has earned his minutes and Nabokov has not. Fact.

yes but
one of tmacs core philosophies is the even keel consistency thing. with the screwed up schedule for the past month, i imagine nabs playing time was pencilled in long ago. especially with the usual assortment of injuries at this time of year, having the “starters” in game in and game out adds consistency.

Boucher deserves a two-three year deal at around three million per next (if not more) at the end of this season. There’s no way we keep them both in my opinion.
And with Griess consistently underwhelming me every time I’ve seen him (to be fair, I haven’t seen him at all this year in Wooo-ster), it’s a picture that I’d rather not think about.

If DW can manage to pull that off I would be thrilled. Thing is, you have a guy who has effectively resurrected his career, and is getting to the age where this will probably be his last shot at a multi-year deal worth decent money.

Actually did an article on the average amount of years it takes to win a Cup for a first year coach since the mid 80’s (assuming that McLellan will win one in his career). Something like an average of five years and a 50% chance he even does it with the Sharks[link]
It’s not science really (doesn’t take into account skill level on the team, record before the year etc.), but it was interesting nonetheless.

I hope you’re right, and looking at your points, that might happen. But if he signs a one year deal does he do it for less than a million? He has an off year and boom his window of opportunity is gone.

I tend to agree with you
Granted, we aren’t party to his private thoughts/conversations, but everything I’ve seen would indicated that he was very happy and even grateful to get out of the Phantoms and play pro again, and for a cup contending team no less. And as others have observed, his play tends to slip after a few games, although he’s money when first put in net. At least, that’s been my observation.

Although the most games we’ve seen him play consecutively was earlier this year. I too, got the feeling he’s hottern’ hell for a game or two, then cools off a bit. Still, when comes back to earth, he’s a damned good goalie.

Ideally
I’m sure we’d all like to see this team stay together for at least another year (just in case) with perhaps a few minor tweaks. But, alas, I don’t see Bouch staying another year. Plank is right. He took this deal to get back up. He’s obviously proven (at least in my mind) he can do that job. There are plenty of teams that would love to have him starting for them right this minute. He deserves a starting job and the money that comes with it.

The Toronto Sun …. Breaking news………………
Detroit, MI – Divine intervention is believed to have brought Stanley Cup victory to the Detroit Red Wings in the last years Cup. The fix was in!!!
Special high speed cameras blessed by a Pittsburgh priest were able to capture images of winged angels helping the Red Wings win the game.
Referees who watched the new game footage at home on The Catholic Sports Channel are filing an injunction. As no one in the Joe could see anything unusual, and the game went on as normal. Officials are currently reviewing the tapes to decide on holding a “do-over” of the cup.
Henrik Zetterberg received angelic intervention in what is being called miracle plays on his and other Red Wings Stanley cup goals. Winged apparitions could be clearly seen on special Vatican cameras. Several angels body checked defenders out of his way or bent space-time to keep him in control of the puck.
In the final seconds of the game the delicate hands of divine spirits guided the puck away from the net in a clear violation of NHL rules.
Review of the tapes shows one lone boy in the crowd giving a signal every time an angelic presence would intervene. He was later beat up in the parking lot by priests in Pittsburgh after being called to give special papal testimony.
The League of Cardinals at the Vatican is confused why the Almighty chose to help Detroit. “We are perplexed certainly, but He works in mysterious ways” said Cardinal Giaccomo Giuseppe. The Pittsburgh Diocese is said to have lost 73,000 Euros on the game in a bet with the Pope.
One Detroit priest who spoke on the condition of anonymity confirmed that angels did help the Red Wings win, and later held a debauched after party on the head of a pin.
Toronto Sun reporters digging further found that the whole seedy event was rigged by pope Benedict who is a distant cousin of Zeterberg. In a hidden mic recording he pope could be clearly heard saying “Hey…back off…its a perk that comes with the gig”. Rumor has it this figured heavily into Zetterberg’s recent bloated contract with the Wings.
On the record the Pope would only say “Wyshynski you stink” before this reporter was thrown out by several angry nuns. His Holiness Saint Bettman refused comment also.

Nabby has got to make saves, bad calls or not. He’s gotta be better if we’re gonna make any run at the Cup. I know he’s good, but I’d give Boucher a few more starts here so that one of two things will happen.
1) Boucher will prove that he needs to be in net
2) Nabby will have a fire lit under his butt and finally start playing like an elite goalie.

