Lately I've been getting the strangest desire for food that, while not necessarily abnormal per say, wasn't in my daily diet by any means. Hershey's chocolate with almonds (and almonds only), pastrami sandwiches with no mustard (I adore dijon), Warhead candies (ate so many they gave me heartburn the other night), avocados with lemon juice, and toast with honey and bananas. For the life of me I can't figure out what's going on.

I think I may be pregnant.

Other than that, everything has been pretty run of the mill this month. Nothing too shocking. Oh yeah, those first sixteen days? I'm fine with em' now. Concerned yes, and a little wary to see the effort tonight, but ultimately refreshed after a day off from Sharks hockey.

[Editor's Note]: Remember your SPG Picks for a chance to win a Sharks Banner courtesy of Carrol's Cove.

Star-divide

Now I don't buy excuses, and for one basic reason- there are no excuses come April. That being said, up until this point the Sharks have played about as well as you can play on a game by game basis over an extended period of time (i.e. the whole freaking season). Every great team is going to struggle at one point in the year. It's not an excuse, it's a fact.

Whether it's the number one goaltender being atrocious, flu bugs and injuries, getting outhit in the first period, forgetting how to clear the puck up the boards, throwing lazy shots at the net, not hitting the initial breakout pass on the tape, letting the other team dictate the play from the first whistle, our coaching staff not fighting against some bad calls with more passion from the bench, players turning the puck over in the neutral zone and not taking the time to backcheck, ugly line changes, giving up leads with less than ten seconds on the clock, or numerous other faults we can all find in February, this was bound to happen. Unfortunately it landed during one of the road trips we really felt would be a good barometer to see where the Sharks were at.

So is life.

I'm not chalking it up to our depleted roster- the injured are key additions yes, but any team with Big Joe, Patty, Gooch, Pavs, Vlasic, Nabokov, Blake, Boyle etc. can and will play better than the first half of this month. San Jose is a Stanley Cup contender no matter who is out of the lineup on any given night. Injuries happen in the playoffs; it's a way of life. Fighting through those injuries is a big part of what makes good teams great.

I'm not listening to the cookie cutter stuff the Sharks homepage is doling out when they say, "The San Jose Sharks are coming off their worst stretch of the season and still things don’t appear that bad" [sjsharks.com]. Honestly guys, it looked bad. Illness and injuries yes I understand, but the Sharks gave up the first goal in every single game of that road trip. You're just not going to win hockey games like that.

I'm not listening to my inner monologue when it says, "Start Boucher tonight." I've been a big supporter of Boucher getting more time between the pipes this entire year (as have many of you), and frankly it's the only fault I can find with McLellan's philosophy up to this point. Boucher needs more starts. Period.

But not tonight. Tonight Nabokov needs the green light. He was terrible during the road trip, but goddammit, he's our number one goaltender, a Vezina Finalist only a season ago. A lot of the problems during the road trip lie with Nabby (11 GA in the last two games looks almost as bad on paper as it did on TV), but when he's on his game he is the best in the league. The best Jerry, the best. Get him between the pipes in The Tank and watch him work wonders.

However, I am listening to my inner monologue when it says, this team will take all this adversity, bottle it up for later in the year when they're down 3-2 with five to go, and bounce back faster than you can say salvation. They have too many veterans on the roster who have seen the dark side of the NHL season to let the team continue to dance around like a February Flopsicle. They have too much talent on the roster to blow leads and/or dig themselves into a hole in the first twenty minutes. They have a man behind the bench that the city believes in, a man that won a Stanley Cup only a year ago.

The product on the ice needs to improve. Count me among those who are certain that it will.

Go Sharks.

Interestingly

TM sounded unsure of who would be starting tonite when interviewed by Pollack after the Devils game. Of course, everyone knows I stand shoulder to shoulder with you about Boucher’s status. And in the case I guess I agree with you. However, I really would like to see him start one of the 3 games on this home stand.

Reminder

Edmonton played Phoenix last night (and won), so we really have no excuse tonight. No panic button for me yet, but considering that the Oilers have to decide which goalie to put in (much like us, I suppose), we should be ready to roll out of the Shark head, guns blazing.

Scary stuff about Roloson (from the Sharks' website)
The Oilers have gotten outstanding goaltending from Dwayne Roloson, who has started their last six games and compiled a 1.62 goals-against average during the winning streak.

After making 28 saves versus Phoenix, it’s unclear if Roloson will start again Tuesday. However, he’s been in net both times versus the Sharks thus far and is 5-3-0 with a 2.80 GAA in his last eight against them.

by Mr. K. on Feb 17, 2009 12:43 PM PST up reply actions

I should be a bit nervous

Especially because Roloson is the Shark-killer, but my mind just cannot forget the sight of Roloson being pulled because of a goal scored by Staubitz from Semenov and Murray. I don’t think anybody ever predicted that there would be a scoring play from those three.

by mymclife on Feb 17, 2009 12:46 PM PST up reply actions

Wow, missed that one...

