Fear the Fincentric Trade Talk
[Editor's Note]: SwisherThresher got us off to a great start this afternoon with some excellent sites to check out heading up to the deadline and a rundown of what has occurred thus far. We'll be bumping this up to the top of the page everyday, so be sure to leave any links/analysis of non-Sharks trades here. If The Godfather DW makes a deal, firing off a Fanpost/Fanshot is probably your best bet. We'll be sure to front page it as soon as we see it.
Check out the SB Nation Trade Deadline Hub for more analysis from the writers that follow their respective teams. It is an absolute necessity going forward, as we're going to see the power balance in both conferences shift considerably over the course of the next five days.
Go Sharks.

Long standing rumors suggest the Bruins are very interested in Pronger. A recent development states Burke is trying to convince Lauren Pronger bring the $6.25 million dollar D-man to Toronto.

Unbelievable, really, how 10 UFAs can’t make the list but Pronger does. It may turn out to be true, but I refuse to believe it’s in any way logical.

Agree with you Sleek, but it might be more of a product of getting big names on the list. All of those names are guys that could be considered team changers.
Travis Moen and Rob Niedermayer don’t exactly make head lines ya know?

WOW
That is a lot of links.
So, it looks like the Sharks probably won’t trade anyone or trade for someone this year.
Am I right?
Last year when the Sharks traded for Brian Campbell (boo) it came out of nowhere (right?) so anything is possible (right?)
(I’m not much of an expert of NHL trades so that’s why I have so many “rights?”. I don’t say “right?” so I seem always correct..)

Just saw this on Yahoo if anyone's interested
San Jose Sharks: Buyers
But not late and not active ones. Once everyone is healthy, which is, well, just about now, the Sharks have the depth and talent to win. The only place they might want to look is on defense, just because a team never has enough playoff-experienced depth. They’ll sell S.J. Sharkie and advertising rights to TV color analyst’s Drew Remenda’s bald head to win the Cup.
What company would we like to see on Drew’s head?

Or in New Jersey. But he’s going to one of those, I’d imagine – unless Burke can get him for big bucks. Ron Wilson should have fun with that.

a moment of “Whew!” when I heard about Burke courting Chrissy. I doubt it’ll happen, but hey, he’s got a ring, so….maybe
I do wonder, what does everyone think of Niedemeyer if DW pulled one out of the hat? I’m not advocating it by any means, just curious what others might think?

I have to add
I haven’t looked at numbers, so I don’t know how they’d make that fit under the cap. I can see Anaheim liking Cheech for him though

I'd be a-ok with it
Though expect the Bay Area to cry “foul” for dealing Cheechoo (a career-long Shark) in a year when we’re in the running for the Cup. I think people are starting to realize he won’t be around next year, but an offseason trade, post playoffs, is less “backstabbing” then mid-season – or so my Cheechoo loving (female) friends tell me.

Nieds cap hit is at 6.75 million, and even though it’s prorated (meaning he’ll take somewhere upwards of 2 million in room), the Sharks would need to send roughly that much salary over to Anaheim for the deal to work. Just a quick glance at the roster, here’s a proposed deal. I’m not advocating this by the way, just tossing it out for discussion:
Deal 1
Christian Ehrhoff- 3.1
Jonathan Cheechoo- 3.0
Draft Pick?
I’m guessing Murray is looking for young players, so not sure this deal would even work. Ehrhoff is a young D who could compliment Whitney in terms of puck movers on their blueline.
Deal 2
Milan Michalek- 4.3
Brad Lukowich or Ehrhoff- 1.5 and 3.1 respectively
Definitely a better deal for the Ducks.
Nieds would most likely be a rental, and I don’t think he would resign with the Sharks after the season. I don’t really see DW giving the green light on this- we’d have to give up too much young talent to make it happen.

Yeah I’m with you on pulling the trigger on number one, but I doubt Bob Murray would go for it. Cheech doesn’t have the allure he did three years ago, and they could definitely get a lot more for Nieds than that.
Michalek is signed for like seventeen years (six I think). Clowe needs to put the ink on.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
by Mr. Plank on Feb 27, 2009 5:38 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Well
Clowe and Michalek need to be a part of the team for several years. I wouldn’t advocate trading either.
On the other hand, perhaps Murray sees a change in scenery for Cheech as a benefit. He is a Rocket trophy winner…..but let me be clear. I am not in the ’trade Cheech camp" just putting some theories up for speculation.

giving up 3/4 line production for D…if that’s the way they go. I don’t see them trading Cheech for another forward, so it’s gotta be for D. And I don’t see anyone else getting traded….Cheech is it as far as I see. I understand the Clowe thing, with his RFA, but I just don’t see DW letting him go.

by mattman on Feb 27, 2009 6:59 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
IMO, Cheech is being held onto because he’s insurance in case someone on one of the top two lines is injured. He’s played well with all the main guys before, but just isn’t as consistently effective as they are, hence his position on the third line.
Plus, we’ve seen how much his production goes up when with a non-offensively-challenged center; if DW manages to trade for one/Mitchell comes back and dominates, then Cheech will only help make the third line into a scoring threat.