So, I'm here
My friend originally came over just for the game, but due to Guitar Hero and YouTube she didn’t leave until just now.
Ugh, Nabby. At this point, I’m not asking you to make the amazing saves. I just want you to make the saves that any goaltender worth his salt should. I’ve been on the Boucher Bandwagon for a couple months now, but Nabby’s continuously deteriorating play is concerning me more and more. More Bouch, plz?
The refs are biased. There is no other explanation as to why all those calls against the Sharks are being called, when the other team is doing the exact same thing with absolutely no call. I don’t normally agree with Drew when he starts ranting about penalties, but I do now – that Clowe penalty was bullshit. One of the Thornton penalties was bullshit. There were probably two more bullshit calls, but I don’t remember them.
Patty, Pavs, Seto, Cheech, Blake, Murray – these guys are honestly the only ones that I thought played well. No Goal Grier reared his face yet again, Joe cannot be trusted with the puck, Nabokov has been discussed extensively, and the WorSharks are just not good enough.
On another note, does anybody else think that Randy jinxes the game? Whenever he says “No score so far this period,” or “The score is tied,” the other team always scores. And then, during this broadcast, I believe he said something to the effect of, “With JR coming back soon, those bottom two lines will really start becoming solidified again.” Cue Plihal injury.

You should send that to Randy or someone at CSN.
Maybe he’ll stop doing it then.

Lets not discount Jumbo's passing game,
heck of a pass to seto on that one timer, that is an extremely hard play to make by Joe absolutely amazing, better than the one-timer in my mind.

But for every amazing Thornton pass
There are about five HORRIBLE giveaways, at least one of which that results in an opponent’s goal or a prime scoring chance.
Granted, he is much better in the offensive zone, but I brace myself for a bad giveaway when he has the puck in the neutral or defensive zone. Its sort of a thing my dad and I do – yell at Joe when he has the puck in his own zone, and then do a sort of “of course” sigh when the turnover eventually happens.

I'll take a goal for five turnover ratio,
and still come on I think you exaggerate a little.

Yeah, I might be a bit hyperbolic, but its still a fairly consistent occurrence.

Well I am not sorry I missed the end of the third.
For those interested, Radek Stepanek def. Mardy Fish 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. After he won, Stepanek broke out his Thornton Black Armor for the aftermatch interview and activities. Turns out the man’s a Sharks fan too. I’m guessing nobody told him the final score since he played well in the doubles too.

I hadn't seen him play before.
I don’t follow tennis that closely, but man has he got a hell of a return.

Did he look hurt at all to you?
Or was he just trying to mess with Fish?
by mattman on Feb 15, 2009 8:58 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
I couldn't tell.
If he was hurt, it wasn’t anywhere nearly as bad as Blake was yesterday. He was limping through the entire match, but he stuck it out for the fans.

Did season ticket holders automatically get tickets or what?
by mattman on Feb 15, 2009 8:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
No, I picked them up on ticketmaster.
They had a discount during the week for season ticket holders, but I couldn’t make any of those matches. There were still lots of seats available. It was kind of sad to see the Tank that empty.

Less than half full, easily.
And that’s with one end roped off and replaced with grandstands down where the ice should be.

Ew! Gross!
Haha, but yah…. I was wondering, with every text-update I got of the game today… if they were going to shootouts again.
I saw the highlights though… 3 powerplay goals from the Devils?
Tsk, tsk.
The darn devils…. they should go to hell where they belong!
Let’s hope Sharks… will win it next time.

Because its a "lazy monday"
I decided to look at the lines and defensive pairings for the Sharks during yesterday’s game compared to the normal ones. It got kind of confusing after a while:
Marleau – Thornton – Setoguchi
Clowe (flu) – Pavelski – Michalek
Grier Plihal (injured 1st period) Nobody – Goc Grier – Cheechoo
Plihal Kaspar – Roenick Lemieux (flu) – Shelley McGinn
Mitchell
Boyle Blake – Lukowich Murray
Blake Ehrhoff – Vlasic Joslin
Ehrhoff Vlasic – Murray Semenov
Semenov
Nabokov (sucking)
Boucher (once a month)
IR: Mitchell, Roenick, Lukowich, Goc
DTD: Shelley, Plihal (?), Boyle
Italics and slashed out means that the player has been moved to a different position. Just slashed out means that they are injured.
Basically, what I found was that while the top two lines are largely untouched, the entire fourth line has been wiped out, the third line is slowly getting wiped out as well, and the top defensive pairing is injured, messing up all the other defensive pairings (because we can’t have Semenov with Joslin). That, combined with the fact that we know Lemieux and Clowe played with the flu and there are probably more players that have the flu but just aren’t saying anything (my best guesses are Thornton, Pavelski, Grier, Marleau, and/or Blake), makes it somewhat expected that the Sharks would lose. The fact that they never lost by more than a goal during this entire road trip, and only once in regulation, is definitely a good sign for an injury and fatigue-riddled team, but still.

Excellent points
And if you look at it that way (that they never lost by more than a goal) you should also look at the fact that they scored as much as they did. Columbus and Pittsburgh being the oddities.