I was in the air on January 9th (en route to Seattle to catch the Vancouver game the next day), and I still haven’t seen the highlights. I’m encouraged by that.

by Mr. K. on Feb 17, 2009 12:47 PM PST up reply actions

Here are the highlights. Its pretty obvious from the first goal on that Roloson wasn’t exactly on his game, but still.

Oh, and my mistake – Roloson wasn’t pulled right after Staubitz’s goal, but after the first period because the Sharks were beating the Oilers 3-1. I’d like to think, though, that Staubitz’s goal (and Roloson’s mishandling of the puck) was what ultimately decided his fate. It just makes things so much better.

From the Sharks' website
San Jose, which is opening a three-game homestand, hopes its success at HP Pavilion can help prevent its first four-game slide since an 0-4-1 stretch from Feb. 12-20, 2008.

The Sharks will also be trying to avoid their first three-game skid at home since dropping five straight (0-3-2) from Dec. 15, 2007-Jan. 3, 2008.

But San Jose is likely to be wary of a visit from Edmonton (29-23-4). The Sharks have lost three straight home contests against the Oilers, falling 3-2 in overtime on Dec. 6 in the lone matchup there this season.

Edmonton fell 4-1 at home to San Jose on Jan. 9 in the most recent meeting, but hasn’t seen the loss column much lately. It has put together a 4-1-1 run to pull into a three-way tie for sixth in the tightly packed West.

Reminder about Oiler injuries
Despite injuries to two of their best puck-moving defensemen, the Oilers aren’t expecting to add any high-end skill to their blueline at the NHL trade deadline, according to general manager Steve Tambellini.

Tambellini said the Oilers will wait to see exactly how long Denis Grebeshkov will be out with his high ankle sprain before making any moves, and even then they’ll probably have to add at the bottom end, not the top.

"We’re not going to be able to replace a Lubomir Visnovsky (out for the season after shoulder surgery) or a Grebeshkov at this time," he said. "More realistically, you’re looking for people who can give you minutes."

More info on Edmonton
• LW Steve MacIntyre, the 250-pound Oilers enforcer, sat out for the seventh time in the last eight games Monday in Phoenix. He’s invaluable against the likes of rival Calgary and Minnesota, but they’ve taken to holstering their big gun most nights.

• G Dwayne Roloson started his 12th straight game Monday in Phoenix and will almost certainly make it 13 in a row when the Oilers play Tuesday at San Jose. Roloson has played in 27 of Edmonton’s last 29 games.

Medical Watch:

• RW Fernando Pisani (ankle) was injured Nov. 17 and is out until late February.

• D Lubomir Visnovsky (shoulder) was injured Feb. 3 and is out for the season.

• D Denis Grebeshkov (ankle) was injured Feb. 11 and it out until late March.

What?!

Okay, I get the whole lack of centers thing, and not disrupting the completely hot second line, but Marleau to the third line? And Kaspar to the first? Maybe they’re trying to shop Kaspar to other teams for the trade deadline, that’s the only plausible reason I could think of Kaspar being on the top line over Cheechoo, or even McGinn.

by mymclife on Feb 17, 2009 2:12 PM PST up reply actions

That's

A VERY good analysis – and something that was discussed between Plank and I when they brought Kaspar up in the first place.

I see it

as putting Marleau on the 3rd will hopefully make that line more productive. He and Grier do a good job together on the PK, so maybe? I think we’ll see Marleau double shifting in the 3rd if Kaspar doesn’t come through

Fear the Fin....where being an old guy isn't all bad

by Dave Valentine on Feb 17, 2009 2:15 PM PST up reply actions

That's

Also true – our third line has been (except for Cheech’s goal in NJ) not so productive. I think Kaspar will be there for the long haul – esp. if we’re shopping him.

Fear The Fin: Keeping you from your obligations since 2008

by Mr. K. on Feb 17, 2009 2:26 PM PST up reply actions

Didn't think of that

Marleau is definitely a competent passer, what with 30 assists on the year, and will definitely be able to dish out some nice passes to Cheechoo. And Marleau’s familiarity with Grier probably helps as well.

But that just reminded me of the time when McLellan was shuffling the lines, and somehow a Cheechoo-Thornton-Grier line was formed, and they scored two goals. Why not demote Thornton to the third line, switch Marleau to center, and still have Kaspar up on the first line to shop him? Or does Thornton have some sort of “first line only” clause in his contract?

But Angry Joe is always fun to watch! And he plays pretty well too; maybe he’ll make Kaspar into a somewhat competent player (maybe yet another reason why Kaspar is on the first line – Joe will make Kaspar look even better and more desirable for other teams).

