Sjsharks.com Recap Game Summary FTF Gameday Thread

First Period

(Sits down on the couch) Well tonight should be a- why Mr. Kaspar, nice of you to show up on the board.... First shift after a goal, once again the Sharks allow the opponents to get some solid chances. Looking forward, that can kill you.... First power play Joe hanging out on the sideboards again. Old habits die hard eh?.... Evgeni Nabokov is not Marty Turco. On the plus side, not a pile of dung. On the negative side? He scares me every time he plays the puck.... How many games in a row is that with a (much deserved) interference call off the faceoff.... If Douglas Murray and Dustin Brown collided at full speed, would the world explode? Consider it....

Second Period

Douglas Murray needs to pick up his man in front of the net on that goal.... Starting to ramble here (Rolling Rock ftw!), but the Sharks penalty kill might be the most underrated aspect of their team. Yeah they just gave up a goal this period, but 4th in the league is something that very rarely gets talked about in great detail when you speak about the Sharks strengths.... From Edmonton's recap: "Rob Blake is so good at getting shots on net from the point". One cracked pane of glass later.... "Just a little how do ya do? My name's Claude Lemiuex. Thank you.".... Call on Ersberg is questionable but I'll take it.... I love how the last two games have seen teams try and push the Sharks around, yet what do they do? Answer the bell. Ten bucks to anyone who finds out what Joe said to O'Donnell's face with a grin before throwing that punch....

Third Period

Setoguchi dropping the gloves to defend Patty? Sold.

Two head shots in this period. That's all I need to say. I'll be taking a look at them tomorrow when I'm in the right frame of mind, but Drew expounded perfectly on the situation when he said (paraphrasing here), "The refs will call the hooks and grabs, but not the tough stuff."

Takeaways

Anytime an NHL player admits to 18,000 people that he is fond of Celine Dion is the day I jump off the Golden Gate Bridge. Who has a parachute?

Two points against a Los Angeles Kings team that looks solid as hell. Two nights in a row where the Sharks are on the short end of some questionable hits, two nights in a row where they stand up for their teammates and buckle down in the third period.

Only thing I want to see more of is McLellan up on the bench screaming at the officials- he could be a little more vocal in those situations.

Go Sharks.

Both the heart and the Vlasic hat. Well done. I worry that if you sent either to Vlasic he would probably lose his shit.

Did anyone else notice on the hit Armstrong put on Erhoff that he sort of left his feet (was that what Drew and Randy were talking about, I sort of missed them talking)? Not a full out jump, but still something pretty shady.

which one?

really, the kings just resorted to hitting high and late as much as possible. it was ludicrous that there was no boarding major on that hit on ehrhoff, the refs have the responsibility to send the message that that cant go on. sharks backed off a bit at the end, staying less vulnerable (less aggressive therefore) because of it and this minimized what we saw.

The one near the end where Erhoff got his head rocked into the glass. He did get a boarding, but it was offset by the “roughing” on Clowe.

boarding minor

not a major. or even a double minor. it seems some context needs to come into play. second high hit in a row, need to stop the trend.

Drew would never say

“left his feet”…didn’t they have this conversation a few weeks ago? His feet left the ice, but he can’t leave his feet…

Anyway, I digress. The NHL should review all of those shots to the head.

by Section223 on Feb 19, 2009 10:24 PM PST up reply actions   0 recs

what is disturbing is

the timing. obviously the kings were tired and frustrated, being outskated and outplayed, and certain king’s players took high risk head shots. terrible. nhl should look at it.

yessir

4 on 4 is great with 2 aggressive teams. not so much against say… minnesota? tonight just pure fun.

i disagree (respectfully) about cheech. he may pot a few, but his contribution will be more like grier’s intangible, extremely valuable grind play. numerous times tonight he battled and won the puck either on the forecheck, backchecking in the neutral zone, and also in the last few minutes on d.
i’ve said it else where, but i dont think he is a scoring threat, and nor should we expect him to be. not that he has gotten worse, just that the game around him has gotten so much better.

Ok here’s my big points(and some smaller):

-Too few chances on first two powerplays. I chalk it up to a powerful Kings PK keeping us pushed to the borders. But then just as I say that Patty’s hands net him a four game goal streak. (Note 12 and 16 within 5 feet of the net with just one King.)

-I’m feeling a Cheechoo goal explosion in the coming weeks.

-Nabby too active? I think so. Two unlucky bounces in the last two games, thank Sharkie only one came back.

-Too much dump and chase on the PP. Early on anyway.

-I LOVE 4 on 4

-I especially loved the way we ran the second 4 on 4 like Olympic Sprinter Usain Bolt

-Props to #9 for drawing a penalty on their goalie. A lesser man would have tried to avoid the hit.

-Vlasic had an amazing poke check after his goal. After netting a record breaking goal (most goals in a season by Shark’s defense,) he shows us why hes really here.

-Milan puts a gorgeous one home off an even gorgeous-er assist from Pavs in the corner office (half way between the corner and the office)

-After a road trip riddled with line changes sloppier than non-brand name Sloppy Joe day in the high school cafeteria, I only saw one poor change tonight. That’s a very good sign.

-Waning seconds of the 2nd we did what I have seen us not do so much lately. Play with spirit instead of phone it in to the locker room early or sharkie forbid give up a game tying goal to the sabres

-Patty is INCREDIBLY underated.

-Is it just me or did you also start thinking the Kings might be getting coaching tips from this guy late in the game?

-Kit

Recap Up

Jesus I’m shwastey.

Honestly, two nights in a row where there are some shoddy calls (like everyone has mentioned in the thread and here).

The last few years we would not have answered the physical bell. This season?

Two nights?

Hell, I’m still upset at the crappy officiating from the road trip. I’d say seven games of god awful refereeing, where hooks and trips are called to the extreme, but headshots/boarding/cross checks/high sticks? Oh, sorry, not a penalty. If anything, the refs should be erring on the side of caution for the more dangerous penalties, not the ones where the phrase “parallel to the ice” is a key part of its definition.

But, ranting aside, I’m liking the physical Sharks that I’m seeing. Yeah, having Seto, Blake, and Clowe off the ice because of various retaliatory penalties wasn’t a great trade-off, but the fact that these high-scoring guys care enough about the team to go and take those penalties? Awesome. I loved seeing Seto go into his own Angry Joe mode (Angry Seto? Angry Gooch? Now that one sounds weird…) after Marleau got hit in the head, dropping the gloves right away and pretty much attacked Gauthier. The look on his face… I would not want to meet him a dark corner when he’s angry.

Just got home

It was a LOUD game. The Sharks went kinda overboard with the whole “BEAT LA” thing. I mean last year I went to a Sharks vs. Kings game and I thought awesome, a “Beat LA” chant. This time, right when the puck dropped, “BEAT LA BEAT LA BEAT LA” and it was LOUD. It got kind of quiet after the first two goals but once the Sharks got up 3-2 it got loud again.

What also made the game loud… The most annoying Kings fans sitting behind us. Two girls were making the highest pitched noise I ever heard. They got quiet in the middle of the third, when they finally noticed they were down by two goals.

It was also cool to see the angry skill players in person. Little Joe getting all mad. Angry Seto was pretty cool too. I didn’t believe when I saw Seto all angry.

Seeing Kaspar score a goal was cool too. Does anyone else think Kaspar looks cool with his hair?
