The Sharks play a back to back today, and if you've hung around here long enough you're aware we don't do back to backs on the weekend. So this post is going to suck.

Oh, what's that? Ronnie Van Zant's in the house?

Gladly.

  • Should be interesting to see Moen back at the Pond. Does he get a lengthy round of applause? I don't know and honestly don't care.
  • Lo and behold Chris Pronger eluded a seemingly inevitable trade deadline deal, and will be suiting up tonight for the Quacks. Is it just me or is there not as much excitement to play Anaheim this go around? Granted it probably has a lot to do with the schedule and lack of a Pacific division race, but I wasn't counting down the days like I have in the past. This changes once I wake up of course, but it's still kind of peculiar. Feel free to backhand me like Chris Brown if you feel I've broken the "Revved Up For Rivals" code of fandom.
  • Some talk last night about the lack of traffic on the power play. Took a look at Tivo, and have to say that while we could have gotten more bodies in front of the net, it wasn't atrocious by any means. Clowe was camped out front, Joe did a semi-decent job of getting there etc. In reality, this comes down to our defensemen unable to get shots through right now. If that's not happening we're pretty much forced to spread their PK unit out with guys on the sideboards because launching rockets into skates and shins isn't going to amount to anything. Didn't help that Ersberg played out of his mind either.
  • As for Thornton, it was floated around last night that he may be playing through an injury. Thoughts? I didn't think he had that poor of a game through the first half of the tilt, but he has tended to go unnoticed in the third lately (doing so last night). Honestly, it just seems like a matter of time till he gets back in the groove. If he is playing injured (completely hypothetical, I have no idea if that is/isn't the case), I hope McLellan would have sat his ass down and scratched him for a game or two. Yeah he's a huge part of the team and the lines would begin to look thinner than Ryan Getzlaf's hairline*, but I'd much rather have a 100% Thornton and a 2 seed than a 75% Thornton (who would be regressing due to playing on it) and a 1 seed.
  • Maybe it's just blind optimism when compared to all the negatives, but there was probably three shifts in the game last night where the Sharks looked on their heels. Not the best team to measure up against of course, but the Kings have played us tough all season; we managed to control the vast majority of that game. If you look at it from that standpoint, I don't mind taking two points out of the shootout (even though the shootout sucks). Chicken Little has officially been booted from the Plank household until further notice.
  • Hey what's up bitches, it's Chicken Little back for one last shot. The first ten minutes along with the third period scare me a bit tonight. San Jose hasn't fared too well against desperate teams lately, and coupled with a back to back on the road we might get jumped early and lose steam late. It ain't gonna happen, but it might.

* It really never gets old.

Prediction: Sharks win 4-2. Goals by Clowe, Cheechoo, Thornton, and Blake.

Go Sharks.

Beware the Ides of March!

Although, I’m not sure who’s the Brutus and who’s the Antony in this match-up (as well as Cassius and Caesar), but just want to throw it out there.* Makes this site a bit more cultured, lol.

And speaking of obscure holidays, happy belated Pi Day! I completely forgot about it yesterday :P

* I’d much rather the Sharks be Antony, since he wins. The part of Caesar could go to either Huskins, who got injured while on the Ducks and then “betrayed” by being traded away, or Roenick, whose first injury was caused by a hit by Festerling in the last match-up these teams had.**

** I seriously want to see the Sharks go crazy on Festerling’s ass. Nobody gets away with hurting JR!

A little last minute,

but Stanley’s anyone? Mr. K and I were probably planning on meeting AppleSweetRose there around 3ish to embarrass ourselves do a little skating, then head upstairs to watch the game. Might be the last chance to meet here before she goes back to PA, and we haven’t succeeded in doing that yet. TCY, Swisher, Gray, or anyone else want to go?

Hey Fin-Folk.

I’m rooting for an easy win for your team today…and, if possible, is it too much to ask for them to completely crush the morale and post-season aspirations of the Sharks.

Sincerely, a Blues fan desperately clinging to the notion of a return to the playoffs.

P.S. Five dollars to the first one who can get to the Ducks’ venue and walk away with half of George Parros’ mustache.

Fear The Fin: Where The Second Round Is Overrated

by Mr. Plank on Mar 15, 2009 5:58 PM PDT up reply actions

yeah.

not a lot of hustle behind the play. that is the problem i have seen lately. lots of glazed over, stick waving puck watchers. one guy skates hard with the puck, dumps, and from coasting half speed as if caught off guard by the sudden dump in, 2 wingers chase the puck in, lose a half-ass battle along the boards, and skate back as the other team makes 2 easy passes out of the zone and skates up with all the easy space given by the suddenly timid defense. once in the d zone, they setle into a box and swing their sticks trying to deflect a pass, get beat to loose pucks in the corner and rebounds, and spend way too long watching the other team play with the puck.
an unmotivated somehow unskilled (?) looking team. coach Mc looked like a genius at the beginning of the season. now, he looks like…

basically, the sharks play has about as much enthusiasm as Joe Thornton’s acting.

But this is the second multi-penalty game for him in less than a week… though I’m struggling to remember the other one.

i think we just saw a flash of where he could flourish

when his linemates are getting themeselvers into good position, and he has support off the puck, he is a difference maker. when he plays with guys like stupitz or shelley, god-bless-em, who cant transition or threaten with off-puck movement, he kinda disappears.

it was sugested by baker a few weeks ago

that the worcester dudes need to play balls out, rather than just get their minutes in. gotta love the heart.
from the beginning, McGinn was the only guy i saw who could skate with regular shift nhl’rs, he has a stride like marleau and always seems to be thinking in a north/south direction, kinda like milan or t mitchell. i think he could be a great addition to the 3rd line next season or on a wing with joe and gooch.

Yeah, he looked good with Patty and Gooch a couple games ago too. If McLellan decides to break up the God line during the playoffs he might see some time. I’m hoping he sticks on the roster at least, even if he is a healthy scratch for half the games or whatever.

Not real sure

Sometimes the passing looks good with the movement to the net…but JEEZ, who was here last night, Ringling Bros? The ice looks terrible.