My flight is in 5 hours, but I have tons of stuff to do in the meantime. I head to JFK, then to Burlington, VT, where I’ll rent a car and drive to Montreal. Got a suite downtown for $80 USD – steal of a deal.
I bring this up to say that trade stuff might go down w/o my immediate knowledge.
Game wrap will be up late tomorrow night – but I suppose it will still be early, given the time change.
Totally random – what the hell happened to KindaFantastic? She went to the Boston game, and then disappeared. The thought occurred to me yesterday.
At any rate, keep the fort down for me. GO SHARKS.

Yup
He’ll be an RFA, which means that we’ll get picks if he’s signed to an offer sheet and DW decides not to match it (the number and quality of the picks depends on how much money he’ll get – but, since he’ll command a relatively high price, I’m seeing some first and second rounders).
IMO, signing Clowe is one of the first priorities DW should have this off-season (resigning Boucher is another, lol). He’s the definition of a power forward and already has great chemistry with the team. But even if we aren’t able to resign him, there will still be some return for the Sharks.

Agreed
Maybe McLellan can try the Semenov method with him – play him up at forward so that he can really understand what is needed from the defensemen. I mean, Semenov improved something like 1000% percent after his stint as a forward, it wouldn’t hurt to try the same with Ehrhoff.

??
I’m not saying he’s bad – just that sometimes he’s off on his coverage to make an offensive play and puts himself in a position where he has to take a penalty in order to eliminate a scoring chance.

I'd say that's a pretty fair assessment of him.

Although I wouldn’t be adverse to Couture spending a year in the minors instead of coming directly from juniors just to play on the third line. Since Roenick might come back next season (if no Cup, then definitely will), he could center the fourth line on a smaller salary (i.e. not the $1 million he’s making this year, but not the league minimum he made last season) and provide that amazing amount of locker room energy.

Cup contender, rejuvenated his career, 40 years old, close to the cap – I could see it happening, especially if he likes playing here. "Better" is a relative term, of course
Because I doubt the NHL is making more money than, say, the NFL.
But, yeah – league revenue from year to year is largely based on TV contracts and gate revenues, and since the season tickets were bought before the economy went to shit the league isn’t doing too badly. That, combined with the renaissance that some teams are having that packs in the fans (i.e. Blackhawks and Panthers), the NHL isn’t doing that bad.

Semenov’s cap hit is only like $665,000, right? Since he’s likely not to get a raise as the seventh defenseman, I would suspect DW would keep him, especially since he’s proven that he can actually play.
Grier, though… I don’t know. The guy is great on the PK and works his ass off, but a bunch of the younger guys are starting to fill his role in the team much cheaper and have a better upside offensively.
I just hate talking about trading guys away. I always get so sentimentally attached to the players, even when they suck.

there's a (non hockey related) poll question for ya
what’s the ratio of A’s to Giants fans here?
While I am an A’s fan, I call the Giants my NL team. I only root against them when they face the A’s.

A's fan.
I’ve been going to games at the Coliseum as long as I can remember. I used to hate the Giants although that’s softened since my brother’s a fan. So I guess if I had to pick an NL team I’d say Giants these days. I’m indifferent toward the rest of them, except the Dodgers. I just don’t like any SoCal team.

Formerly a Giants fan
But then the whole steroids thing came out and I gradually stopped watching all professional baseball. I still like the Giants (and J.T. Snow remains to be my favorite player ever), but its nowhere near the level of love I had for the sport a few years ago.
I do, however, like to watch the Little League World Series every year. Those kids are crazy good, and its so fun watching them play their hearts out.

I mean what 6 year doesn’t like a team that’s in the World Series?
But later I went to A’s games, started liking them. Read Moneyball. Found AN. Became big A’s fan.
(I don’t really post at AN though, I’m scared of their extreme sarcasm, but I do read it everyday and learn A LOT)

I'll go strictly from memory
His nickname is ‘The Villain’ for a reason. He was part of the Flames ’04 run and gave the Sharks HELL. One play in particular, he crashed into Nabokov, tweaking his knee. Sharks were bounced from the WCF in 6.
Not long after, ‘The Villain’ was acquired by the Sharks – and I swore up and down I would never support that decision. But eventually, his tenacious behavior and panache for funny interviews (plus being childhood BFF with Toskala) eventually won me over.
Plus, he was credited with 15 (!?) hits in a playoff game vs Oilers during the ’06 run – during which time he was playing while sick (had a fever if I recall right)

But Campbell was a positive in that he convinced DW that the Sharks needed an offensive defenseman, and he should break the bank to get one (or two). Enter Boyle and Blake, who have contributed to the team far beyond what I expected.

