Gameday Wrap Up: Sharks Beat Kings 2-1
Staubitz is a moron for dropping the gloves with Ivanans. Jesus, look at this photo:

* Nabokov looked so relaxed tonight. I sincerely hope Boucher gets 3-4 starts down the stretch to keep him fresh and not risk tweaking what seems to be a slightly recurring injury. Consider the fact he played nearly every game last season, had a long summer playing with Team Russia, and has battled two extended periods of injury already this year.
* Luko looked pretty brutal once again. A handful of giveaways behind the net, getting beat to the dot on various Los Angeles rushes. Remind me again why he's paired with Semenov? I really don't see how that pairing is going to shut down scoring lines or generate anything offensively, and as good as Murray has been with Boyle, Luko looks lost out there. If Ehrhoff is healthy, Luko either plays with Boyle, Blake, or is a healthy scratch.
* Joe Thornton is slowly showing signs of life, and Gooch too. I thought the first line did a solid job of generating a cycle for most of the night, but at one point you've got to pull up your britches and bang the twine.
* Power play looked as good as it can be when you go 0 for 8. Lots of movement off the puck, traffic in front of the net; only problem is getting shots through on a consistent basis. I think Matt Greene had like seventeen blocked shots for the Kings. Oh, and Joe Pavs on the point works for me. He's got great lateral movement and creates a lot of space to open up seams in the defense.
* LA is making the playoffs next year and challenging for the Pacific division title in two. Book it.
* In other news, where the hell did Erik Ersberg come from? What a performance.
* Marcel Goc was a man possessed out there, and looks like the obvious answer to putting some bite in the third line. Probably the best player during the first half of the game. I’ve got a good feeling Moen and Cheech are going to start popping up on the boxscore soon. On that note, how sick is Moen? You can just see him getting more comfortable in the system. He drew two penalties, chipped in during the PK, brought some pain on the forecheck, and seems to have some decent hands. Color me ecstatic for the first time this month.
* This is probably the biggest concern I have- comfort with the system. We've mentioned this before (all the way back in December), but teams have been pressuring the puck carrier once he crosses the blueline like it's a religion. Clowe is one of the few players who adjust to this on a consistent basis. Instead of shooting from the top of the circle during the rush, he'll sit back, wait for the backcheckers to overpursue into the zone, and hit a trailer for a nice look from between the circles.
Even Brian Boitano thinks the shootout is ghey
Question O' De Night: Does Cheechoo's shootout game winner jumpstart him going forward, considering Marcel Goc is a beast?
Go Sharks.

God
I HATE shootouts!
But I’ll make an exception for this one

I'm with you Dave
but Drew called it, said Cheech just needed to wind up and shoot instead of being pretty
I also don’t like bonus points. Games shouldn’t be worth 2 or 3 points. They should be worth 2 or 3 points. Wait….

Well
It’s a win. So for that I’m happy.
There were lots of things to be positive about, but over all, I have the feeling we escaped with a win. We still have to get a lot better in a short time

Well, plank says
there was traffic in front of the net tonight, but every time I looked it seemed like we were on the side boards and Ersberg had a clear view of the damn puck
Just took a look at the replays (drunk, but whatevs), and we got some decent traffic in front of the net for the majority of the time. I’ll touch on it more in tomorrow’s gameday, because I’m lazy and need material.
Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated
Big Joe tonight
I watched him skate tonight, is it possible he has a minor injury that is not being talked about? He seems 3/4 stride off
Always interesting about those.
You start yelling at that player, “WHY DO YOU SUCK.” Than they come out and say they had a broken bone somewhere and you feel like poop.
That's an interesting thought
Joe doesn’t look 100 percent. Sometimes when I watch him I wonder if I’m just being hyper critical. But I do think he looks like there is something off…not sure what, but he’s just not the BIG Joe he was earlier in the season.
One thing to remember about that though, is that Joe draws the most attention from the opposition. No matter how good you are, if you continually get covered like a freaking blanket, your play will suffer.
I don’t know if that’s what’s happening here or what.

He might
Remember, he’s the guy that played with broken ribs through the playoffs with Boston. And a broken toe all year with the Sharks. He’s not going to sit out unless it becomes physically impossible for him to play.
But, yeah. He has seemed a bit off, in both skating and passing. I sort of wish that McLellan will bump him down to the third/fourth line or something if he is injured so he can somewhat rest it without breaking his iron man streak that he loves.
question o' de night
yeah i think that some sort of confidence in cheechoo must have been jump started once he got into the locker room let alone once he beat ersberg and took the win. i guess we’ll find out tomorrow in anaheim. go sharks
All the more interesting now that we have Moen (and Huskins)

