Game Wrap Up: Edmonton @ San Jose
| Sjsharks.com Recap | Game Summary | FTF Gameday Thread |
First Period
Snapshots: Nice first shift for the second line to get things started.... A fairly choppy period to start things off (are we celebrating icing and offsides like it's going out of style?).... Continuing with the rhetorical questions, is Ron Wilson back on the Sharks bench once again? Todd McLellan was throwing out different combos all night, with Patty centering Lemieux & Staubitz at one point during a faceoff in the offensive zone.... Lukas Kaspar took a hit to generate a nice scoring chance for Setoguchi, but Joe Thornton needs to attack that rebound with more vigor. He flat out got beat to the puck.... Pavelski's goal was slick, but Ryane Clowe was the big reason that chance ever materialized. Excellent pressure on the forecheck.... Immediately following Pavelski's goal, the Sharks were outworked for the rest of the period. It's happened multiple times this season where the guys will take the shift off following a goal.... Stortini's goal was a complete breakdown in the defensive zone. Boyle and Staubitz both overpursued the puck and left Nabokov hanging out to dry.... Kaspar's interview with Scott Reese had more huffing and puffing than a Cheech & Chong flick....
Second Period
Snapshots: Nabokov had a huge save on Penner to help kill the remaining time left on the PK.... Patrick Marleau is one of the clutchest goal scorers in the league. I'd take him over Dany Heatley any day of the week (and not just because I'd be more comfortable carpooling to work with the guy).... Joe Pavs should open up a museum. Great work shorthanded for our burgeoning PK artist.... Thornton had a few bumbles in the defensive zone, one of which led to a great Cogliano scoring opportunity. Those need to go to the wayside soon.... Hemsky's pass from the sideboards to the crease has been open all freaking night.... All the emotion that began to bubble (and eventually boil over) in the second period is the sole reason why playoff hockey is hands down the most beautiful thing to experience in professional sports....
Third Period
Snapshots: Grind, grind, grind, grind.... My friend and I were talking about this last year when the Kings came to town (while moping about the Sharks power play troubles)- Rob Blake is so good at getting shots on net from the point.... As much crap we hear about Dustin Penner, he was a solid presence in front of Nabby tonight and gave our defensemen some problems.... Is it possible to send our net to the box for two minutes? Some pretty shoddy calls tonight.... I will take Semenov's penalty any day of the week. What an improvement from last year and the beginning of this year as well....
Takeaways
Not a perfect game by any means, but a solid performance for most of the tilt. My main concern (damn it feels good to have something to complain about with a smile on my face once again) would have to be the Sharks shifts immediately following a goal. The Oilers did an excellent job of cycling at will and generating good scoring opportunities, effectively erasing the momentum from scoring.
Tonight was a step in the right direction. Big ups to the entire team answering the physical bell in the second period and grinding out a win in the third.
Go Sharks.

Nice quick wrap there Planky.
Loved the game. The Sharks played a full 60 minutes for once, which was nice to see. Good to get back on track.

in my day
we had to do our homework on paper. And then send it by pony express to the instructors. Backwards, uphill, in insane heat. In the desert.

Man sounds like you had it easy.
We had to deal with alligators, drunken tourists and category 5 hurricanes. And let me tell you, paper doesn’t fare so well when the rain is coming at you sideways. Guess it all depends on where you go to school.

Todd McClellan needs to get on the refs more when the calls aren’t going our way. Especially the slash that broke Ehrhoff’s stick behind our net. I think I’ve seen The Todd (hockey five!) get us calls before. (Didn’t they give us one after the rewind on a high stick near our blue line a couple weeks back? Inebriation eradicated details, but a memory of a similar situation is rattling around.) Seriously, I’m not as mad as Drew was, but boy howdy them refs are blinder than myself after an evenin’ wit lady moonshine! It made me want to go clock Oilers in between their own net and a referee. Or even something to do with my 4-wheeler.
Clowe completely set up that goal along the half boards there with that hard-working takeaway, but the puck would have been long gone before 29 got there for the hit if we hadn’t locked down on the boards, blue line and beyond. Credit all around (not to discredit Clowe.)
Patrick Marleau is my favorite Shark for this reason: He rarely gets into a one on none without casting a wondrous red glow on the back of a beaten goalie. Not many more times has he missed on one on ones. Nor does he often misplace a pass on a well-developing two or three on two. This is getting ridiculous, everyone’s seen it, the man is a puck-handling, speed-skating, and more importantly, hockey-loving machine. Every time he’s got a big time scoring chance, you can stand up with confidence you won’t have to just sit back down.
I’m feeling a winning streak. For no other reason than that I want a winning streak. And hell, we’re the Sharks.