In case anyone missed it:
According to James Murphy (our buddy ol’ pal over at Stanley Cup of Chowder) and the rumors around TSN, the Bruins and Ducks have agreed on a deal that would send Chris Pronger and Travis Moen to the Bruins for Mark Stuart, Joe Colborne and 1st round pick. Also noted, another roster player could be added from Boston.
In other news, Billy G. and PHX defenseman Derek Morris will sit out until traded

Though a recent broadcast reports Boston has backed out because Anaheim's price was too high
And have since turned their attention to the St.Louis Blues.

That's good?
Pronger won’t make Boston better. But we did miss out on a chance to see Pronger out of the division if we left.
And may I suggest a “Fear the Fincentric Trade Talk Part 2” so this thread doesn’t become laggy.

Hard to believe
but looking at team stats, he just might be a nice fit for Dallas. The could use a RW right now with the ability to score. Personally, I’m a bit skeptical of his actual value though. I mean, he pretty much disappeared when he came to the Sharks.

That pretty much sums up my feelings on him too. He must bring something valuable to the table if contenders keep asking for him. As far as I can tell, he runs hot and cold, but has the ability to be great when everything is aligned right. That possibility alone must seem fairly attractive to teams looking for a little something extra before the playoffs.
Spector’s says he off to some place in the east. Will be interesting to see where he ends up.

That got me thinking about him in the playoffs
and I looked up this:
105 playoff games
28 goals
22 assists
50 points
-18 plus/minus
145 PIM
Not bad, but not spectacular. I’m with you, I don’t see what makes him seem so valuable.

At the moment
NYI Point Blank says the trade might be off…
7:38 pm – The Islanders just sent out a series of texts to the media saying:
1. There will be no news tonight
2. There is no timeline for any announcements
Which, when you cut right through it, means only one thing:
There is no trade.
by Section223 on Mar 1, 2009 4:57 PM PST up reply actions 0 recs
Spector’s mentioned that too, linking to Botta. Interesting. First they wouldn’t mention who it was because it could fall through, then it had fallen through, then that was apparently false, and now it looks like it really did fall apart.
Ah trade deadline fun.

OH
And he’s updated (maybe I should have read that first, eh?) saying there may well be a deal and (he speculates) it’s to Washington. They just can’t seem to close it.
Whatever, there’s a trade, or there isn’t. Eventually, we’ll all know! I’ll reserve judgement on it until we know for sure if he’s moving or not.

Nevermind. It’s been debunked (for now). I hate being fooled by hockey’s professional rumor mongers. On an aside, apparently there’s a destination for Billy G. that should be revealed shortly once the ink dries.

If Pronger goes to the B's
Does that mean Chara is available? How about Cheech, Luk, 3rd round pick, and a highlight reel of a healthy Sturm for Chara?

Yeah, saw that mentioned in TSN last week
Be alert, Sharks fans – Doug Wilson openly confessed to trying to acquire Pronger in the past.
Question – since he plays well while being booed, should we continue to boo if he’s one of us?
Fear The Fin: Keeping you from your obligations since 2008

On a more serious note
Could the Sharks even afford him? I’m afraid he’d cost too much, plus I’m dubious about how well he’d mesh. But for the moment it’s just a rumor.
Getting back to Mr. K’s question: if booing really helps him, why not? ;)

Captain Stompy would make next season's cap issues a lot more interesting.
We’d probably have to deal one of our top salary guys to keep him.

minor signing (I assume this one's legit)
Montreal Canadiens General Manager Bob Gainey announced today the signing of forward Andrew Conboy to a three-year contract (2009-10 to 2011-12)
This one is interesting because Conboy is crazy. He’s the younger brother of x-Sharks prospect Tim Conboy.

Not good for Sharks
If we face NJ in finals (sorry if I’m looking ahead). Havelid will fit in well with Devils schema (bore you to death until you make a mistake), and with Brodeur playing well, the Devils are trying to setup to tackle Boston or Washington for the conference.

Kings say Frolov will not be traded to Pens for Staal
Los Angeles Kings general manager Dean Lombardi denied rumors that he will send the team’s goal-scoring leader, Alexander Frolov, to the Pittsburgh Penguins for center Jordan Staal, according to the Los Angeles Times.
“All those rumors about him being traded are, at this stage, totally false,” Lombardi said. “The last month he’s picked it up and he’s playing like he cares.”
Lombardi also indicated veteran Sean O’Donnell will remain with the team. Lombardi said signing O’Donnell will be a ‘priority’ for the Kings.