Okay game tonight
The first period was absolutely amazing (except for the inability to get more than one goal) and the second and third periods declined, but weren’t horrible like some have been this past stretch. In fact, if you disregard that the Sharks couldn’t score more than once, they went 0 for 8 on the PP, allowed something like 7 breakaways, and they had 20+ giveaways, it was a pretty good game. Er, that doesn’t sound that good, but you get the idea. They skated well, put a lot of pressure on the Kings, and got chance after chance by putting the pucks on net. But once again, they decide to make a backup goalie look like a Vezina candidate. Which is a good sign, since that means that they’re returning to the ways of old – right?
Regarding the 2 on 0 – I’m not sure which fails more, the fact that the Sharks gave up a 2 on 0 or the fact that the Kings didn’t even get a shot away. If I were Puck Daddy, I’d put that entire play from both sides (save Nabby) in the dishonorable mention section. The fact that it developed is bad, yes, but the fact that the Kings didn’t even get a shot off on probably the best scoring chance ever is even worse.
I hate the shootout. I hate it with the intensity of a thousand burning stars that have somehow collided, collapsed, and has formed a black hole that sucks anything and everything in the universe. Its like a heart attack and ulcer all rolled up into one big mess. And having to go through it fourteen times? Ugh. Thank god I was behind and ran in here to check who won so I didn’t have to go through the heart attack/ulcer again after the initial three rounds.
The Sharks really helped Nabby prep for the shootout by giving up all those breakaways, though. So I guess one good thing came from those giveaways/defensive breakdowns, right?
Yay for a win. Feels good that we got one without blowing a three goal lead in the process.
Best players tonight...
Seto, 3rd line, 2nd line, Boyle, Murray, Nabby.
Sharks continue to suck at getting the puck out of their zone. To give credit to the Kings, their forwards forechecked like heck and were very aggressive. To put the blame on the Sharks, they’re not sticking passes and making several ill-advised passes. Only player who consistently had success in getting a breakout was Boyle.
2nd line once again ghosting as the 1st line. I agree with the majority. Big Joe looks several strides behind. Overall it didn’t look like he was really skating very well or very hard. I’m also getting really sick of his giveaways along the boards. Marleau had some jump, but Seto really propelled that line tonight. I’m sure his goal scoring slump will end soon if he maintains the hard work he showed tonight. If not for Ersberg’s best Rogie Vachon impersonation, I’m sure Seto would’ve had 2 goals.
Unfortunately the injuries have worn the 3rd and 4th line thin, but Goc looked great. Made some very aggressive moves to the net and laid out some big checks.
That 2-0 was just an embarrassment at both ends. Nabby played the situation well. Nabby was very, very solid in his first game back. I’d presume the sharks will start Boucher tomorrow. If they show the same effort as they did tonight, they should win.

From what I saw (second half of the third and on)
nothing to complain about.
Notes:
-Milan Michalek is FAST
-Patty looked like he was fired up
-Ersberg was studly
-I’m glad Nabokov is back, and looks to be in pretty good shape
-4 on 4 play seems to have improved
-Hopefully I’ll be able to catch more of tonight’s game.
See you guys then!
Standings reminder
The Sharks keep pace with Boston and Detroit – those two are at 99 points, and the Sharks are at 98. All three teams can hit or break 100 points tomorrow: even though 26 of 30 teams played tonight, there are 14 playing tomorrow. Boston plays Pittsburgh, and Detroit plays Columbus. Columbus is looking mighty scary – but not to the point where I would want Detroit to beat them.
Nabby playing back-to-backs? I originally thought Boosh would be in, but Lurker and Gray convinced me otherwise.
Coming this week – all Pacific Division, (almost) all the time. Minus Nashville on Thursday, and Colorado next Sunday, we have 3 PacDiv matchups in addition to tonight’s game.
Final thought – I love that 99% of the audience cheered for Sean O’Donnell, who played in his 1,000th NHL game tonight. The 1% that booed are officially assholes, and I don’t want to be associated with them.

who booed?
My section was pretty nice about it. Didn’t hear a boo, though not everyone applauded.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
There were scattered boos coming from the 204-206 area
Just a few – and it was probably tongue in cheek, but I still didn’t appreciate it. I’m kinda proud of our “classy fan” status around the league, and I don’t like anything to jeopardize it…. like that unfortunate incident with O Canada during the Semifinals in 2006.

That whole thing was ridiculous
That wasn’t what they made it out to be, that’s for sure. I didn’t even know it had happened until I heard all the fuss about it. They way the covered it you’d think all 17,496 folks booed.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
I remember that. Mainly because Ms. Kim (my freshman english teacher, btw) lectured the class about it the next day, saying how she was ashamed of Sharks fans for booing the anthem.
Ha - I remember Ms. Kim saying that
Keep in mind that she was an Edmonton native, too. I also remember some of the juniors in Ms. Taylor’s class, claiming they were the ones who started the booing. Paragons of maturity, those guys.

which game was that anyway?
I can’t recall if it was one of the two I was at or not. For the record I stand quietly for both anthems, unless we’re playing the Stars.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
Where's the fun in standing quietly?
I always sing along, horribly out of key, but it’s the thought that counts. Although I’m better with O Canada than the Star Spangled Banner.

I’m one of the guys that yells, “EVERYBODY!” when the refrain occurs at the end of O Canada – I love that anthem. It’s also easier to sing than our national anthem.

I do that too.
Yeah, it’s a lot easier, but I’m still way off key. Note: having me sing in Rock Band is a recipe for epic failure.

I do it because it's polite
I know the words to both, but I sing neither. It’s better for everyone within earshot that way. Much better.

Just a few more thoughts.
That 2 on none was really embarrassing. For both teams. Fail to to Sharks for letting it happen. And what, did Nabby’s angry glare scare the Kings into not taking a shot?
Officiating was pretty bad, and Don Koharski and Kerry Fraser weren’t even in the building. Blown and missed calls all over the place.
Can the Stealth please schedule their games around the Sharks schedule? I’m guessing the ice was pretty bad tonight cause guys on both teams kept falling.
Wasn’t exactly what I was hoping to see tonight, but two points is two points.

And what, did Nabby’s angry glare scare the Kings into not taking a shot?
That’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. He scared them off with a look, which cause the over skate and the half hearted attempt at a shot that followed. That’s like the jedi mind trick of saves.
resident cartoonist @couchtarts.blogspot.com
That's not the shot you're looking for.
You can overskate the goal line. Move along.