Quote of the month front runner?
I agree with the assertion that Sweeney Todd needs to be more willing to lop off heads in response to some questionable calls by the officials. The one-liner I touched upon in my game preview is probably fitting; I doubt he’s offered much more than that in the last few games*.
* In his defense though, I bet those one liners scorch the soul like the white hot passion of a thousand burning suns.

I'd have given that 3rd star
to Pavs instead of Cheech
Solid game all around. Very happy with the effort. Would loved to see Shelley in there in the 2nd to smooth out Moreau’s rough edges though

This game proved three things
1. Marleau is not just a product of being Joe Thornton’s winger. He was on the third line, playing with two guys whose combined goals scored wouldn’t even match his own. What does he do? Score twice.
2. The third line, with a speedy center who can put the puck on net, can be productive. Oh Torrey Mitchell, please come back soon!
3. The Sharks don’t take shit from anybody, even with Shelley out. And who are the guys who take the fighting penalties? Semenov, Lemieux, and Staubitz. Guys that, while competent role players, aren’t necessary for the team to win. Having them take care of the rough stuff is much better than, say, having Joe Thornton out in the box for five minutes.
I could probably think of more (like Pavelski = still awesome), but I have a lot of homework that I procrastinated on.

Hells yes.
That was an absofrakkinlutely (try typing that out on a cell phone keypad) awesome game. Congrats to the captain on 600. I thought it was a pretty solid effort all around. The physicality and effort really got the crowd into it. It seemed like the road trip performance kind of damped the enthusiasm in the place at first, things were not quite as loud as you’d have expected after the team being gone for a week.

I was laughing that you took the time to text that to me at the game – “Hell yes!” over and over is easy, but that took some skill, bruva.
Oh, and congrats to both of us for calling Patty’s 600th point at the start of the second – prophet status, Lurker and I…

OUCH – Dany Heatley’s past will not be forgotten… nor should it be.

Notes
1. Roloson playing baseball with the puck, tossing it up after a glove save and hitting it up ice from mid-air.
2. Mike Grier and Patrick Marleau – what a solid two-on-one. Credit to Mikey for giving the puck to the sure-fire scorer.
3. Joe Pavelski has a 4-game goal streak going on, and Jonathan Cheechoo has a 2-game point streak (hey – it’s big for him).
4. Lukas Kaspar’s assist on Jumbo’s goal is critical – to his trade value.
5. Outstanding forechecking tonight, for the most part – we pursued that puck. Not a flawless night, certainly, but improved.

I didn't know they could fit that many guys in there.
I had to yell “What’s in the box?” at them. Just because of this (2:00 mark):

Just got home
I’m hoarse. I’ll have to go and read all of the comments tomorrow, but sounds like everyone thought the refs sucked. Which they did. I’ll also have to watch the replay tomorrow (well, I guess tomorrow is today already…)
That penalty summary is something else…
Sorry I didn’t get over to see you, Mr. K; I had both boys with me (last minute change in plans). I’ll try again on Saturday.

Cool man, no worries
Saturday I’ll be in the 100s – plush invite from school parents. I think 103, but I’m not certain… somewhere between 126 and 104.

That 3rd line finally looked playable
I had said that the first line shouldn’t be tinkered with, and the first line was maybe 85% as effective without Marleau, but that third line was leaps and bounds better than it has been all year.
And I’m surprised there was no teeth knashing when it was announced Marleau would be on the third line? When I suggested Michalek be put there (a very similar player to Marleau), some thought it would be a slap in the face and that I was underappreciative of Michaleks effort. Actually, the way TM handled Marleau (some double shifting with the first line, heavy PK and PP time) would be exactly how I would have done it with Michalek. In the end, I’m glad Marleau took it as an opportunity to make the team better, and not some kind of demotion. Cheechoo actually looked like a potential 30 goal scorer out there, as opposed to a slow 3rd line checker. With these lines, I wouldn’t be surprised to see TM rotate the first line practice jersey around, because each of those lines last night was high quality and has some prolific scoring potential.

I assume you’re talking about this discussion, but correct me if you’re not.
The difference to me between both situations (Michalek/Marleau on the third line) is that Patty is only slated there until we begin to get people healthy again. The center position is really banged up right now- when Goc/Mitchell/Roenick return, Marleau gets bumped back up and all is right with the world.

Does anyone know of a place that I can watch a replay of the whole game? Apparently I made it on the show! The camera cut to me whilst I was screaming about one of the many none penalty calls that happened in this game. But of course, we had to make room on the DVR for some reality show I dont care about.
And I dont have comcast, so I cant pull up the replays from there. Anybody know what I can do?