First line = KASPAR – Thornton – Setoguchi

Second line (no changes) = Clowe – Pavelski – Michalek

Third line = Grier – MARLEAU – Cheechoo

Fourth line = McGinn – LEMIEUX – Staubitz

Reason for Marleau on center = injuries to Goc and Plihal.

More about Kaspar, Lemieux, and Nabby
"Ninety-nine percent of that is a function of injury," Coach Todd McLellan explained. With Marcel Goc on the IR and Tomas Plihal day-to-day with a lower body injury, the Sharks were thin at center, and McLellan decided the best course of action was to move Marleau back to his former position.

Kaspar, McLellan pointed out, "was drafted years ago to fulfill that type of potential, and this is a good opportunity for him to show the world what he’s capable of doing in that capacity.

Kaspar was smiling after practice. When Alexei Semenov told him, "one goal tonight," Kaspar responded with, "Just one?" And he had to put up with a little razzing from Mike Ricci, who walked by and said, "Seventeen years and I never was promoted to the top line."

But Kaspar did recognize that the opportunity does carry extra pressure. Still, he kept smiling.

Lemieux hasn’t played much at center — a couple shifts with the China Sharks, he said, plus a few during his time in Phoenix — but said he was happy to do whatever the team asked of him.

Not that I had much doubt this would be the case, but Evgeni Nabokov will be in goal. If you read the story in Monday’s print edition, you know that McLellan considers his goalie just one of many players who have to be better, and wasn’t inclined to single him out after the pair of 6-5 losses.

Let me tell you a short story. Last year I was doing some ancestorial research on our family at the request of my son. I knew from my mother’s side we were Dutch, but no matter what I did, I kept coming up with French on my dad’s side. Frustrated, I emailed the bad news to my son. His response was the best. “We’re Frogs! You’re shitting me! Aw, I give up! ……Oh no, look, it’s already happening!”

The happy ending is that we found out the Frog, er, ah….French link was in error and instead I’m distantly related to Christian Ehrhoff

As is customary with every Sharks/Oilers bout

We need to guess when a goalie mask will fall off. Roloson is of course well known for this ‘veteran move’, but the last time these two teams met it was Nabokov who was guilty of multiple equipment malfunctions (aka, sneaky way to rest one’s squad…and quads)

I’ll guess with 2 minutes remaining in the 2nd period with the Sharks pressuring, Blake winds up for a shot that kicks off Rollie’s mask and in the ensuing scrum he shakes it loose to stop play right before the puck slips into the net

And at the other end of the ice Nabokov yells “aw HELL no” – rips off his own mask and chucks it the length of the ice causing an old school full on bench brawl. The Oilers engage in turtle pilates while Stortini skates around like Coach Jim Valvano looking for somebody to ‘hug it out’

I'm a happy seal

We mentioned the goalie mask back in December

Something like, “Darth Vadar [Roloson] revealed his true self.” Lots of Star Wars references…

Watching the Sabres/Leafs game

I watched for the first seven minutes or so, and the Leafs were dominating the play. I go do something else for about ten minutes, and the Sabres are up 3-0, with a goal just called off. How quickly things can turn.

Oh, and Pogge (Leaf’s rookie goalie) got a Bronx cheer for steering the puck away after a dump-in. Not as bad as a “We want ten!” chant, but definitely not going to help his confidence one bit (oh, and it does give me a bit more confidence in the Sharks game to remember that the Oilers inspired that chant and one of my favorite hockey-related song parodies).

that said,

i like the idea behind moving tha captain to the 3rd line. its shows the character marleau has. can you imagine any other all-star superstar player, especially in a sport like football, being moved to the backburner? its hows the confidence tmac has in the captains ability to captain his team.

well

cant really blame nabokov for either goal.

staubuitz, who is a penalty liability on skates was useless in getting to the net to d up. maybe he flopped a bit, but the d needs to be there first.

puck hits a stanchon and screws everything up.

i blame it on being completely outworked after scoring a goal. really looked terrible.

i think they turn it around effort-wise. but goals will be tough to come by now.

the let downs are really killing them they could very well outshoot 30-2 and dominate the rest of the game and still lose. because of 6 minutes of sloppy lazy play.

it's just annoying

they can afford the $14,000 tuition at serra but they can’t pay for 1 sharks game. and it’s not so much about the grades as it is about me not trying. i get at least a 3.5 gpa without trying. they want a 4.0 since i “only” have 2 honors classes.

What I want isn't as lofty

Just a PPG for Marleau, so he can get a hat trick with every type. Or two more goals, I’m not picky.

or...

That will do

He would also need a penalty shot and an empty-netter to score all types of goals, though.

Crap

Forgot about those.

Umm… I’ll just settle for the three most common types of goals (EV, SHG, and PPG). And an extra goal, just to ensure his place as 1st star for the league tonight (stupid Stamkos got a natural hat trick).
